Medium resolution ($Δν$ ~ 3 GHz) laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) excitation spectra of a rotationally cold sample of YbOH in the 17300-17950 cm$^{-1}$ range have been recorded using two-dimensional (excitation and dispersed fluorescence) spectroscopy. High resolution ($Δλ$ ~ 0.65 nm) dispersed laser induced fluorescence (DLIF) spectra and radiative decay curves of numerous bands detected in the medium resolution LIF excitation spectra were recorded. The vibronic energy levels of the $\tilde{X} \, ^2Σ^+$ state were predicted using a discrete variable representation approach and compared with observations. The radiative decay curves were analyzed to produce fluorescence lifetimes. DLIF spectra resulting from high resolution ($Δν$ < 10 MHz) LIF excitation of individual low-rotational lines in the $\tilde{A} \, ^2Π_{1/2}(0,0,0) - \tilde{X} \, ^2Σ^+(0,0,0)$, $\tilde{A} \, ^2Π_{1/2}(1,0,0) - \tilde{X} \, ^2Σ^+(0,0,0)$, $[17.73]Ω=0.5(0,0,0) - \tilde{X} \, ^2Σ^+(0,0,0)$ bands were also recorded. The DLIF spectra were analyzed to determine branching ratios which were combined with radiative lifetimes to obtain transition dipole moments. The implications for laser cooling and trapping of YbOH are discussed.
We report a generally applicable computational and experimental approach to determine vibronic branching ratios in linear polyatomic molecules to the $10^{-5}$ level, including for nominally symmetry forbidden transitions. These methods are demonstrated in CaOH and YbOH, showing approximately two orders of magnitude improved sensitivity compared with the previous state of the art. Knowledge of branching ratios at this level is needed for the successful deep laser cooling of a broad range of molecular species.
Vibrational branching ratios in the B$^2Σ^+$ -- X$^2Σ^+$ and A$^2Π$ -- X$^2Σ^+$ optical-cycling transitions of BaH molecules are investigated using measurements and {\it ab initio} calculations. The experimental values are determined using fluorescence and absorption detection. The observed branching ratios have a very sensitive dependence on the difference in the equilibrium bond length between the excited and ground state, $Δr_e$: a 1 pm (.5\%) displacement can have a 25\% effect on the branching ratios but only a 1\% effect on the lifetime. The measurements are combined with theoretical cal…
We present a measurement of the branching fractions for decay from the long-lived $5D_{5/2}$ level in \Ba. The branching fraction for decay into the $6S_{1/2}$ ground state was found to be $0.846(25)_{\mathrm{stat}}(4)_{\mathrm{sys}}$. We also report an improved measurement of the $5D_{5/2}$ lifetime, $τ_{5D_{5/2}}=31.2(0.9)$~s. Together these measurements provide the first experimental determination of transition rates for decay out of the $5D_{5/2}$ level. The low ($<7 \times 10^{-12}$~Torr) pressure in the ion trap in which these measurements were made simplified data acquisition and analys…
We report a method for the precision measurement of the oscillator strengths and the branching ratios of the decay channels of the $6d7p$ $^3F_2$ state in $^{226}$Ra. This method exploits a set of metastable states present in Ra, allowing a measurement of the oscillator strengths that does not require knowledge of the number of atoms in the atomic beam. We measure the oscillator strengths and the branching ratios for decays to the $7s6d$ $^3D_1$, $7s6d$ $^3D_2$, and $7s6d$ $^1D_2$ states and constrain the branching ratio to the $7s6d$ $^3D_3$ state to be less than 0.4$\%$ (68$\%$ confidence li…
Using the relativistic coupled-cluster method, we have calculated ionization potentials, E1 matrix elements and dipole polarizabilities of many low-lying states of Ca$^+$. Contributions from the Breit interaction are given explicitly for these properties. Polarizabilities of the ground and the first excited d-states are determined by evaluating the wave functions that are perturbed to first order by the electric dipole operator and the black-body radiation shifts are estimated from these results. We also report the results of branching ratios and lifetimes of the first excited p-states using b…
Measurement of the branching ratios for $6P_{1/2}$ decays to $6S_{1/2}$ and $5D_{3/2}$ in $^{138}$Ba$^+$ are reported with the decay probability from $6P_{1/2}$ to $5D_{3/2}$ measured to be $p=0.268177\pm(37)_\mathrm{stat}-(20)_\mathrm{sys}$. This result differs from a recent report by $12σ$. A detailed account of systematics is given and the likely source of the discrepancy is identified. The new value of the branching ratio is combined with a previous experimental results to give a new estimate of $τ=7.855(10)\,\mathrm{ns}$ for the $6P_{1/2}$ lifetime. In addition, ratios of matrix elements …
Branching fractions were measured for electric dipole transitions from the 5p upper levels to the 5s levels in neutral krypton atoms. The measurements were made with a wall-stabilized electric arc and a 2m monochromator for the spectral lines in the visible, and with a hollow cathode lamp and the NIST 2m-Fourier transform spectrometer for the lines in the near infrared. A semi-empirical calculation, based on accurately known lifetimes for six upper levels, was used to calculate lifetimes for which accurate measurements do not exist. This resulted in a complete set of lifetimes for all 5p level…
Tiny radiative losses below the 0.1% level can prove ruinous to the effective laser cooling of a molecule. In this paper the laser cooling of a hydride is studied with rovibronic detail using ab initio quantum chemistry in order to document the decays to all possible electronic states (not just the vibrational branching within a single electronic transition) and to identify the most populated final quantum states. The effect of spin-orbit and associated couplings on the properties of the lowest excited states of BaH are analysed in detail. The lifetimes of the A$^2Π_{1/2}$, H$^2Δ_{3/2}$ and E$…
We measure the upper state lifetime and two ratios of vibrational branching fractions f_{v'v} on the B^{3}Π_{1}(v') - X^{1}Σ^{+}(v) transition of TlF. We find the B state lifetime to be 99(9) ns. We also determine that the off-diagonal vibrational decays are highly suppressed: f_{01}/f_{00} < 2x10^{-4} and f_{02}/f_{00} = 1.10(6)%, in excellent agreement with their predicted values of f_{01}/f_{00} < 8x10^{-4} and f_{02}/f_{00} = 1.0(2)% based on Franck-Condon factors calculated using Morse and RKR potentials. The implications of these results for the possible laser cooling of TlF and fundamen…
We estimate the range of the radiative lifetime and energy of the anomalous, low-energy $3/2^+(7.8 \pm 0.5$ eV) state in the $^{229}$Th nucleus. Our phenomenological calculations are based on the available experimental data for the intensities of $M1$ and $E2$ transitions between excited levels of the $^{229}$Th nucleus in the $K^π[Nn_ZΛ]=5/2^+[633]$ and $3/2^+[631]$ rotational bands. We also discuss the influence of certain branching coefficients, which affect the currently accepted measured energy of the isomeric state. From this work, we establish a favored region where the transition lifet…
For laser cooling considerations, we have theoretically investigated the electronic, rovibrational and hypefine structures of BaF molecule. The highly diagonal Franck-Condon factors and the branching ratios for all possible transitions within the lowest-lying four electronic states have also been calculated. Meanwhile, the mixing between metastable A'2Δ and A2Π states and further the lifetime of the Δ state have been estimated since the loss procedure via Δ state would like fatally destroy the main quasi-cycling Σ-Π transition for cooling and trapping. The resultant hyperfine splittings of eac…
We report lifetime measurements of the 6 levels in the 3d6(5D)4d e6G term in Fe ii at an energy of 10.4 eV, and f -values for 14 transitions from the investigated levels. The lifetimes were measured using time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence on ions in a laser-produced plasma. The high excitation energy, and the fact that the levels have the same parity as the the low-lying states directly populated in the plasma, necessitated the use of a two-photon excitation scheme. The probability for this process is greatly enhanced by the presence of the 3d6(5D)4p z6F levels at roughly half the energ…
We report the first experimental determination of the $4s \ ^{2}S_{1/2} $ $\leftrightarrow $ $3d \ ^{2}D_{5/2}$ quadrupole transition matrix element in $^{40}$Ca$^+$ by measuring the branching ratio of the $3d \ ^{2}D_{5/2} $ state decaying into the ground state $4s \ ^{2}S_{1/2} $ and the lifetime of the $3d \ ^{2}D_{5/2} $ state, using a technique of highly synchronized measurement sequence for laser control and highly efficient quantum state detection for quantum jumps. The measured branching ratio and improved lifetime are, respectively, 0.9992(80) and 1.1652(46) s, which yield the value o…
We report lifetimes, branching fractions, and the resulting oscillator strengths for transitions within the P II multiplet (3s23p2 3P - 3s3p3 3Po) at 1308 Å. These comprehensive beam-foil measurements, which are the most precise set currently available experimentally, resolve discrepancies involving earlier experimental and theoretical results. Interstellar phosphorus abundances derived from λ1308 can now be interpreted with greater confidence. In the course of our measurements, we also obtained an experimental lifetime for the 3p4s 3P0o level of P IV. This lifetime agrees well with the availa…
Transition properties such as oscillator strengths, transition rates, branching ratios and lifetimes of many low-lying states in the doubly ionized scandium (Sc III) are reported. A relativistic method in the coupled-cluster framework has been employed to incorporate the electron correlation effects due to the Coulomb interaction to all orders by considering all possible singly and doubly excited electronic configurations conjointly with the leading order triply excited configurations in a perturbative approach. Present results are compared with the previously reported results for the transiti…
The fully relativistic multiconfiguration Dirac--Hartree--Fock method is used to compute excitation energies and lifetimes for the 143 lowest states of the $3s^23p^3$, $3s3p^4$, $3s^23p^23d$, $3s3p^33d$, $3p^5$, $3s^23p3d^2$ configurations in P-like ions from Cr X to Zn XVI. Multipole (E1, M1, E2, M2) transition rates, line strengths, oscillator strengths, and branching fractions among these states are also given. Valence-valence and core-valence electron correlation effects are systematically accounted for using large basis function expansions. Computed excitation energies are compared with t…
First laser cooling and trapping of the heavy alkaline earth element barium has been achieved based on the strong 6s$^2$ $^1$S$_0$ - 6s6p $^1$P$_1$ transition for the main cooling. Due to the large branching into metastable D-states several additional laser driven transitions are required to provide a closed cooling cycle. A total efficiency of $0.4(1) \cdot 10^{-2}$ for slowing a thermal atomic beam and capturing atoms into a magneto optical trap was obtained. Trapping lifetimes of more than 1.5 s were observed. This lifetime is shortened at high laser intensities by photo ionization losses. …
We study the branching ratios of the allowed and forbidden radiative transitions among the first few (9) fine structure levels of O VI using relativistic coupled cluster theory. We find irregular patterns for a number of transitions with in $n$-complexes with $n\le4$. We have used the exisiting values of the allowed electric dipole ($E1$) transition as a benchmark of our theory. Good agreement with the existing values establish accuracies of not only the theoretical method but the basis function as well. In general the electric quadrupole ($E2$) transition probabilities are greater in magnitud…
