Dark Matter (DM) annihilation in our Galaxy may produce a linearly polarized synchrotron signal. We use, for the first time, synchrotron polarization to constrain the DM annihilation cross section by comparing theoretical predictions with the latest polarization maps obtained by the Planck satellite collaboration. We find that synchrotron polarization is typically more constraining than synchrotron intensity by about one order of magnitude, independently of uncertainties in the modeling of electron and positron propagation, or of the Galactic magnetic field. Our bounds compete with Cosmic Microwave Background limits in the case of leptophilic DM.

We investigate the synchrotron emission (both intensity and morphology) associated with generic dark matter particles and make predictions for the PLANCK experiment using the FERMI data and a model for the astrophysical sources. Our results indicate that the morphology of the dark matter plus astrophysical source synchrotron emission is frequency-dependent. We show that a thorough comparison between LFI and HFI data can potentially provide a new tool for constraining the dark matter particle mass.
Synchrotron X-ray emission components were recently detected in many young supernova remnants (SNRs). There is even an emerging class - SN1006, RXJ1713.72-3946, Vela Jr, and others - that is dominated by non-thermal emission in X-rays, also probably of synchrotron origin. Such emission results from electrons/positrons accelerated well above TeV energies in the spectral cut-off regime. In the case of diffusive shock acceleration, which is the most promising acceleration mechanism in SNRs, very strong magnetic fluctuations with amplitudes well above the mean magnetic field must be present.
Synchrotron emission and absorption determine the observational appearance of many astronomical systems. In this paper, we describe a numerical scheme for calculating synchrotron emissivities and absorptivities in all four Stokes parameters for arbitrary gyrotropic electron distribution functions, building on earlier work by Leung, Gammie, and Noble. We use this technique to evaluate the emissivities and the absorptivities for a thermal (Maxwell-Jüttner), isotropic power-law, and isotropic kappa distribution function. The latter contains a power-law tail at high particle energies that smoothly…
During our optical monitoring of UV Ceti, iconic late-type flaring star, with high temporal resolution using the Russian 6-m telescope in 2008 we detected a giant flare with the amplitude of about 3 magnitudes in $U$-band. Near flare maximum more than a dozen of spike bursts have been discovered with triangular shapes and durations from 0.6 to 1.2 s and maximal luminosities in the range $(1.5-8)\times10^{27}$ erg~s$^{-1}$. For the half of these events the linear polarization exceeds 35% with significance better than $5σ$. We argue that these events are synchrotron emission of electron streams …
Polarization is a powerful diagnostic tool to constrain the site of the high-energy pulsed emission and particle acceleration in gamma-ray pulsars. Recent particle-in-cell simulations of pulsar magnetosphere suggest that high-energy emission results from particles accelerated in the equatorial current sheet emitting synchrotron radiation. In this study, we re-examine the simulation data to compute the phase-resolved polarization properties. We find that the emission is mildly polarized and that there is an anticorrelation between the flux and the degree of linear polarization (on-pulse: ~15%, …
We present near-infrared polarimetric observations of the black hole X-ray binaries Swift J1357.2-0933 and A0620-00. In both sources, recent studies have demonstrated the presence of variable infrared synchrotron emission in quiescence, most likely from weak compact jets. For Swift J1357.2-0933 we find that the synchrotron emission is polarized at a level of 8.0 +- 2.5 per cent (a 3.2 sigma detection of intrinsic polarization). The mean magnitude and rms variability of the flux (fractional rms of 19-24 per cent in K_s-band) agree with previous observations. These properties imply a continuousl…
Gamma rays and microwave observations of the Galactic Center and surrounding areas indicate the presence of anomalous emission, whose origin remains ambiguous. The possibility of dark matter (DM) annihilation explaining both signals through prompt emission at gamma-rays and secondary emission at microwave frequencies from interactions of high-energy electrons produced in annihilation with the Galactic magnetic fields has attracted much interest in recent years. We investigate the DM interpretation of the Galactic Center gamma-ray excess by searching for the associated synchrotron in the WMAP-P…
We present relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (RMHD) simulations of stationary overpressured magnetized relativistic jets which are characterized by their dominant type of energy, namely internal, kinetic, or magnetic. Each model is threaded by a helical magnetic field with a pitch angle of $45^\circ$ and features a series of recollimation shocks produced by the initial pressure mismatch, whose strength and number varies as a function of the dominant type of energy. We perform a study of the polarization signatures from these models by integrating the radiative transfer equations for synchrotron…
The rising amount of polarized observations of relativistic sources requires the correct theory for proper model fitting. The equations for general relativistic (GR) polarized radiative transfer are derived starting from the Boltzmann equation and basic ideas of general relativity. The derivation is aimed at providing a practical guide to reproducing the synchrotron part of radio & sub-mm emission from low luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGNs), in particular Sgr A*, and jets. The recipe for fast exact calculation of cyclo-synchrotron emissivities, absorptivities, Faraday rotation and conv…
We calculate the polarization of synchrotron radiation produced at the relativistic reconfinement shocks, taking into account globally ordered magnetic field components, in particular toroidal and helical fields. In these shocks, toroidal fields produce high parallel polarization (electric vectors parallel to the projected jet axis), while chaotic fields generate moderate perpendicular polarization. Helical fields result in a non-axisymmetric distribution of the total and polarized brightness. For a diverging downstream velocity field, the Stokes parameter U does not vanish and the average pol…
$GRB~160802A$ is one of the brightest gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) observed with $Fermi$ Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) in the energy range of $10~-~1000$ keV, while at the same time it is surprisingly faint at energies $\gtrsim2$ MeV. An observation with $AstroSat$/CZT Imager (CZTI) also provides the polarisation which helps in constraining different prompt emission models using the novel joint spectra-polarimetric data. We analyze the $Fermi$/GBM data, and find two main bursting episodes that are clearly separated in time, one particularly faint in higher energies and having certain differences in…
Horava-Lifshitz gravity models contain higher order operators suppressed by a characteristic scale, which is required to be parametrically smaller than the Planck scale. We show that recomputed synchrotron radiation constraints from the Crab nebula suffice to exclude the possibility that this scale is of the same order of magnitude as the Lorentz breaking scale in the matter sector. This highlights the need for a mechanism that suppresses the percolation of Lorentz violation in the matter sector and is effective for higher order operators as well.
We report a polarimetric constraint on the hard X-ray synchrotron jet emission from the Cygnus X-1 black-hole binary system. The observational data were obtained using the PoGO+ hard X-ray polarimeter in July 2016, when Cygnus X-1 was in the hard state. We have previously reported that emission from an extended corona with a low polarization fraction is dominating, and that the polarization angle is perpendicular to the disk surface. In the soft gamma-ray regime, a highly-polarized synchrotron jet is reported with INTEGRAL observations. To constrain the polarization fraction and flux of such a…
Relativistic thermal electrons moving in a large-scale magnetic field can produce synchrotron radiation. Linear synchrotron polarization can also be produced by the relativistic thermal electrons. In this paper, we utilize a hybrid thermal-nonthermal electron energy distribution to calculate circular synchrotron polarization. We further compute the radiative transfer of the synchrotron polarization in the optical and radio bands when we consider the contribution of the thermal electrons. We attempt to apply the polarization results to some astrophysical objects, such as kilonova like AT 2017gf…
In this paper, the integrated continuum radio spectrum of supernova remnant (SNR) W44 was analyzed up to 70 GHz, testing the different emission models that can be responsible for its particular shape. The observations by the Planck space telescope made possible to analyze the high frequency part of radio emission from SNRs. Although the quality of radio continuum spectrum (a high scatter of data points at same frequencies) prevents us to make definite conclusions, the possibility of spinning dust emission detection towards this remnant is emphasized. In addition, a concave-down feature, due to…
Pulsar wind nebulae are formed when outflows of relativistic electrons and positrons hit the surrounding supernova remnant or interstellar medium at a shock front. The Vela pulsar wind nebula is powered by a young pulsar (B0833-45, age 11 kyr) and located inside an extended structure called Vela X, itself inside the supernova remnant. Previous X-ray observations revealed two prominent arcs, bisected by a jet and counter jet. Radio maps have shown high linear polarization of 60 per cent in the outer regions of the nebula. Here we report X-ray observation of the inner part of the nebula, where p…
The Large Area Telescope on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope detected a strong gamma-ray flare on 2011 May 15 from a source identified as 4C 49.22, a flat spectrum radio quasar also known as S4 1150+49. This blazar, characterised by a prominent radio-optical-X-ray jet, was in a low gamma-ray activity state during the first years of Fermi observations. Simultaneous observations during the quiescent, outburst and post-flare gamma-ray states were obtained by Swift, Planck and optical-IR-radio telescopes (INAOE, Catalina CSS, VLBA, Metsahovi). The flare is observed from microwave to X-ray…
A relativistic electron-positron beam propagating through a magnetized electron-ion plasma is shown to generate both circularly and linearly polarized synchrotron radiation. The degrees of circular and linear polarizations depend both on the density ratio of pair beam to background plasma and initial magnetization, and a maximum degree of circular polarization $\langle P_\textrm{circ}\rangle \approx 18\%$ is found to occur for a tenuous pair beam. We demonstrate that the generation of circularly polarized radiation is intrinsically linked to asymmetric energy dissipation of the pair beam durin…
Polarization measurements of the microquasar Cygnus X-1 exist at gamma-ray, X-ray, UV, optical and radio frequencies. The gamma-ray emission has been shown to be highly linearly polarized. Here, we present new infrared polarimetric data of Cygnus X-1 taken with the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias and the 4.2-m William Herschel Telescope. We show that the broadband, radio to gamma-ray flux spectrum and polarization spectrum in the hard state are largely consistent with a simple phenomenological model of a strongly polarized synchrotron jet, an unpolarized Comptonized corona and a moderately pol…
Cosmic-ray (CR) leptons produce radio synchrotron radiation by gyrating in interstellar magnetic fields (B-field). Details of B-fields, CR electron distributions and propagation are still uncertain. We present developments in our modelling of Galactic radio emission with the GALPROP code. It now includes calculations of radio polarization, absorption, and free-free emission. Total and polarized synchrotron emission are investigated in the context of physical model of CR propagation. Predictions are compared with radio data from 22 MHz to 2.3 GHz, and Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe data a…
The jets emanating from the centers of active galactic nuclei (AGN) are among the most energetic objects in the universe. Investigating how the morphology of the jet's synchrotron emission depends on the magnetic nature of the jet's relativistic plasma is fundamental to the comparison between numerical simulations and the observed polarization of relativistic jets. Through the use of 3D relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (RMHD) jet simulations (computed using the PLUTO code) we study how the jet's synchrotron emission depends upon the morphology of the jet's magnetic field structure. Through the…
Strong magnetic fields, synchrotron emission, and Compton scattering are omnipresent in compact celestial X-ray sources. Emissions in the X-ray energy band are consequently expected to be linearly polarized. X-ray polarimetry provides a unique diagnostic to study the location and fundamental mechanisms behind emission processes. The polarization of emissions from a bright celestial X-ray source, the Crab, is reported here for the first time in the hard X-ray band (~20-160 keV). The Crab is a complex system consisting of a central pulsar, a diffuse pulsar wind nebula, as well as structures in t…
Synchrotron radiation is commonly observed in connection with shocks of different velocities, ranging from relativistic shocks associated with active galactic nuclei, gamma-ray bursts or microquasars to weakly- or non-relativistic flows as those observed in supernova remnants. Recent observations of synchrotron emission in protostellar jets are important not only because they extend the range over which the acceleration process works, but also because they allow to determine the jet and/or interstellar magnetic field structure, thus giving insights on the jet ejection and collimation mechanism…
