This paper considers the two-way relay channel (TWRC) where two users communicate via a relay. For the restricted TWRC where the uplink from the users to the relay is any deterministic function and the downlink from the relay to the users is any arbitrary channel, the capacity region is obtained. The TWRC considered is restricted in the sense that each user can only transmit a function of its message.
We consider relay selection technique in a cooperative cellular network where user terminals act as mobile relays to help the communications between base station (BS) and mobile station (MS). A novel relay selection scheme, called Joint Uplink and Downlink Relay Selection (JUDRS), is proposed in this paper. Specifically, we generalize JUDRS in two key aspects: (i) relay is selected jointly for uplink and downlink, so that the relay selection overhead can be reduced, and (ii) we consider to minimize the weighted total energy consumption of MS, relay and BS by taking into account channel quality…
This paper considers the multi-way relay channel (MWRC) where multiple users exchange messages via a single relay. The capacity region is derived for a special class of MWRCs where (i) the uplink and the downlink are separated in the sense that there is no direct user-to-user links, (ii) the channel is restricted in the sense that each user's transmitted channel symbols can depend on only its own message, but not on its received channel symbols, and (iii) the uplink is any deterministic function.
While two-way relaying is a promising way to enhance the spectral efficiency of wireless networks, the imbalance of relay-user distances may lead to excessive wireless power at the nearby-users. To exploit the excessive power, the recently proposed harvest-then-transmit technique can be applied. However, it is well-known that harvest-then-transmit introduces uplink-downlink coupling for a user. Together with the co-dependent relationship between paired users and interference among multiple user pairs, wirelessly powered two-way relay network suffers from the unique pairwise uplink-downlink cou…
We use stochastic geometry to analyze the performance of a partial decode-and-forward (PDF) relaying scheme applied in a user-assisted relaying setting, where an active user relays data through another idle user in uplink cellular communication. We present the geometric model of a network deploying user-assisted relaying and propose two geometric cooperation policies for fast and slow fading channels. We analytically derive the cooperation probability for both policies. This cooperation probability is further used in the analytical derivation of the moments of inter-cell interference power cau…
The paper treats a multiuser relay scenario where multiple user equipments (UEs) have a two-way communication with a common Base Station (BS) in the presence of a buffer-equipped Relay Station (RS). Each of the uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) transmission can take place over a direct or over a relayed path. Traditionally, the UL and the DL path of a given two-way link are coupled, that is, either both are direct links or both are relayed links. By removing the restriction for coupling, one opens the design space for a decoupled two-way links. Following this, we devise two protocols: orthogonal d…
This paper considers a multiuser massive multiple-input multiple-output uplink with the help of an analog amplify-and-forward relay. The base station equips a large array of $N_d$ antennas but is supported by a far smaller number of radio-frequency chains. By first deriving new results for a cascaded phase-aligned two-hop channel, we obtain a tight bound for the ergodic rate in closed form for both perfect and quantized channel phase information. The rate is characterized as a function of a scaled equivalent signal-to-noise ratio of the two-hop channel. It implies that the source and relay pow…
Uplink-downlink duality refers to the fact that under a sum-power constraint, the capacity regions of a Gaussian multiple-access channel and a Gaussian broadcast channel with Hermitian transposed channel matrices are identical. This paper generalizes this result to a cooperative cellular network, in which remote access-points are deployed as relays in serving the users under the coordination of a central processor (CP). In this model, the users and the relays are connected over noisy wireless links, while the relays and the CP are connected over noiseless but rate-limited fronthaul links. Base…
We consider a multi-way relay network with an orthogonal uplink and correlated sources, and we characterise reliable communication (in the usual Shannon sense) with a single-letter expression. The characterisation is obtained using a joint source-channel random-coding argument, which is based on a combination of Wyner et al.'s "Cascaded Slepian-Wolf Source Coding" and Tuncel's "Slepian-Wolf Coding over Broadcast Channels". We prove a separation theorem for the special case of two nodes; that is, we show that a modular code architecture with separate source and channel coding functions is (asym…
In this paper, we consider a relay-assisted uplink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system. In this system, two radio frequency (RF) users are grouped for simultaneous transmissions, over each resource block, to an intermediate relay. The relay then forwards the amplified version of the users' aggregated signals, in the presence of multiuser interference, to a relatively far destination. In order to cope with the users' ever-increasing desire for higher data rates, a high-throughput free-space optics (FSO) link is employed as the relay-destination backhaul link. It is assumed that the FSO…
We consider distributed Luby transform (DLT) codes for efficient packet transmission in a multi-way relay network, where the links are modeled as erasure channels. Density evolution is applied for asymptotic performance analysis, and subsequently used in a linear-programming design framework for optimizing the degree distribution at the relay in terms of overhead. Moreover a buffer is introduced at the relay to enable efficient downlink transmission even if packets are lost during uplink transmission. Performance losses in terms of delay and/or erasure rates caused by link erasures during upli…
In this paper, a relay-aided two-phase transmission protocol for the smart factory scenario is proposed. This protocol aims at enabling all robots' ultra-reliable target number of uplink critical data transmission within a latency constraint by jointly optimizing the relay selection, resource block (RB) assignment, and transmit power allocation. Such protocol design is formulated as a mixed-integer and strictly non-convex problem where optimization variables are mutual coupling, which is definitely challenging. Instead of conventional methods designed for solving the problem, we leverage the p…
We consider a multipair two-way relay communication network, where pairs of user devices exchange information via a relay system. The communication between users employs time division duplex, with all users transmitting simultaneously to relays in one time slot and relays sending the processed information to all users in the next time slot. The relay system consists of a large number of single antenna units that can form groups. Within each group, relays exchange channel state information (CSI), signals received in the uplink and signals intended for downlink transmission. On the other hand, p…
In this paper, we consider a relay-assisted uplink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system where two radio frequency (RF) users are grouped for simultaneous transmission, over each resource block, to an intermediate relay which forwards the amplified version of the users' aggregated signals in the presence of multiuser interference to a relatively far destination. In order to cope with the users' ever-increasing desire for higher data rates, a high-throughput free-space optics (FSO) link is employed as the relay-destination backhaul link. Dynamic-order decoding is employed at the destinat…
Uplink-downlink duality refers to the fact that the Gaussian broadcast channel has the same capacity region as the dual Gaussian multiple-access channel under the same sumpower constraint. This paper investigates a similar duality relationship between the uplink and downlink of a cloud radio access network (C-RAN), where a central processor (CP) cooperatively serves multiple mobile users through multiple remote radio heads (RRHs) connected to the CP with finite-capacity fronthaul links. The uplink of such a C-RAN model corresponds to a multipleaccess relay channel; the downlink corresponds to …
In this paper, we develop a resource allocation algorithm for uplink of in-band full-duplex (FD) cellular networks. The FD cellular network is assumed to be based on orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) and consists of a base station communicating with multiple users. Some of the users in the network act as relay for other users and help them to transmit their data to the base station. These relays are FD and work based on amplify and forward (AF) protocol. By appropriate selection of the relays and optimized allocation of subcarriers and powers to all users, we try to maximiz…
In this paper, we develop novel two-tier interference management strategies that enable macrocell users (MUEs) to improve their performance, with the help of open-access femtocells. To this end, we propose a rate-splitting technique using which the MUEs optimize their uplink transmissions by dividing their signals into two types: a coarse message that is intended for direct transmission to the macrocell base station and a fine message that is decoded by a neighboring femtocell and subsequently relayed over a heterogeneous (wireless/wired) backhaul. For deploying the proposed technique, we form…
In this work, we present a cloud-aided uplink framework for multi-way multiple-antenna relay systems which facilitates joint linear Maximum Likelihood (ML) symbol detection in the cloud and where users are selected to simultaneously transmit to each other aided by relays. We also investigate relay selection techniques for the proposed cloud-aided uplink framework that uses cloud-based buffers and physical-layer network coding. In particular, we develop a novel multi-way relay selection protocol based on the selection of the best link, denoted as Multi-Way Cloud-Aided Best-User-Link (MWC-Best-U…
This paper investigates the capacity of a wireless two way relay channel in which two end nodes exchange information via a relay node. The capacity is defined in the information-theoretic sense as the maximum information exchange rate between the two end nodes. We give an upper bound of the capacity by applying the cut-set theorem. We prove that this upper bound can be approached in low SNR region using "separated" multiple access for uplinks from the end nodes to the relay in which the data from the end nodes are individually decoded at the relay; and network-coding broadcast for downlinks fr…
In this paper, we first propose interference alignment (IA) scheme for uplink transmission of multiple-input-mulitple-output (MIMO) cellular network with a help of relay which operates in halfduplex mode. The proposed scheme only requires global channel state information (CSI) knowledge at relay and no transmitter beamforming and time extension is required at user equipment (UE), which differs from the conventional IA schemes for cellular network. We derive the feasibility condition of the proposed scheme for the general network configuration and analyze the degrees-of-freedom (DoF) performanc…
In this paper, we study the degrees of freedom (DoF) of the symmetric multi-relay multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Y channel, where three user nodes, each with M antennas, communicate via K geographically separated relay nodes, each with N antennas. For this model, we establish a general DoF achievability framework based on linear precoding and post-processing methods. The framework poses a nonlinear problem with respect to user precoders and post-processors, as well as relay precoders. To solve this problem, we adopt an uplink-downlink asymmetric strategy, where the user precoders are de…
Wireless random access protocols are attracting a revived research interest as a simple yet effective solution for machine-type communications. In the quest to improve reliability and spectral efficiency of such schemes, the use of multiple receivers has recently emerged as a promising option. We study the potential of this approach considering a population of users that transmit data packets following a simple slotted ALOHA policy to a set of non-cooperative receivers or relays (uplink phase). These, in turn, independently forward - part of - what decoded towards a collecting sink (downlink p…
We consider a relay-aided Slotted ALOHA solution for uplink random access for an Optical Wireless Communications (OWC)-based Internet of Things (IoT). The first phase of uplink, the one between IoT devices and the relays, is realized using indoor OWC, while the second phase, between the relays and a base station, represents the long-range RF transmission based on low-power wide area network such as LoRaWAN and occurs outdoors. The throughput performance dependence on the OWC and RF channel conditions is observed. The behavior of the performance gain due to adding relays is highlighted and inve…
Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is regarded as a candidate radio access technique for the next generation wireless networks because of its manifold spectral gains. A two-phase cooperative relaying strategy (CRS) is proposed in this paper by exploiting the concept of both downlink and uplink NOMA (termed as DU-CNOMA). In the proposed protocol, a transmitter considered as a source transmits a NOMA composite signal consisting of two symbols to the destination and relay during the first phase, following the principle of downlink NOMA. In the second phase, the relay forwards the symbol decode…
This paper presents joint maximum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (MSINR) and relay selection algorithms for distributed beamforming. We propose a joint MSINR and restricted greedy search relay selection (RGSRS) algorithm with a total relay transmit power constraint that iteratively optimizes both the beamforming weights at the relays nodes, maximizing the SINR at the destination. Specifically, we devise a relay selection scheme that based on greedy search and compare it to other schemes like restricted random relay selection (RRRS) and restricted exhaustive search relay selection (RES…
In this paper, a Gaussian two-way relay channel, where two source nodes exchange messages with each other through a relay, is considered. We assume that all nodes operate in full-duplex mode and there is no direct channel between the source nodes. We propose an achievable scheme composed of nested lattice codes for the uplink and structured binning for the downlink. We show that the scheme achieves within 1/2 bit from the cut-set bound for all channel parameters and becomes asymptotically optimal as the signal to noise ratios increase.
This letter considers a compute-and-forward two-way relaying channel with simultaneous wireless information and power transfer. Specifically, two single-antenna users exchange information via a multi-antenna relay station based on nested lattice codes. Meanwhile, wireless energies flow from the relay to users for circuit consumption and uplink transmission. Based on this model, an optimization problem is formulated to minimize the transmit power at relay, while guaranteeing the minimal transmission rate at each user. To solve the problem, we propose an efficient iterative algorithm to jointly …
Uplink and downlink cloud radio access networks are modeled as two-hop K-user L-relay networks, whereby small base-stations act as relays for end-to-end communications and are connected to a central processor via orthogonal fronthaul links of finite capacities. Simplified versions of network compress-forward (or noisy network coding) and distributed decode-forward are presented to establish inner bounds on the capacity region for uplink and downlink communications, that match the respective cutset bounds to within a finite gap independent of the channel gains and signal to noise ratios. These …
This paper is on relay selection in uplink of an in-band full-duplex (IBFD) cooperative cellular network. Assuming an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) cellular network, we develop a relay selection and resource allocation algorithm for this network. The relay selection algorithms select the best relay based on distance between users and signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) that operate in amplify and forward (AF) mode. The optimization problem allocates the optimum subcarriers and powers to all users to maximize the average sum-rate of the network. In addition, t…
This paper aims to characterize the capacity limits of a wireless cellular network with a full-duplex (FD) base-station (BS) and half-duplex user terminals, in which three independent messages are communicated: the uplink message $m_1$ from the uplink user to the BS, the downlink message $m_2$ from the BS to the downlink user, and the device-to-device (D2D) message $m_3$ from the uplink user to the downlink user. From an information theoretical perspective, the overall network can be viewed as a generalization of the FD relay broadcast channel with a side message transmitted from the relay to …
In this paper, we study a communication system consisting of three end-nodes, e.g. a single transceiver base station (BS), one transmitting and one receiving user equipments (UEs), and a common two-way relay node (RN) wherein the full-duplex BS transmits to the receiving UE in downlink direction and receives from the transmitting UE in uplink direction with the help of the intermediate full-duplex RN. We call this system model as interference two-way relay channel (ITWRC) with three end-nodes. Information theoretic bounds corresponding this system model are derived and analyzed so as to better…
In this paper, the performance of two-way relaying in mixed RF/FSO communication system with a backup RF link is investigated. Uplink RF channels are used to send data of $K$ users to a two-way relay, $R$, whereas FSO link is mainly used to exchange data between a base station $S$ and $R$. We propose to have a backup RF link between the relay $R$ and the node $S$ to improve reliability under certain conditions. All uplink RF channels follow Rayleigh fading model while $α$-$μ$ is adopted to model both backup RF and FSO links. We approximate the widely used Gamma-Gamma fading model using the $α$…
Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) have drawn considerable attention recently due to their controllable scattering elements that are able to direct electromagnetic waves into desirable directions. Although RISs share some similarities with relays, the two have fundamental differences impacting their performance. To harness the benefits of both relaying and RISs, a multi-user communication system is proposed in this paper wherein a relay and an RIS cooperate to improve performance in terms of energy efficiency. To utilize the RIS efficiently, the discrete phase shifts of the RIS elements…
In this paper, we design interference free transceivers for multi-user two-way relay systems, where a multi-antenna base station (BS) simultaneously exchanges information with multiple single-antenna users via a multi-antenna amplify-and-forward relay station (RS). To offer a performance benchmark and provide useful insight into the transceiver structure, we employ alternating optimization to find optimal transceivers at the BS and RS that maximizes the bidirectional sum rate. We then propose a low complexity scheme, where the BS transceiver is the zero-forcing precoder and detector, and the R…
In this work, a relay channel is studied in which a source encoder communicates with a destination decoder through a number of out-of-band relays that are connected to the decoder through capacity-constrained digital backhaul links. This model is motivated by the uplink of cloud radio access networks. In this scenario, a novel transmission and relaying strategies are proposed in which multi-layer transmission is used, on the one hand, to adaptively leverage the different decoding capabilities of the relays and, on the other hand, to enable hybrid decode-and-forward (DF) and compress-and-forwar…
This paper considers the finite-field multi-way relay channel with pairwise message sharing, where multiple users exchange messages through a single relay and where the users may share parts of their source messages (meaning that some message parts are known/common to more than one user). In this paper, we design an optimal functional-decode-forward coding scheme that takes the shared messages into account. More specifically, we design an optimal function for the relay to decode (from the users on the uplink) and forward (back to the users on the downlink). We then show that this proposed func…
Device-to-Device (D2D) communication is envisioned to be an integral component of 5G networks, and a technique for meeting the demand for high data rates. In a cellular network, D2D allows not only direct communication between users, but also device relaying. In this paper, a simple instance of device-relaying is investigated, and the impact of D2D on fairness among users is studied. Namely, a cellular network consisting of two D2D-enabled users and a base-station (BS) is considered. Thus, the users who want to establish communication with the BS can act as relays for each other's signals. Whi…
Two-way relaying (TWR) reduces the spectral-efficiency loss caused in conventional half-duplex relaying. TWR is possible when two nodes exchange data simultaneously through a relay. In cellular systems, data exchange between base station (BS) and users is usually not simultaneous e.g., a user (TUE) has uplink data to transmit during multiple access (MAC) phase, but does not have downlink data to receive during broadcast (BC) phase. This non-simultaneous data exchange will reduce TWR to spectrally-inefficient conventional half-duplex relaying. With infrastructure relays, where multiple users co…
In this paper, we consider a hierarchical distributed multi-task learning (MTL) system where distributed users wish to jointly learn different models orchestrated by a central server with the help of a layer of multiple relays. Since the users need to download different learning models in the downlink transmission, the distributed MTL suffers more severely from the communication bottleneck compared to the single-task learning system. To address this issue, we propose a coded hierarchical MTL scheme that exploits the connection topology and introduces coding techniques to reduce communication l…
We consider a relay network with two relays and a feedback link from the receiver to the sender. To obtain the achievability result, we use compress-and-forward and random binning techniques combined with deterministic binning and restricted decoding. Moreover, we use joint decoding technique to decode the relays' compressed information to achieve a higher rate in the receiver.
Large communication networks, e.g. Internet of Things (IoT), are known to be vulnerable to co-channel interference. One possibility to address this issue is the use of orthogonal multiple access (OMA) techniques. However, due to a potentially very long duty cycle, OMA is not well suited for such schemes. Instead, random medium access (RMA) appears more promising. An RMA scheme is based on transmission of short data packets with random scheduling, which is typically unknown to the receiver. The received signal, which consists of the overlapping packets, can be used for energy harvesting and pow…
In this paper, the physical layer security of a dual-hop underlay uplink cognitive radio network is investigated over Nakagami-m fading channels. Specifically, multiple secondary sources are taking turns in accessing the licensed spectrum of the primary users and communicating with a multiantenna secondary base station D through the aid of a multiantenna relay R in the presence of M eavesdroppers that are also equipped with multiple antennas. Among the remaining nodes, one jammer is randomly selected to transmit an artificial noise to disrupt all the eavesdroppers that are attempting to interc…
We consider a relay network with two relays and two feedback links from the relays to the sender. To obtain the achievability results, we use the compress-and-forward and the decode-and-forward strategies to superimpose facility and cooperation analogue to what proposed by Cover and El Gamal for a relay channel. In addition to random binning, we use deterministic binning to perform restricted decoding. We show how to use the feedback links for cooperation between the sender and the relays to transmit the information which is compressed in the sender and the relays.
This paper considers the joint fronthaul compression and transmit beamforming design for the uplink cloud radio access network (C-RAN), in which multi-antenna user terminals communicate with a cloud-computing based centralized processor (CP) through multi-antenna base-stations (BSs) serving as relay nodes. A compress-and-forward relaying strategy, named the VMAC scheme, is employed, in which the BSs can either perform single-user compression or Wyner-Ziv coding to quantize the received signals and send the quantization bits to the CP via capacity-limited fronthaul links; the CP performs succes…
In this paper, system design for the multi-input multi-output (MIMO) relay broadcast channel with individual signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraints at the mobile stations (MS) is considered. By exploring the structure of downlink (DL) uplink (UL) duality at either the base station (BS) or the relay station (RS), we propose two schemes of joint power allocation and beamforming design at the BS and the RS. The problem of existence of feasible solutions under practical power constraints at the BS and the RS with given SINR targets is considered first. Then the problem of sum p…
In this work, we consider a typical three-node, two-way relaying network (TWRN) over fading channels. The aim is to minimize the entire system energy usage for a TWRN in the long run, while satisfying the required average symmetric exchange rate between the two source nodes. To this end, the energy usage of the physical-layer network coding (PNC) or the superposition coding based digital network coding (SPC-DNC) is analyzed. The rule on selection of both strategies is then derived by comparison. Based on the observed rule, we then design a scheme by switching between PNC and SPC-DNC for each c…
A restricted two-way communication problem in a small fully-connected network is investigated. The network consists of three nodes, all having access to a common channel with half-duplex constraint. Two nodes want to establish a dialog while the third node can assist in the bi-directional transmission process. All nodes have agreed on a transmission protocol a priori and the problem is restricted to the dialog encoders not being allowed to establish a cooperation by the use of previous receive signals. The channel is referred to as the restricted half-duplex two-way relay channel. Here the cha…
In order to accommodate increasing need and offer communication with high performance, both vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications are exploited. The advantages of static nodes and vehicular nodes are combined to achieve an optimal routing scheme. In this paper, we consider the communications between a static node and the vehicular nodes moving in an adjacent area of it. The adjacent area is defined as the zone where a vehicular can communicate with the static node within maximum two hops. We only consider single-hop and two-hop transmissions because these …
We investigate a two-way relay (TWR) fading channel where two source nodes wish to exchange information with the help of a relay node. Given traditional TWR protocols, transmission rates in both directions are known to be limited by the hop with lower capacity, i.e., the min operations between uplink and downlink. In this paper, we propose a new transmission protocol, named as alternative awaiting and broadcast (AAB), to cancel the min operations in the TWR fading channels. The operational principles, new upper bound on ergodic sum-capacity (ESC) and convergence behavior of average delay of si…
In this paper, we consider a three node, two-way relay system with digital network coding over static channels where all link gains are assumed to be constant during transmission. The aim is to minimize total energy consumption while ensuring queue stability at all nodes, for a given pair of random packet arrival rates. Specifically, we allow for a set of transmission modes and solve for the optimal fraction of resources allocated to each mode, including multiaccess uplink transmission mode and network coding broadcasting mode. In addition, for the downlink, we find the condition to determine …
Relay cooperation and integrated microwave and millimeter-wave (mm-wave) dual-band communication are likely to play key roles in 5G. In this paper, we study a two-user uplink scenario in such dual-bands, modeled as a multiple-access relay channel (MARC), where two sources communicate to a destination assisted by a relay. However, unlike the microwave band, transmitters in the mm-wave band must employ highly directional antenna arrays to combat the ill effects of severe path-loss and small wavelength. The resulting mm-wave links are point-to-point and highly directional, and are thus used to co…
The paper treats uplink scenario where M user equipments (UEs) send to a Base Station (BS), possibly via a common Relay Station (RS) that is equipped with a buffer. This is a multiple-access relay channel (MARC) aided by a buffer. We devise a protocol in which the transmission mode is selected adaptively, using the buffer at the RS in order to maximize the average system throughput. We consider the general case in which the RS and the BS can have limits on the maximal number of transmitters that can be received over the multiple access channel. In each slot there are three type possible action…
Two-way relaying can improve spectral efficiency in two-user cooperative communications. It also has great potential in multiuser systems. A major problem of designing a multiuser two-way relay system (MU-TWRS) is transceiver or precoding design to suppress co-channel interference. This paper aims to study linear precoding designs for a cellular MU-TWRS where a multi-antenna base station (BS) conducts bi-directional communications with multiple mobile stations (MSs) via a multi-antenna relay station (RS) with amplify-and-forward relay strategy. The design goal is to optimize uplink performance…
The deterministic capacity of a relay network is the capacity of a network when relays are restricted to transmitting \emph{reliable} information, that is, (asymptotically) deterministic function of the source message. In this paper it is shown that the deterministic capacity of a number of MIMO relay networks can be found in the low power regime where $\SNR\to0$. This is accomplished through deriving single letter upper bounds and finding the limit of these as $\SNR\to0$. The advantage of this technique is that it overcomes the difficulty of finding optimum distributions for mutual informatio…
In this paper, we consider a Gaussian two-way relay channel (GTRC), where two sources exchange messages with each other through a relay. We assume that there is no direct link between sources, and all nodes operate in full-duplex mode. By utilizing nested lattice codes for the uplink (i.e., MAC phase), and structured binning for the downlink (i.e., broadcast phase), we propose two achievable schemes. Scheme 1 is based on compute and forward scheme of [1] while scheme 2 utilizes two different lattices for source nodes based on a three-stage lattice partition chain. We show that scheme 2 can ach…
The K-user flat fading MIMO interference channel with J instantaneous relays (KICJR) is considered. In the KICJR, the effective channel between sources and destinations including the relays has certain structure and is non-generic. For non-generic channels, the achievable degrees of freedom (DoF) is still unknown. Lee and Wang showed that by using the aligned interference neutralization scheme 3/2 degrees of freedom is achievable in a 2IC1R system, which is 50% more than the 2-user interference channel. But the DoF performance and achievable schemes for other KICJR networks are not investigate…
In a heterogeneous wireless cellular network, each user may be covered by multiple access points such as macro/pico/relay/femto base stations (BS). An effective approach to maximize the sum utility (e.g., system throughput) in such a network is to jointly optimize users' linear procoders as well as their base station associations. In this paper we first show that this joint optimization problem is NP-hard and thus is difficult to solve to global optimality. To find a locally optimal solution, we formulate the problem as a noncooperative game in which the users and the BSs both act as players. …
We consider a multi-pair massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay network, where the relay is equipped with a large number, N, of antennas, but driven by a far smaller number, L, of radio frequency (RF) chains. We assume that K pairs of users are scheduled for simultaneous transmission, where K satisfies 2K = L. A hybrid signal processing scheme is presented for both uplink and downlink transmissions of the network. Analytical expressions of both spectral and energy efficiency are derived with respect to the RF chain number under imperfect channel estimation. It is revealed that, un…
This paper studies an uplink multicell joint processing model in which the base-stations are connected to a centralized processing server via rate-limited digital backhaul links. Unlike previous studies where the centralized processor jointly decodes all the source messages from all base-stations, this paper proposes a suboptimal achievability scheme in which the Wyner-Ziv compress-and-forward relaying technique is employed on a per-base-station basis, but successive interference cancellation (SIC) is used at the central processor to mitigate multicell interference. This results in an achievab…
