The paper deals with the extension of the Weak Isolated Horizon (WIH) formulation to the non- minimally coupled Holst action. In the first part of the paper, we introduce the non- minimal scalar coupling of the Holst action and construct the covariant phase space of the theory. Using the covariant phase space, we prove the laws of black hole mechanics and show that with a gauge fixing, the symplectic structure on the horizon reduces to that of a U(1) Chern-Simons theory. The level of the Chern- Simons theory is shown to depend on the non-minimally coupled scalar field.
Holst action containing Immirzi parameter for pure gravity is generalised to the supergravity theories. Supergravity equations of motion are not modified by such generalisations, thus preserving supersymmetry. Dependence on the Immirzi parameter does not emerge in the classical equations of motion. This is in contrast with the recent observation of Perez and Rovelli for gravity action containing original Holst term and a minimally coupled Dirac fermion where the classical equations of motion do develop a dependence on Immirzi parameter.
The action of loop quantum gravity includes the Holst term and/or the Nieh-Yan term in addition to the Ricci scalar. These terms are expected to couple non-minimally to the Higgs. Thus the Holst and Nieh-Yan terms contribute to the classical equations of motion, and they can have a significant impact on inflation. We derive inflationary predictions in the parameter space of the non-minimal couplings, including non-minimally coupled terms up to dimension 4. Successful inflation is possible even with zero or negative coupling of the Ricci scalar. Notably, inflation supported by the non-minimally…
We report three manifestly Lorentz-invariant Hamiltonian formulations of minimally and nonminimally coupled fermion fields to the Holst action. These formulations are achieved by making a suitable parametrization of both the tetrad and the Lorentz connection, which allows us to integrate out some auxiliary fields without spoiling the local Lorentz symmetry. They have the peculiarity that their noncanonical symplectic structures as well as the phase-space variables for the gravitational sector are real. Moreover, two of these Hamiltonian formulations involve half-densitized fermion fields. We a…
The formulation of Weak Isolated Horizons (WIH) based on the Isolated Horizon formulation of black hole horizons is reconsidered. The first part of the paper deals with the derivation of laws of mechanics of a WIH. While the zeroth law follows from the WIH boundary conditions, first law depends on the action chosen. We construct the covariant phase space for a spacetime having an WIH as inner boundary for the Holst action. This requires the introduction of new potential functions so that the symplectic structure is foliation independent. We show that a precise cancellation among various terms …
We show that the asymptotically flat hairy black holes, solutions of the Einstein field equations minimally coupled to a scalar field, previously discovered by one of us, present mode instability against linear radial perturbations. It is also shown that the number of unstable modes is finite and their frequencies can be made arbitrarily small.
The Barbero-Immirzi (BI) parameter is promoted to a field and a canonical analysis is performed when it is coupled with a Nieh-Yan topological invariant. It is shown that, in the effective theory, the BI field is a canonical pseudoscalar minimally coupled with gravity. This framework is argued to be more natural than the one of the usual Holst action. Potential consequences in relation with inflation and the quantum theory are briefly discussed.
The isolated horizon framework is extended to include non-minimally coupled scalar fields. As expected from the analysis based on Killing horizons, entropy is no longer given just by (a quarter of) the horizon area but also depends on the scalar field. In a subsequent paper these results will serve as a point of departure for a statistical mechanical derivation of entropy using quantum geometry.
It was showed by Perez and Rovelli in 2006 that the Holst action in gravity with torsion with massless and minimally coupling Dirac fermions gives rise to the four-fermion coupling term, whose coefficient is a function of the Barbero-Immirzi (BI) parameter. This parameter is present in the Holst action, which is an object of investigation in a non-perturbative formalism of quantum gravity. The key feature is the torsion because its absence implies no effect from Holst term in dynamical equations. In this paper we consider a spin fluid (also called Weyssenhoff fluid), which is a perfect fluid t…
By using the 't Hooft "brick wall" model and the Pauli-Villars regularization scheme we calculate the statistical-mechanical entropy arising from the minimally coupled scalar fields which rotate with the azimuthal angular velocity $Ω_0=Ω_H$ ($Ω_H$ is the angular velocity of the black hole horizon) in the general four-dimensional non-extreme stationary axisymmetric black hole space-time. We also show, for the Kerr-Newman and the Einstein-Maxwell dilaton-axion black holes, that the statistical-mechanical entropy obtained from our derivation and the quantum thermodynamical entropy by the conical …
Three families of exact solutions for 2-dimensional gravity minimally coupled to electrodynamics are obtained in the context of ${\cal R}=T$ theory. It is shown, by supersymmetric formalism of quantum mechanics, that the quantum dynamics of a neutral bosonic particle on static backgrounds with both varying curvature and electric field is exactly solvable.
Recent works showing that homogeneous and isotropic cosmologies involving scalar fields correspond to geodesics of certain augmented spaces are generalized to the non-minimal coupling case. As the Maupertuis-Jacobi principle in classical mechanics, this result allows us, in principle, to infer some of the dynamical properties of the cosmologies from the geometry of the associated augmented spaces.
In $n$-dimensional spacetimes ($n>3$), there exists an internal gauge symmetry of the Palatini action with a cosmological constant that is the natural generalization of the so-called "local translations" of three-dimensional general relativity. We report the extension of this symmetry to include the minimal coupling of Yang-Mills and fermion fields to the Palatini action with a cosmological constant. We show that, as in the case of three-dimensional local translations, the extended symmetry depends on the energy-momentum tensor of the corresponding matter field and, for fermions, it contains a…
We consider gravity theory with varying speed of light and varying gravitational constant. Both constants are represented by non-minimally coupled scalar fields. We examine the cosmological evolution in the near curvature singularity regime. We find that at the curvature singularity the speed of light goes to infinity while the gravitational constant vanishes. This corresponds to the Newton's Mechanics limit represented by one of the vertex of the Bronshtein-Zelmanov-Okun cube. The cosmological evolution includes both the pre-big-bang and post-big-bang phases separated by the curvature singula…
In the general framework of Metric-Affine theories of gravity, where the metric and the connection are independent variables, we consider actions quadratic in the Ricci scalar curvature and the Holst invariant (the contraction of the Riemann curvature with the Levi-Civita antisymmetric tensor) coupled non-minimally to a scalar field. We study the profile of the equivalent effective metric theory, featuring an extra dynamical pseudoscalar degree of freedom, and show that it reduces to an effective single-field inflationary model. We analyze in detail the inflationary predictions and find that t…
In this paper, we develop an effective quantum theory of black hole horizons using only the local horizon geometry. On the covariant phase space of the Holst action admitting Weak Isolated Horizon as an inner boundary, we construct Hamiltonian charges corresponding to Lorentz symmetries. We show that horizon area is the Hamiltonian charge corresponding to Lorentz boosts as well as that for Lorentz rotation which acts on $2$-sphere cross-sections of the horizon. Using this expression of area as a generator of Lorentz rotation, and the fact that quantum states residing on the horizon cross-secti…
We consider cosmological solution for Einstein gravity with massive fermions with a four-fermion coupling, which emerges from the Holst action and is related to the Barbero-Immirzi (BI) parameter. This gravitational action is an important object of investigation in a non-perturbative formalism of quantum gravity. We study the equation of motion for for the Dirac field within the standard Friedman-Robertson-Walker (FRW) metric. Finally, we show the theory with BI parameter and minimally coupling Dirac field, in the zero mass limit, is equivalent to an additional term which looks like a perfect …
In this paper we consider a third quantized cosmological model with varying speed of light $c$ and varying gravitational constant $G$ both represented by non-minimally coupled scalar fields. The third quantization of such a model leads to a scenario of the doubleverse with the two components being quantum mechanically entangled. We calculate the two parameters describing the entanglement, namely: the energy and the entropy of entanglement where the latter appears to be a proper measure of the entanglement. We consider a possibility that the entanglement can manifests itself as an effective per…
We generalize a class of magnetically charged black holes holes non-minimally coupled to two scalar fields previously found by one of us [gr-qc/9910041] to the case of multiple scalar fields. The black holes possess a novel type of primary scalar hair, which we call a contingent primary hair: although the solutions possess degrees of freedom which are not completely determined by the other charges of the theory, the charges necessarily vanish in the absence of the magnetic monopole. Only one constraint relates the black hole mass to the magnetic charge and scalar charges of the theory. We obta…
We give a systematic treatment of the quantum mechanics of a spin zero particle in a combined electromagnetic field and a weak gravitational field, which is produced by a slow moving matter source. The analysis is based on the Klein-Gordon equation expressed in generally covariant form and coupled minimally to the electromagnetic field. The Klein-Gordon equation is recast into Schroedinger equation form (SEF), which we then analyze in the non-relativistic limit. We include a discussion of some rather general observable physical effects implied by the SEF, concentrating on gravitomagnetism. Of …
The imposition of boundary conditions upon a quantized field can lead to singular energy densities on the boundary. We treat the boundaries as quantum mechanical objects with a nonzero position uncertainty, and show that the singular energy density is removed. This treatment also resolves a long standing paradox concerning the total energy of the minimally coupled and conformally coupled scalar fields.
In this article, we study the no-boundary wave function in scalar-tensor gravity with various potentials for the non-minimally coupled scalar field. Our goal is to calculate probabilities for the scalar field - and hence the effective gravitational coupling and cosmological constant - to take specific values. Most calculations are done in the minisuperspace approximation, and we use a saddle point approximation for the Euclidean action, which is then evaluated numerically. We find that for potentials that have several minima, none of them is substantially preferred by the quantum mechanical pr…
We investigate the Universe at the late stage of its evolution and inside the cell of uniformity 150-370 Mpc. We consider the Universe to be filled at these scales with dust like matter, a minimally coupled Galileon field and radiation. We use the mechanical approach. Therefore, the peculiar velocities of the inhomogeneities as well as the fluctuations of the other perfect fluids can be considered nonrelativistic. Such fluids are said to be coupled because they are concentrated around the inhomogeneities. We investigate the conditions under which the physical Galileon field, i.e. compatible wi…
We give a systematic treatment of a spin 1/2 particle in a combined electromagnetic field and a weak gravitational field that is produced by a slowly moving matter source. This paper continues previous work on a spin zero particle, but it is largely self-contained and may serve as an introduction to spinors in a Riemann space. The analysis is based on the Dirac equation expressed in generally covariant form and coupled minimally to the electromagnetic field. The restriction to a slowly moving matter source, such as the earth, allows us to describe the gravitational field by a gravitoelectric (…
We study a complex Dirac field in the chiral representation minimally coupled to gravity in 3+1 dimensions in the context of Einstein-Cartan theory. Generically the matter content gravitates in two different ways: On the one hand, the energy-momentum induces spacetime curvature; on the other hand, the presence of spin acts as a source for the spacetime torsion, which does not propagate. In this setup we consider the most general stationary spherically symmetric ansatz and we find an analytic black hole solution that supports a nontrivial spinor configuration. The spinor field affects the geome…
Combining elements of twistor-space, phase space and Clifford algebras, we propose a framework for the construction and quantization of certain (quadric) varieties described by Lorentz-covariant multivector coordiantes. The correspondent multivectors can be parametrized by second order polynomials in the phase space. Thus the multivectors play a double role, as covariant objects in $D=2,3,4 \texttt{ Mod } 8$ space-time dimensions, and as mechanical observables of a non-relativistic system in $2^{[D/2]-1}$ euclidean dimensions. The latter attribute permits a dual interpretation of concepts of n…
Recently, there has been quite a lot of interest in static, spherical wormhole spacetimes and the question of their stability with respect to time-dependent perturbations. The consideration of linearized perturbations usually leads to a master wave equation with effective potential which can then be analyzed using standard tools from quantum mechanics. However, in the wormhole case, particular care must be taken with the gauge conditions when formulating the master equation. A poor coordinate choice, based for example on fixing the areal radial coordinate, may lead to singularities at the thro…
In this paper, we consider the Universe at the late stage of its evolution and deep inside the cell of uniformity. At these scales, we consider the Universe to be filled with dust-like matter in the form of discretely distributed galaxies, a minimally coupled scalar field and radiation as matter sources. We investigate such a Universe in the mechanical approach. This means that the peculiar velocities of the inhomogeneities (in the form of galaxies) as well as fluctuations of other perfect fluids are non-relativistic. Such fluids are designated as coupled because they are concentrated around i…
We derive an explicit manifestly covariant expression for the most general positive-definite and Lorentz-invariant inner product on the space of solutions of the Klein-Gordon equation. This expression involves a one-parameter family of conserved current densities J_a^μ, with a\in(-1,1), that are analogous to the chiral current density for spin half fields. The conservation of J_a^μis related to a global gauge symmetry of the Klein-Gordon fields whose gauge group is U(1) for rational a and the multiplicative group of positive real numbers for irrational a. We show that the associated gauge symm…
The four laws of black hole mechanics have been put forward for a long time. However, the zeroth law, which states that the surface gravity of a stationary black hole is a constant on the event horizon, still lacks universal proof in various modified gravitational theories. In this paper, we study the zeroth law {in a special Horndeski gravity}, which is an interesting gravitational theory with a nonminimally coupled scalar field. After assuming that {the nonminimally coupled scalar field has the same symmetries with the spacetime,} the minimally coupled matter fields satisfy the dominant ener…
This is the second of the two related papers analysing origins and possible explanations of a paradoxical phenomenon of the quantum potential (QP). It arises in quantum mechanics'(QM) of a particle in the Riemannian $n$-dimensional configurational space obtained by various procedures of quantization of the non-relativistic natural Hamilton systems. Now, the two questions are investigated: 1)Does QP appear in the non-relativistic QM generated by the quantum theory of scalar field (QFT) non-minimally coupled to the space-time metric? 2)To which extent is it in accord with quantization of the nat…
Here we examine the quantum-mechanical decay of a Schwarzschild-like black hole, formed by gravitational collapse, into almost-flat space-time and weak radiation at a very late time, in order to evaluate quantum amplitudes (not just probabilities) for final states. No information is lost in collapse to a black hole. Boundary data are specified on initial and final hypersurfaces $Σ_{I, F}$, separated by a Lorentzian proper-time interval $T$, as measured at spatial infinity. For simplicity, consider Einstein gravity coupled minimally to a massless scalar field $ϕ$. In Lorentzian signature, the c…
We study chaotic inflation driven by a real, massive, homogeneous minimally coupled scalar field in a flat Robertson-Walker spacetime. The semiclassical limit for gravity is considered, whereas the scalar field is treated quantum mechanically by the technique of invariants in order to also investigate the dynamics of the system for non-classical states of the latter. An inflationary stage is found to be possible for a large set of initial quantum states, obviously including the coherent ones. States associated with a vanishing mean value of the field (such as the vacuum and the thermal) can al…
The entanglement entropy is a fundamental quantity which characterizes the correlations between sub-systems in a larger quantum-mechanical system. For two sub-systems separated by a surface the entanglement entropy is proportional to the area of the surface and depends on the UV cutoff which regulates the short-distance correlations. The geometrical nature of the entanglement entropy calculation is particularly intriguing when applied to black holes when the entangling surface is the black hole horizon. I review a variety of aspects of this calculation: the useful mathematical tools such as th…
We obtain a novel exact analytical solution to Einstein-Maxwell-scalar gravity with negative cosmological constant in (2+1)-dimensions. The scalar field is minimally coupled to gravity and electromagnetism by the metric ansatz. On the one hand, we first find analytical results for the real part of quasinormal mode spectrum of a rotating hairy Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole by solving the associated Dirac equation through the pseudo-Hermitian quantum mechanical tools within the framework of discrete-basis-set method. We then show that, in the spinless case, these quasinormal modes …
