It has been suggested by Giddings that the origin of Hawking radiation in black holes is a quantum atmosphere of near-horizon quantum region by investigating both the total emission rate and the stress tensor of Hawking radiation. Revisiting this issue in the exactly soluble model of a dimensionally reduced Schwarzschild black hole, we shall confirm that the dominant Hawking radiation in the Unruh vacuum indeed occurs at the quantum atmosphere, not just at the horizon by exactly calculating the out-temperature responsible for outgoing Hawking particle excitations. Consequently we show that the out-temperature vanishes at the horizon and has a peak at a scale whose radial extent is set by the horizon radius, and then decreases to the Hawking temperature at infinity. We also discuss bounds of location of the peak for the out-temperature in our model.
The critical behavior of black holes in even and odd dimensional spacetimes is studied based on Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) dimensionally continued black holes. In even dimensions it is found that asymptotically flat and anti de-Sitter Reissner-Nordström black holes present up to two second order phase transitions. The case of asymptotically anti-de-Sitter Schwarzschild black holes present only one critical transition and a minimum of temperature, which occurs at the transition. Finally, it is shown that phase transitions are absent in odd dimensions.
Recently, Glass and Krisch have extended the Vaidya radiating metric to include both a radiation fluid and a string fluid [1999 Class. Quantum Grav. vol 16, 1175]. Mass diffusion in the extended Schwarzschild atmosphere was studied. The continuous solutions of classical diffusive transport are believed to describe the envelope of underlying fractal behavior. In this work we examine the classical picture at scales on which fractal behavior might be evident.
We study the dynamics of an Unruh-DeWitt detector interacting with a massless scalar field in an arbitrary static spherically symmetric spacetimes whose metric is characterised by a single metric function $f(r)$. In order to obtain clean physical insights, we employ the derivative coupling variant of the Unruh-DeWitt model in (1+1) dimensions where powerful conformal techniques enable closed-form expressions for the vacuum two-point functions. Due to the generality of the formalism, we will be able to study a very general class of static spherically symmetric (SSS) background. We pick three ex…
One-loop renormalised quantum effective action for gravity contains quadratic in curvature terms. We have found an approximate analytic black hole solution in quadratic gravity by keeping only the radial spherically symmetric fluctuations and dimensionally reducing the 4-dimensional (4D) theory down to the 2-dimensional (2D) dilaton gravity with a potential. The solution reduces to the Schwarzschild black hole in the limit of Einstein's gravity, but otherwise admits non-negative Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) and positive quasi-local Misner-Sharp masses that can differ significantly. We then stud…
It has recently been suggested [S. B. Giddings, Phys. Lett. B {\bf 754}, 39 (2016)] that the Hawking black-hole radiation spectrum originates from an effective quantum "atmosphere" which extends well outside the black-hole horizon. In particular, comparing the Hawking radiation power of a $(3+1)$-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole of horizon radius $r_{\text{H}}$ with the familiar Stefan-Boltzmann radiation power of a $(3+1)$-dimensional flat space perfect blackbody emitter, Giddings concluded that the source of the Hawking semi-classical black-hole radiation is a quantum region outside the …
We develop some classical descriptions for processes in the Schwarzschild string atmosphere. These processes suggest relationships between macroscopic and microscopic scales. The classical descriptions developed in this essay highlight the fundamental quantum nature of the Schwarzschild atmospheric processes.
Dimensional scales are examined in an extended 3+1 Vaidya atmosphere surrounding a Schwarzschild source. At one scale, the Vaidya null fluid vanishes and the spacetime contains only a single spherical 2-surface. Both of these behaviors can be addressed by including higher dimensions in the spacetime metric.
We consider static spherically symmetric Lovelock black holes and generalize the dimensionally continued black holes in such a way that they asymptotically for large r go over to the d-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole in dS/AdS spacetime. This means that the master algebraic polynomial is not degenerate but instead its derivative is degenerate. This family of solutions contains an interesting class of pure Lovelock black holes which are the Nth order Lovelock Λ-vacuum solu- tions having the remarkable property that their thermodynamical parameters have the universal character in terms of t…
The many low energy modes near a black hole horizon give the thermal atmosphere a divergent entropy which becomes of order $A/4G$ with a Planck scale cut-off. However, Sorkin has given a Newtonian argument for 3+1 Schwarzschild black holes to the effect that fluctuations of such modes provide the horizon with a non-zero quantum mechanical width. This width then effectively enforces a cut-off at much larger distances so that the entropy of the thermal atmosphere is negligible in comparison with $A/4G$ for large black holes. We generalize and improve this result by giving a relativistic argument…
A study is presented for the non linear evolution of a self gravitating distribution of matter coupled to a massless scalar field. The characteristic formulation for numerical relativity is used to follow the evolution by a sequence of light cones open to the future. Bondian frames are used to endow physical meaning to the matter variables and to the massless scalar field. Asymptotic approaches to the origin and to infinity are achieved; at the boundary surface interior and exterior solutions are matched guaranteeing the Darmois--Lichnerowicz conditions. To show how the scheme works some numer…
We describe a thermal atmosphere around a black hole as vacuum excitations near to gravitational radius of a contracting thin black shell, i.e., in terms of properties of the physical vacuum of fields around a thin shell of mass $M$ collapsing from infinity to the Schwarzschild radius according to an external stationary observer. A natural explanation is introduced for the necessary cutoff using the equations of motion of the shells. We make a thermodynamic description of a fermionic field near the gravitational radius. Then a solution to the species problem for two fields, scalar one and spin…
A Schrödinger-picture description of the evolving quantum state of Hawking radiation is given, based on an ADM decomposition using time slicings that smoothly cross the horizon. This treatment avoids requiring a role for trans-planckian modes, which can be viewed as artifacts of Hawking's original calculation, and also supports arguments that radiation from black holes is produced in a "quantum atmosphere" with thickness comparable to the horizon size, rather than microscopically far from it. Particularly explicit formulas are given for the two-dimensional analog of the Schwarzschild geometry.…

The Hawking radiation emits all species of particles, but the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy is independent of the number of the species of particles. This is the so-called species problem --- a puzzling problem for a long time. In this paper, we suggest a solution to this problem. A result of the scheme is that the black hole atmosphere has a mass equaling 3/8 mass of a classical Schwarzschild black hole, which agrees with 't Hooft's brick wall model.
We investigate, within the framework of Quantum Field Theory in curved space, the correlations across the horizon of a black hole in order to highlight the particle-partner pair creation mechanism at the origin of Hawking radiation. The analysis concerns both acoustic black holes, formed by Bose-Einstein condensates, and gravitational black holes. More precisely, we have considered a typical acoustic black hole metric with two asymptotic homogeneous regions and the Schwarzschild metric as describing a gravitational black hole. By considering equal time correlation functions, we find a striking…
A study of the high angular momentum particles 'atmosphere' near the Schwarzschild black hole horizon suggested that strong gravitational interactions occur at invariant distance of the order of $\sqrt[3]{M}$ (A. Casher et. al). We present a generalization of this result to the Kerr-Newman black hole case. It is shown that the larger charge and angular momentum black hole bears, the larger invariant distance at which strong gravitational interactions occur becomes. This invariant distance is of order $\sqrt[3]{r_+^2/\hh}.$ This implies, that the Planckian structure of the Hawking radiation of …
We give a general description of the evolving quantum state of a Schwarzschild black hole, in the quantum field theory approximation. Such a time-dependent description is based on introducing a choice of time slices. We in particular consider slices that smoothly cross the horizon, and introduction of "stationary" such slices simplifies the analysis. This analysis goes beyond standard derivations of Hawking radiation that focus on asymptotic excitations, and in particular gives an evolving state that is regular at the horizon, with no explicit transplanckian dependence, and that can in princip…
While most of the singularities of General Relativity are expected to be safely hidden behind event horizons by the cosmic censorship conjecture, we happen to live in the causal future of the classical big bang singularity, whose resolution constitutes the active field of early universe cosmology. Could the big bang be also hidden behind a causal horizon, making us immune to the decadent impacts of a naked singularity? We describe a braneworld description of cosmology with both 4d induced and 5d bulk gravity (otherwise known as Dvali-Gabadadze-Porati, or DGP model), which exhibits this feature…
