For the symmetric simple exclusion process on an infinite line, we calculate exactly the fluctuations of the integrated current $Q_t$ during time $t$ through the origin when, in the initial condition, the sites are occupied with density $ρ_a$ on the negative axis and with density $ρ_b$ on the positive axis. All the cumulants of $Q_t$ grow like $\sqrt{t}$. In the range where $Q_t \sim \sqrt{t}$, the decay $\exp [-Q_t^3/t]$ of the distribution of $Q_t$ is non-Gaussian. Our results are obtained using the Bethe ansatz and several identities recently derived by Tracy and Widom for exclusion processes on the infinite line.
The studies of fluctuations of the one-dimensional Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class using the techniques from random matrix theory are reviewed from the point of view of the asymmetric simple exclusion process. We explain the basics of random matrix techniques, the connections to the polynuclear growth models and a method using the Green's function.
We verify the finite time fluctuation theorem for a linear Ising chain at its ends in contact with heat reservoirs. Analytic results are derived for a chain consisting of only two spins. The system can be mapped onto a model for particle transport, namely the symmetric exclusion process, in contact with thermal and particle reservoirs. We modify the symmetric exclusion process to represent a thermal engine and reproduce universal features of the efficiency at maximum power.
We introduce a meta-population version of models of asymmetric exclusion models, consisting of a spatial arrangement of patches. Patches are of a specific size, indicating the maximal number of particles they can hold. We use an expansion in the inverse patch size to calculate the spectral properties of fluctuations in such systems. This provides a systematic derivation from first principles of effective Langevin descriptions discussed in the literature. We apply our approach to the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process, to variants with an overall constraint on the total particle number…
We conjecture an exact expression for the large deviation function of the stationary state current in the partially asymmetric exclusion process with periodic boundary conditions. This expression is checked for small systems using functional Bethe Ansatz. It generalizes a previous result by Derrida and Lebowitz for the totally asymmetric exclusion process, and gives the known values for the three first cumulants of the current in the partially asymmetric model. Our result is written in terms of tree structures and provides a new example of a link between integrable models and combinatorics.
The symmetric simple exclusion process is one of the simplest out-of-equilibrium systems for which the steady state is known. Its large deviation functional of the density has been computed in the past both by microscopic and macroscopic approaches. Here we obtain the leading finite size correction to this large deviation functional. The result is compared to the similar corrections for equilibrium systems.
We investigate the nature of the dynamically inactive phase of a simple symmetric exclusion process on a ring. We find that as the system's activity is tuned to a lower-than-average value the particles progressively lump into a single cluster, thereby forming a kink in the density profile. All dynamical regimes, and their finite size range of validity, are explicitly determined.
We study the fluctuations of the current J(t) of the totally asymmetric exclusion process with open boundaries. Using a density matrix renormalization group approach, we calculate the cumulant generating function of the current. This function can be interpreted as a free energy for an ensemble in which histories are weighted by exp(-sJ(t)). We show that in this ensemble the model has a first order space-time phase transition at s=0. We numerically determine the finite size scaling of the cumulant generating function near this phase transition, both in the non-equilibrium steady state and for l…
We use the Bethe Ansatz to derive analytical expressions for the current statistics in the asymmetric exclusion process with both forward and backward jumps. The Bethe equations are highly coupled and this fact has impeded their use to derive exact results for finite systems. We overcome this technical difficulty by a reformulation of the Bethe equations into a one variable polynomial problem, akin to the functional Bethe Ansatz. The perturbative solution of this equation leads to the cumulants of the current. We calculate here the first two orders and derive exact formulae for the mean value …
We consider steady-state current activity statistics for the one-dimensional totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP). With the help of the known operator algebra (for general open boundary conditions), as well as general probabilistic concepts (for the periodic case), we derive and evaluate closed-form expressions for the lowest three moments of the probability distribution function. These are confirmed, to excellent degree of accuracy, by numerical simulations. Further exact expressions and asymptotic approximations are provided for probability distributions and generating functio…
We prove the nonequilibrium fluctuations of one-dimensional, boundary driven, weakly asymmetric exclusion processes through a microscopic Cole-Hopf transformation.
We study symmetric simple exclusion processes (SSEP) on a ring in the presence of uniformly moving multiple defects or disorders - a generalization of the model proposed earlier [Phys. Rev. E 89, 022138 (2014)]. The defects move with uniform velocity and change the particle hopping rates locally. We explore the collective effects of the defects on the spatial structure and transport properties of the system. We also introduce an SSEP with ordered sequential (sitewise) update and elucidate the close connection with our model.
We investigate the growth of the total number of particles in a symmetric exclusion process driven by a localized source. The average total number of particles entering an initially empty system grows with time as t^{1/2} in one dimension, t/log(t) in two dimensions, and linearly in higher dimensions. In one and two dimensions, the leading asymptotic behaviors for the average total number of particles are independent on the intensity of the source. We also discuss fluctuations of the total number of particles and determine the asymptotic growth of the variance in one dimension.
We show that the fluctuations of the partial current in two dimensional diffusive systems are dominated by vortices leading to a different scaling from the one predicted by the hydrodynamic large deviation theory. This is supported by exact computations of the variance of partial current fluctuations for the symmetric simple exclusion process on general graphs. On a two-dimensional torus, our exact expressions are compared to the results of numerical simulations. They confirm the logarithmic dependence on the system size of the fluctuations of the partialflux. The impact of the vortices on the…
The dynamics of an asymmetric tracer in the symmetric simple exclusion process (SEP) is mapped, in the continuous scaling limit, to the local current through the origin in the zero-range process (ZRP) with a biased bond. This allows us to study the hydrodynamics of the SEP with an asymmetric tracer with a step initial condition, leading to the average displacement as a function of the bias and the densities on both sides. We then derive the cumulant generating function of the process in the high-density limit, by using the Macroscopic Fluctuation Theory and obtain agreement with the microscopi…
We revisit a totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) with open boundaries and a global constraint on the total number of particles [Adams, et. al. 2008 J. Stat. Mech. P06009]. In this model, the entry rate of particles into the lattice depends on the number available in the reservoir. Thus, the total occupation on the lattice feeds back into its filling process. Although a simple domain wall theory provided reasonably good predictions for Monte Carlo simulation results for certain quantities, it did not account for the fluctuations of this feedback. We generalize the previous study…
We study the fluctuation properties of the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) on an infinite one-dimensional lattice. When $N$ particles are initially situated in the negative region with a uniform density $ρ_-=1$, Johansson showed the equivalence of the current fluctuation of ASEP and the largest eigenvalue distribution of random matrices. We extend Johansson's formula and derive modified ensembles of random matrices, corresponding to general ASEP initial conditions. Taking the scaling limit, we find that a phase change of the asymptotic current fluctuation occurs at a critical positi…
We investigate the role of the boundary in the symmetric simple exclusion process with competing nonlocal and local hopping events. With open boundaries, the system undergoes a first order phase transition from a finite density phase to an empty road phase as the nonlocal hopping rate increases. Using a cluster stability analysis, we determine the location of such an abrupt nonequilibrium phase transition, which agrees well with numerical results. Our cluster analysis provides a physical insight into the mechanism behind this transition. We also explain why the transition becomes discontinuous…
We consider fluctuations of steady-state current activity, and of its dynamic counterpart, the local current, for the one-dimensional totally asymmetric simple exclusion process. The cumulants of the integrated activity behave similarly to those of the local current, except that they do not capture the anomalous scaling behavior in the maximal-current phase and at its boundaries. This indicates that the systemwide sampling at equal times, characteristic of the instantaneous activity, overshadows the subtler effects which come about from non-equal time correlations, and are responsible for anom…
The Symmetric Exclusion Process (SEP), in which particles hop symmetrically on a discrete line with hard-core constraints, is a paradigmatic model of subdiffusion in confined systems. This anomalous behavior is a direct consequence of strong spatial correlations induced by the requirement that the particles cannot overtake each other. Even if this fact has been recognised qualitatively for a long time, up to now there is no full quantitative determination of these correlations. Here we study the joint probability distribution of an arbitrary number of tagged particles in the SEP. We determine …
We prove nonequilibrium fluctuations for the boundary driven symmetric simple exclusion process. We deduce from this result the stationary fluctuations.
The Symmetric Exclusion Process (SEP), where particles hop on a 1D lattice with the restriction that there can only be one particle per site, is a paradigmatic model of interacting particle systems. Recently, it has been shown that the nature of the initial conditions - annealed or quenched - has a quantitative impact on the long-time properties of tracer diffusion. However, so far, all the studies in the quenched case focused on the low-density limit of the SEP. Here, we derive the cumulant generating function of the tracer position in the dense limit with quenched initial conditions. Importa…
In the boundary driven symmetric simple exclusion process consider an open set $\ms O$ of density profiles which does not contain the stationary density profile. We prove that the first time the empirical measure visits the set $\ms O$ converges to an exponential distribution.
A class of generalized exclusion processes parametrized by the maximal occupancy, $k\geq 1$, is investigated. For these processes with symmetric nearest-neighbor hopping, we compute the diffusion coefficient and show that it is independent on the spatial dimension. In the extreme cases of $k=1$ (simple symmetric exclusion process) and $k=\infty$ (non-interacting symmetric random walks) the diffusion coefficient is constant; for $2\leq k<\infty$, the diffusion coefficient depends on the density and the maximal occupancy $k$. We also study the evolution of a tagged particle. It exhibits a diffus…
We examine the entropy of stationary nonequilibrium measures of boundary driven symmetric simple exclusion processes. In contrast with the Gibbs--Shannon entropy \cite{B, DLS2}, the entropy of nonequilibrium stationary states differs from the entropy of local equilibrium states.
We investigate the total asymmetric exclusion process by analyzing the dynamics of the shock. Within this approach we are able to calculate the fluctuations of the number of particles and density profiles not only in the stationary state but also in the transient regime. We find that the analytical predictions and the simulation results are in excellent agreement.
In this article, we consider a one-dimensional symmetric exclusion process in weak contact with reservoirs at the boundary. In the diffusive time-scaling the empirical measure evolves according to the heat equation with Robin boundary conditions. We prove the associated dynamical large deviations principle.
In a recent study, (Jain et al 2007 Phys. Rev. Lett. 99 190601), a symmetric exclusion process with time-dependent hopping rates was introduced. Using simulations and a perturbation theory, it was shown that if the hopping rates at two neighboring sites of a closed ring vary periodically in time and have a relative phase difference, there is a net DC current which decreases inversely with the system size. In this work, we simplify and generalize our earlier treatment. We study a model where hopping rates at all sites vary periodically in time, and show that for certain choices of relative phas…
The large deviation properties of equilibrium (reversible) lattice gases are mathematically reasonably well understood. Much less is known in non--equilibrium, namely for non reversible systems. In this paper we consider a simple example of a non--equilibrium situation, the symmetric simple exclusion process in which we let the system exchange particles with the boundaries at two different rates. We prove a dynamical large deviation principle for the empirical density which describes the probability of fluctuations from the solutions of the hydrodynamic equation. The so called quasi potential,…
We study the asymmetric exclusion process with open boundaries and derive the exact form of the joint probability function for the occupation number and the current through the system. We further consider the thermodynamic limit, showing that the resulting distribution is non-Gaussian and that the density fluctuations have a discontinuity at the continuous phase transition, while the current fluctuations are continuous. The derivations are performed by using the standard operator algebraic approach, and by the introduction of new operators satisfying a modified version of the original algebra.
We show, using the macroscopic fluctuation theory of Bertini, De Sole, Gabrielli, Jona-Lasinio, and Landim, that the statistics of the current of the symmetric simple exclusion process (SSEP) connected to two reservoirs are the same on an arbitrary large finite domain in dimension $d$ as in the one dimensional case. Numerical results on squares support this claim while results on cubes exhibit some discrepancy. We argue that the results of the macroscopic fluctuation theory should be recovered by increasing the size of the contacts. The generalization to other diffusive systems is straightforw…
We develop the hydrodynamic theory for number conserving asymmetric exclusion processes with short-range random quenched disordered hopping rates, which is one-dimensional Kardar-Parisi- Zhang (KPZ) equation with quenched columnar disorder. We show that when the system is away from half-filling, the universal spatio-temporal scaling of the density fluctuations is indistinguishable from its pure counterpart, with the model belonging to the one-dimensional Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class. In contrast, close to half-filling, the quenched disorder is relevant, leading to a new universality …
The time-integrated current of the TASEP has non-Gaussian fluctuations of order $t^{1/3}$. The recently discovered connection to random matrices and the Painlevé II Riemann-Hilbert problem provides a technique through which we obtain the probability distribution of the current fluctuations, in particular their dependence on initial conditions, and the stationary two-point function. Some open problems are explained.
We consider the asymmetric simple exclusion process on a ring, with an arbitrary asymmetry between the hopping rates of the particles. Using a functional formulation of the Bethe equations of the model, we derive exact expressions for all the cumulants of the current in the stationary state. These expressions involve tree structures with composite nodes. In the thermodynamic limit, three regimes can be observed for the current fluctuations depending on how the asymmetry scales with the size of the system.
Tracer dynamics in the Symmetric Exclusion Process, where hardcore particles diffuse on an infinite one-dimensional lattice, is a paradigmatic model of anomalous diffusion. While the equilibrium situation has received a lot of attention, the case where the tracer is driven by an external force, which provides a minimal model of nonequilibrium transport in confined crowded environments, remains largely unexplored. Indeed, the only available analytical results concern the means of both the position of the tracer and the lattice occupation numbers in its frame of reference, and higher-order momen…
We consider single-file diffusion in an open system with two species $A,B$ of particles. At the boundaries we assume different reservoir densities which drive the system into a non-equilibrium steady state. As a model we use an one-dimensional two-component simple symmetric exclusion process with two different hopping rates $D_A,D_B$ and open boundaries. For investigating the dynamics in the hydrodynamic limit we derive a system of coupled non-linear diffusion equations for the coarse-grained particle densities. The relaxation of the initial density profile is analyzed by numerical integration…
We introduce a two-dimensional, distribution-valued field which we call the quadratic field associated to the one-dimensional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. We show that the stationary quadratic fluctuations of the simple exclusion process, when rescaled in the diffusive scaling, converge to this quadratic field. We show that this quadratic field evaluated at the diagonal corresponds to the Wick-renormalized square of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process, and we use this new representation in order to prove some small and large-time properties of it.
We use the macroscopic fluctuation theory (MFT) to evaluate the probability distribution P of extreme values of integrated current J at a specified time t=T in the symmetric simple exclusion process (SSEP) on an infinite line. As shown recently [Phys. Rev. E 89, 010101(R) (2014)], the SSEP belongs to the elliptic universality class. Here, for very large currents, the diffusion terms of the MFT equations can be neglected compared with the terms coming from the shot noise. Using the hodograph transformation and an additional change of variables, we reduce the "inviscid" MFT equations to Laplace'…
The fluctuations of the current for the one-dimensional totally asymmetric exclusion process with $L$ sites are studied in the relaxation regime of times $T\sim L^{3/2}$. Using Bethe ansatz for the periodic system with an evolution conditioned on special initial and final states, the Fourier transform of the probability distribution of the fluctuations is calculated exactly in the thermodynamic limit $L\to\infty$ with finite density of particles. It is found to be equal to a sum over discrete realizations of a scalar field in a linear potential with coupling constant equal to the rescaled time…
A system consisting of two parallel coupled channels where particles in one of them follow the rules of totally asymmetric exclusion processes (TASEP) and in another one move as in symmetric simple exclusion processes (SSEP) is investigated theoretically. Particles interact with each other via hard-core exclusion potential, and in the asymmetric channel they can only hop in one direction, while on the symmetric lattice particles jump in both directions with equal probabilities. Inter-channel transitions are also allowed at every site of both lattices. Stationary state properties of the system …
Considering the large deviations of activity and current in the Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process (ASEP), we show that there exists a non-trivial correspondence between the joint scaled cumulant generating functions of activity and current of two ASEPs with different parameters. This mapping is obtained by applying a similarity transform on the deformed Markov matrix of the source model in order to obtain the deformed Markov matrix of the target model. We first derive this correspondence for periodic boundary conditions, and show in the diffusive scaling limit (corresponding to the Weakly As…
We obtain the exact large deviation functions of the density profile and of the current, in the non-equilibrium steady state of a one dimensional symmetric simple exclusion process coupled to boundary reservoirs with slow rates. Compared to earlier results, where rates at the boundaries are comparable to the bulk ones, we show how macroscopic fluctuations are modified when the boundary rates are slower by an order of inverse of the system length.
We examine the asymmetric simple exclusion process with open boundaries, a paradigm of driven diffusive systems, having a nonequilibrium steady state transition. We provide a full derivation and expanded discussion and digression on results previously reported briefly in M. Depken and R. Stinchcombe, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 93}, 040602, (2004). In particular we derive an exact form for the joint probability function for the bulk density and current, both for finite systems, and also in the thermodynamic limit. The resulting distribution is non-Gaussian, and while the fluctuations in the current …
We use kinetic Monte Carlo simulations to investigate current fluctuations in boundary driven generalized exclusion processes, in different dimensions. Simulation results are in full agreement with predictions based on the additivity principle and the macroscopic fluctuation theory. The current statistics are independent of the shape of the contacts with the reservoirs, provided they are macroscopic in size. In general, the current distribution depends on the spatial dimension. For the special cases of the symmetric simple exclusion process and the zero-range process, the current statistics ar…
We present the first exact solution for the time dependent equations of the macroscopic fluctuation theory (MFT) for the symmetric simple exclusion process by combining a generalization of the canonical Cole-Hopf transformation with the inverse scattering method. For the step initial condition with two densities, the associated Riemann-Hilbert problem is solved to determine exactly the optimal density profile and the response field which produce a required fluctuation, both at initial and final times. The large deviation function of the current is derived and coincides with the formula obtaine…
We study the behaviour of a Symmetric Exclusion Process (SEP) in presence of stochastic resetting where the configuration of the system is reset to a step-like profile with a fixed rate $r.$ We show that the presence of resetting affects both the stationary and dynamical properties of SEP strongly. We compute the exact time-dependent density profile and show that the stationary state is characterized by a non-trivial inhomogeneous profile in contrast to the flat one for $r=0.$ We also show that for $r>0$ the average diffusive current grows linearly with time $t,$ in stark contrast to the $\sqr…
I show that cooperative exclusion processes with selective kinetic constraints exhibit fluctuation-induced forces that can be attractive or repulsive, depending on the density of boundary reservoirs, when their density-dependent diffusion coefficient exhibits a minimum. A mean-field analysis based on a nonlinear diffusion equation provides an estimation of the magnitude and sign of such a tunable Casimir-like force and suggests its occurrence in interacting particle systems with a diffusivity anomaly.
We study the fluctuations of the total current for the partially asymmetric exclusion process in the scaling of a weak asymmetry (asymmetry of order the inverse of the size of the system) using Bethe Ansatz. Starting from the functional formulation of the Bethe equations, we obtain for all the cumulants of the current both the leading and next-to-leading contribution in the size of the system.
Consider the symmetric exclusion process evolving on an interval and weakly interacting at the end-points with reservoirs. Denote by $I_{[0,T]} (\cdot)$ its dynamical large deviations functional and by $V(\cdot)$ the associated quasi-potential, defined as $V(γ) = \inf_{T>0} \inf_u I_{[0,T]} (u)$, where the infimum is carried over all trajectories $u$ such that $u(0) = \barρ$, $u(T) = γ$, and $\barρ$ is the stationary density profile. We derive the partial differential equation which describes the evolution of the optimal trajectory, and deduce from this result the formula obtained by Derrida, …
We investigate the delocalization transition appearing in an exclusion process with two internal states resp. on two parallel lanes. At the transition, delocalized domain walls form in the density profiles of both internal states, in agreement with a mean-field approach. Remarkably, the topology of the system's phase diagram allows for the delocalization of a (localized) domain wall when approaching the transition. We quantify the domain wall's delocalization close to the transition by analytic results obtained within the framework of the domain wall picture. Power-law dependences of the domai…
We use functional Bethe Ansatz equations to calculate the cumulants of the total current in the partially asymmetric exclusion process. We recover known formulas for the first two cumulants (mean value of the current and diffusion constant) and obtain an explicit finite size formula for the third cumulant. The expression for the third cumulant takes a simple integral form in the limit where the asymmetry scales as the inverse of the square root of the size of the system, which corresponds to a natural separation between weak and strong asymmetry.
We study the dynamics of symmetric exclusion process (SEP) in the presence of stochastic resetting to two possible specific configurations -- with rate $r_1$ (respectively, $r_2$) the system is reset to a step-like configuration where all the particles are clustered in the left (respectively, right) half of the system. We show that this dichotomous resetting leads to a range of rich behaviour, both dynamical and in the stationary state. We calculate the exact stationary profile in the presence of this dichotomous resetting and show that the diffusive current grows linearly in time, but unlike …
We obtain the large deviation functional of a density profile for the asymmetric exclusion process of L sites with open boundary conditions when the asymmetry scales like 1/L. We recover as limiting cases the expressions derived recently for the symmetric (SSEP) and the asymmetric (ASEP) cases. In the ASEP limit, the non linear differential equation one needs to solve can be analysed by a method which resembles the WKB method.
For the two-sided Bernoulli initial condition with density $ρ_-$ (resp. $ρ_+$) to the left (resp. to the right), we study the distribution of a tagged particle in the one dimensional symmetric simple exclusion process. We obtain a formula for the moment generating function of the associated current in terms of a Fredholm determinant. Our arguments are based on a combination of techniques from integrable probability which have been developed recently for studying the asymmetric exclusion process and a subsequent intricate symmetric limit. An expression for the large deviation function of the ta…
