Recent astrophysical observations have motivated novel theoretical models of the dark matter sector. A class of such models predicts the existence of GeV scale cosmic strings that communicate with the standard model sector by Aharonov-Bohm interactions with electrically charged particles. We discuss the cosmology of these "dark strings" and investigate possible observational signatures. More elaborate dark sector models are argued to contain hybrid topological defects that may also have observational signatures.
The nature of dark matter is one of the most pressing questions in particle physics. Yet all our present knowledge of the dark sector to date comes from its gravitational interactions with astrophysical systems. Moreover, astronomical results still have immense potential to constrain the particle properties of dark matter. We introduce a simple 2D parameter space which classifies models in terms of a particle physics interaction strength and a characteristic astrophysical scale on which new physics appears, in order to facilitate communication between the fields of particle physics and astrono…
One of the clear predictions of string theory is the presence of a dynamical scalar partner of the spin-2 graviton, known as the dilaton. This will violate the Einstein Equivalence Principle, leading to a plethora of possibly observable consequences which is a cosmological context include dynamical dark energy and spacetime variations of nature's fundamental constants. The runaway dilaton scenario of Damour, Piazza and Veneziano is a particularly interesting class of string theory inspired models which can in principle reconcile a massless dilaton with experimental data. Here we use the latest…
We study the conditions for the adiabatic resonant conversion of the cold dark matter (CDM) axions into photons in existence of the astrophysically sourced strong magnetic fields such as those in the neutron star magnetosphere. We demonstrate the possibility that the forthcoming radio telescopes such as the SKA (Square Kilometre Array) can probe those photon signals from the CDM axions.
Dark photons may kinetically mix with our photon and modify Maxwell's equations. We examine their impact on the Lorentz force acting on the plasma in astrophysical magnetospheres. Solving the relevant magnetohydrodynamic equations, we show that any dark photon effect is negligible. The existing bound on dark photons with a mass below $10^{-14}$ eV, coming from Pioneer 10 observations of Jupiter's magnetosphere, relies on such an effect and is thus unreliable. To rectify this, we use recent Juno analyses to isolate any dark photon-induced modification of the Jovian magnetic field and hence plac…
With the growing interest in indirect detection for dark matter signature, the thesis aims to investigate the signal originating from the self-annihilation of dark matter candidates. The methods for targeting the dark matter signal are two-fold, on one hand, we explore the gamma rays resulting from dark matter particles. On the other hand, we focus on complementary radio properties.
Exploring dark matter via observations of extreme astrophysical environments -- defined here as heavy compact objects such as white dwarfs, neutron stars, and black holes, as well as supernovae and compact object merger events -- has been a major field of growth since the last Snowmass process. Theoretical work has highlighted the utility of current and near-future observatories to constrain novel dark matter parameter space across the full mass range. This includes gravitational wave instruments and observatories spanning the electromagnetic spectrum, from radio to gamma-rays. While recent se…
We examine the cosmological and astrophysical signatures of a "dark baryon," a neutral fermion that mixes with the neutron. As the mixing is through a higher-dimensional operator at the quark level, production of the dark baryon at high energies is enhanced so that its abundance in the early universe may be significant. Treating its initial abundance as a free parameter, we derive new, powerful limits on the properties of the dark baryon. Primordial nucleosynthesis and the cosmic microwave background provide strong constraints due to the inter-conversion of neutrons to dark baryons through the…
The current understanding of dark matter comes largely from measurements of the total matter content in the universe, from the distribution of gravitating matter on very large scales, and from rotation curves and velocity dispersions on sub-galactic scales. However, small-scale structure may well hold the key to unlocking the particle physics of the still-mysterious 85% of matter in the universe. Novel small-scale astrophysical probes of new particles and dark matter will become possible with a large data volume of high-precision measurements enabled by next-generation gravitational-wave detec…
We explore the possibility that high energy astrophysical neutrinos can interact with the dark matter on their way to Earth. Keeping in mind that new physics might leave its signature at such energies, we have considered all possible topologies for effective interactions between neutrino and dark matter. Building models, that give rise to a significant flux suppression of astrophysical neutrinos at Earth, is rather difficult. We present a $Z^{\prime}$-mediated model in this context. Encompassing a large variety of models, a wide range of dark matter masses from $10^{-21}$ eV up to a TeV, this …
We investigate a novel technique for the astrophysical detection of axions or axion-like particles in the dark matter halo of the Milky Way based on stimulated decay of axions, which we call axion gegenschein emission. Photons from the brightest known radio sources with a frequency equal to half the axion mass stimulate axion decay while propagating through the dark matter halo, causing radio emission in a direction precisely opposite to the incoming photon in the axion rest-frame and creating a countersource for every radio source, with an image smoothed by the dark matter velocity dispersion…
We study the production of dark matter and dark radiation after reheating in string inflation models where the Calabi-Yau has a fibred structure and the visible sector lives on D3 branes. We show how the interplay between different physical constraints from inflation, reheating, supersymmetry breaking and dark radiation, leads to distinct predictions for the nature of dark matter.
The theoretical interpretation of dark matter (DM) experiments is hindered by uncertainties on the dark matter density and velocity distribution inside the Solar System. In order to quantify those uncertainties, we present a parameter that characterizes the deviation of the true velocity distribution from the standard Maxwell-Boltzmann form, and we then determine for different values of this parameter the most aggressive and most conservative limits on the dark matter scattering cross section with nuclei; uncertainties in the local dark matter density can be accounted for trivially. This allow…
We perform a combined likelihood analysis for the IceCube 6-year high-energy starting events (HESE) and 8-year throughgoing muon events above 10 TeV using a two-component neutrino flux model. The two-component flux can be motivated either from purely astrophysical sources or due to a beyond Standard Model contribution, such as decaying heavy dark matter. We find that the astrophysical plus dark matter interpretation is mildly preferred by the current data over the purely astrophysical explanation. As for the astrophysical neutrinos, we consider two different source flavor compositions correspo…
