We employed a recently developed semi-empirical Zr potential to determine the diffusivities in the hcp and bcc Zr via molecular dynamics simulation. The point defect concentration was determined directly from MD simulation rather than from theoretical methods using T=0 calculations. We found that the diffusion proceeds via the interstitial mechanism in the hcp Zr and both the vacancy and interstitial mechanisms give contribution in diffusivity in the bcc Zr. The agreement with the experimental data is excellent for the hcp Zr and for the bcc Zr it is rather good at high temperatures but there is a considerable disagreement at low temperatures.
Ab-initio molecular dynamics simulation of hydrogen diffusion in $α$-iron
采用第一性原理原子分子动力学模拟,在微正则系综和正则系综下研究了间隙氢在$α$ -铁中的扩散。$θ=1/16 and 1/2 have been considered by locating interstitial hydrogen atoms at random positions in a $ 2 \times 2 \times 2$超晶胞之间的氢与铁比率。我们发现,平均最佳吸收位置和扩散势垒依赖于interestial的浓度。铁的德拜温度随间隙氢浓度的增加而单调下降,证明了大量扩散氢原子的存在显著削弱了铁-铁原子间相互作用势。
We have performed quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) experiments up to 1243 K and ab-initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations to investigate the Na diffusion in various phases of NaAlSiO4 (NASO), namely, low-carnegieite (L-NASO; trigonal), high-carnegieite (H-NASO; cubic) and nepheline (N-NASO; hexagonal) phases. The QENS measurements reveal Na ions localized diffusion behavior in L-NASO and N-NASO, but long-range diffusion behavior in H-NASO. The AIMD simulation supplemented the QENS measurements and showed that excess Na ions in H-NASO enhance the host network flexibility and activat…
We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of the self-diffusion of ammonia on exfoliated graphite. Using neutron time-of-flight spectroscopy we are able to resolve the ultrafast diffusion process of adsorbed ammonia, NH$_3$, on graphite. Together with van der Waals corrected density functional theory calculations we show that the diffusion of NH$_3$ follows a hopping motion on a weakly corrugated potential energy surface with an activation energy of about 4 meV which is particularly low for this type of diffusive motion. The hopping motion includes further a significant number o…
Using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) to grow multi-elemental oxides (MEO) is generally challenging, partly due to difficulty in stoichiometry control. Occasionally, if one of the elements is volatile at the growth temperature, stoichiometry control can be greatly simplified using adsorption-controlled growth mode. Otherwise, stoichiometry control remains one of the main hurdles to achieving high quality MEO film growths. Here, we report another kind of self-limited growth mode, dubbed diffusion-assisted epitaxy, in which excess species diffuses into the substrate and leads to the desired stoichi…
We used classical and accelerated molecular dynamics simulations to characterize vacancy-mediated diffusion of cations in Gd$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ pyrochlore as a function of the disorder on the microsecond timescale. We find that cation vacancy diffusion is slow in materials with low levels of disorder. However, higher levels of disorder allow for fast cation diffusion, which is then also accompanied by fast antisite annihilation and ordering of the cations. The cation diffusivity is therefore not constant, but decreases as the material reorders. The results suggest that fast cation diffusion is tri…
The use of solid-state electrolytes to provide safer, next-generation rechargeable batteries is becoming more feasible as new materials with greater stability and higher ionic diffusion coefficients are designed. However, accurate determination of diffusion coefficients in solids is problematic and reliable calculations are highly sought-after. In this paper we compare diffusion coefficients calculated using nonequilibrium and equilibrium ab initio molecular dynamics simulations for highly diffusive solid-state electrolytes for the first time, to demonstrate the accuracy that can be obtained. …
Lattice diffusion and surface segregation of B during growth of SiGe heterostructures by molecular beam epitaxy: effect of Ge concentration and biaxial stress
Self-diffusion parameters in stoichiometric B2-NiAl solid state crystals were estimated by molecular statics/dynamics simulations with the study of required simulation time to stabilise diffusivity results. An extrapolation procedure to improve the diffusion simulation results was proposed. Calculations of volume diffusivity for the B2 type NiAl in the 1224 K to 1699 K temperature range were performed using the embedded atom model potential. The results obtained here are in much better agreement with the experimental results than the theoretical estimates obtained with other methods.
We have performed Kinetic Monte Carlo simulation work to study the effect of diffusion anisotropy, bonding anisotropy and edge diffusion on island formation at different temperatures during the sub-monolayer film growth in Molecular Beam Epitaxy. We use simple cubic solid on solid model and event based Bortz, Kalos and Labowitch (BKL) algorithm on the Kinetic Monte Carlo method to simulate the physical phenomena. We have found that the island morphology and growth exponent are found to be influenced by substrate anisotropy as well as edge diffusion, however they do not play a significant role …
We survey the phase diagram of high-pressure molecular hydrogen with path integral molecular dynamics using a machine-learned interatomic potential trained with Quantum Monte Carlo forces and energies. Besides the HCP and C2/c-24 phases, we find two new stable phases both with molecular centers in the Fmmm-4 structure, separated by a molecular orientation transition with temperature. The high temperature isotropic Fmmm-4 phase has a reentrant melting line with a maximum at higher temperature (1450K at 150GPa) than previously estimated and crosses the liquid-liquid transition line around 1200K …
Crystallization kinetics has features that are universal and independent of the type of crystallized system. The possibility of using scaling relations to describe the temperature dependences of the surface self-diffusion coefficient $D_s$, which is one of the key characteristics of crystallization kinetics, has been demonstrated in application to various crystallized molecular glasses. It has been shown that the surface self-diffusion coefficient $D_s$ as a function of the dimensionless temperature is reproduced by a power law and is universally scaled for all considered systems. The analysis…
