Schein and Gallager introduced the Gaussian parallel relay channel in 2000. They proposed the Amplify-and-Forward (AF) and the Decode-and-Forward (DF) strategies for this channel. For a long time, the best known achievable rate for this channel was based on the AF and DF with time sharing (AF-DF). Recently, a Rematch-and-Forward (RF) scheme for the scenario in which different amounts of bandwidth can be assigned to the first and second hops were proposed.
In this paper, we propose a \emph{Combined Amplify-and-Decode Forward (CADF)} scheme for the Gaussian parallel relay channel. We prove that the CADF scheme always gives a better achievable rate compared to the RF scheme, when there is a bandwidth mismatch between the first hop and the second hop. Furthermore, for the equal bandwidth case (Schein's setup), we show that the time sharing between the CADF and the DF schemes (CADF-DF) leads to a better achievable rate compared to the time sharing between the RF and the DF schemes (RF-DF) as well as the AF-DF.
In this paper, achievable rates of imperfectly-known fading relay channels are studied. It is assumed that communication starts with the network training phase in which the receivers estimate the fading coefficients of their respective channels. In the data transmission phase, amplify-and-forward and decode-and-forward relaying schemes are considered, and the corresponding achievable rate expressions are obtained. The achievable rate expressions are then employed to identify the optimal resource allocation strategies.
In this paper, we consider a more general four-terminal memoryless relay-eavesdropper channel with state information (REC-SI) and derive an achievable perfect secrecy rate for it. We suppose that the state information is non-causally available at the transmitter and relay only. The transmitter wishes to establish a secure communication with the legitimate receiver by the help of a relay where a confidential message will be kept secret from a passive eavesdropper. We consider active cooperation between the relay and transmitter. The relay helps the transmitter by relaying the message using deco…
We consider a relay network with two relays and two feedback links from the relays to the sender. To obtain the achievability results, we use the compress-and-forward and the decode-and-forward strategies to superimpose facility and cooperation analogue to what proposed by Cover and El Gamal for a relay channel. In addition to random binning, we use deterministic binning to perform restricted decoding. We show how to use the feedback links for cooperation between the sender and the relays to transmit the information which is compressed in the sender and the relays.
We establish an achievable rate region for discrete memoryless interference relay channels that consist of two source-destination pairs and one or more relays. We develop an achievable scheme combining Han-Kobayashi and noisy network coding schemes. We apply our achievability to two cases. First, we characterize the capacity region of a class of discrete memoryless interference relay channels. This class naturally generalizes the injective deterministic discrete memoryless interference channel by El Gamal and Costa and the deterministic discrete memoryless relay channel with orthogonal receive…
Achievable rate regions for cooperative relay broadcast channels with rate-limited feedback are proposed. Specifically, we consider two-receiver memoryless broadcast channels where each receiver sends feedback signals to the transmitter through a noiseless and rate-limited feedback link, and meanwhile, acts as relay to transmit cooperative information to the other receiver. It's shown that the proposed rate regions improve on the known regions that consider either relaying cooperation or feedback communication, but not both.
We consider a relay network with two relays and a feedback link from the receiver to the sender. To obtain the achievability result, we use compress-and-forward and random binning techniques combined with deterministic binning and restricted decoding. Moreover, we use joint decoding technique to decode the relays' compressed information to achieve a higher rate in the receiver.
In this paper, achievable rates and optimal resource allocation strategies for imperfectly-known fading relay channels are studied. It is assumed that communication starts with the network training phase in which the receivers estimate the fading coefficients of their respective channels. In the data transmission phase, amplify-and-forward and decode-and-forward relaying schemes with different degrees of cooperation are considered, and the corresponding achievable rate expressions are obtained. Three resource allocation problems are addressed: 1) power allocation between data and training symb…
In the half-duplex single relay selection network, comprised of a source, $M$ half-duplex relays, and a destination, only one relay is active at any given time, i.e., only one relay receives or transmits, and the other relays are inactive, i.e., they do not receive nor transmit. The capacity of this network, when all links are affected by independent slow time-continuous fading and additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), is still unknown, and only achievable average rates have been reported in the literature so far. In this paper, we present new achievable average rates for this network which ar…
In this paper, we obtain a general achievable rate region and some certain capacity theorems for multiple-access relay channel (MARC), using decode and forward (DAF) strategy at the relay, superposition coding at the transmitters. Our general rate region (i) generalizes the achievability part of Slepian-Wolf multiple-access capacity theorem to the MARC, (ii) extends the Cover-El Gamal best achievable rate for the relay channel with DAF strategy to the MARC, (iii) gives the Kramer-Wijengaarden rate region for the MARC, (iv) meets max-flow min-cut upper bound and leads to the capacity regions of…
This paper elaborates on the achievable schemes of interference alignment in constant channels via finite amplify-and-forward (AF) relays. Consider $K$ sources communicating with $K$ destinations without direct links besides the relay connections. The total number of relays is finite. The objective is to achieve interference alignment for all user pairs to obtain half of their interference-free degrees of freedom. In general, two strategies are employed: coding at the edge and coding in the middle, in which relays show different roles. The contributions are that two fundamental and critical el…
In this paper, we derive UWB version of (i) general best achievable rate for the relay channel with decode-andforward strategy and (ii) max-flow min-cut upper bound, such that the UWB relay channel can be studied considering the obtained lower and upper bounds. Then, we show that by appropriately choosing the noise correlation coefficients, our new upper bound coincides with the lower bound in special cases of degraded and reversely degraded UWB relay channels. Finally, some numerical results are illustrated.
In a bi-directional relay channel, two nodes wish to exchange independent messages over a shared wireless half-duplex channel with the help of a relay. In this paper, we derive achievable rate regions for four new half-duplex protocols and compare these to four existing half-duplex protocols and outer bounds. In time, our protocols consist of either two or three phases. In the two phase protocols, both users simultaneously transmit during the first phase and the relay alone transmits during the second phase, while in the three phase protocol the two users sequentially transmit followed by a tr…
We propose an achievable rate-region for the two-way multiple-relay channel using decode-and-forward block Markovian coding. We identify a conflict between the information flow in both directions. This conflict leads to an intractable number of decode-forward schemes and achievable rate regions, none of which are universally better than the others. We introduce a new concept in decode-forward coding called ranking, and discover that there is an underlying structure to all of these rate regions expressed in the rank assignment. Through this discovery, we characterize the complete achievable rat…
We consider the wireless Rayleigh fading relay channel with finite complex input constellations. Assuming global knowledge of the channel state information and perfect synchronization, upper and lower bounds on the achievable rate, for the full-duplex relay, as well as the more practical half-duplex relay (in which the relay cannot transmit and receive simultaneously), are studied. Assuming the power constraint at the source node and the relay node to be equal, the gain in rate offered by the use of relay over the direct transmission (without the relay) is investigated. It is shown that for th…
In this paper, we study the degrees of freedom (DoF) of the MIMO relay networks. We start with a general Y channel, where each user has $M_i$ antennas and aims to exchange messages with the other two users via a relay equipped with $N$ antennas. Then, we extend our work to a general 4-user MIMO relay network. Unlike most previous work which focused on the total DoF of the network, our aim here is to characterize the achievable DoF region as well. We develop an outer bound on the DoF region based on the notion of one sided genie. Then, we define a new achievable region using the Signal Space Al…
The K-user flat fading MIMO interference channel with J instantaneous relays (KICJR) is considered. In the KICJR, the effective channel between sources and destinations including the relays has certain structure and is non-generic. For non-generic channels, the achievable degrees of freedom (DoF) is still unknown. Lee and Wang showed that by using the aligned interference neutralization scheme 3/2 degrees of freedom is achievable in a 2IC1R system, which is 50% more than the 2-user interference channel. But the DoF performance and achievable schemes for other KICJR networks are not investigate…
This paper studies Gaussian Two-Way Relay Channel where two communication nodes exchange messages with each other via a relay. It is assumed that all nodes operate in half duplex mode without any direct link between the communication nodes. A compress-and-forward relaying strategy using nested lattice codes is first proposed. Then, the proposed scheme is improved by performing a layered coding : a common layer is decoded by both receivers and a refinement layer is recovered only by the receiver which has the best channel conditions. The achievable rates of the new scheme are characterized and …
The two user Gaussian interference channel with a full-duplex relay is studied. By using genie aided approaches, two new upper bounds on the achievable sum-rate in this setup are derived. These upper bounds are shown to be tighter than previously known bounds under some conditions. Moreover, a transmit strategy for this setup is proposed. This strategy utilizes the following elements: Block Markov encoding combined with a Han-Kobayashi scheme at the sources, decode and forward at the relay, and Willems' backward decoding at the receivers. This scheme is shown to achieve within a finite gap our…
We consider the Gaussian interference channel with an intermediate relay as a main building block for cooperative interference networks. On the achievability side, we consider compress-and-forward based strategies. Specifically, a generalized compress-and-forward strategy, where the destinations jointly decode the compression indices and the source messages, is shown to improve upon the compress-and-forward strategy which sequentially decodes the compression indices and source messages, and the recently proposed generalized hash-and-forward strategy. We also construct a nested lattice code bas…
We study the problem of joint information and energy transfer in a binary two-hop channel with an energy harvesting relay. We consider a finite battery size at the relay and energy loss in transmitting energy. In other words, to be able to send an energy-contained symbol, the relay must receive multiple energy-contained symbols. Thus, we face a kind of channel with memory. We model the energy saved in the battery as the channel state with the challenge that the receiver does not know the channel state. We propose two different achievable schemes, the first one is based on state-dependent super…
We study a multihop "virtual" full-duplex relay channel as a special case of a general multiple multicast relay network. For such channel, quantize-map-and-forward (QMF) (or noisy network coding (NNC)) achieves the cut-set upper bound within a constant gap where the gap grows {\em linearly} with the number of relay stages $K$. However, this gap may not be negligible for the systems with multihop transmissions (i.e., a wireless backhaul operating at higher frequencies). We have recently attained an improved result to the capacity scaling where the gap grows {\em logarithmically} as $\log{K}$, b…
In this paper, transmission over time-selective, flat fading relay channels is studied. It is assumed that channel fading coefficients are not known a priori. Transmission takes place in two phases: network training phase and data transmission phase. In the training phase, pilot symbols are sent and the receivers employ single-pilot MMSE estimation or noncausal Wiener filter to learn the channel. Amplify-and-Forward (AF) and Decode-and-Forward (DF) techniques are considered in the data transmission phase and achievable rate expressions are obtained. The training period, and data and training p…
We consider a half-duplex diamond relay channel, which consists of one source-destination pair and two relay nodes connected with two-way rate-limited out-of-band conferencing links. Three basic schemes and their achievable rates are studied: For the decode-and-forward (DF) scheme, we obtain the achievable rate by letting the source send a common message and two private messages; for the compress-and-forward (CF) scheme, we exploit the conferencing links to help with the compression of the received signals, or to exchange messages intended for the second hop to introduce certain cooperation; f…
In this paper we consider the problem of full-duplex multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relaying between multi-antenna source and destination nodes. The principal difficulty in implementing such a system is that, due to the limited attenuation between the relay's transmit and receive antenna arrays, the relay's outgoing signal may overwhelm its limited-dynamic-range input circuitry, making it difficult---if not impossible---to recover the desired incoming signal. While explicitly modeling transmitter/receiver dynamic-range limitations and channel estimation error, we derive tight upper and …
We consider efficient communications over the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiway distributed relay channel (MDRC) with full data exchange, where each user, equipped with multiple antennas, broadcasts its message to all the other users via the help of a number of distributive relays. We propose a physical-layer network coding (PNC) based scheme involving linear precoding for channel alignment nested lattice coding for PNC, and lattice-based precoding for interference mitigation, We show that, with the proposed scheme, distributed relaying achieves the same sum-rate as cooperative re…
We consider a single-antenna Gaussian multiple-access channel (MAC) with a multiple-antenna amplify-and-forward (AF) relay, where, contrary to many previous works, also the direct links between transmitters and receiver are taken into account. For this channel, we investigate two transmit schemes: Sending and relaying all signals jointly or using a time-division multiple-access (TDMA) structure, where only one transmitter uses the channel at a time. While the optimal relaying matrices and time slot durations are found for the latter scheme, we provide upper and lower bounds on the achievable s…
This paper investigates the diversity order of the minimum mean squared error (MMSE) based optimal transceivers in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying systems. While the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) analysis accurately predicts the behavior of the MMSE receiver for the positive multiplexing gain, it turned out that the performance is very unpredictable via DMT for the case of fixed rates, because MMSE strategies exhibit a complicated rate dependent behavior. In this paper, we establish the diversity-rate tradeoff performance of MIMO AF relaying syst…
Virtual full-duplex (VFD) is a powerful solution to compensate the rate loss of half-duplex relaying without the need to full-duplex capable nodes. Inter-relay interference (IRI) challenges the operation of VFD relaying systems. Recently, improper signaling is employed at both relays of the VFD to mitigate the IRI by imposing the same signal characteristics for both relays. To further boost the achievable rate performance, asymmetric time sharing VFD relaying system is adopted with different improper signals at the half-duplex relays. The joint tuning of the three design parameters improves th…
The bidirectional relay channel, in which two users communicate with each other through a relay node, is a simple but fundamental and practical network architecture. In this paper, we consider the block fading bidirectional relay channel and propose efficient transmission strategies that exploit the block fading property of the channel. Thereby, we consider a decode-and-forward relay and assume that a direct link between the two users is not present. Our aim is to characterize the long-term achievable rate region and to develop protocols which achieve all points of the obtained rate region. Sp…
Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is a key to multiple access techniques for the next generation 5G wireless communication networks. In this paper, to improve the performance gain of NOMA system, a cooperative fixed decode-and-forward (DF) relay system model based on NOMA (CRS-NOMA) is studied over Rician fading channels, considering the achievable rate of signals as the performance metric. In this technique, by exploiting the concept of NOMA, unlike the conventional method of cooperative relaying, the second time slot is also utilized for the realization of information sent from the trans…
We analyze the achievable rate of the superposition of block Markov encoding (decode-and-forward) and side information encoding (compress-and-forward) for the three-node Gaussian relay channel. It is generally believed that the superposition can out perform decode-and-forward or compress-and-forward due to its generality. We prove that within the class of Gaussian distributions, this is not the case: the superposition scheme only achieves a rate that is equal to the maximum of the rates achieved by decode-and-forward or compress-and-forward individually. We also present a superposition scheme …
The average achievable rate of an Opportunistic Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (O-NOMA) based Cooperative Relaying System (CRS) with Channel State Information (CSI) known at the transmitter end is analyzed under Rician fading channels. For opportunistic transmission of data signals, CSI is used for the source-to-relay and source-to-destination links, which helps the transmitter to select the best out of the cooperative NOMA transmission and the direct transmission of signals, instantaneously. The average achievable rate of the O-NOMA and conventional NOMA (C-NOMA) based CRSs is considered for …
In this paper we present several strategies for multiple relay networks which are constrained by a half-duplex operation, i. e., each node either transmits or receives on a particular resource. Using the discrete memoryless multiple relay channel we present achievable rates for a multilevel partial decode-and-forward approach which generalizes previous results presented by Kramer and Khojastepour et al.. Furthermore, we derive a compress-and-forward approach using a regular encoding scheme which simplifies the encoding and decoding scheme and improves the achievable rates in general. Finally, …
This paper investigates the additive white Gaussian noise two-way relay channel, where two users exchange messages through a relay. Asymmetrical channels are considered where the users can transmit data at different rates and at different power levels. We modify and improve existing coding schemes to obtain three new achievable rate regions. Comparing four downlink-optimal coding schemes, we show that the scheme that gives the best sum-rate performance is (i) complete-decode-forward, when both users transmit at low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR); (ii) functional-decode-forward with nested lattice…
In this report, we summarize the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio and the rate of half-duplex, full-duplex, amplify-and-forward, and decode-and-forward relay-aided communications, and well as the signal-to-noise ratio and the rate of the emerging technology known as reconfigurable intelligent surfaces.
We study a multi-source Gaussian relay network consisting of $K$ source--destination pairs having $K$ unicast sessions. We assume $M$ layers of relays between the sources and the destinations. We find achievable degrees of freedom of the network. Our schemes are based on interference alignment at the transmitters and symbol extension and opportunistic interference cancellation at the relays. For $K$-$L$-$K$ networks, i.e., 2-hop network with $L$ relays, we show $\min\{K,K/2+L/(2(K-1))\}$ degrees of freedom are achievable. For $K$-hop networks with $K$ relays in each layer, we show the full $K$…
In this paper, we study the effect of users' transmission ordering on the common rate and sum rate of pairwise multiway relay channels (MWRCs) with functional-decode-forward strategy. To this end, we first develop a graphical model for the data transmission in a pairwise MWRC. Using this model, we then find the optimal orderings that achieve the maximum common rate and sum rate of the system. The achieved maximum common and sum rate are also found. Moreover, we show that the performance gap between optimal orderings and a random ordering vanishes when SNR increases. Computer simulations are pr…
This paper investigates the system achievable rate and optimization for the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO)-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system with an energy harvesting (EH) relay. Firstly we propose a time switchingbased relaying (TSR) protocol to enable the simultaneous information processing and energy harvesting at the relay. Then, we discuss its achievable rate performance theoretically and formulated an optimization problem to maximize the system achievable rate. As the problem is difficult to solve, we design an Augmented Lagrangian Penalty Function (ALPF) me…
We consider a two-way relay network, where two source nodes, S1 and S2, exchange information through a cluster of relay nodes. The relay nodes receive the sum signal from S1 and S2 in the first time slot. In the second time slot, each relay node multiplies its received signal by a complex coefficient and retransmits the signal to the two source nodes, which leads to a collaborative two-way beamforming system. By applying the principle of analog network coding, each receiver at S1 and S2 cancels the "self-interference" in the received signal from the relay cluster and decodes the message. This …
In a bi-directional relay channel, a pair of nodes wish to exchange independent messages over a shared wireless half-duplex channel with the help of relays. Recent work has mostly considered information theoretic limits of the bi-directional relay channel with two terminal nodes (or end users) and one relay. In this work we consider bi-directional relaying with one base station, multiple terminal nodes and one relay, all of which operate in half-duplex modes. We assume that each terminal node communicates with the base-station in a bi-directional fashion through the relay and do not place any …
This paper studies the achievable degrees of freedom for multi-user MIMO two-way relay channels, where there are $K$ source nodes, each equipped with $M$ antennas, one relay node, equipped with $N$ antennas, and each source node exchanges independent messages with an arbitrary set of other source nodes via the relay. By allowing an arbitrary information exchange pattern, the considered channel model is a unified one. It includes several existing channel models as special cases: $K$-user MIMO Y channel, multi-pair MIMO two-way relay channel, generalized MIMO two-way X relay channel, and $L$-clu…
..... joint decoding provides more freedom in choosing the compression at the relay. However, the question remains whether this freedom of selecting the compression necessarily improves the achievable rate of the original message. It has been shown in (El Gamal and Kim, 2010) that the answer is negative in the single-relay case. In this paper, it is further demonstrated that in the case of multiple relays, there is no improvement on the achievable rate by joint decoding either. More interestingly, it is discovered that any compressions not supporting successive decoding will actually lead to s…
We consider a two-way relay network, where two source nodes, S1 and S2, exchange information through a cluster of relay nodes. The relay nodes receive the sum signal from S1 and S2 in the first time slot. In the second time slot, each relay node multiplies its received signal by a complex coefficient and retransmits the signal to the two source nodes, which leads to a distributed two-way beamforming system. By applying the principle of analog network coding, each receiver at S1 and S2 cancels the ``self-interference'' in the received signal from the relay cluster and decodes the message. This …
This paper investigates the achievable total degrees of freedom (DoF) of the MIMO multi-way relay channel that consists of K users, where each user is equipped with M antennas, and a decode-and-forward relay equipped with N antennas. In this channel, each user wants to convey K-1 private messages to the other users in addition to a common message to all of them. Due to the absence of direct links between the users, communication occurs through the relay in two phases; a multiple access channel phase (MAC) and a broadcast (BC) phase. We drive cut-set bounds on the total DoF of the network, and …
In this paper, we introduce a discrete memoryless State-Dependent Relay Channel with Private Messages (SD-RCPM) as a generalization of the state-dependent relay channel. We investigate two main cases: SD-RCPM with non-causal Channel State Information (CSI), and SD-RCPM with causal CSI. In each case, it is assumed that partial CSI is available at the source and relay. For non-causal case, we establish an achievable rate region using Gel'fand-Pinsker type coding scheme at the nodes informed of CSI, and Compress-and-Forward (CF) scheme at the relay. Using Shannon's strategy and CF scheme, an achi…
Spectral and energy efficiency in 3-way relay channels are studied in this paper. First, achievable sum rate expressions for 3-way relay channels are derived for different relaying protocols. Moreover, an outer bound for the capacity of the 3-way relay channel is presented. Next, leveraging the derived achievable sum rate expressions, two algorithms for joint power allocation at the users and at the relay are designed so as to maximize the system energy efficiency. Numerical results are provided to corroborate and provide insight on the theoretical findings.
This paper concerns maximizing the minimum achievable secrecy rate of a two-way relay network in the presence of an eavesdropper, in which two nodes aim to exchange messages in two hops, using a multi-antenna relay. Throughout the first hop, the two nodes simultaneously transmit their messages to the relay. In the second hop, the relay broadcasts a combination of the received information to the users such that the transmitted signal lies in the null space of the eavesdropper's channel; this is called null space beamforming (NSBF). The best NSBF matrix for maximizing the minimum achievable secr…
This paper addresses the fundamental characteristics of information exchange via multihop network coding over two-way relaying in a wireless ad hoc network. The end-to-end rate regions achieved by time-division multihop (TDMH), MAC-layer network coding (MLNC) and PHY-layer network coding (PLNC) are first characterized. It is shown that MLNC does not always achieve better rates than TDMH, time sharing between TDMH and MLNC is able to achieve a larger rate region, and PLNC dominates the rate regions achieved by TDMH and MLNC. An opportunistic scheduling algorithm for MLNC and PLNC is then propos…
We derive closed-form expressions for the achievable rates of a buffer-aided full-duplex (FD) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Gaussian relay channel. The FD relay still suffers from residual self-interference (RSI) after the application of self-interference mitigation techniques. We investigate both cases of a slow-RSI channel where the RSI is fixed over the entire codeword, and a fast-RSI channel where the RSI changes from one symbol duration to another within the codeword. We show that the RSI can be completely eliminated in the slow-RSI case when the FD relay is equipped with a buffer…
Cooperative relaying is often deployed to enhance the communication reliability (i.e., diversity order) and consequently the end-to-end achievable rate. However, this raises several security concerns when the relays are untrusted since they may have access to the relayed message. In this paper, we study the achievable secrecy diversity order of cooperative networks with untrusted relays. In particular, we consider a network with an N-antenna transmitter (Alice), K single-antenna relays, and a single-antenna destination (Bob). We consider the general scenario where there is no relation between …
This paper revisits the Gaussian degraded relay channel, where the link that carries information from the source to the destination is a physically degraded version of the link that carries information from the source to the relay. The source and the relay are subject to expected power constraints. The $\varepsilon$-capacity of the channel is characterized and it is strictly larger than the capacity for $\varepsilon>0$, which implies that the channel does not possess the strong converse property. The proof of the achievability part is based on several key ideas: block Markov coding which is us…
This work focuses on studying the half-duplex (HD) relaying in the Multiple Access Relay Channel (MARC) and the Compound Multiple Access Channel with a Relay (cMACr). A generalized Quantize-and-Forward (GQF) has been proposed to establish the achievable rate regions. Such scheme is developed based on the variation of the Quantize-and-Forward (QF) scheme and single block with two slots coding structure. The results in this paper can also be considered as a significant extension of the achievable rate region of Half-Duplex Relay Channel (HDRC). Furthermore, the rate regions based on GQF scheme i…
The capacity regions are investigated for two relay broadcast channels (RBCs), where relay links are incorporated into standard two-user broadcast channels to support user cooperation. In the first channel, the Partially Cooperative Relay Broadcast Channel, only one user in the system can act as a relay and transmit to the other user through a relay link. An achievable rate region is derived based on the relay using the decode-and-forward scheme. An outer bound on the capacity region is derived and is shown to be tighter than the cut-set bound. For the special case where the Partially Cooperat…
In this paper, we consider full-duplex and half-duplex Gaussian relay channels where the noises at the relay and destination are arbitrarily correlated. We first derive the capacity upper bound and the achievable rates with three existing schemes: Decode-and-Forward (DF), Compress-and-Forward (CF), and Amplify-and-Forward (AF). We present two capacity results under specific noise correlation coefficients, one being achieved by DF and the other being achieved by direct link transmission (or a special case of CF). The channel for the former capacity result is equivalent to the traditional Gaussi…
Inter-relay interference (IRI) challenges the operation of two-path relaying systems. Furthermore, the unavailability of the channel state information (CSI) at the source and the limited detection capabilities at the relays prevent neither eliminating the interference nor adopting joint detection at the relays nodes. Improper signaling is a powerful signaling scheme that has the capability to reduce the interference impact at the receiver side and improves the achievable rate performance. Therefore, improper signaling is adopted at both relays, which have access to the global CSI. Then, improp…
We present an achievable rate for general Gaussian relay networks. We show that the achievable rate is within a constant number of bits from the information-theoretic cut-set upper bound on the capacity of these networks. This constant depends on the topology of the network, but not the values of the channel gains. Therefore, we uniformly characterize the capacity of Gaussian relay networks within a constant number of bits, for all channel parameters.
In this paper, we study the degrees of freedom (DoF) of the frequency-selective K-user interference channel in the presence of an instantaneous relay (IR) with multiple receive and transmit antennas. We investigate two scenarios based on the IR antennas' cooperation ability. First, we assume that the IR receive and transmit antennas can coordinate with each other, where the transmitted signal of each transmit antenna can depend on the received signals of all receive antennas, and we derive an achievable DoF for this model. In our interference alignment scheme, we divide receivers into two grou…
We investigate the effects of user cooperation on the secrecy of broadcast channels by considering a cooperative relay broadcast channel. We show that user cooperation can increase the achievable secrecy region. We propose an achievable scheme that combines Marton's coding scheme for broadcast channels and Cover and El Gamal's compress-and-forward scheme for relay channels. We derive outer bounds for the rate-equivocation region using auxiliary random variables for single-letterization. Finally, we consider a Gaussian channel and show that both users can have positive secrecy rates, which is n…
