When the atoms of a dimer remain most of the time very far apart, in so-called long-range molecular states, their mutual interaction is ruled by plain atomic properties. The high-resolution spectroscopic study of some molecular excited states populated by photoassociation of cold atoms (photoassociative spectroscopy) gives a good illustration of this property. It provides accurate determinations of atomic radiative lifetimes, which are known to be sensitive tests for atomic calculations. A number of such analyses has been performed up to now, for all stable alkali atoms and for some other atomic species (Ca, Sr, Yb). A systematic review of these determinations is attempted here, with special attention paid to accuracy issues.
We report photoassociative spectroscopy of $^{88}$Sr$_2$ in a magneto-optical trap operating on the ${^1S_0}\to{^3P_1}$ intercombination line at 689 nm. Photoassociative transitions are driven with a laser red-detuned by 600-2400 MHz from the ${^1S_0}\to{^1P_1}$ atomic resonance at 461 nm. Photoassociation takes place at extremely large internuclear separation, and the photoassociative spectrum is strongly affected by relativistic retardation. A fit of the transition frequencies determines the ${^1P_1}$ atomic lifetime ($τ=5.22 \pm 0.03$ ns) and resolves a discrepancy between experiment and re…
We demonstrate photoassociation (PA) of ultracold fermionic $^{87}$Sr atoms. The binding energies of a series of molecular states on the $^1Σ^+_u$ $5s^2\,^1$S$_0+5s5p\,^1$P$_1$ molecular potential are fit with the semiclassical LeRoy-Bernstein model, and PA resonance strengths are compared to predictions based on the known $^1$S$_0+^1$S$_0$ ground state potential. Similar measurements and analysis were performed for the bosonic isotopes $^{84}$Sr and $^{86}$Sr, allowing a combined analysis of the long-range portion of the excited-state potential and determination of the $5s5p\,^1$P$_1$ atomic …
We use quantum scattering methods to calculate the light-induced collisional loss of laser-cooled and trapped magnesium atoms for detunings up to 30 atomic linewidths to the red of the 1S_0-1P_1 cooling transition. Magnesium has no hyperfine structure to complicate the theoretical studies. We evaluate both the radiative and nonradiative mechanisms of trap loss. The radiative escape mechanism via allowed 1Sigma_u excitation is dominant for more than about one atomic linewidth detuning. Molecular vibrational structure due to photoassociative transitions to bound states begins to appear beyond ab…
The atomic states of the W IX (W8+) tungsten ion lying below the W9+ ionisation threshold have been studied theoretically, employing the multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock method with configuration interaction. The level electronic structures and their energies are presented. The electric dipole (E1), magnetic dipole (M1), electric quadrupole (E2), and magnetic quadrupole (M2) radiative transitions have been computed in order to calculate the radiative lifetimes of given states. Transition wavelengths, energies, and decay rates are also presented for selected high-intensity E1 transitions. …
The photoionization cross-sections of two even-parity excited states, $5d6d ^3D_1$ and $6s7d ^3D_{2}$, of atomic Ba at the ionization-laser wavelength of 556.6 nm were measured. We found that the total cross-section depends on the relative polarization of the atoms and the ionization-laser light. With density-matrix algebra, we show that, in general, there are at most three parameters in the photoionization cross-section. Some of these parameters are determined in this work. We also present the measurement of the radiative lifetime of five even-parity excited states of barium.
Energy levels and radiative rates for transitions in five Br-like ions (Sr IV, Y V, Zr VI, Nb VII and Mo VIII) are calculated with the general-purpose relativistic atomic structure package ({\sc grasp}). Extensive configuration interaction has been included and results are presented among the lowest 31 levels of the 4s$^2$4p$^5$, 4s$^2$4p$^4$4d and 4s4p$^6$ configurations. Lifetimes for these levels have also been determined, although unfortunately no measurements are available with which to compare. However, recently theoretical results have been reported by Singh {\em et al} [Phys. Scr. {\bf…
The first metastable triplet state of HeH$^+$ was found to be present in ion beam experiments, with its lifetime estimated to be between hundreds of milliseconds and thousand of seconds. In this work, we use {\it ab initio} methods to evaluate the radiative lifetimes of the six vibrational levels of the $a\ ^3Σ^+$ of HeH$^+$. The transition $a\ ^3Σ^+ \rightarrow X \ ^1Σ^+$ is spin-forbidden, but acquires intensity through spin-orbit interaction with the singlet and triplet $Π$ states. Large scale CASSCF/MRCI calculations using an adapted basis set were performed to determine the potential ener…
The fluorescence spectrum resulting from laser excitation of the A^{2}Π_{1/2} - X^{2}Σ^{+} (0,0) band of ytterbium monofluoride, YbF, has been recorded and analyzed to determine the Franck-Condon factors. The measured values are compared with those predicted from Rydberg-Klein-Rees (RKR) potential energy curves. From the fluorescence decay curve the radiative lifetime of the A^{2}Π_{1/2} state is measured to be 28\pm2 ns, and the corresponding transition dipole moment is 4.39\pm0.16 D. The implications for laser cooling YbF are discussed.
The intrinsic radiative lifetimes of the $5d^{10}6s$ $^{2}\text{S}_{1/2}$ and $5d^{9}6s^{2}$ $^{2}\text{D}_{3/2}$ bound excited states in the platinum anion $\text{Pt}^{-}$ have been studied at cryogenic temperatures at the Double ElectroStatic Ion Ring Experiment (DESIREE) facility at Stockholm University. The intrinsic lifetime of the higher-lying $5d^{10}6s$ $^{2}\text{S}_{1/2}$ state was measurement to be 2.54$\pm$0.10 s, while only a lifetime in the range of 50 - 200 ms could be estimated for the $5d^{9}6s^{2}$ $^{2}\text{D}_{3/2}$ fine-structure level. The storage lifetime of the $\text{…
The best limit on the electron electric dipole moment (eEDM) comes from the ACME II experiment [Nature \textbf{562} (2018), 355-360] which probes physics beyond the Standard Model at energy scales well above 1 TeV. ACME II measured the eEDM by monitoring electron spin precession in a cold beam of the metastable H$^3Δ_1$ state of thorium monoxide (ThO) molecules, with an observation time $τ\approx 1$ ms for each molecule. We report here a new measurement of the lifetime of the ThO (H$^3Δ_1$) state, $τ_H = 4.2\pm 0.5$ ms. Using an apparatus within which $τ\approx τ_H$ will enable a substantial r…
Magnetic quadrupole and electric octupole transitions from the configurations $4p^54d^{N+1}$ and $4p^64d^{N-1}4f$ were calculated along with magnetic dipole, electric dipole and electric quadrupole radiative transitions in quasirelativistic Hartree-Fock approximation. Their significance in determining the metastable level radiative lifetimes was investigated along several isoelectronic sequences for the ions from $Z=50$ to $Z=92$. Strontium-like ions, zirconium-like ions, molybdenum-like ions and rhodium-like ions were studied comprehensively. Remaining isoelectronic sequences with the ground …
We tabulate spontaneous emission rates for all possible 811 electric-dipole-allowed transitions between the 75 lowest-energy states of Ca I. These involve the $4sns$ ($n=4-8$), $4snp$ ($n=4-7$), $4snd$ ($n=3-6$), $4snf$ ($n=4-6$), $4p^2$, and $3d4p$ electronic configurations. We compile the transition rates by carrying out ab initio relativistic calculations using the combined method of configuration interaction and many-body perturbation theory. The results are compared to the available literature values. The tabulated rates can be useful in various applications, such as optimizing laser cool…

To assess the accuracy of the MCDHF transition energies, we have also performed calculations using the many-body perturbation theory (MBPT). Comparisons are made between the present MCDHF and MBPT data sets, as well as with other available experimenta…
We report calculations of energy levels, radiative decay rates, and lifetimes for transitions among the 3s$^2$3p$^5$, 3s3p$^6$, and 3s$^2$3p$^4$3d configurations of Cl-like W LVIII. The general-purpose relativistic atomic structure package (GRASP) has been adopted for our calculations. Comparisons are made with the most recent results of Mohan et al. [Can. J. Phys. {\bf 92} (2014) xxx] and discrepancies in lifetimes are noted, up to four orders of magnitude in some instances. Our energy levels are estimated to be accurate to better than 0.5\%, whereas results for radiative rates and lifetimes …
We have measured the radiative lifetimes of ns, np and nd Rydberg states of rubidium in the range 28 < n < 45. To enable long-lived states to be measured, our experiment uses slow-moving Rb atoms in a magneto-optical trap (MOT). Two experimental techniques have been adopted to reduce random and systematic errors. First, a narrow-bandwidth pulsed laser is used to excite the target Rydberg state, resulting in minimal shot-to-shot variation in the initial state population. Second, we monitor the target state population as a function of time delay from the laser pulse using a short-duration, milli…

Complete and consistent atomic data, including excitation energies, lifetimes, wavelengths, and E1, E2, M1 line strengths, oscillator strengths, and transition rates among these 318 levels are provided. Comparisons are made betw…
New experiments were proposed recently to investigate the regime of cold atomic and molecular ion-atom collision processes in a special hybrid neutral-atom--ion trap under high vacuum conditions. The collisional cooling of laser pre-cooled Ca$^+$ ions by ultracold Na atoms is being studied. Modeling this process requires knowledge of the radiative lifetime of the excited singlet A$^1Σ^+$ state of the (NaCa)$^+$ molecular system. We calculate the rate coefficient for radiative charge transfer using a semiclassical approach. The dipole radial matrix elements between the ground and the excited st…
We present a combined experimental and theoretical study on the radiative lifetime of CO in the $a^3Π_{1,2}, v=0$ state. CO molecules in a beam are prepared in selected rotational levels of this metastable state, Stark-decelerated and electrostatically trapped. From the phosphorescence decay in the trap, the radiative lifetime is measured to be $2.63\pm0.03$ ms for the $a^3Π_1, v=0, J=1$ level. From spin-orbit coupling between the $a^3Π$ and the $A^1Π$ state a 20% longer radiative lifetime of 3.16 ms is calculated for this level. It is concluded that coupling to other $^1Π$ states contributes …
A method is proposed to manipulate the annihilation dynamics of a dense gas of positronium atoms employing superradiance and subradiance regimes of the cooperative spontaneous emission of the system. The annihilation dynamics is controlled by the gas density and by the intensity of the driving strong resonant laser field. In particular, the method allows to increase the annihilation lifetime of an ensemble of positronium atoms more than hundred times by trapping the atoms in the excited state via collective radiative effects in the resonant laser and cavity fields.
Energy levels of 30 low-lying states of Lu2+ and allowed electric-dipole matrix elements between these states are evaluated using a relativistic all-order method in which all single, double and partial triple excitations of Dirac-Fock wave functions are included to all orders of perturbation theory. Matrix elements are critically evaluated for their accuracy and recommended values of the matrix elements are given together with uncertainty estimates. Line strengths, transition rates and lifetimes of the metastable 5d(3/2) and 5d(5/2) states are calculated. Recommended values are given for stati…

We estimate the range of the radiative lifetime and energy of the anomalous, low-energy $3/2^+(7.8 \pm 0.5$ eV) state in the $^{229}$Th nucleus. Our phenomenological calculations are based on the available experimental data for the intensities of $M1$ and $E2$ transitions between excited levels of the $^{229}$Th nucleus in the $K^π[Nn_ZΛ]=5/2^+[633]$ and $3/2^+[631]$ rotational bands. We also discuss the influence of certain branching coefficients, which affect the currently accepted measured energy of the isomeric state. From this work, we establish a favored region where the transition lifet…
Recently, S. Aggarwal [Chin. Phys. B 23 (2014) 093203] reported energy levels, radiative rates and lifetimes for the lowest 60 levels belonging to the 2s$^2$2p$^5$, 2s2p$^6$ and 2s$^2$2p$^4$3$\ell$ configurations of F-like tungsten. There is no discrepancy for his calculated energies for the levels and the radiative rates for the limited number of E1 transitions, but the reported results for lifetimes are highly inaccurate. According to our calculations, errors in his reported lifetimes are up to 6 orders of magnitude for several levels. Here we report the correct lifetimes for future comparis…

B 24 (2015) 053201] reported energy levels, radiative rates and lifetimes for the lowest 148 levels belonging to the 3s$^2$3p, 3s3p$^2$, 3s$^2$3d, 3s3p3d, 3p$^3$, 3p$^2$3d, 3s3d$^2$, 3p3d$^2$, and 3d$^3$ configurations of Al-like tungsten. While their calculated energies for the levels and the radiative rates for transitions are correct, the reported results for lifetimes are completely wrong. According to our calculations, errors in their reported lifetimes are up to 14 orders of magnitude for over 90\% of the levels. Here we report the correct lifeti…

High resolution ($Δλ$ ~ 0.65 nm) dispersed laser induced fluorescence (DLIF) spectra and radiative decay curves of numerous bands detected in the medium resolution LIF excitation spectra were recorded. The vibronic energy levels of the $\tilde{X} \, ^2Σ^+$ state were predicted using a discrete variable representation approach and compared with o…

A different technique is used to study the radiative decay of a metastable state in multiply ionized atoms. With use of a unitary Penning trap to selectively capture Kr$^{17+}$ ions from an ion source at NIST, the decay of the 3d $^2D_{5/2}$ metastable state is measured in isolation at low energy, without any active cooling. The highly ionized atoms are trapped in the fine structure of the electronic ground configuration with an energy spread of 4(1) eV, which is narrower than within the ion source by a factor of about 100. By observing the visible 637 nm photon emission of the forbidden trans…
We report a precise determination of the lifetime of the (4p)$^2$P$_{3/2}$ state of $^{40}$Ca$^+$, $τ_{\textrm{P}_{3/2}}=6.639(42)$ ns, using a combination of measurements of the induced light shift and scattering rate on a single trapped ion. Good agreement with the result of a recent high-level theoretical calculation, $6.69(6)$ ns [Safronova et al., PRA 83, 012503 (2011)], but a 6-$σ$ discrepancy with the most precise previous experimental value, $6.924(19)$ ns [Jin et al., PRL 70, 3213 (1993)] is found. To corroborate the consistency and accuracy of the new measurements, relativistically c…

Two-step photon excitation of ions produced by laser ablation has been utilized to populate the levels. Theoretical calculations of the radiative lifetimes of the measured levels and transition probabilities from these levels are reported. The calculat…

In the present work the lowest 102, 125 and 139 levels have been considered for the respective ions. Additionally, calculations have also been performed with the flexible atomic code ({\sc fac}) to (particularly) confirm the accuracy of energy l…
The Stark shift of the ytterbium optical clock transition due to room temperature blackbody radiation is dominated by a static Stark effect, which was recently measured to high accuracy [J. A. Sherman et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 153002 (2012)]. However, room temperature operation of the clock at 10^{-18} inaccuracy requires a dynamic correction to this static approximation. This dynamic correction largely depends on a single electric dipole matrix element for which theoretically and experimentally derived values disagree significantly. We determine this important matrix element by two indepe…
Photodetachment thermometry on a beam of OH$^-$ in a cryogenic storage ring cooled to below 10 K is carried out using two-dimensional, frequency and time dependent photodetachment spectroscopy over 20 minutes of ion storage. In equilibrium with the low-level blackbody field, we find an effective radiative temperature near 15 K with about 90% of all ions in the rotational ground state. We measure the J = 1 natural lifetime (about 193 s) and determine the OH$^-$ rotational transition dipole moment with 1.5% uncertainty. We also measure rotationally dependent relative near-threshold photodetachme…
The decay of Rydberg-atom-ion molecules (RAIMs) due to non-adiabatic couplings between electronic potential energy surfaces is investigated. We employ the Born-Huang representation and perform numerical simulations using a Crank-Nicolson algorithm. The non-adiabatic lifetimes of rubidium RAIMs for the lowest ten vibrational states, $ν$, are computed for selected Rydberg principal quantum numbers, $n$. The non-adiabatic lifetimes are found to generally exceed the radiative Rydberg-atom lifetimes. We observe and explain a trend of the lifetimes as a function of $ν$ and $n$, and attribute irregul…

Magneto-optically trapped atoms enable the determination of lifetimes of metastable states and higher lying excited states like the $\rm{5d^{2}~^{3}F_{2}}$ state in barium. The state is efficiently populated by driving strong transitions from metastable states within the cooling cycle of the barium MOT. The lifetime is inferred from the increase of MOT fluorescence after the transfer of up to $30\,\%$ of the trapped atoms to this state. The radiative decay of the $\rm{5d^{2}~^{3}F_{2}}$ state cascades to the cooling cycle of the MOT with a probability of $96.0(7)\,\%$ corresponding to a trap l…
Energy levels, radiative rates and lifetimes are reported for four S-like ions, namely Sc~VI, V VIII, Cr IX, and Mn~X. Two independent atomic structure codes, namely the general-purpose relativistic atomic structure package ({\sc grasp}) and the flexible atomic code ({\sc fac}), have been adopted for calculating the energy levels, with differing amounts of configuration interaction. This is mainly to make some assessment of accuracy. However, the {\sc grasp} alone is used for calculating the remaining parameters. Results are reported for varying number of levels of these ions, and for calculat…
We present lifetime measurements using beam-foil techniques for radiative transitions from the 3$p^4$($^1S$)4$s$ $^2S_{1/2}$, 3$p^4$($^3P$)5$s$ $^2P_{1/2,3/2}$, and 3$p^4$($^3P$)3$d$ $^2F_{5/2}$ levels in Cl I and the corresponding results of the oscillator strengths for transitions at 1004.68, 1079.88, 1090.73, and 1094.77 Å, respectively. We compare our experimental results with available theoretical calculations and astronomical observations in an effort to resolve discrepancies among them.
Energies and lifetimes are reported for the lowest 136 levels of Fe XIV, belonging to the (1s$^2$2s$^2$2p$^6$) 3s$^2$3p, 3s3p$^2$, 3s$^2$3d, 3p$^3$, 3s3p3d, 3p$^2$3d, 3s3d$^2$, 3p3d$^2$ and 3s$^24\ell$ configurations. Additionally, radiative rates, oscillator strengths and line strengths are calculated for all electric dipole (E1), magnetic dipole (M1), electric quadrupole (E2) and magnetic quadrupole (M2) transitions. Theoretical lifetimes determined from these radiative rates for most levels show satisfactory agreement with earlier calculations, as well as with measurements. Electron impact …
Molecular hydrogen ions in weakly bound states close to the first dissociation threshold are attractive quantum sensors for measuring the proton-to-electron mass ratio and hyperfine-induced ortho-para mixing. The experimental accuracy of previous spectroscopic studies relying on fast ion beams could be improved by using state-of-the-art ion trap setups. With the electric dipole moment vanishing in H$_2^+$ and preventing fast spontaneous emission, radiative lifetimes of the order of weeks are found. We include the effect of black-body radiation that can lead to photodissociation and rovibronic …
We study an excited atom-polar molecular ion chemical reaction (Ca$^*$ + BaCl$^+$) at low temperature by utilizing a hybrid atom-ion trapping system. The reaction rate and product branching fractions are measured and compared to model calculations as a function of both atomic quantum state and collision energy. At the lowest collision energy we find that the chemical dynamics dramatically differ from capture theory predictions and are primarily dictated by the radiative lifetime of the atomic quantum state instead of the underlying excited-state interaction potential. We provide a simple rule …

Einstein A-coefficients are provided for all E1, E2, M1 and M2 transitions, while lifetimes are compared with available measurements as well as theoretical results, and no large discrepancies noted. Our energy levels are assessed to be accurate to better than 1\% for a majority of levels, and A-values …
