Considering the large deviations of activity and current in the Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process (ASEP), we show that there exists a non-trivial correspondence between the joint scaled cumulant generating functions of activity and current of two ASEPs with different parameters. This mapping is obtained by applying a similarity transform on the deformed Markov matrix of the source model in order to obtain the deformed Markov matrix of the target model. We first derive this correspondence for periodic boundary conditions, and show in the diffusive scaling limit (corresponding to the Weakly Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Processes, or WASEP) how the mapping is expressed in the language of Macroscopic Fluctuation Theory (MFT). As an interesting specific case, we map the large deviations of current in the ASEP to the large deviations of activity in the SSEP, thereby uncovering a regime of Kardar-Parisi-Zhang in the distribution of activity in the SSEP. At large activity, particle configurations exhibit hyperuniformity [Jack et al., PRL 114 060601 (2015)]. Using results from quantum spin chain theory, we characterize the hyperuniform regime by evaluating the small wavenumber asymptotic behavior of the structure factor at half-filling. Conversely, we formulate from the MFT results a conjecture for a correlation function in spin chains at any fixed total magnetization (in the thermodynamic limit). In addition, we generalize the mapping to the case of two open ASEPs with boundary reservoirs, and we apply it in the WASEP limit in the MFT formalism. This mapping also allows us to find a symmetry-breaking dynamical phase transition (DPT) in the WASEP conditioned by activity, from the prior knowledge of a DPT in the WASEP conditioned by the current.
We consider steady-state current activity statistics for the one-dimensional totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP). With the help of the known operator algebra (for general open boundary conditions), as well as general probabilistic concepts (for the periodic case), we derive and evaluate closed-form expressions for the lowest three moments of the probability distribution function. These are confirmed, to excellent degree of accuracy, by numerical simulations. Further exact expressions and asymptotic approximations are provided for probability distributions and generating functio…
We consider fluctuations of steady-state current activity, and of its dynamic counterpart, the local current, for the one-dimensional totally asymmetric simple exclusion process. The cumulants of the integrated activity behave similarly to those of the local current, except that they do not capture the anomalous scaling behavior in the maximal-current phase and at its boundaries. This indicates that the systemwide sampling at equal times, characteristic of the instantaneous activity, overshadows the subtler effects which come about from non-equal time correlations, and are responsible for anom…
We review various combinatorial interpretations and mappings of stationary-state probabilities of the totally asymmetric, partially asymmetric and symmetric simple exclusion processes (TASEP, PASEP, SSEP respectively). In these steady states, the statistical weight of a configuration is determined from a matrix product, which can be written explicitly in terms of generalised ladder operators. This lends a natural association to the enumeration of random walks with certain properties. Specifically, there is a one-to-many mapping of steady-state configurations to a larger state space of discrete…
We study the dynamical large deviations of the classical stochastic symmetric simple exclusion process (SSEP) by means of numerical matrix product states. We show that for half-filling, long-time trajectories with a large enough imbalance between the number hops in even and odd bonds of the lattice belong to distinct symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases. Using tensor network techniques, we obtain the large deviation (LD) phase diagram in terms of counting fields conjugate to the dynamical activity and the total hop imbalance. We show the existence of high activity trivial and non-trivia…
We provide two complementary approaches to the treatment of disorder in a fundamental nonequilibrium model, the asymmetric simple exclusion process. Firstly, a mean-field steady state mapping is generalized to the disordered case, where it provides a mapping of probability distributions and demonstrates how disorder results in a new flat regime in the steady state current--density plot for periodic boundary conditions. This effect was earlier observed by Tripathy and Barma but we provide treatment for more general distributions of disorder, including both numerical results and analytic express…
We show that in the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) on a ring, conditioned on carrying a large flux, the particle experience an effective long-range potential which in the limit of very large flux takes the simple form $U= -2\sum_{i\neq j}\log|\sinπ(n_{i}/L-n_{j}/L)|$, where $n_{1}% n_{2},\ldots n_{N}$ are the particle positions, similar to the effective potential between the eigenvalues of the circular unitary ensemble in random matrices. Effective hopping rates and various quasistationary probabilities under such a conditioning are found analytically using the Bethe ansatz and det…
An exact mapping is established between sequence alignment, one of the most commonly used tools of computational biology, and the asymmetric exclusion process, one of the few exactly solvable models of nonequilibrium physics. The statistical significance of sequence alignments is characterized through studying the total hopping current of the discrete time and space version of the asymmetric exclusion process.
Cumulants of a fluctuating current can be obtained from a free energy-like generating function which for Markov processes equals the largest eigenvalue of a generalized generator. We determine this eigenvalue with the DMRG for stochastic systems. We calculate the variance of the current in the different phases, and at the phase transitions, of the totally asymmetric exclusion process. Our results can be described in the terms of a scaling ansatz that involves the dynamical exponent z. We also calculate the generating function of the activity near the absorbing state transition of the contact p…
Because of disorder the current-field characteristic may show a first order phase transition as function of the field, at which the current jumps to zero when the driving exceeds a threshold. The discontinuity is caused by adding a finite correlation length in the disorder. At the same time the current may resurrect when the field is modulated in time, also discontinuously: a little shaking enables the current to jump up. Finally, in trapping models exclusion between particles postpones or even avoids the current from dying, while attraction may enhance it. We present simple models that illust…
We investigate the dynamic relaxation of random walks on temporal networks by focusing in the recently proposed activity driven model [Perra \textit{et al.} Sci. Rep. srep00469 (2012)]. For realistic activity distributions with a power-law form, we observe the presence of a very slow relaxation dynamics compatible with aging effects. A theoretical description of this processes in achieved by means of a mapping to Bouchaud's trap model. The mapping highlights the profound difference in the dynamics of the random walks according to the value of the exponent $γ$ in the activity distribution.
Totally asymmetric simple exclusion processes, consisting of two coupled parallel lattice chains with particles interacting with hard-core exclusion and moving along the channels and between them, are considered. In the limit of strong coupling between the channels, the particle currents, density profiles and a phase diagram are calculated exactly by mapping the system into an effective one-channel totally asymmetric exclusion model. For intermediate couplings, a simple approximate theory, that describes the particle dynamics in vertical clusters of two corresponding parallel sites exactly and…
We calculate exactly the first cumulants of the integrated current and of the activity (which is the total number of changes of configurations) of the symmetric simple exclusion process (SSEP) on a ring with periodic boundary conditions. Our results indicate that for large system sizes the large deviation functions of the current and of the activity take a universal scaling form, with the same scaling function for both quantities. This scaling function can be understood either by an analysis of Bethe ansatz equations or in terms of a theory based on fluctuating hydrodynamics or on the macrosco…
We consider the asymmetric simple exclusion processes (ASEP) on a ring constrained to produce an atypically large flux, or an extreme activity. Using quantum free fermion techniques we find the time-dependent conditional transition probabilities and the exact dynamical structure factor under such conditioned dynamics. In the thermodynamic limit we obtain the explicit scaling form. This gives a direct proof that the dynamical exponent in the extreme current regime is $z=1$ rather than the KPZ exponent $z=3/2$ which characterizes the ASEP in the regime of typical currents. Some of our results ex…

We consider a system consisting of a planar random walk on a square lattice, submitted to stochastic elementary local deformations. Depending on the deformation transition rates, and specifically on a parameter $η$ which breaks the symmetry between the left and right orientation, the winding distribution of the walk is modified, and the system can be in three different phases: folded, stretched and glassy. An explicit mapping is found, leading to consider the system as a coupling of two exclusion processes. For all closed or periodic initial sample paths, a convenient scaling permits to show a…
An exclusion particle model is considered as a highly simplified model of a limit order market. Its price behavior reproduces the well known crossover from over-diffusion (Hurst exponent H>1/2) to diffusion (H=1/2) when the time horizon is increased, provided that orders are allowed to be canceled. For early times a mapping to the totally asymmetric exclusion process yields the exact result H=2/3 which is in good agreement with empirical data. The underlying universality class of the exclusion process suggests some robustness of the exponent with respect to changes in the trading rules. In the…
Systems with conserved currents driven by reservoirs at the boundaries offer an opportunity for a general analytic study that is unparalleled in more general out of equilibrium systems. The evolution of coarse-grained variables is governed by stochastic {\em hydrodynamic} equations in the limit of small noise.} As such it is amenable to a treatment formally equal to the semiclassical limit of quantum mechanics, which reduces the problem of finding the full distribution functions to the solution of a set of Hamiltonian equations. It is in general not possible to solve such equations explicitly,…
We study a simple transport model driven out of equilibrium by reservoirs at the boundaries, corresponding to the hydrodynamic limit of the symmetric simple exclusion process. We show that a nonlocal transformation of densities and currents maps the large deviations of the model into those of an open, isolated chain satisfying detailed balance, where rare fluctuations are the time reversals of relaxations. We argue that the existence of such a mapping is the immediate reason why it is possible for this model to obtain an explicit solution for the large-deviation function of densities through e…
For diffusive systems that can be described by fluctuating hydrodynamics and by the Macroscopic Fluctuation Theory of Bertini et al., the total current fluctuations display universal features when the system is closed and in equilibrium. When the system is taken out of equilibrium by a boundary-drive, current fluctuations, at least for a particular family of diffusive systems, display the same universal features as in equilibrium. To achieve this result, we exploit a mapping between the fluctuations in a boundary-driven nonequilibrium system and those in its equilibrium counterpart. Finally, w…
We study the temporal percolation properties of temporal networks by taking as a representative example the recently proposed activity driven network model [N. Perra et al., Sci. Rep. 2, 469 (2012)]. Building upon an analytical framework based on a mapping to hidden variables networks, we provide expressions for the percolation time marking the onset of a giant connected component in the integrated network. In particular, we consider both the generating function formalism, valid for degree uncorrelated networks, and the general case of networks with degree correlations. We discuss the differen…
We consider the dynamics of fluctuations in the quantum asymmetric simple exclusion process (Q-ASEP) with periodic boundary conditions. The Q-ASEP describes a chain of spinless fermions with random hoppings that are induced by a Markovian environment. We show that fluctuations of the fermionic degrees of freedom obey evolution equations of Lindblad type, and derive the corresponding Lindbladians. We identify the underlying algebraic structure by mapping them to non-Hermitian spin chains and demonstrate that the operator space fragments into exponentially many (in system size) sectors that are …
