We present an achievable rate for general Gaussian relay networks. We show that the achievable rate is within a constant number of bits from the information-theoretic cut-set upper bound on the capacity of these networks. This constant depends on the topology of the network, but not the values of the channel gains. Therefore, we uniformly characterize the capacity of Gaussian relay networks within a constant number of bits, for all channel parameters.
In this paper, we show that the capacity of the three-node Gaussian relay channel can be achieved to within 1 and 2 bit/sec/Hz using compress-and-forward and amplify-and-forward relaying, respectively.
This paper focuses on the capacity of peer-to-peer relay communications wherein the transmitter are assisted by an arbitrary number of parallel relays, i.e. there is no link and cooperation between the relays themselves. We detail the mathematical model of different relaying strategies including cutset and amplify and forward strategies. The cutset upper bound capacity is presented as a reference to compare another realistic strategy. We present its outer region capacity which is lower than that in the existing literature. We show that a multiple parallel relayed network achieves its maximum c…
In this paper, we consider the transceiver and relay design for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) cellular two-way relay channel (cTWRC), where a multi-antenna base station (BS) exchanges information with multiple multi-antenna mobile stations via a multi-antenna relay station (RS). We propose a novel two-way relaying scheme to approach the sum capacity of the MIMO cTWRC.
We investigate the binary-symmetric parallel-relay network where there is one source, one destination, and multiple relays in parallel. We show that forwarding relays, where the relays merely transmit their received signals, achieve the capacity in two ways: with coded transmission at the source and a finite number of relays, or uncoded transmission at the source and a sufficiently large number of relays. On the other hand, decoding relays, where the relays decode the source message, re-encode, and forward it to the destination, achieve the capacity when the number of relays is small. In addit…
This paper studies the relaying strategies and the approximate capacity of the classic three-node Gaussian relay channel, but where the noises at the relay and at the destination are correlated. It is shown that the capacity of such a relay channel can be achieved to within a constant gap of $\hf \log_2 3 =0.7925$ bits using a modified version of the noisy network coding strategy, where the quantization level at the relay is set in a correlation dependent way. As a corollary, this result establishes that the conventional compress-and-forward scheme also achieves to within a constant gap to the…
Although extensively investigated, the capacity of the two-hop half-duplex (HD) relay channel is not fully understood. In particular, a capacity expression which can be easily evaluated is not available and an explicit coding scheme which achieves the capacity is not known either. In this paper, we derive a new expression for the capacity of the two-hop HD relay channel by simplifying previously derived converse expressions. Compared to previous results, the new capacity expression can be easily evaluated. Moreover, we propose an explicit coding scheme which achieves the capacity. To achieve t…
Although extensively investigated, the capacity of the two-hop half-duplex (HD) relay channel is not fully understood. In particular, a capacity expression which can be evaluated straightforwardly is not available and an explicit coding scheme which achieves the capacity is not known either. In this paper, we derive a new expression for the capacity of the two-hop HD relay channel based on a simplified converse. Compared to previous results, this capacity expression can be easily evaluated. Moreover, we propose an explicit coding scheme which achieves the capacity. To achieve the capacity, the…
This paper focuses on the capacity of point-to-point relay communications wherein the transmitter is assisted by an intermediate relay. We detail the mathematical model of cutset and amplify and forward (AF) relaying strategy. We present the upper bound capacity of each relaying strategy from information theory viewpoint and also in networks with Gaussian channels. We exemplify various outer region capacities of the addressed strategies with two different case studies. The results exhibit that in low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) environments the cutset performance is better than amplify and for…
In this paper, we investigate the capacity of the Gaussian two-hop full-duplex (FD) relay channel with residual self-interference. This channel is comprised of a source, an FD relay, and a destination, where a direct source-destination link does not exist and the FD relay is impaired by residual self-interference. We adopt the worst-case linear self-interference model with respect to the channel capacity, and model the residual self-interference as a Gaussian random variable whose variance depends on the amplitude of the transmit symbol of the relay. For this channel, we derive the capacity an…
Recently, it has been shown that a quantize-map-and-forward scheme approximately achieves (within a constant number of bits) the Gaussian relay network capacity for arbitrary topologies. This was established using Gaussian codebooks for transmission and random mappings at the relays. In this paper, we show that the same approximation result can be established by using lattices for transmission and quantization along with structured mappings at the relays.
We consider multi-hop multiple access (MAC) and broadcast channels (BC) where communication takes place with the assistance of relays that amplify and forward (AF) their received signals. For a two hop parallel AF relay MAC, assuming a sum power constraint across all relays we characterize optimal relay amplification factors and the resulting capacity regions. We find that the parallel AF relay MAC with total transmit power of the two users $P_1+P_2=P$ and total relay power $P_R$ is the dual of the parallel AF relay BC where the MAC source nodes become the BC destination nodes, the MAC destina…
The deterministic capacity of a relay network is the capacity of a network when relays are restricted to transmitting \emph{reliable} information, that is, (asymptotically) deterministic function of the source message. In this paper it is shown that the deterministic capacity of a number of MIMO relay networks can be found in the low power regime where $\SNR\to0$. This is accomplished through deriving single letter upper bounds and finding the limit of these as $\SNR\to0$. The advantage of this technique is that it overcomes the difficulty of finding optimum distributions for mutual informatio…
This paper studies the noncausal relay channel, also known as the relay channel with unlimited lookahead, introduced by El Gamal, Hassanpour, and Mammen. Unlike the standard relay channel model, where the relay encodes its signal based on the previous received output symbols, the relay in the noncausal relay channel encodes its signal as a function of the entire received sequence. In the existing coding schemes, the relay uses this noncausal information solely to recover the transmitted message and then cooperates with the sender to communicate this message to the receiver. However, it is show…
The Gaussian parallel relay network, in which two parallel relays assist a source to convey information to a destination, was introduced by Schein and Gallager. An upper bound on the capacity can be obtained by considering broadcast cut between the source and relays and multiple access cut between relays and the destination. Niesen and Diggavi derived an upper bound for Gaussian parallel $N$-relay network by considering all other possible cuts and showed an achievability scheme that can attain rates close to the upper bound in different channel gain regimes thus establishing approximate capaci…
This paper characterizes the capacity of a class of modulo additive noise relay channels, in which the relay observes a corrupted version of the noise and has a separate channel to the destination. The capacity is shown to be strictly below the cut-set bound in general and achievable using a quantize-and-forward strategy at the relay. This result confirms a conjecture by Ahlswede and Han about the capacity of channels with rate limited state information at the destination for this particular class of channels.
We derive the capacity of the state-dependent half-duplex relay channel without source-destination link. The output of the state-dependent half-duplex relay channel depends on the randomly varying channel states of the source-relay and relay-destination links, which are known causally at all three nodes. For this channel, we prove a converse and show the achievability of the capacity based on a buffer-aided relaying protocol with adaptive link selection. This protocol chooses in each times slot one codeword to be transmitted over either the source-relay or the relay-destination channel dependi…
We study the capacity region of a deterministic 4-node network, where 3 nodes can only communicate via the fourth one. However, the fourth node is not merely a relay since it can exchange private messages with all other nodes. This situation resembles the case where a base station relays messages between users and delivers messages between the backbone system and the users. We assume an asymmetric scenario where the channel between any two nodes is not reciprocal. First, an upper bound on the capacity region is obtained based on the notion of single sided genie. Subsequently, we construct an a…
In this paper, the Gaussian relay channel with linear time-invariant relay filtering is considered. Based on spectral theory for stationary processes, the maximum achievable rate for this subclass of linear Gaussian relay operation is obtained in finite-letter characterization. The maximum rate can be achieved by dividing the overall frequency band into at most eight subbands and by making the relay behave as an instantaneous amplify-and-forward relay at each subband. Numerical results are provided to evaluate the performance of LTI relaying.
In this paper, we derive the capacity of the deterministic relay networks with relay messages. We consider a network which consists of five nodes, four of which can only communicate via the fifth one. However, the fifth node is not merely a relay as it may exchange private messages with the other network nodes. First, we develop an upper bound on the capacity region based on the notion of a single sided genie. In the course of the achievability proof, we also derive the deterministic capacity of a 4-user relay network (without private messages at the relay). The capacity achieving schemes use …
A discrete memoryless half-duplex relay channel is constructed from a broadcast channel from the source to the relay and destination and a multiple access channel from the source and relay to the destination. When the relay listens, the channel operates in the broadcast mode. The channel switches to the multiple access mode when the relay transmits. If the broadcast component channel is physically degraded, the half-duplex relay channel will also be referred to as physically degraded. The capacity of this degraded half-duplex relay channel is examined. It is shown that the block Markov coding …
The class of orthogonal relay channels in which the orthogonal channels connecting the source terminal to the relay and the destination, and the relay to the destination, depend on a state sequence, is considered. It is assumed that the state sequence is fully known at the destination while it is not known at the source or the relay. The capacity of this class of relay channels is characterized, and shown to be achieved by the partial decode-compress-and-forward (pDCF) scheme. Then the capacity of certain binary and Gaussian state-dependent orthogonal relay channels are studied in detail, and …
We present the ε-outage capacity of incremental relaying at low signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) in a wireless cooperative network with slow Rayleigh fading channels. The relay performs decode-and-forward and repetition coding is employed in the network, which is optimal in the low SNR regime. We derive an expression on the optimal relay location that maximizes the ε-outage capacity. It is shown that this location is independent of the outage probability and SNR but only depends on the channel conditions represented by a path-loss factor. We compare our results to the ε-outage capacity of the cut-…
A multiple input multiple output (MIMO) two-way relay channel is considered, where two sources want to exchange messages with each other using multiple relay nodes, and both the sources and relay nodes are equipped with multiple antennas. Both the sources are assumed to have equal number of antennas and have perfect channel state information (CSI) for all the channels of the MIMO two-way relay channel, whereas, each relay node is either assumed to have CSI for its transmit and receive channel (the coherent case) or no CSI for any of the channels (the non-coherent case). The main results in thi…
This paper considers the two-way relay channel (TWRC) where two users communicate via a relay. For the restricted TWRC where the uplink from the users to the relay is any deterministic function and the downlink from the relay to the users is any arbitrary channel, the capacity region is obtained. The TWRC considered is restricted in the sense that each user can only transmit a function of its message.
The relay broadcast channel (RBC) is considered, in which a transmitter communicates with two receivers with the assistance of a relay. Based on different degradation orders among the relay and the receivers' outputs, three types of physically degraded RBCs (PDRBCs) are introduced. Inner bounds and outer bounds are derived on the capacity region of the presented three types. The bounds are tight for two types of PDRBCs: 1) one receiver's output is a degraded form of the other receiver's output, and the relay's output is a degraded form of the weaker receiver's output; 2) one receiver's output …
This paper investigates the capacity of a wireless two way relay channel in which two end nodes exchange information via a relay node. The capacity is defined in the information-theoretic sense as the maximum information exchange rate between the two end nodes. We give an upper bound of the capacity by applying the cut-set theorem. We prove that this upper bound can be approached in low SNR region using "separated" multiple access for uplinks from the end nodes to the relay in which the data from the end nodes are individually decoded at the relay; and network-coding broadcast for downlinks fr…
In the relay based telecommunications with $K$ relays between the source and destination, $K+1$ time or frequency slots are required for a single frame transmission. However, without the relays, only one time or frequency slot is used for a single frame transmission. Therefore, despite the benefits of relaying systems, this type of communications is not efficient from the spectral efficiency viewpoint. One solution to reduce this issue might be the full-duplex (FD) relays. An old technique which is reconsidered recently to improve the spectral efficiency of telecommunication systems. However, …
The capacity of a class of deterministic relay channels with the transmitter input X, the receiver output Y, the relay output Y_1 = f(X, Y), and a separate communication link from the relay to the receiver with capacity R_0, is shown to be C(R_0) = \max_{p(x)} \min \{I(X;Y)+R_0, I(X;Y, Y_1) \}. Thus every bit from the relay is worth exactly one bit to the receiver. Two alternative coding schemes are presented that achieve this capacity. The first scheme, ``hash-and-forward'', is based on a simple yet novel use of random binning on the space of relay outputs, while the second scheme uses the us…
In this paper, we obtain a general achievable rate region and some certain capacity theorems for multiple-access relay channel (MARC), using decode and forward (DAF) strategy at the relay, superposition coding at the transmitters. Our general rate region (i) generalizes the achievability part of Slepian-Wolf multiple-access capacity theorem to the MARC, (ii) extends the Cover-El Gamal best achievable rate for the relay channel with DAF strategy to the MARC, (iii) gives the Kramer-Wijengaarden rate region for the MARC, (iv) meets max-flow min-cut upper bound and leads to the capacity regions of…
In this work, the achievable rate of three-node relay systems with selection relaying under statistical delay constraints, imposed on the limitations of the maximum end-to-end delay violation probabilities, is investigated. It is assumed that there are queues of infinite size at both the source and relay node, and the source can select the relay or destination for data reception. Given selection relaying policy, the effective bandwidth of the arrival processes of the queue at the relay is derived. Then, the maximum constant arrival rate can be identified as the maximum effective capacity as a …
Consider the broadcast relay channel (BRC) which consists of a source sending information over a two user broadcast channel in presence of two relay nodes that help the transmission to the destinations. Clearly, this network with five nodes involves all the problems encountered in relay and broadcast channels. New inner bounds on the capacity region of this class of channels are derived. These results can be seen as a generalization and hence unification of previous work in this topic. Our bounds are based on the idea of recombination of message bits and various effective coding strategies for…
Consider a Gaussian relay network where a number of sources communicate to a destination with the help of several layers of relays. Recent work has shown that a compress-and-forward based strategy at the relays can achieve the capacity of this network within an additive gap. In this strategy, the relays quantize their observations at the noise level and map it to a random Gaussian codebook. The resultant capacity gap is independent of the SNR's of the channels in the network but linear in the total number of nodes. In this paper, we show that if the relays quantize their signals at a resolutio…
In this paper, we completely characterize the deterministic capacity region of a four-node relay network with no direct links between the nodes, where each node communicates with the three other nodes via a relay. Towards this end, we develop an upper bound on the deterministic capacity region, based on the notion of a one-sided genie. To establish achievability, we use the detour schemes that achieve the upper bound by routing specific bits via indirect paths instead of sending them directly.
We derive the outage capacity of a bursty version of the amplify-and-forward (BAF) protocol for small signal-to-noise ratios when incremental relaying is used. We show that the ratio between the outage capacities of BAF and the cut-set bound is independent of the relay position and that BAF is outage optimal for certain conditions on the target rate R. This is in contrast to decode-and-forward with incremental relaying, where the relay location strongly determines the performance of the cooperative protocol. We further derive the outage capacity for a network consisting of an arbitrary number …
This paper studies the transceiver design of the Gaussian two-pair two-way relay channel (TWRC), where two pairs of users exchange information through a common relay in a pairwise manner. Our main contribution is to show that the capacity of the Gaussian two-pair TWRC is achievable to within 1/2 bit for arbitrary channel conditions. In the proof, we develop a hybrid coding scheme involving Gaussian random coding, nested lattice coding, superposition coding, and network-coded decoding. Further, we present a message-reassembling strategy to decouple the coding design for the user-to-relay and re…
In this correspondence, we consider a half-duplex large relay network, which consists of one source-destination pair and $N$ relay nodes, each of which is connected with a subset of the other relays via signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)-limited out-of-band conferencing links. The asymptotic achievable rates of two basic relaying schemes with the "$p$-portion" conferencing strategy are studied: For the decode-and-forward (DF) scheme, we prove that the DF rate scales as $\mathcal{O} (\log (N))$; for the amplify-and-forward (AF) scheme, we prove that it asymptotically achieves the capacity upper bound …
The capacity of a class of multi-way relay channels, where L users communicate via a relay (at possibly different rates), is derived for the case where the channel outputs are modular sums of the channel inputs and the receiver noise. The cut-set upper bound to the capacity is shown to be achievable. More specifically, the capacity is achieved using (i) rate splitting, (ii) functional-decode-forward, and (iii) joint source-channel coding. We note that while separate source-channel coding can achieve the common-rate capacity, joint source-channel coding is used to achieve the capacity for the g…
Capacity bounds are studied for the multiple-antenna complex Gaussian relay channel with t1 transmitting antennas at the sender, r2 receiving and t2 transmitting antennas at the relay, and r3 receiving antennas at the receiver. It is shown that the partial decode-forward coding scheme achieves within min(t1,r2) bits from the cutset bound and at least one half of the cutset bound, establishing a good approximate expression of the capacity. A similar additive gap of min(t1 + t2, r3) + r2 bits is shown to be achieved by the compress-forward coding scheme.
The interference channel with a cognitive relay consists of a classical interference channel with two sourcedestination pairs and with an additional cognitive relay that has a priori knowledge of the sources' messages and aids in the sources' transmission. We derive a new outer bound for this channel using an argument originally devised for the "more capable" broadcast channel, and show the achievability of the proposed outer bound in the "very strong interference" regime, a class of channels where there is no loss in optimality if both destinations decode both messages. This result is analogo…
In this paper we study the capacity region of the multi-pair bidirectional (or two-way) wireless relay network, in which a relay node facilitates the communication between multiple pairs of users. This network is a generalization of the well known bidirectional relay channel, where we have only one pair of users. We examine this problem in the context of the deterministic channel interaction model, which eliminates the channel noise and allows us to focus on the interaction between signals. We characterize the capacity region of this network when the relay is operating at either full-duplex mo…
The multi-way relay channel is a multicast network where L users exchange data through a relay. In this paper, the capacity region of a class of multi-way relay channels is derived, where the channel inputs and outputs take values over finite fields. The cut-set upper bound to the capacity region is derived and is shown to be achievable by our proposed functional-decode-forward coding strategy. More specifically, for the general case where the users can transmit at possibly different rates, functional-decode-forward, combined with rate splitting and joint source-channel decoding, is proved to …
In this paper, we derive the capacity of a special class of mesh networks. A mesh network is defined as a heterogeneous wireless network in which the transmission among power limited nodes is assisted by powerful relays, which use the same wireless medium. We find the capacity of the mesh network when there is one source, one destination, and multiple relays. We call this channel the single source multiple relay single destination (SSMRSD) mesh network. Our approach is as follows. We first look at an upper bound on the information theoretic capacity of these networks in the Gaussian setting. W…
In this paper, a two-hop decode-and-forward cognitive radio system with deployed interference alignment is considered. The relay node is energy-constrained and scavenges the energy from the interference signals. In the literature, there are two main energy harvesting protocols, namely, time-switching relaying and power-splitting relaying. We first demonstrate how to design the beamforming matrices for the considered primary and secondary networks. Then, the system capacity under perfect and imperfect channel state information scenarios, considering different portions of time-switching and powe…
We consider the Gaussian N-relay diamond network, where a source wants to communicate to a destination node through a layer of N-relay nodes. We investigate the following question: what fraction of the capacity can we maintain by using only k out of the N available relays? We show that independent of the channel configurations and the operating SNR, we can always find a subset of k relays which alone provide a rate (kC/(k+1))-G, where C is the information theoretic cutset upper bound on the capacity of the whole network and G is a constant that depends only on N and k (logarithmic in N and lin…
The downlink of symmetric Cloud Radio Access Networks (C-RANs) with multiple relays and a single receiver is studied. Lower and upper bounds are derived on the capacity. The lower bound is achieved by Marton's coding which facilitates dependence among the multiple-access channel inputs. The upper bound uses Ozarow's technique to augment the system with an auxiliary random variable. The bounds are studied over scalar Gaussian C-RANs and are shown to meet and characterize the capacity for interesting regimes of operation.
We consider the arbitrarily varying Gaussian relay channel with sender frequency division. We determine the random code capacity, and establish lower and upper bounds on the deterministic code capacity. It is observed that when the channel input is subject to a low power limit, the deterministic code capacity may be strictly lower than the random code capacity, and the gap vanishes as the input becomes less constrained. A second model addressed in this paper is the general case of primitive arbitrarily varying relay channels. We develop lower and upper bounds on the random code capacity, and g…
The capacity region of multi-pair bidirectional relay networks, in which a relay node facilitates the communication between multiple pairs of users, is studied. This problem is first examined in the context of the linear shift deterministic channel model. The capacity region of this network when the relay is operating at either full-duplex mode or half-duplex mode for arbitrary number of pairs is characterized. It is shown that the cut-set upper-bound is tight and the capacity region is achieved by a so called divide-and-conquer relaying strategy. The insights gained from the deterministic net…
Handling interference is one of the main challenges in the design of wireless networks. One of the key approaches to interference management is node cooperation, which can be classified into two main types: relaying and feedback. In this work we consider simultaneous application of both cooperation types in the presence of interference. We obtain exact characterization of the capacity regions for Rayleigh fading and phase fading interference channels with a relay and with feedback links, in the strong and very strong interference regimes. Four feedback configurations are considered: (1) feedba…
We study the arbitrarily varying relay channel, and establish the cutset bound and partial decode-forward bound on the random code capacity. We further determine the random code capacity for special cases. Then, we consider conditions under which the deterministic code capacity is determined as well.
This paper considers Gaussian half-duplex diamond $n$-relay networks, where a source communicates with a destination by hopping information through one layer of $n$ non-communicating relays that operate in half-duplex. The main focus consists of investigating the following question: What is the contribution of a single relay on the approximate capacity of the entire network? In particular, approximate capacity refers to a quantity that approximates the Shannon capacity within an additive gap which only depends on $n$, and is independent of the channel parameters. This paper answers the above q…
We study a fading linear finite-field relay network having multiple source-destination pairs. Because of the interference created by different unicast sessions, the problem of finding its capacity region is in general difficult. We observe that, since channels are time-varying, relays can deliver their received signals by waiting for appropriate channel realizations such that the destinations can decode their messages without interference. We propose a block Markov encoding and relaying scheme that exploits such channel variations. By deriving a general cut-set upper bound and an achievable ra…
We consider the Gaussian "diamond" or parallel relay network, in which a source node transmits a message to a destination node with the help of N relays. Even for the symmetric setting, in which the channel gains to the relays are identical and the channel gains from the relays are identical, the capacity of this channel is unknown in general. The best known capacity approximation is up to an additive gap of order N bits and up to a multiplicative gap of order N^2, with both gaps independent of the channel gains. In this paper, we approximate the capacity of the symmetric Gaussian N-relay diam…
In this paper, we study the interference relay-without-delay channel which is an interference channel with a relay helping the communication. We assume the relay's transmit symbol depends not only on its past received symbols but also on its current received symbol, which is an appropriate model for studying amplify-and-forward type relaying when the overall delay spread is much smaller than the inverse of the bandwidth. For the discrete memoryless interference relay-without-delay channel, we show an outer bound using genie-aided outer bounding. For the Gaussian interference relay-without-dela…
In this paper, we derive UWB version of (i) general best achievable rate for the relay channel with decode-andforward strategy and (ii) max-flow min-cut upper bound, such that the UWB relay channel can be studied considering the obtained lower and upper bounds. Then, we show that by appropriately choosing the noise correlation coefficients, our new upper bound coincides with the lower bound in special cases of degraded and reversely degraded UWB relay channels. Finally, some numerical results are illustrated.
The primitive relay channel, introduced by Cover in 1987, is the simplest single-source single-destination network model that captures some of the most essential features and challenges of relaying in wireless networks. Recently, Wu and Ozgur developed upper bounds on the capacity of this channel that are tighter than the cutset bound. In this paper, we recover, generalize and improve their upper bounds with simpler proofs that rely on a converse technique recently introduced by Liu, van Handel and Verdú that builds on reverse hypercontractivity. To our knowledge, this is the first application…
The L-user additive white Gaussian noise multiway relay channel is investigated, where L users exchange information at the same rate through a single relay. A new achievable rate region, based on the functional-decode-forward coding strategy, is derived. For the case where there are three or more users, and all nodes transmit at the same power, the capacity is obtained. For the case where the relay power scales with the number of users, it is shown that both compress-forward and functional-decode-forward achieve rates within a constant number of bits of the capacity at all SNR levels; in addit…
