Unlike other observational signatures in cosmology, the angular-diameter distance d_A(z) uniquely reaches a maximum (at z_max) and then shrinks to zero towards the big bang. The location of this turning point depends sensitively on the model, but has been difficult to measure. In this paper, we estimate and use z_max inferred from quasar cores: (1) by employing a sample of 140 objects yielding a much reduced dispersion due to pre-constrained limits on their spectral index and luminosity, (2) by reconstructing d_A(z) using Gaussian processes, and (3) comparing the predictions of seven different cosmologies and showing that the measured value of z_max can effectively discriminate between them. We find that z_max=1.70 +\- 0.20---an important new probe of the Universe's geometry. The most strongly favoured model is R_h=ct, followed by Planck LCDM. Several others, including Milne, Einstein-de Sitter and Static tired light are strongly rejected. According to these results, the R_h=ct universe, which predicts z_max=1.718, has a ~92.8% probability of being the correct cosmology. For consistency, we also carry out model selection based on d_A(z) itself. This test confirms that R_h=ct and Planck LCDM are among the few models that account for angular-size data better than those that are disfavoured by z_max. The d_A(z) comparison, however, is less discerning than that with z_max, due to the additional free parameter, H_0. We find that H_0=63.4 +\- 1.2 km/s/Mpc for R_h=ct, and 69.9 +\- 1.5 km/s/Mpc for LCDM. Both are consistent with previously measured values in each model, though they differ from each other by over 4 sigma. In contrast, model selection based on z_max is independent of H_0.
Using the Newman and Penrose spin coefficient (NP) formalism, we provide a derivation of the Dyer-Roeder equation for the angular diameter distance in cosmological space-times. We show that the geodesic deviation equation written in NP formalism is precisely the Dyer-Roeder equation for a general Friedman-Robertson-Walker (FRW) space-time, and then we examine the angular diameter distance to redshift relation in the case that a flat FRW metric is perturbed by a gravitational potential. We examine the perturbation in the case that the gravitational potential exhibits the properties of a thin gr…
The angular diameter distance of lens, $D_{Aol}$, of strong gravitational lensing systems has been claimed as a cosmic standard ruler. The first measurements for this distance were recently obtained to two well-known systems: B1608+656 and RXJ1131-1231. However, there is a range of possible systematic uncertainties which must be addressed in order to turn these systems into useful cosmic probes. In this paper, we confront $D_{Aol}$ with luminosity distances of type Ia supernovae and angular diameter distances of galaxy clusters to search for tensions between these cosmological measurements usi…
We present the direct measurement of the Hubble constant, yielding the direct measurement of the angular-diameter distance to NGC 6264 using the H$_{2}$O megamaser technique. Our measurement is based on sensitive observations of the circumnuclear megamaser disk from four observations with the Very Long Baseline Array, the Green Bank Telescope and the Effelsberg Telescope. We also monitored the maser spectral profile for 2.3 years using the Green Bank Telescope to measure accelerations of maser lines by tracking their line-of-sight velocities as they change with time. The measured accelerations…
The Megamaser Cosmology Project (MCP) aims to determine H0 by measuring angular-diameter distances to galaxies in the Hubble flow using observations of water vapor megamasers in the circumnuclear accretion disks of active galaxies. The technique is based only on geometry and determines H0 in one step, independent of standard candles and the extragalactic distance ladder. In Paper I we presented a VLBI map of the maser emission from the Seyfert 2 galaxy UGC 3789. The map reveals an edge-on, sub-parsec disk in Keplerian rotation, analogous to the megamaser disk in NGC 4258. Here we present 3.2 y…
Strong lensing time-delay systems constrain cosmological parameters via the so-called time-delay distance and the angular diameter distance to the lens. In previous studies, only the former information was used. In this paper, we show that the cosmological constraints improve significantly when the latter information is also included. Specifically, the angular diameter distance plays a crucial role in breaking the degeneracy between the curvature of the Universe and the time-varying equation of state of dark energy. Using a mock sample of 55 bright quadruple lens systems based on expectations …
We study the validity of cosmic distance duality relation between angular diameter and luminosity distances. To test this duality relation we use the latest Union2 Supernovae Type Ia (SNe Ia) data for estimating the luminosity distance. The estimation of angular diameter distance comes from the samples of galaxy clusters (real and mock) and FRIIb radio galaxies. We parameterize the distance duality relation as a function of redshift in six different ways. Our results rule out some of the parameterizations significantly.
The distance-redshift relation plays a fundamental role in constraining cosmological models. In this paper, we show that measurements of positions and time delays of strongly lensed images of a background galaxy, as well as those of the velocity dispersion and mass profile of a lens galaxy, can be combined to extract the angular diameter distance of the lens galaxy. Physically, as the velocity dispersion and the time delay give a gravitational potential ($GM/r$) and a mass ($GM$) of the lens, respectively, dividing them gives a physical size ($r$) of the lens. Comparing the physical size with …
The local expansion rate of the Universe is parametrized by the Hubble constant, $H_0$, the ratio between recession velocity and distance. Different techniques lead to inconsistent estimates of $H_0$. Observations of Type Ia supernovae (SNe) can be used to measure $H_0$, but this requires an external calibrator to convert relative distances to absolute ones. We use the angular diameter distance to strong gravitational lenses as a suitable calibrator, which is only weakly sensitive to cosmological assumptions. We determine the angular diameter distances to two gravitational lenses, $810^{+160}_…
Using a relatively complete observational data concerning four angular diameter distance (ADD) measurements and %synthetic combined SN+GRB observations representing current luminosity distance (LD) data, this paper investigates the %tension between compatibility of these two cosmological distances considering three classes of dark energy equation of state (EoS) reconstruction. In particular, we use strongly gravitationally lensed systems from various large systematic gravitational lens surveys and galaxy clusters, which yield the Hubble constant independent ratio between two angular diameter d…
Of all the distance and temporal measures in cosmology, the angular-diameter distance, d_A(z), uniquely reaches a maximum value at some finite redshift z_max and then decreases to zero towards the big bang. This effect has been difficult to observe due to a lack of reliable, standard rulers, though refinements to the identification of the compact structure in radio quasars may have overcome this deficiency. In this Letter, we assemble a catalog of 140 such sources with 0 < z < 3 for model selection and the measurement of z_max. In flat LCDM, we find that Omega_m= 0.24^{+0.1}_{-0.09}, fully con…
Total-angular-momentum (TAM) waves provide a set of basis functions for scalar, vector, and tensor fields that can be used in place of plane waves and that reflect the rotational symmetry of the spherical sky. Here we discuss three-point correlation functions, or bispectra in harmonic space, for scalar, vector, and tensor fields in terms of TAM waves. The Wigner-Eckart theorem dictates that the expectation value, assuming statistical isotropy, of the product of three TAM waves is the product of a Clebsch-Gordan coefficient (or Wigner-3j symbol) times a function only of the total-angular-moment…
Over the last decade observations at submillimetre (submm) and millimetre (mm) wavelengths, with their unique ability to trace molecular gas and dust, have attained a central role in our exploration of galaxies at all redshifts. Due to the limited sensitivities and angular resolutions of current submm/mm telescopes, however, only the most luminous objects have been uncovered at high redshifts, with interferometric follow-up observations succeeding in resolving the dust and gas reservoirs in only a handful of cases. The coming years will witness a drastic improvement in the current situation, t…
The Cosmology Large Angular Scale Surveyor (CLASS) instrument will measure the polarization of the cosmic microwave background at 40, 90, and 150 GHz from Cerro Toco in the Atacama desert of northern Chile. In this paper, we describe the optical design of the 40 GHz telescope system. The telescope is a diffraction limited catadioptric design consisting of a front-end Variable-delay Polarization Modulator (VPM), two ambient temperature mirrors, two cryogenic dielectric lenses, thermal blocking filters, and an array of 36 smooth-wall scalar feedhorn antennas. The feed horns guide the signal to a…
We examine the possibility that circles in the cosmic microwave background could be formed by the interaction of a gravitational wave pulse emitted in some pre-big-bang phase of the universe with the last scattering surface. We derive the expected size distribution of such circles, as well as their typical ring width and (for concentric circles) angular separation. We apply these results in particular to conformal cyclic cosmology, ekpyrotic cosmology as well as loop quantum cosmology with and without inflation in order to determine how the predicted geometric properties of these circles would…
The Cosmology Large Angular Scale Surveyor (CLASS) observes the polarized cosmic microwave background (CMB) over the angular scales of 1$^\circ \lesssim θ\leq$ 90$^\circ$ with the aim of characterizing primordial gravitational waves and cosmic reionization. We report on the on-sky performance of the CLASS Q-band (40 GHz), W-band (90 GHz), and dichroic G-band (150/220 GHz) receivers that have been operational at the CLASS site in the Atacama desert since June 2016, May 2018, and September 2019, respectively. We show that the noise-equivalent power measured by the detectors matches the expected …
We report circular polarization measurements from the first two years of observation with the 40 GHz polarimeter of the Cosmology Large Angular Scale Surveyor (CLASS). CLASS is conducting a multi-frequency survey covering 75% of the sky from the Atacama Desert designed to measure the cosmic microwave background (CMB) linear E and B polarization on angular scales $1^\circ \lesssim θ\leq 90^\circ$, corresponding to a multipole range of $2 \leq \ell \lesssim 200$. The modulation technology enabling measurements of linear polarization at the largest angular scales from the ground, the Variable-del…
Small scale CMB angular power spectrum contains not only primordial CMB information but also many contaminants coming from secondary anisotropies. Most of the latter depend on the cosmological model but are often marginalised over. We propose a new analysis of the SPT data focusing on the cosmological contribution of the thermal Sunyaev Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect. We model the tSZ angular spectrum with the halo model and train a random forest algorithm to speed up its computation. We show that using the cosmological information of the tSZ on top of the primordial CMB one contained in SPT data bri…
We use three different data sets, specifically $H(z)$ measurements from cosmic chronometers, the HII-galaxy Hubble diagram, and reconstructed quasar-core angular-size measurements, to perform a joint analysis of three flat cosmological models: the $R_{\rm h}=ct$ Universe, $Λ$CDM, and $w$CDM. For $R_{\rm h}=ct$, the 1$σ$ best-fit value of the Hubble constant $H_0$ is $62.336\pm1.464$ $\mathrm{km \ s^{-1} \ Mpc^{-1}}$, which matches previous measurements ($\sim 63$ $\mathrm{km \ s^{-1} \ Mpc^{-1}}$) based on best fits to individual data sets. For $Λ$CDM, our inferred value of the Hubble constant…
Galaxy angular-power spectrum and autocorrelation functions (ACFs) provide information about the distribution of matter by using galaxy counts as a proxy. In this study, we are going to estimate autocorrelation angular power spectrum and angular autocorrelation function for EMU-ASKAP 5 sigma sources and then compare them with results from NVSS. We will also use SUMSS data to compare ACF results using Landy-Szalay estimator. EMU-ASKAP will provide excellent opportunity to observe universe with high sensitivity and is likely going to observe millions of high redshift sources which will help in s…
Using the focusing equation, the equation for the cosmological angular diameter distance is derived, based on the ideas of Academician Ya.B. Zel'dovich, namely, that the distribution of matter at small angles is not homogeneous, and the light cone is close to being empty. We propose some ways of testing a method for measuring the angular diameter distances and show that the proposed method leads to results that agree better with the experimental data than those obtained by the usual methods.
The Cosmology Large Angular Scale Surveyor (CLASS) is a polarization-sensitive telescope array located at an altitude of 5,200 m in the Chilean Atacama Desert. CLASS is designed to measure "E-mode" (even parity) and "B-mode" (odd parity) polarization patterns in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) over large angular scales with the aim of improving our understanding of inflation, reionization, and dark matter. CLASS is currently observing with three telescopes covering four frequency bands: one at 40 GHz (Q); one at 90 GHz (W1); and one dichroic system at 150/220 GHz (G). In these proceeding…
We study the inflation process of universe based on the renormalizable quantum gravity formulated as a conformal field theory (CFT). We show that the power-law CFT spectrum approaches to that of the Harrison-Zel'dovich-Peebles type as the amplitude of gravitational potential gradually reduces during the inflation. The non-Gaussanity parameter is preserved within order of unity due to the diffeomorphism invariance. Sharp fall-off of the angular power spectrum of cosmic microwave background (CMB) at large scale is understood as a consequence of the existence of dynamical scale of the quantum gra…
We present cosmological parameter constraints from a joint analysis of three cosmological probes: the tomographic cosmic shear signal in $\sim$450 deg$^2$ of data from the Kilo Degree Survey (KiDS), the galaxy-matter cross-correlation signal of galaxies from the Galaxies And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey determined with KiDS weak lensing, and the angular correlation function of the same GAMA galaxies. We use fast power spectrum estimators that are based on simple integrals over the real-space correlation functions, and show that they are practically unbiased over relevant angular frequency range…
The Cosmology Large Angular Scale Surveyor (CLASS) aims to detect and characterize the primordial B-mode signal and make a sample-variance-limited measurement of the optical depth to reionization. CLASS is a ground-based, multi-frequency microwave polarimeter that surveys 70% of the microwave sky every day from the Atacama Desert. The focal plane detector arrays of all CLASS telescopes contain smooth-walled feedhorns that couple to transition-edge sensor (TES) bolometers through symmetric planar orthomode transducer (OMT) antennas. These low noise polarization-sensitive detector arrays are fab…
We constructed a new all-sky Compton parameter map (y-map) of the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect from the 100 to 857 GHz frequency channel maps delivered within the Planck data release 4. The improvements in terms of noise and systematic effects translated into a y-map with a noise level smaller by ~7% compared to the maps released in 2015, and with significantly reduced survey stripes. The produced 2020 y-map is also characterized by residual foreground contamination, mainly due to thermal dust emission at large angular scales and to CIB and extragalactic point sources at small angul…
We present a new analysis on how to distinguish between isotropic and anisotropic cosmological models based on tracking the angular displacements of a large number of distant quasars over an extended period of time, and then performing a multipole-vector decomposition of the resulting displacement maps. We find that while the GAIA mission operating at its nominal specifications does not have sufficient angular resolution to resolve anisotropic universes from isotropic ones using this method within a reasonable timespan of ten years, a next-generation GAIA-like survey with a resolution ten time…
The Cosmology Large Angular Scale Surveyor (CLASS) is a four-telescope array observing the largest angular scales ($2 \lesssim \ell \lesssim 200$) of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization. These scales encode information about reionization and inflation during the early universe. The instrument stability necessary to observe these angular scales from the ground is achieved through the use of a variable-delay polarization modulator (VPM) as the first optical element in each of the CLASS telescopes. Here we develop a demodulation scheme used to extract the polarization timestreams f…
