We study the temporal percolation properties of temporal networks by taking as a representative example the recently proposed activity driven network model [N. Perra et al., Sci. Rep. 2, 469 (2012)]. Building upon an analytical framework based on a mapping to hidden variables networks, we provide expressions for the percolation time marking the onset of a giant connected component in the integrated network. In particular, we consider both the generating function formalism, valid for degree uncorrelated networks, and the general case of networks with degree correlations. We discuss the different limits of the two approach, indicating the parameter regions where the correlated threshold collapses onto the uncorrelated case. Our analytical prediction are confirmed by numerical simulations of the model. The temporal percolation concept can be fruitfully applied to study epidemic spreading on temporal networks. We show in particular how the susceptible-infected- removed model on an activity driven network can be mapped to the percolation problem up to a time given by the spreading rate of the epidemic process. This mapping allows to obtain addition information on this process, not available for previous approaches.
An important class of real-world networks have directed edges, and in addition, some rank ordering on the nodes, for instance the "popularity" of users in online social networks. Yet, nearly all research related to explosive percolation has been restricted to undirected networks. Furthermore, information on such rank ordered networks typically flows from higher ranked to lower ranked individuals, such as follower relations, replies and retweets on Twitter. Here we introduce a simple percolation process on an ordered, directed network where edges are added monotonically with respect to the rank…
We introduce a model for temporally disordered directed percolation in which the probability of spreading from a vertex $(t,x)$, where $t$ is the time and $x$ is the spatial coordinate, is independent of $x$ but depends on $t$. Using a very efficient algorithm we calculate low-density series for bond percolation on the directed square lattice. Analysis of the series yields estimates for the critical point $p_c$ and various critical exponents which are consistent with a continuous change of the critical parameters as the strength of the disorder is increased.
We study roughening interfaces with a constant slope that become self organized critical by a rule that is similar to that of invasion percolation. The transient and critical dynamical exponents show Galilean invariance. The activity along the interface exhibits non-trivial power law correlations in both space and time. The probability distribution of the activity pattern follows an algebraic relation.
A minimal model for self-organized critical percolation on directed graphs with activating and de-activating links is studied. Unlike classical self-organized criticality, the variables that determine criticality are separated from the dynamical variables of the system and evolve on a slower timescale, resulting in robust criticality. While activity of nodes percolates across the network, the network self-organizes through local adjustment of links according to the criterion that a link's adjacent nodes' average activities become similar. As a result, the network self-organizes to the percolat…
In this paper we study the properties of the Barabási model of queueing under the hypothesis that the number of tasks is steadily growing in time. We map this model exactly onto an Invasion Percolation dynamics on a Cayley tree. This allows to recover the correct waiting time distribution $P_W(τ)\sim τ^{-3/2}$ at the stationary state (as observed in different realistic data) and also to characterize it as a sequence of causally and geometrically connected bursts of activity. We also find that the approach to stationarity is very slow.
We present strong evidence that a coupled-map-lattice model for spatio-temporal intermittency belongs to the universality class of directed percolation when the updating rules are asynchronous, i.e. when only one randomly chosen site is evolved at each time step. In contrast, when the system is subjected to parallel updating, available numerical evidence suggests that it does not belong to this universality class and that it is not even universal. We argue that in the absence of periodic external forcing, the asynchronous rule is the more physical.
Recent experiments have shown that the spontaneous activity of young dissociated neuronal cultures can be described as a process of highly inhomogeneous nucleation and front propagation due to the localization of noise activity, i.e., noise focusing. However, the basic understanding of the mechanisms of noise build-up leading to the nucleation remain an open fundamental problem. Here we present a minimal dynamical model called stochastic quorum percolation that can account for the observed phenomena, while providing a robust theoretical framework. The model reproduces the first and second orde…

Motivated by multi-hop communication in unreliable wireless networks, we present a percolation theory for time-varying networks. We develop a renormalization group theory for a prototypical network on a regular grid, where individual links switch stochastically between active and inactive states. The question whether a given source node can communicate with a destination node along paths of active links is equivalent to a percolation problem. Our theory maps the temporal existence of multi-hop paths on an effective two-state Markov process. We show analytically how this Markov process converge…
In the last two decades, network science has blossomed and influenced various fields, such as statistical physics, computer science, biology and sociology, from the perspective of the heterogeneous interaction patterns of components composing the complex systems. As a paradigm for random and semi-random connectivity, percolation model plays a key role in the development of network science and its applications. On the one hand, the concepts and analytical methods, such as the emergence of the giant cluster, the finite-size scaling, and the mean-field method, which are intimately related to the …
We investigate the influence of correlated initial conditions on the temporal evolution of a (d+1)-dimensional critical directed percolation process. Generating initial states with correlations <s_i*s_{i+r}>~r^(sigma-d) we observe that the density of active sites in Monte-Carlo simulations evolves as rho(t)~t^kappa. The exponent kappa depends continuously on sigma and varies in the range -beta/nu_{||}<=kappa<=eta. Our numerical results are confirmed by an exact field-theoretical renormalization group calculation.
Recently, new results on percolation of interdependent networks have shown that the percolation transition can be first order. In this paper we show that, when considering antagonistic interactions between interacting networks, the percolation process might present a bistability of the equilibrium solution. To this end, we introduce antagonistic interactions for which the functionality, or activity, of a node in a network is incompatible with the functionality, of the linked nodes in the other interacting networks. In particular, we study the percolation transition in two interacting networks …
We investigate the dynamic relaxation of random walks on temporal networks by focusing in the recently proposed activity driven model [Perra \textit{et al.} Sci. Rep. srep00469 (2012)]. For realistic activity distributions with a power-law form, we observe the presence of a very slow relaxation dynamics compatible with aging effects. A theoretical description of this processes in achieved by means of a mapping to Bouchaud's trap model. The mapping highlights the profound difference in the dynamics of the random walks according to the value of the exponent $γ$ in the activity distribution.
In this paper we study the critical properties of the non-equilibrium phase transition of the Susceptible-Exposed-Infected model under the effects of long-range correlated time-varying environmental noise on the Bethe lattice. We show that temporal noise is perturbatively relevant changing the universality class from the (mean-field) dynamical percolation to the exotic infinite-noise universality class of the contact process model. Our analytical results are based on a mapping to the one-dimensional fractional Brownian motion with an absorbing wall and is confirmed by Monte Carlo simulations. …
We introduce a model for directed percolation with a long-range temporal diffusion, while the spatial diffusion is kept short ranged. In an interpretation of directed percolation as an epidemic process, this non-Markovian modification can be understood as incubation times, which are distributed accordingly to a Levy distribution. We argue that the best approach to find the effective action for this problem is through a generalization of the Cardy-Sugar method, adding the non-Markovian features into the geometrical properties of the lattice. We formulate a field theory for this problem and reno…
We propose dynamic scaling in temporal networks with heterogeneous activities and memory, and provide a comprehensive picture for the dynamic topologies of such networks, in terms of the modified activity-driven network model [H. Kim \textit{et al.}, Eur. Phys. J. B {\bf 88}, 315 (2015)]. Particularly, we focus on the interplay of the time resolution and memory in dynamic topologies. Through the random walk (RW) process, we investigate diffusion properties and topological changes as the time resolution increases. Our results with memory are compared to those of the memoryless case. Based on th…
Simulating percolation and critical phenomena of labelled species inside films composed of single-component linear homogeneous macromolecules using molecular Monte Carlo method in 3 dimensions, we study dependence of these conducting transition and critical phenomena upon both thermal movement, i.e. spontaneous mobility, and extra-molecular topological constraints of the molecules. Systems containing topological constraints and/or composed of immobile particles, e.g. lattice models and chemical gelation, were studied in conventional works on percolation. Coordinates of the randomly distributed…
The relation between spontaneous and stimulated global brain activity is a fundamental problem in the understanding of brain functions. This question is investigated both theoretically and experimentally within the context of nonequilibrium fluctuation-dissipation relations. We consider the stochastic coarse-grained Wilson-Cowan model in the linear noise approximation and compare analytical results to experimental data from magnetoencephalography (MEG) of human brain. The short time behavior of the autocorrelation function for spontaneous activity is characterized by a double-exponential decay…
Experimental and numerical results suggest that the brain can be viewed as a system acting close to a critical point, as confirmed by scale-free distributions of relevant quantities in a variety of different systems and models. Less attention has received the investigation of the temporal correlation functions in brain activity in different, healthy and pathological, conditions. Here we perform this analysis by means of a model with short and long-term plasticity which implements the novel feature of different recovery rates for excitatory and inhibitory neurons, found experimentally. We evide…
We present results of numerical and experimental investigation of the electric breakage of a cellular material in pulsed electric fields (PEF). The numerical model simulates the conductive properties of a cellular material by a two-dimensional array of biological cells. The application of an external field in the form of the idealised square pulse sequence with a pulse duration $t_{i}$, and a pulse repetition time $Δt$ is assumed. The simulation model includes the known mechanisms of temporal and spatial evolution of the conductive properties of different microstructural elements in a tissue. …
