In this note, we discuss the derived functors of infinite products and homotopy limits. $QC(X)$, the category of quasi-coherent sheaves on a Deligne-Mumford stack $X$, usually has the property that the derived functors of product vanish after a finite stage. We use this fact to study the convergence of certain homotopy limits and apply it compare the derived category of $QC(X)$ with certain other closely related triangulated categories.
Given an appropriate diagram of left Quillen functors between model categories, one can define a notion of homotopy fiber product, but one might ask if it is really the correct one. Here, we show that this homotopy pullback is well-behaved with respect to translating it into the setting of more general homotopy theories, given by complete Segal spaces, where we have well-defined homotopy pullbacks.
We construct a smash product operation on secondary homotopy groups yielding the structure of a lax symmetric monoidal functor. Applications on cup-one products, Toda brackets and Whitehead products are considered. In particular we prove a formula for the crossed effect of the cup-one product operation on unstable homotopy groups of spheres which was claimed by Barratt-Jones-Mahowald.
Generalizing a definition of homotopy fiber products of model categories, we give a definition of the homotopy limit of a diagram of left Quillen functors between model categories. As has been previously shown for homotopy fiber products, we prove that such a homotopy limit does in fact correspond to the usual homotopy limit, when we work in a more general model for homotopy theories in which they can be regarded as objects of a model category.
In order to solve two problems in deformation theory, we establish natural structures of homotopy Lie algebras and of homotopy associative algebras on tensor products of algebras of different types and on mapping spaces between coalgebras and algebras. When considering tensor products, such algebraic structures extend the Lie algebra or associative algebra structures that can be obtained by means of the Manin products of operads. These new homotopy algebra structures are proven by to compatible with the concepts of homotopy theory: $\infty$-morphisms and the Homotopy Transfer Theorem. We give …
We call product generator of an additive category a fixed object satisfying the property that every other object is a direct factor of a product of copies of it. In this paper we start with an additive category with products and images, e.g. a module category, and we are concerned with the homotopy category of complexes with entries in that additive category. We prove that Brown representability theorem is valid for the dual of the homotopy category if and only if the initial additive category has a product generator.
We prove and explain several classical formulae for homotopy (co)limits in general (combinatorial) model categories which are not necessarily simplicially enriched. Importantly, we prove versions of the Bousfield-Kan formula and the fat totalization formula in this complete generality. We finish with a proof that homotopy-final functors preserve homotopy limits, again in complete generality.
We show how to induce products in sheaf cohomology for a wide variety of coefficients: sheaves of dg commutative and Lie algebras, symmetric Omega-spectra, filtered dg algebras, operads and operad algebras.
We develop a stable analogue to the theory of cosimplicial frames in model cagegories; this is used to enrich all homotopy categories of stable model categories over the usual stable homotopy category and to give a different description of the smash product of spectra which is compared with the known descriptions; in particular, the original smash product of Boardman is identified with the newer smash products coming from a symmetric monoidal model of the stable homotopy category.
The notion of a natural model of type theory is defined in terms of that of a representable natural transfomation of presheaves. It is shown that such models agree exactly with the concept of a category with families in the sense of Dybjer, which can be regarded as an algebraic formulation of type theory. We determine conditions for such models to satisfy the inference rules for dependent sums, dependent products, and intensional identity types, as used in homotopy type theory. It is then shown that a category admits such a model if it has a class of maps that behave like the abstract fibratio…
For a Hopf DG-algebra corresponding to a derived algebraic group, we compute the homotopy limit of the associated cosimplicial system of DG-algebras given by the classifying space construction. The homotopy limit is taken in the model category of DG-categories. The objects of the resulting DG-category are Maurer-Cartan elements of $\operatorname{Cobar}(A)$, or 1-dimensional $A_\infty$-comodules over $A$. These can be viewed as characters up to homotopy of the corresponding derived group. Their tensor product is interpreted in terms of Kadeishvili's multibraces. We also study the coderived cate…
Homotopy limits and colimits are homotopical replacements for the usual limits and colimits of category theory, which can be approached either using classical explicit constructions or the modern abstract machinery of derived functors. Our first goal in this paper is expository: we explain both approaches and a proof of their equivalence. Our second goal is to generalize this result to enriched categories and homotopy weighted limits, showing that the classical explicit constructions still give the right answer in the abstract sense. This result partially bridges the gap between classical homo…
In this paper, we apply an explicit construction of a simplicial powering in dg-categories, due to Holstein (2016) and Arkhipov and Poliakova (2018), as well as our own results on homotopy ends (Arkhipov and Ørsted 2018), to obtain an explicit model for the homotopy limit of a cosimplicial system of dg-categories. We apply this to obtain a model for homotopy descent in terms of $\mathrm{A}_{\infty}$-comodules, proving a conjecture by Block, Holstein, and Wei (2017) in the process.
We develop the homotopy theory of semisimplicial sets constructively and without reference to point-set topology to obtain a constructive model for $ω$-groupoids. Most of the development is folklore, but for a few results the author is unaware of previously known constructive proofs. These include the statements that the unit of the free simplicial set adjunction is valued in weak equivalences and that the geometric product and cartesian product of fibrant semisimplicial sets are weakly equivalent. We then extend the development to marked semisimplicial sets in order to obtain a constructive m…
The notion of reparametrization category is incorrectly axiomatized and it must be adjusted. It is proved that for a general reparametrization category $\mathcal{P}$, the tensor product of $\mathcal{P}$-spaces yields a biclosed semimonoidal structure. It is also described some kind of objectwise braiding for $\mathcal{G}$-spaces.
Working in homotopy type theory, we provide a systematic study of homotopy limits of diagrams over graphs, formalized in the Coq proof assistant. We discuss some of the challenges posed by this approach to formalizing homotopy-theoretic material. We also compare our constructions with the more classical approach to homotopy limits via fibration categories.
Given two small dg categories $C,D$, defined over a field, we introduce their (non-symmetric) twisted tensor product $C\overset{\sim}{\otimes} D$. We show that $-\overset{\sim}{\otimes} D$ is left adjoint to the functor $Coh(D,-)$, where $Coh(D,E)$ is the dg category of dg functors $D\to E$ and their coherent natural transformations. This adjunction holds in the category of small dg categories (not in the homotopy category of dg categories $\mathrm{Hot}$). We show that for $C,D$ cofibrant, the adjunction descends to the corresponding adjunction in the homotopy category. Then comparison with a …
We show that a derivator is stable if and only if homotopy finite limits and homotopy finite colimits commute, if and only if homotopy finite limit functors have right adjoints, and if and only if homotopy finite colimit functors have left adjoints. These characterizations generalize to an abstract notion of "stability relative to a class of functors", which includes in particular pointedness, semiadditivity, and ordinary stability. To prove them, we develop the theory of derivators enriched over monoidal left derivators and weighted homotopy limits and colimits therein.
Let $I$,$J$ be small categories and $C:I\times J@>>>\CAT$ a functor to the category of small categories. We show that if $I$ has a final object then the canonical map $\operatorname{hocolim}_J\operatorname{holim}_IC@>>>\operatorname{holim}_I \operatorname{hocolim}_JC$ is a strong homotopy equivalence.
Generalising Segal's approach to 1-fold loop spaces, the homotopy theory of $n$-fold loop spaces is shown to be equivalent to the homotopy theory of reduced $Θ_n$-spaces, where $Θ_n$ is an iterated wreath product of the simplex category $Δ$. A sequence of functors from $Θ_n$ to $Γ$ allows for an alternative description of the Segal-spectrum associated to a $Γ$-space. In particular, each Eilenberg-MacLane space $K(π,n)$ has a canonical reduced $Θ_n$-set model.
The purpose of this text is the study of the class of homotopy types which are modelized by strict \infty-groupoids. We show that the homotopy category of simply connected \infty-groupoids is equivalent to the derived category in homological degree greater or equal to 2 of abelian groups. We deduce that the simply connected homotopy types modelized by strict \infty-groupoids are precisely the products of Eilenberg-Mac Lane spaces. We also briefly study 3-categories with weak inverses. We finish by two questions about the problem suggested by the title of this text.
