We study the quantum dynamics of a system consisting of a magnetic molecule placed on a microcantilever. The amplitude and frequencies of the coupled magneto-mechanical oscillations are computed. Parameter-free theory shows that the existing experimental techniques permit observation of the driven coupled oscillations of the spin and the cantilever, as well as of the splitting of the mechanical modes of the cantilever caused by spin tunneling.
Parametrically tuning the oscillation dynamics of coupled micro/nano-mechanical resonators through a mechanical pump scheme has recently attracted great attentions from fundamental physics to various applications. However, the special design of the coupled resonators and low dissipation operation conditions significantly restrict the wide application of this tuning technique. In this study, we will show that, under ambient conditions, mechanical pump can parametrically control the oscillation dynamics in a single commercial microcantilever resonator. A strong phonon-cavity coupling with cooper…
A unified thermodynamic framework for characterization of functional materials is developed. This framework encompasses linear reversible and irreversible processes with thermal, electrical, magnetic, and/or mechanical effects coupled. The comprehensive framework combines the principles of classical equilibrium and non-equilibrium thermodynamics with electrodynamics of continua in the infinitesimal strain regime. In the first part of this paper, linear Thermo-Electro-Magneto-Mechanical (TEMM) quasistatic processes are characterized. Thermodynamic stability conditions are further imposed on the…
Mechanical metamaterials are architected manmade materials that allow for unique behaviors not observed in nature, making them promising candidates for a wide range of applications. Existing metamaterials lack tunability as their properties can only be changed to a limited extent after the fabrication. In this paper, we present a new magneto-mechanical metamaterial that allows great tunability through a novel concept of deformation mode branching. The architecture of this new metamaterial employs an asymmetric joint design using hard-magnetic soft active materials that permits two distinct act…
La(Fe,Mn,Si)13 alloys are a promising material family for magnetic refrigeration. Challenges associated with their structural integrity during device assembly and operation requires deep understanding of the mechanical properties. Here we developed a workflow to quantitatively study the fracture properties of La(Fe,Mn,Si)13 plates used in magnetic cooling devices. We employed microstructural characterisation, optical examination of defects, and four-point bending tests of samples with known defect sizes to evaluate their mechanical performance. We established the residual strength curve which …
Surface acoustic waves (SAWs) traveling on the surface of a piezoelectric crystal can, through the magnetoelastic interaction, excite traveling spin-wave resonance in a magnetic film deposited on the substrate. This spin-wave resonance in the magnetic film creates a time dynamic surface stress of magnetoelastic origin that acts back on the surface of the piezoelectric and modifies the SAW propagation. Unlike previous analyses that treat the excitation as a magnon-phonon polariton, here the magnetoelastic film is treated as a perturbation modifying boundary conditions on the SAW. We use acousti…
In this Letter, we introduce a paradigm to realize magneto-mechanical metastructures inspired by multi-layer 2D materials, such as graphene bilayers. The metastructures are intended to capture two aspects of their nanoscale counterparts. One is the multi-layer geometry, which is implemented by stacking hexagonal lattice sheets. The other is the landscape of weak inter-layer forces, which is mimicked by the interactions between pairs of magnets located at corresponding lattice sites on adjacent layers. We illustrate the potential of this paradigm through a three-layer prototype. The two rigid o…
A mechanical equivalent system is introduced to mimic the behavior of multilayer structures with diffusive spin transport. The analogy allows one to use existing mechanical intuition to predict the influence of various parameters on spin torques and spin-dependent magnetoresistance. In particular, it provides an understanding of the sign-changing behavior of spin torque in asymmetric F/N/F spin valves. It further helps to uncover the physical reason behind the singular behavior of spin magnetoresistance in devices with ultra-thin N-layers.
Cr2Ge2Te6 is a van der Waals ferromagnet with a Curie temperature at 66 K. Here we report a swift change in the magnetic ground state upon application of small DC electric current, a giant yet anisotropic magnetoelectric effect, and a sharp, lattice-driven quantum switching manifested in the I-V characteristic of the bulk single-crystal Cr2Ge2Te6. At the heart of these observed phenomena is a newly uncovered, strongly anisotropic magnetoelastic coupling that enables strongly anisotropic responses of the lattice to application of electric current and/or magnetic field, thus the exotic phenomena…
Nano-structures with giant magnetocrystalline anisotropy energies (MAE) are desired in designing miniaturized magnetic storage and quantum computing devices. Through ab initio and model calculations, we propose that special p-element dimers and single-adatom on symmetry-matched substrates possess giant atomic MAE of 72-200 meV with room temperature structural stability. The huge MAE originates from degenerate orbitals around Fermi level. More importantly, we developed a simplified quantum mechanical model to understand the principle on how to obtain giant MAE for supported magnetic structures.…
A magnetic skyrmion is a spin whirl with topological protection and high mobility to electric current. Intrinsic magnetoelastic coupling in chiral magnets permits manipulation of magnetic skyrmions and their lattice using mechanical loads, which is essential for developing future spintronics devices. It is found in experiments that the stability and deformation of skyrmions are sensitive to stresses, while the appearance of magnetic skyrmions in turn has a significant effect on the mechanical properties of the underlying material. However, a theory which explains these related phenomena within…
Magnetoelastic measurements in the piezomagnetic antiferromagnet UO$_{2}$ were performed via the fiber Bragg grating method in magnetic fields up to $150\,\mathrm{T}$ generated by a single-turn coil setup. We show that in short timescales, order of a few micro seconds, pulsed-magnetic fields excite mechanical resonances at temperatures ranging from $10\,\mathrm{K}$ to $300\,\mathrm{K}$, in the paramagnetic as well as within the robust antiferromagnetic state of the material. These resonances, which are barely attenuated within the 100 ms observations, are attributed to the strong magnetoelasti…
Angular momentum conservation has served as a guiding principle in the interplay between spin dynamics and mechanical rotations. However, in an antiferromagnet with vanishing magnetization, new fundamental rules are required to properly describe spin-mechanical phenomena. Here we show that the Néel order dynamics affects the mechanical motion of a rigid body by modifying its inertia tensor in the presence of strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy. This effect depends on temperature when magnon excitations are considered. Such a spin-mechanical inertia can produce measurable consequences at small…
The mechanical properties of magnetic materials are instrumental for the development of the magnetoelastic theory and the optimization of strain-modulated magnetic devices. In particular, two-dimensional (2D) magnets hold promise to enlarge these concepts into the realm of low-dimensional physics and ultrathin devices. However, no experimental study on the intrinsic mechanical properties of the archetypal 2D magnet family of the chromium trihalides has thus far been performed. Here, we report the room temperature layer-dependent mechanical properties of atomically thin CrI3 and CrCl3, finding …
We observe magnetic effects in ultra-high quality factor crystalline quartz Bulk Acoustic Wave resonators at milli-Kelvin temperature. The study reveals existence of hysteresis loops, jumps and memory effects of acoustical resonance frequencies. These loops arise as a response to the external magnetic field and span over few Hertz range for modes with linewidths of about $25$mHz, which constitute a frequency shift of order 60 linewidths. The effects are broadband but get stronger towards higher frequencies where both nonlinear effects and losses are limited by two level systems. This suggests …
Two-dimensional (2D) layered materials possess outstanding mechanical, electronic and optical properties, making them ideal materials for nanoelectromechanical applications. The recent discovery of 2D magnetic materials has promised a new class of magnetically active nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS). Here we demonstrate resonators made of 2D CrI3, whose mechanical resonances depend on the magnetic state of the material. We quantify the underlining effects of exchange and anisotropy magnetostriction by measuring the field dependence of the resonance frequency under a magnetic field parallel…
Soft elastic composite materials containing particulate rigid inclusions in a soft elastic matrix are candidates for developing soft actuators or tunable damping devices. The possibility to reversibly drive the rigid inclusions within such a composite together to a close-to-touching state by an external stimulus would offer important benefits. Then, a significant tuning of the mechanical properties could be achieved due to the resulting mechanical hardening. For a long time, it has been argued whether a virtual touching of the embedded magnetic particles with subsequent detachment can actually…
In this paper we study the switching properties of the dynamics of magnetic moments, that interact with an elastic medium. To do so we construct a Hamiltonian framework, that can take into account the dynamics in phase space of the variables that describe the magnetic moments in a consistent way. It is convenient to describe the magnetic moments as bilinears of anticommuting variables that are their own conjugates. However, we show how it is possible to avoid having to deal directly with the anticommuting variables themselves, only using them to deduce non-trivial constraints on the magnetoela…
