In this article, we will discuss a Lorentzian sector calculation of the entropy of a minimally coupled scalar field in the Schwarzschild black hole background using the brick wall model of 't Hooft. In the original article, the WKB approximation was used for the modes that are globally stationary. In a previous article, we found that the WKB quantization rule together with a proper counting of the states, leads to a new expression of the scalar field entropy which is not proportional to the area of the horizon. The expression of the entropy is logarithmically divergent in the brick wall cut-off parameter in contrast to an inverse power divergence obtained earlier. In this article, we will consider the entropy for a thin shell of matter field of a given thickness surrounding the black hole horizon. The thickness is chosen to be large compared with the Planck length and is of the order of the atomic scale. When expressed in terms of a covariant cut-off parameter, the entropy of a thin shell of matter field of a given thickness and surrounding the horizon in the Schwarzschild black hole background is given by an expression proportional to the area of the black hole horizon. This leading order divergent term in the cut-off parameter remains to be logarithmically divergent. The logarithmic divergence is expected from the nature of the solution in the near-horizon region. We will find that these discussions are significant in the context of the continuation to the Euclidean sector and the corresponding regularization schemes used to evaluate the thermodynamical properties of matter fields in curved spaces. These are related with the geometric aspects of curved spaces. The above discussions are also important in presence of cosmological event horizon.
In the context of the recently proposed type-II minimally modified gravity theory, i.e. a metric theory of gravity with two local physical degrees of freedom that does not possess an Einstein frame, we study spherically symmetric vacuum solutions to explore the strong gravity regime. Despite the absence of extra degrees of freedom in the gravity sector, the vacuum solutions are locally different from the Schwarzschild or Schwarzschild-(A)dS metric in general and thus the Birkhoff theorem does not hold. The general solutions are parameterized by several free functions of time and admit regular …
We study perturbations of massive and massless vector fields on a Schwarzschild black-hole background, including a non-minimal coupling between the vector field and the curvature. The coupling is given by the Horndeski vector-tensor operator, which we show to be unique, also when the field is massive, provided that the vector has a vanishing background value. We determine the quasi-normal mode spectrum of the vector field, focusing on the fundamental mode of monopolar and dipolar perturbations of both even and odd parity, as a function of the mass of the field and the coupling constant control…
The claim that the microstates of Schwarzschild black holes in perturbative string theory amount to the modes of long folded strings in the vicinity of its horizon is supported by more evidence.

We provide the first example of a geometric transition that resolves the Schwarzschild black hole into a smooth microstructure in eleven-dimensional supergravity on a seven-torus. The geometry is indistinguishable from a Schwarzschild black hole dressed with a scalar field in four dimensions, referred to as a Schwarzschild scalarwall. In eleven dimensions, the scalar field arises as moduli of the torus. The resolution occurs at an infinitesimal scale above the horizon, where it transitions to a smooth bubbling spacetime supported by M2-brane flux.
Two-dimensional Schwarzschild-de Sitter is a convenient spacetime in which to study the effects of horizons on quantum fields since the spacetime contains two horizons, and the wave equation for a massless minimally coupled scalar field can be solved exactly. The two-point correlation function of a massless scalar is computed in the Unruh state. It is found that the field correlations grow linearly in terms of a particular time coordinate that is good in the future development of the past horizons, and that the rate of growth is equal to the sum of the black hole plus cosmological surface grav…
We show that, unlike vacuum General Relativity, Einstein-scalar theories allow balanced static, neutral, asymptotically flat, double-black hole solutions, for scalar field models minimally coupled to gravity, with appropriate self-interactions. These are scalar hairy versions of the double-Schwarzschild (or Bach-Weyl) solution, but regular on and outside the two (topologically spherical) horizons. The balancing repulsive force is provided by the scalar field. An explicit illustration is presented, using a Weyl-type construction adapted to numerical solutions, requiring no partial linearisation…
