The statistics of high speed satellite galaxies, as reported in the recent literature, can be a powerful diagnosis of the depth of the potential well of the host halo, and hence discriminate between competing gravitational theories. Naively one expects that high speed satellites are more common in Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) than in cold dark matter (CDM) since an isolated MONDian system has an infinite potential well, while CDM halos have finite potential wells. In this \textit{Letter} we report on an initial test of this hypothesis in the context of the first generation of cosmological simulations utilising a rigorous MONDian Poisson solver. We find that such high speed encounters are approximately a factor of four more common in MOND than in the concordance $Λ$CDM model of cosmic structure formation.
We study the distribution of intragroup dark matter in small groups of dark matter halos of galaxy-like size in a LCDM cosmology. These groups are identified using a physical criterion and may be an appropriate representation of small galaxy groups. We quantify the amount of intragroup dark matter and characterize its distribution. We find that compact associations of halos, as well as those intermediate and loose groups, have rather flat intragroup dark matter profiles with logarithmic slopes of gamma ~0 and ~-0.2$, respectively. Hence, the intragroup dark matter of these halo systems does no…
To quantify how rare the bullet-cluster-like high-velocity merging systems are in the standard LCDM cosmology, we use a large-volume 27 (Gpc/h)^3 MICE simulation to calculate the distribution of infall velocities of subclusters around massive main clusters. The infall-velocity distribution is given at (1-3)R_{200} of the main cluster (where R_{200} is similar to the virial radius), and thus it gives the distribution of realistic initial velocities of subclusters just before collision. These velocities can be compared with the initial velocities used by the non-cosmological hydrodynamical simul…
We investigate the spatial distribution of galactic satellites in high resolution simulations of structure formation in the LCDM model: the Aquarius dark matter simulations of individual halos and the Millennium II simulation of a large cosmological volume. To relate the simulations to observations of the Milky Way we use two alternative models to populate dark halos with "visible" galaxies: a semi-analytic model of galaxy formation and an abundance matching technique. We find that the radial density profile of massive satellites roughly follows that of the dark matter halo (unlike the distrib…
A new accelerating cosmology driven only by baryons plus cold dark matter (CDM) is proposed in the framework of general relativity. In this model the present accelerating stage of the Universe is powered by the negative pressure describing the gravitationally-induced particle production of cold dark matter particles. This kind of scenario has only one free parameter and the differential equation governing the evolution of the scale factor is exactly the same of the $Λ$CDM model. For a spatially flat Universe, as predicted by inflation ($Ω_{dm}+Ω_{baryon}=1$), it is found that the effectively o…
Cosmological models that invoke warm or cold dark matter can not explain observed regularities in the properties of dwarf galaxies, their highly anisotropic spatial distributions, nor the correlation between observed mass discrepancies and acceleration. These problems with the standard model of cosmology have deep implications, in particular in combination with the observation that the data are excellently described by Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND). MOND is a classical dynamics theory which explains the mass discrepancies in galactic systems, and in the universe at large, without invoking…
We study the concentration of dark matter halos and its evolution in N-body simulations of the standard LCDM cosmology. The results presented in this paper are based on 4 large N-body simulations with about 10 billion particles each: the Millennium-I and II, Bolshoi, and MultiDark simulations. The MultiDark (or BigBolshoi) simulation is introduced in this paper. This suite of simulations with high mass resolution over a large volume allows us to compute with unprecedented accuracy the concentration over a large range of scales (about six orders of magnitude in mass), which constitutes the stat…
We derive the exact analytical solution of the linear structure growth rate in LCDM cosmology with flat or curved geometry, under the Newtonian gauge. Unlike the well known solution under the Newtonian limit (Heath 1977), our solution takes all general relativistic corrections into account and is hence valid at both the sub- and super-horizon scales. With this exact solution, we evaluate cosmological impacts induced by these relativistic corrections. (1) General relativistic corrections alter the density growth from z=100 to z=0 by 10% at k=0.01h/Mpc and the impact becomes stronger toward larg…
We show how higher derivatives of the expansion factor can be developed into a null diagnostic for concordance cosmology (LCDM). It is well known that the Statefinder -- the third derivative of the expansion factor written in dimensionless form, a^{(3)}/aH^3, equals unity for LCDM. We generalize this result to higher derivatives of the expansion factor and demonstrate that the hierarchy, a^{(n)}/aH^n, can be converted to a form that stays pegged at unity in concordance cosmology. This remarkable property of the Statefinder hierarchy enables it to be used as an extended null diagnostic for the …
The velocity function derived from large scale surveys can be compared with the predictions of LCDM cosmology, by matching the measured rotation velocities Vrot of galaxies to the maximum circular velocity of dark matter (DM) halos Vmax. For Vrot<50km/s, a major discrepancy arises between the observed and LCDM velocity functions. However, the manner in which different observational measures of Vrot are associated with Vmax is not straight forward in dwarf galaxies. We instead relate galaxies to DM halos using the empirical baryon- mass to halo-mass relation, and show that different observation…
We present a method to measure the growth of structure and the background geometry of the Universe -- with no a priori assumption about the underlying cosmological model. Using Canada-France-Hawaii Lensing Survey (CFHTLenS) shear data we simultaneously reconstruct the lensing amplitude, the linear intrinsic alignment amplitude, the redshift evolving matter power spectrum, P(k,z), and the co-moving distance, r(z). We find that lensing predominately constrains a single global power spectrum amplitude and several co-moving distance bins. Our approach can localise precise scales and redshifts wher…
We report the finding of a scaling relation among the cosmic-web anisotropy parameter $A$, the linear density rms fluctuation sigma(r) and the linear growth factor D(z). Using the tidal field derived from the Millennium Simulation on 512^{3} grids at z=0, 2, 5 and 127, we calculate the largest eigenvalues $λ$ of the local tidal tensor at each grid resolution and measure its distance-averaged two-point correlation function, xi_{lambda}, as a function of the cosines of polar angles cos(theta) in the local principal axis frame. We show that xi_{lambda} is quite anisotropic, increasing toward the …
New statistical properties of dark matter halos in Lagrangian space are presented. Tracing back the dark matter particles constituting bound halos resolved in a series of N-body simulations, we measure quantitatively the correlations of the proto-halo's inertia tensors with the local tidal tensors and investigate how the correlation strength depends on the proto-halo's sphericity, local density and filtering scale. It is shown that the majority of the proto-halos exhibit strong correlations between the two tensors provided that the tidal field is smoothed on the proto-halo's mass scale. The co…
We study the properties of voids in two different types of coupled scalar field theories. Due to the fifth force produced by the scalar field coupling, the matter particles feel stronger attraction amongst each other and cluster more quickly than they do in the standard LCDM model. Consequently voids in the coupled scalar field theories start to develop earlier and end up bigger, which is confirmed by our numerical simulations. We find that a significantly larger portion of the whole space is under-densed in the coupled scalar field theories and there are more voids whose sizes exceed given th…
The concordance model of cosmology, LCDM, provides a satisfactory description of the evolution of the universe and the growth of large scale structure. Despite considerable effort, this model does not at present provide a satisfactory description of small scale structure and the dynamics of bound objects like individual galaxies. In contrast, MOND provides a unique and predictively successful description of galaxy dynamics, but is mute on the subject of cosmology. Here I briefly review these contradictory world views, emphasizing the wealth of distinct, interlocking lines of evidence that went…
In recent postings, Foreman & Scott and Gnedin criticize my work on the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation (BTFR) of gas rich galaxies as tests of MOND and LCDM (McGaugh 2011a,b). These criticisms are rather redundant, as they mostly rehash material I have already discussed. Gnedin is concerned with explaining away the problem of the apparently missing baryons with ionized gas. This is one hypothetical possibility that I have previously discussed (McGaugh et al. 2010; McGaugh & Wolf 2010; McGaugh 2011b). Foreman & Scott claim to find a difference between the acceleration scale that they measure an…
$Λ$CDM-model predicts an excess of dark halos compared to the observations. The excess is seen from the estimates of the virialized mass inside the Local Supercluster and its surroundings. It is shown that account for cosmological velocity fluctuations in the process of formation of the population of dark halos it is possible to eliminate this contradiction remaining within the framework of the $Λ$CDM cosmology. Based on the formalism of Press and Schechter, we suggest a model of formation of dark halo population which takes into account the kinematic effects in the dark matter. The model allo…
Large galaxy redshift surveys have long been used to constrain cosmological models and structure formation scenarios. In particular, the largest structures discovered observationally are thought to carry critical information on the amplitude of large-scale density fluctuations or homogeneity of the universe, and have often challenged the standard cosmological framework. The Sloan Great Wall (SGW) recently found in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) region casts doubt on the concordance cosmological model with a cosmological constant (i.e. the flat LCDM model). Here we show that the existence …
The generalized Chaplygin gas cosmology provides a prime example for the class of unified dark matter models, which substitute the two dark components of the standard cosmological LCDM concordance model by a single dark component. The equation of state of the generalized Chaplygin gas is characterised by a parameter alpha such that the standard LCDM model is recovered in the case alpha=0 with respect to the background dynamics and the cosmic microwave background (CMB) statistics. This allows to investigate the concordance of different cosmological data sets with respect to alpha. We compare th…
We use a recently proposed luminosity distance measure for relatively nearby active galactic nuclei (AGNs) to test the predicted expansion of the Universe in the R_h=ct and LCDM cosmologies. This comparative study is particularly relevant to the question of whether or not the Universe underwent a transition from decelerated to accelerated expansion, which is believed to have occurred---on the basis of Type Ia SN studies---within the redshift range (0 < z < 1.3) that will eventually be sampled by these objects. We find that the AGN Hubble Diagram constructed from currently available sources doe…
If the Universe is dominated by cold dark matter and dark energy as in the currently popular LCDM cosmology, it is expected that large scale structures form gradually, with galaxy clusters of mass M > ~10^14 Msun appearing at around 6 Gyrs after the Big Bang (z ~ 1). Here, we report the discovery of 59 massive structures of galaxies with masses greater than a few x 10^13 Msun at redshifts between z=0.6 and 4.5 in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey fields. The massive structures are identified by running top-hat filters on the two dimensional spatial distribution of magnitude-limited s…
The mass distribution of halos, as specified by the halo mass function, is a key input for several cosmological probes. The sizes of $N$-body simulations are now such that, for the most part, results need no longer be statistics-limited, but are still subject to various systematic uncertainties. We investigate and discuss some of the reasons for these differences. Quantifying error sources and compensating for them as appropriate, we carry out a high-statistics study of dark matter halos from 67 $N$-body simulations to investigate the mass function and its evolution for a reference $Λ$CDM cosm…
A previous analysis of starburst-dominated HII Galaxies and HII regions has demonstrated a statistically significant preference for the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmology with zero active mass, known as the R_h=ct universe, over LCDM and its related dark-matter parametrizations. In this paper, we employ a 2-point diagnostic with these data to present a complementary statistical comparison of R_h=ct with Planck LCDM. Our 2-point diagnostic compares---in a pairwise fashion---the difference between the distance modulus measured at two redshifts with that predicted by each cosmology. Our results…
We present a new proxy for the overdensity peak height for which the large-scale clustering of haloes of a given mass does not vary significantly with the assembly history. The peak height, usually taken to be well represented by the virial mass, can instead be approximated by the mass inside spheres of different radii, which in some cases can be larger than the virial radius and therefore include mass outside the individual host halo. The sphere radii are defined as r = $a$ delta_t + $b$ log_10(M_vir/M_nl), where delta_t is the age relative to the typical age of galaxies hosted by haloes with…
We apply updated semi-analytic galaxy formation models simultaneously to the stored halo/subhalo merger trees of the Millennium and Millennium-II simulations. These differ by a factor of 125 in mass resolution, allowing explicit testing of resolution effects on predicted galaxy properties. We have revised the treatments of the transition between the rapid infall and cooling flow regimes of gas accretion, of the sizes of bulges and of gaseous and stellar disks, of supernova feedback, of the transition between central and satellite status as galaxies fall into larger systems, and of gas and star…
We map the neutral atomic gas content of M33 using high resolution VLA and GBT observations and fit a tilted ring model to determine the orientation of the extended gaseous disk and its rotation curve. The disk of M33 warps from 8 kpc outwards without substantial change of its inclination with respect to the line of sight. Rotational velocities rise steeply with radius in the inner disk, reaching 100 km/s in 4 kpc, then the rotation curve becomes more perturbed and flatter with velocities as high as 120-130 km/s out to 23 kpc. We derive the stellar mass surface density map of M33's optical dis…
We present results on the clustering of 282,068 galaxies in the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) sample of massive galaxies with redshifts 0.4<z<0.7 which is part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III project. Our results cover a large range of scales from ~0.5 to ~90 Mpc/h. We compare these estimates with the expectations of the flat LCDM cosmological model with parameters compatible with WMAP7 data. We use the MultiDark cosmological simulation together with a simple halo abundance matching technique, to estimate galaxy correlation functions, power spectra, abundance of subhaloes …
We present an adaptation of the standard scenario of disk-galaxy formation to the concordant LCDM cosmology aimed to derive analytical expressions for the scale length and rotation speed of present-day disks that form within four different, cosmologically motivated protogalactic dark matter halo-density profiles. We invoke a standard galaxy-formation model that includes virial equilibrium of spherical dark halos, specific angular momentum conservation during gas cooling, and adiabatic halo response to the gas inflow. The mean mass-fraction and mass-to-light ratio of the central stellar disk ar…
The analysis of Type Ia supernova data over the past decade has been a notable success story in cosmology. These standard candles offer us an unparalleled opportunity of studying the cosmological expansion out to a redshift of ~1.5. The consensus today appears to be that LCDM offers the best explanation for the luminosity-distance relationship seen in these events. However, a significant incompatibility is now emerging between the standard model and other equally important observations, such as those of the cosmic microwave background. LCDM does not provide an accurate representation of the co…
Based on a set of cosmological N-body simulations we analyze properties of the dark matter haloes (DM) in a galaxy mass range ($10^{11} - 10^{13} h^{-1}M_{\odot}$) in modified $\lcdm$ cosmology with additional dynamically screened scalar interactions in DM sector. Our simulations show that scalar interactions support picture of the Island Universe. Rapid structure formation processes are shifted into higher redshifts resulting in a much smaller accretion and merging rates for galactic haloes at low redshifts. Finally, we present how this "fifth" force affects halo properties, like density prof…
Unlike other observational signatures in cosmology, the angular-diameter distance d_A(z) uniquely reaches a maximum (at z_max) and then shrinks to zero towards the big bang. The location of this turning point depends sensitively on the model, but has been difficult to measure. In this paper, we estimate and use z_max inferred from quasar cores: (1) by employing a sample of 140 objects yielding a much reduced dispersion due to pre-constrained limits on their spectral index and luminosity, (2) by reconstructing d_A(z) using Gaussian processes, and (3) comparing the predictions of seven different…
In recent work we proposed a novel theory of dark matter (DM) superfluidity that matches the successes of the LambdaCDM model on cosmological scales while simultaneously reproducing MOdified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) phenomenology on galactic scales. The agents responsible for mediating the MONDian force law are superfluid phonons that couple to ordinary (baryonic) matter. In this paper we propose an alternative way for the MOND phenomenon to emerge from DM superfluidity. The central idea is to use higher-gradient corrections in the superfluid effective theory. These next-to-leading order term…
The LCDM cosmology offers a picture for galaxy formation that is broadly promising but difficult to reconcile with the evidence that environment has had strikingly little effect on the evolution of ellipticals and pure disk spiral galaxies. Reconciliation might be aided by adding to LCDM an evanescent component of matter with evolving mass and a fifth force large enough to aid early assembly of more nearly isolated protogalaxies. I present a simple illustration.
We present a detailed study of the redshift evolution of dark matter halo structural parameters in a LambdaCDM cosmology. We study the mass and redshift dependence of the concentration, shape and spin parameter in Nbody simulations spanning masses from 10^{10} Msun/h to 10^{15} Msun/h and redshifts from 0 to 2. We present a series of fitting formulas that accurately describe the time evolution of the concentration-mass relation since z=2. Using arguments based on the spherical collapse model we study the behaviour of the scale length of the density profile during the assembly history of haloes…
We present LCDM cosmological parameter constraints obtained from delensed microwave background power spectra. Lensing maps from a subset of DR4 data from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) are used to undo the lensing effect in ACT spectra observed at 150 and 98 GHz. At 150 GHz, we remove the lensing distortion with an effective efficiency of 30% (TT), 30% (EE), 26% (TE) and 20% (BB); this results in detections of the delensing effect at 8.7 sigma (TT), 5.1 sigma (EE), 2.6 sigma (TE), and 2.4 sigma (BB) significance. The combination of 150 and 98 GHz TT, EE, and TE delensed spectra is well …
We provide a model-independent reconstruction of dark energy from $z=0$ to $ \gtrsim 10^5$. We parameterise the model by a perfect fluid with a series of physically well-motivated bins in energy-density, such that the equation of state is always $-1 \le w \le 1$. Our method is capable of describing a range of theoretical models with smooth modifications to the expansion history. Combining the latest CMB, BAO, SN and local $H_0$ measurements, we obtain a large improvement of $Δχ^2=41.3$ over LCDM, at the expense of 33 additional parameters in the fit, with dark energy contributing significantly…
It has been known for over three decades that the monochromatic X-ray and UV luminosities in quasars are correlated, though non-linearly. This offers the possibility of using high-z quasars as standard candles for cosmological testing. In this paper, we use a recently assembled, high-quality catalog of 1598 quasars extending all the way to redshift ~6, to compare the predictions of the R_h=ct and LCDM cosmologies. In so doing, we affirm that the parameters characterizing the correlation depend only weakly on the chosen cosmology, and that both models account very well for the data. Unlike LCDM…
The standard cosmological paradigm currently lacks a detailed account of physics in the dark sector, the dark matter and energy that dominate cosmic evolution. In this paper, we consider the distinguishing factors between three alternative models - warm dark matter, quintessence and coupled dark matter-energy - and \lcdm{} through numerical simulations of cosmological structure formation. Key halo statistics - halo spin/velocity alignment between large-scale structure and neighboring haloes, halo formation time and migration - were compared across cosmologies within the redshift range 0$\leq$$…
We study the properties of building blocks (BBs, i.e. accreted satellites) and surviving satellites of present-day galaxies using the SAG semi-analytic model of galaxy formation in the context of a concordance Lambda Cold Dark Matter (LCDM) cosmology. We consider large numbers of DM halo merger trees spanning a wide range of masses (~1x10^10 - 2.14x10^15 Msun). We find higher metallicities for BBs with respect to surviving satellites, an effect produced by the same processes behind the build-up of the mass-metallicity relation. We prove that these metallicity differences arise from the higher …
We investigate the effect of coupled dark energy (cDE) on the spin alignments in isolated pairs of galactic halos, using the publicly available data from the hydrodynamical cDE simulations (H-CoDECs) which were run for various cDE models such as EXP001, EXP002, EXP003 (with exponential potential and constant coupling), EXP008e3 (with exponential potential and exponential coupling) and SUGRA003 (with supergravity potential and negative constant coupling) as well as for a standard LCDM cosmology (with the WMAP7 parameters). Measuring the cosines of the angles between the spin axes in isolated pa…
The status of the standard cosmological model, also known as "LCDM" is described. With some simple assumptions, this model fits a wide range of data, with just six (or seven) free parameters. One should be skeptical about this claim, since it implies that we now have an astonishingly good picture of the statistical properties of the large-scale Universe. However, the successes of the model cannot be denied, including more than 1000 sigma worth of detection of CMB anisotropy power. The model is older than most modern astrophysicists seem to appreciate, and has not fundamentally changed for more…
In this first paper we discuss the linear theory and the background evolution of a new class of models we dub SCDEW: Strongly Coupled DE, plus WDM. In these models, WDM dominates today's matter density; like baryons, WDM is uncoupled. Dark Energy is a scalar field $Φ$; its coupling to ancillary CDM, whose today's density is $\ll 1\, \%$, is an essential model feature. Such coupling, in fact, allows the formation of cosmic structures, in spite of very low WDM particle masses ($\sim 100$ eV). SCDEW models yields Cosmic Microwave Background and linear Large Scale features substantially undistingu…

The standard model of cosmology LCDM assumes general relativity, flat space, and the presence of a positive cosmological constant. We relax these assumptions allowing spatial curvature, time-dependent effective dark energy equation of state, as well as modifications of the Poisson equation for the lensing potential, and modifications of the growth of linear matter density perturbations in alternate combinations. Using six parameters characterizing these relations, we check LCDM for consistency utilizing cosmic microwave background anisotropies, cross correlations thereof with high-redshift gal…
We produce lensing potential and deflection-angle maps in order to simulate CMB weak-lensing via ray-tracing through the COupled Dark Energy Cosmological Simulations (CoDECS). The constructed maps reflect the N-body cosmic structures on a range of scales going from the arcminute to the degree scale. We investigate the variation of the lensing pattern due to the DE dynamics, characterised by different background and perturbation behaviours as a consequence of the interaction between the DE field and CDM. We study the results from three models differing in the background and perturbations evolut…
