We study the interaction of dark-bright solitons in two component Bose-Einstein condensates by suitably tailoring the trap potential, atomic scattering length and atom gain or loss. We show that the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation can be mapped onto the Manakov model. An interesting class of matter wave solitons and their interaction are identified with time independent and periodically modulated trap potentials, which can be experimentally realized in two component condensates. These include periodic collapse and revival of solitons, and snake-like matter wave solitons as well as different kinds of two soliton interactions.
We investigate the dynamics of bright matter wave solitons in spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates with time modulated nonlinearities. We obtain soliton solutions of an integrable autonomous three-coupled Gross-Pitaevskii (3-GP) equations using Hirota's method involving a non-standard bilinearization. The similarity transformations are developed to construct the soliton solutions of non-autonomous 3-GP system. The non-autonomous solitons admit different density profiles. An interesting phenomenon of soliton compression is identified for kink-like nonlinearity coefficient with Hermite-Gaussian-like…
We demonstrate, through numerical simulations, the controllable emission of matter-wave bursts from a Bose-Einstein Condensate in a shallow optical dipole trap. The process is triggered by spatial variations of the scattering length along the trapping axis. In our approach, the outcoupling mechanism are atom-atom interactions and thus, the trap remains unaltered. Once emitted, the matter wave forms a robust soliton. We calculate analytically the parameters for the experimental implementation of this atomic soliton machine gun.
Stability of dark solitons generated by a supersonic flow of Bose-Einstein condensate past an obstacle is investigated. It is shown that in the reference frame attached to the obstacle a transition occurs at some critical value of the flow velocity from absolute instability of dark solitons to their convective instability. This leads to decay of disturbances of solitons at fixed distance from the obstacle and formation of effectively stable dark solitons. This phenomenon explains surprising stability of the flow picture that has been observed in numerical simulations.
We suggest an efficient method for generating matter-wave gap solitons in a repulsive Bose-Einstein condensate, when the gap soliton is formed from a condensate cloud in a harmonic trap after turning on a one-dimensional optical lattice. We demonstrate numerically that this approach does not require preparing the initial atomic wave packet in a specific state corresponding to the edge of the Brillouin zone of the spectrum, and losses that occur during the soliton generation process can be suppressed by an appropriate adiabatic switching of the optical lattice.
We study a ultra-cold and dilute superfluid Bose-Fermi mixture confined in a strictly one-dimensional atomic waveguide by using a set of coupled nonlinear mean-field equations obtained from the Lieb-Liniger energy density for bosons and the Gaudin-Yang energy density for fermions. We consider a finite Bose-Fermi inter-atomic strength g_{bf} and both periodic and open boundary conditions. We find that with periodic boundary conditions, i.e. in a quasi-1D ring, a uniform Bose-Fermi mixture is stable only with a large fermionic density. We predict that at small fermionic densities the ground stat…
We use the time-dependent mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii equation to study the formation of a dynamically-stabilized dissipation-managed bright soliton in a quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). Because of three-body recombination of bosonic atoms to molecules, atoms are lost (dissipated) from a BEC. Such dissipation leads to the decay of a BEC soliton. We demonstrate by a perturbation procedure that an alimentation of atoms from an external source to the BEC may compensate for the dissipation loss and lead to a dynamically-stabilized soliton. The result of the analytical perturba…
We consider the propagation of a dark soliton in a quasi 1D Bose-Einstein condensate in presence of a random potential. This configuration involves nonlinear effects and disorder, and we argue that, contrarily to the study of stationary transmission coefficients through a nonlinear disordered slab, it is a well defined problem. It is found that a dark soliton decays algebraically, over a characteristic length which is independent of its initial velocity, and much larger than both the healing length and the 1D scattering length of the system. We also determine the characteristic decay time.
Using the variational approximation and numerical simulations, we study one-dimensional gap solitons in a binary Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in an optical-lattice potential. We consider the case of inter-species repulsion, while the intra-species interaction may be either repulsive or attractive. Several types of gap solitons are found: symmetric or asymmetric; unsplit or split, if centers of the components coincide or separate; intra-gap (with both chemical potentials falling into a single bandgap) or inter-gap, otherwise. In the case of the intra-species attraction, a smooth transition …
Using variational and numerical solutions of the mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii equation we show that a bright soliton can be stabilized in a trapless three-dimensional attractive Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) by a rapid periodic temporal modulation of scattering length alone by using a Feshbach resonance. This scheme also stabilizes a rotating vortex soliton in two dimensions. Apart from possible experimental application in BEC, the present study suggests that the spatiotemporal solitons of nonlinear optics in three dimensions can also be stabilized in a layered Kerr medium with sign-changing n…
We demonstrate the formation of bright solitons in coupled defocusing nonlinear Schroedinger (NLS) equation supported by attractive coupling. As an application we use a time-dependent dynamical mean-field model to study the formation of stable bright solitons in two-component repulsive Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) supported by interspecies attraction in a quasi one-dimensional geometry. When all interactions are repulsive, there cannot be bright solitons. However, bright solitons can be formed in two-component repulsive BECs for a sufficiently attractive interspecies interaction, which ind…
We study the magnetic soliton dynamics of spinor Bose-Einstein condensates in an optical lattice which results in an effective Hamiltonian of anisotropic pseudospin chain. A modified Landau-Lifshitz equation is derived and exact magnetic soliton solutions are obtained analytically. Our results show that the time-oscillation of the soliton size can be controlled in practical experiment by adjusting of the light-induced dipole-dipole interaction. Moreover, the elastic collision of two solitons is investigated.
We show that it is possible to observe matter wave interference patterns in the collision of bright solitons (Bose Einstein condensates) without free ballistic expansion for suitable choices of scattering length and time dependent trap.
We study the magnetic soliton dynamics of spinor Bose-Einstein condensates in an optical lattice which results in an effective Hamiltonian of anisotropic pseudospin chain. An equation of nonlinear Schrödinger type is derived and exact magnetic soliton solutions are obtained analytically by means of Hirota method. Our results show that the critical external field is needed for creating the magnetic soliton in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates. The soliton size, velocity and shape frequency can be controlled in practical experiment by adjusting the magnetic field. Moreover, the elastic collision …
Under a unified theory we investigate the formation of various types of vector-solitons in two-species Bose-Einstein condensates with arbitrary scattering lengths. We then show that by tuning the interaction parameter via Feshbach resonance, transformation between different types of vector solitons is possible. Our results open up new ways in the quantum control of multi-species Bose-Einstein condensates.
Starting with a Gaussian variational ansatz, we predict anisotropic bright solitons in quasi-2D Bose-Einstein condensates consisting of atoms with dipole moments polarized \emph{perpendicular} to the confinement direction. Unlike isotropic solitons predicted for the moments aligned with the confinement axis [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{95}, 200404 (2005)], no sign reversal of the dipole-dipole interaction is necessary to support the solitons. Direct 3D simulations confirm their stability.
We show that bright solitons exist in quasi-one dimensional heteronuclear multicomponent Bose-Einstein condensates with repulsive self-interaction and attractive inter-species interaction. They are remarkably robust to perturbations of initial data and collisions and can be generated by the mechanism of modulational instability. Some possibilities for control and the behavior of the system in three dimensions are also discussed.
We show that a Bose-Einstein condensate and a portion of its surrounding thermal cloud can exhibit mutual self-trapping, supported by the attractive particle interactions, and not by the external confinement. This type of dynamics is characteristic of composite random-phase solitons.
The small oscillations of solitons in 2D Bose-Einstein condensates are investigated by solving the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation which is valid when the velocity of the soliton approaches the speed of sound. We show that the soliton is stable and that the lowest excited states obey the same dispersion law as the one of the stable branch of excitations of a 1D gray soliton in a 2D condensate. The role of these states in thermodynamics is discussed.
A dark soliton oscillating in an elongated harmonically-confined atomic Bose-Einstein condensate continuously exchanges energy with the sound field. Periodic optical `paddles' are employed to controllably enhance the sound density and transfer energy to the soliton, analogous to parametric driving. In the absence of damping, the amplitude of the soliton oscillations can be dramatically reduced, whereas with damping, a driven soliton equilibrates as a stable dark soliton with lower energy, thereby extending the soliton lifetime up to the lifetime of the condensate.
We study the recent observation of formation of matter-wave soliton trains in Bose-Einstein condensates. We emphasize the role of the box-like confinement of the Bose-Einstein condensate and find that there exist time intervals for the opening the box that support the generation of real solitons. When the box-like potential is switched off outside the existing time windows, the number of peaks in a train changes resembling missing solitons observed in the experiment. Our findings indicate that a new way of generating soliton trains in condensates through the temporal, matter-wave Talbot effect…
We study numerically the outcome of the phase separation instability of a dual-species Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice. When only one excitation mode is unstable a bound pair of a bright and dark soliton-like structures periodically appears and disappears, whereas for more than one unstable mode a persistent soliton-antisoliton pair develops. The oscillating soliton represents a regime where the two-species condensate neither remains phase-separated nor is dynamically stable.
The dynamical stability of dark solitons in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates is studied. For standard short-range interacting condensates dark solitons are unstable against transverse excitations in two and three dimensions. On the contrary, due to its non local character, the dipolar interaction allows for stable 3D stationary dark solitons, opening a qualitatively novel scenario in nonlinear atom optics. We discuss in detail the conditions to achieve this stability, which demand the use of an additional optical lattice, and the stability regimes.
We elaborate on a general method to find complex envelope solitons in a cigar shaped Bose-Einstein condensate in a trap. The procedure incorporates time dependent scattering length, oscillator frequency and loss/gain. A variety of time dependencies of the above parameters, akin to the ones occurring in the experiments can be tackled.
We analyze the physics of bright solitons in two-dimensional dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates. These solitons are not possible in short-range interacting gases. In particular, we discuss the necessary conditions for the existence of stable 2D bright solitary waves. The stability of the solutions is studied by means of the analysis of lowest-lying excitations. Additionally, we study the scattering of solitary waves, which contrary to the contact-interacting case, is inelastic, and could lead to fusion of solitary waves. Finally, the experimental possibilities for observability are discussed.
We analyze the scattering of bright solitons in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates placed in unconnected layers. Whereas for short-range interactions unconnected layers are independent, a remarkable consequence of the dipole interaction is the appearance of novel nonlocal interlayer effects. In particular, we show that the interlayer interaction leads to an effective molecular potential between disconnected solitons, inducing a complex scattering physics between them, which includes inelastic fusion into soliton-molecules, and strong symmetric and asymmetric inelastic resonances. In addition, a…
We investigate the dynamics and modulation of ring dark soliton in 2D Bose-Einstein condensates with tunable interaction both analytically and numerically. The analytic solutions of ring dark soliton are derived by using a new transformation method. For shallow ring dark soliton, it is stable when the ring is slightly distorted, while for large deformation of the ring, vortex pairs appear and they demonstrate novel dynamical behaviors: the vortex pairs will transform into dark lumplike solitons and revert to ring dark soliton periodically. Moreover, our results show that the dynamical evolutio…
We study the nonlinear excitations of a vortex-line in a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a one-dimensional optical lattice. We find that the classical Euler dynamics of the vortex results in a description of the vortex line in terms of a (discrete) one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation, which allows for both bright and gray soliton solutions. We discuss these solutions in detail and predict that it is possible to create vortex-line solitons with current experimental capabilities.
We consider the formation of bright solitons in a mixture of Bose and Fermi degenerate gases confined in a three-dimensional elongated harmonic trap. The Bose and Fermi atoms are assumed to effectively attract each other whereas bosonic atoms repel each other. Strong enough attraction between bosonic and fermionic components can change the character of the interaction within the bosonic cloud from repulsive to attractive making thus possible the generation of bright solitons in the mixture. On the other hand, such structures might be in danger due to the collapse phenomenon existing in attract…
We observe bright matter-wave solitons form during the collapse of 85Rb condensates in a three-dimensional magnetic trap. The collapse is induced by using a Feshbach resonance to suddenly switch the atomic interactions from repulsive to attractive. Remnant condensates containing several times the critical number of atoms for the onset of instability are observed to survive the collapse. Under these conditions a highly robust configuration of solitons forms such that each soliton satisfies the condition for stability and neighboring solitons exhibit repulsive interactions.
We consider coupled atomic-molecular Bose-Einstein condensate system in a quasi-one-dimensional trap. In the vicinity of a Feshbach resonance the system can reveal soliton-like behavior. We analyze bright soliton solutions for the system in the trap and in the presence of the interactions between particles. We show that with increasing number of particles in the system two bright soliton solutions start resembling dark soliton profiles known in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate with repulsive interactions between atoms. We analyze also methods for experimental preparation and detection of the…
We present the experimental discovery of compound structures comprising solitons and vortex rings in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). We examine both their creation via soliton-vortex collisions and their subsequent development, which is largely governed by the dynamics of interacting vortex rings. A theoretical model in three-dimensional (3D) cylindrical symmetry is also presented.
We construct families of incoherent matter-wave solitons in a repulsive degenerate Bose gas trapped in an optical lattice (OL), i.e., gap solitons, and investigate their stability at zero and finite temperature, using the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equations. The gap solitons are composed of a coherent condensate, and normal and anomalous densities of incoherent vapor co-trapped with the condensate. Both intragap and intergap solitons are constructed, with chemical potentials of the components falling in one or different bandgaps in the OL-induced spectrum. Solitons change gradually with temperat…
Complex, localized stable solitons, characterized by a power law behaviour, are found for a quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate near Feshbach resonance. Both dark and bright solitons can be excited in the experimentally allowed parameter domain, when two and three-body interactions are respectively repulsive and attractive. These solutions are obtained for non-zero chemical potential, unlike their unstable real counterparts which exist in the limit of vanishing $μ$. The dark solitons travel with constant speed, which is quite different from the Lieb mode, where profiles with differe…
We present two families of analytical solutions of the one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation which describe the dynamics of bright and dark solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with the time-dependent interatomic interaction in an expulsive parabolic and complex potential. We also demonstrate that the lifetime of both a bright soliton and a dark soliton in BECs can be extended by reducing both the ratio of the axial oscillation frequency to radial oscillation frequency and the loss of atoms. It is interested that a train of bright solitons may be excited with a strong enough b…
We study soliton solutions for the Gross--Pitaevskii equation of the spinor Bose--Einstein condensates with hyperfine spin F=2 in one-dimension. Analyses are made in two ways: by assuming single-mode amplitudes and by generalizing Hirota's direct method for multi-components. We obtain one-solitons of single-peak type in the ferromagnetic, polar and cyclic states, respectively. Moreover, twin-peak type solitons both in the ferromagnetic and the polar state are found.
Solitons are among the most distinguishing fundamental excitations in a wide range of non-linear systems such as water in narrow channels, high speed optical communication, molecular biology and astrophysics. Stabilized by a balance between spreading and focusing, solitons are wavepackets, which share some exceptional generic features like form-stability and particle-like properties. Ultra-cold quantum gases represent very pure and well-controlled non-linear systems, therefore offering unique possibilities to study soliton dynamics. Here we report on the first observation of long-lived dark an…
We present a family of exact solutions of one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation, which describe the dynamics of a bright soliton in Bose-Einstein condensates with the time-dependent interatomic interaction in an expulsive parabolic potential. Our results show that, under the safe range of parameters, the bright soliton can be compressed into very high local matter densities by increasing the absolute value of atomic scattering length, which can provide an experimental tool for investigating the range of validity of the one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We also find that the n…
We theoretically study the structure of a stationary soliton in the polar phase of spin-1 Bose--Einstein condensate in the presence of quadratic Zeeman effect at zero temperature. The phase diagram of such solitons is mapped out by finding the states of minimal soliton energy in the defining range of polar phase. The states are assorted into normal, anti-ferromagnetic, broken-axisymmetry, and ferromagnetic phases according to the number and spin densities in the core. The order of phase transitions between different solitons and the critical behaviour of relevant continuous transitions are pro…
The excitations of a two-dimensional (2D) Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of a soliton are studied by solving the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation which is valid when the velocity of the soliton approaches the speed of sound. The excitation spectrum is found to contain states which are localized near the soliton and have a dispersion law similar to the one of the stable branch of transverse oscillations of a 1D gray soliton in a 2D condensate. By using the stabilization method we show that these localized excitations behave as resonant states coupled to the continuum of free excitation…
We develop a perturbation theory for bright solitons of the F=1 integrable spinor Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) model. The formalism is based on using the Riemann-Hilbert problem and provides the means to analytically calculate evolution of the soliton parameters. Both rank-one and rank-two soliton solutions of the model are obtained. We prove equivalence of the rank-one soliton and the ferromagnetic rank-two soliton. Taking into account a splitting of a perturbed polar rank-two soliton into two ferromagnetic solitons, it is sufficient to elaborate a perturbation theory for the rank-one solit…
We derive exact solitonic solutions of a class of Gross-Pitaevskii equations with time-dependent harmonic trapping potential and interatomic interaction. We find families of exact single-solitonic, multi-solitonic, and solitary wave solutions. We show that, with the special case of an oscillating trapping potential and interatomic interaction, a soliton can be localized indefinitely at an arbitrary position. The localization is shown to be experimentally possible for sufficiently long time even with only an oscillating trapping potential and a constant interatomic interaction.
We explore bright soliton solutions of ultracold Bose-Fermi gases, showing that the presence of p-wave interactions can remove the usual collapse instability and support stable soliton solutions that are global energy minima. A variational model that incorporates the relevant s- and p-wave interactions in the system is established analytically and solved numerically to probe the dependencies of the solitons on key experimental parameters. Under attractive s-wave interactions, bright solitons exist only as meta-stable states susceptible to collapse. Remarkably, the presence of repulsive p-wave …
We show that a multiply-quantized vortex line core can be energetically stable in a harmonically trapped two-component atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. The structure, in which the condensate component with the vortex line is surrounded by the second component forming a vortex ring, can be identified as a particlelike Skyrmion with a multiply-quantized winding number, and closely resembles cosmic vortons.
We study dark soliton solutions of a multi-component Gross--Pitaevskii equation for hyperfine spin F=1 spinor Bose--Einstein condensate. The interactions are supposed to be inter-atomic repulsive and anti-ferromagnetic ones of equal magnitude. The solutions are obtained from those of an integrable $2\times 2$ matrix nonlinear Schrödinger equation with nonvanishing boundary conditions. We investigate the one-soliton and two-soliton solutions in detail. One-soliton is classified into two kinds. The ferromagnetic state has wavefunctions of domain-wall shape and its total spin is nonzero. The pola…
