The discovery of neutrino masses has provided strong hints in favor of the possibility that B-L symmetry is an intimate feature of physics beyond the standard model. I discuss how important information about this symmetry as well as other scenarios for TeV scale new physics can be obtained from the baryon number violating process, neutron-anti-neutron oscillation. This article presents an overview of different aspects of neutron-anti-neutron oscillation and is divided into the following parts : (i) the phenomenon; (ii) the physics, (iii) plausible models and (iv) applications to cosmology. In particular, it is argued how the discovery of $n-\bar{n}$ oscillation can significantly affect our thinking about simple grand unified theory paradigms for physics beyond the standard model, elucidate the nature of forces behind neutrino mass and provide a new microphysical view of the origin of matter in the universe.
By use of the AdS/CFT correspondence on orbifolds, models are derived which can contain the standard model of particle phenomenology. It will be assumed that the theory becomes conformally invariant at a renormalization-group fixed-point in the TeV region.
We reanalyze the recent data from the Liquid Scintillator Neutrino Detector (LSND) experiment, that might indicate anti-nu_mu<--->anti-nu_e mixing. This indication is not completely excluded by the negative results of established accelerator and reactor neutrino oscillation searches. We quantify the region of compatibility by means of a thorough statistical analysis of all the available data, assuming both two-flavor and three-flavor neutrino oscillations. The implications for various theoretical scenarios and for future oscillation searches are studied. The relaxation of the LSND constraints …
The cosmogenic neutron yield $Y_n$ characterizes the matter ability to produce neutrons under the effect of cosmic ray muons with spectrum and average energy corresponding to an observation depth. The yield is the basic characteristic of cosmogenic neutrons. The neutron production rate and neutron flux both are derivatives of the yield. The constancy of the exponents $α$ and $β$ in the known dependences of the yield on energy $Y_n {\propto} E_μ^α$ and the atomic weight $Y_n {\propto} A^β$ allows to combine these dependences in a single formula and to connect the yield with muon energy loss in …
We discuss the phenomenology of neutron Electric Dipole Moment from the Standard Model and beyond, and identify the matrix elements most necessary to connect the current and forthcoming experiments with phenomenology. We then describe lattice techniques for calculating these matrix elements
We explain the physics of neutrino oscillation in vacuum and in matter. We attempt to clarify several features of oscillation that can be puzzling when neutrinos are their own antiparticles.
We review the theory of polarized structure functions measured in deep-inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering, focusing on the most recent developments. We concentrate on the structure function $g_1$, emphasizing the phenomenological problems related to the extraction of the proton and neutron $g_1(x,Q^2)$ from the data, and to the determination of its moments, especially the first moment. In particular, we discuss the theoretical and experimental uncertainties due to the $Q^2$ dependence of the data, small and large $x$ extrapolations, QCD loop corrections, higher twist corrections, and, in conn…
We consider the possibility of neutron-antineutron ($n-\bar n$) conversion, in which the change of a neutron into an antineutron is mediated by an external source, as can occur in a scattering process. We develop the connections between $n-{\bar n}$ conversion and $n-{\bar n}$ oscillation, in which a neutron spontaneously tranforms into an antineutron, noting that if $n-{\bar n}$ oscillation occurs in a theory with B-L violation, then $n-{\bar n}$ conversion can occur also. We show how an experimental limit on $n-{\bar n}$ conversion could connect concretely to a limit on $n-{\bar n}$ oscillat…
Can supersymmetric models with a moderate stop mass be made consistent with the negative Higgs boson searches at LEP, while keeping perturbative unification manifest? The NMSSM achieves this rather easily, but only if extra matter multiplets filling complete SU(5) representations are present at intermediate energies. As a concrete example which makes use of this feature, we give an analytic description of the phenomenology of a constrained NMSSM close to a Peccei-Quinn symmetry point. The related pseudo-Goldstone boson appears in decays of the Higgs bosons and possibly of the lightest neutrali…
Phenomenology of uncolored iquarks - hypothetical fermions charged under a new confining unbroken non-abelian gauge group as well as the standard electroweak gauge group - is investigated for the iquark mass in the range near and above 100 GeV. If the new confining scale turns out to be higher than MeV but much less than the iquark mass, the iquark-antiiquark pair produced in the collider will promptly relaxed into the ground state of the iquarkonium. Subsequent pair annihilation into standard model particles gives useful information of the iquark dynamics. We formulate in details production a…

The long and short gamma-ray bursts are believed to be produced due to collapse of massive stars and merger of compact binaries respectively. All these objects are rich in neutron and the jet outflow from these objects must have a neutron component in it. By postulating the neutron anti-neutron oscillation in the gamma-ray burst fireball, we show that, 19-38 GeV neutrinos and anti-neutrinos can be produced due to annihilation of anti-neutrons with the background neutrons. These neutrinos and anti-neutrinos will be produced before the 5-10 GeV neutrinos due to dynamical decoupling of neutrons f…
Transformation of neutron to antineutron is a small effect that has not yet been experimentally observed. %\cite{Phillips:2014fgb}. In principle, it can occur with free neutrons in the vacuum or with bound neutrons inside the nuclear environment different for neutrons and antineutrons and for that reason in the latter case it is heavily suppressed. Free neutron transformation also can be suppressed if environmental vector field exists destinguishing neutron from antineutron. We consider here the case of a vector field coupled to $B-L$ charge of the particles ($B-L$ photons) and study a possibi…
We study the systematic decomposition of the dimension nine neutron-antineutron oscillation operators at tree and one-loop levels. We discuss the topologies' generation and the assignment of the chiral quarks. The completed lists of the decompositions are provided. We furthermore show an example that the neutron-antineutron oscillation occurs at one-loop level, with the tiny neutrino mass being generated via the scotogenic model and proton decay being evaded.
Seesaw mechanism has been a dominant paradigm in the discussion of neutrino masses. I discuss how this idea can be tested via a baryon number violating process such as $N-\bar{N}$ oscillation. Since the expected seesaw scale is high and the $N-\bar{N}$ amplitude goes like $M^{-5}_{R}$, one might think that this process is not observable in realistic seesaw models for neutrino masses. In this talk I show that in supersymmetric models, the above conclusion is circumvented leading to an enhanced and observable rate for $N-\bar{N}$ oscillation. I also discuss a new mechanism for baryogenesis in ge…
We point out that if neutron--antineutron oscillation is observed in a free neutron oscillation experiment, it will put an upper limit on the strengths of Lorentz invariance violating (LIV) mass operators for neutrons at the level of $10^{-23}$ GeV or so, which would be the most stringent LIV limit for neutrons. We also study constraints on $ΔB=2$ LIV operators and find that for one particular operator degaussing is not necessary to obtain a visible signal. We also note that observation of $n-\bar{n}$ oscillation signal in the nucleon decay search experiment involving nuclei does not lead to a…
We discuss implications of open string theory in B-violating low energy physics. In particular, exotic instantons can dynamically generate effective six quarks' operator, leading to a neutron-antineutron transition. Proton is not destabilized and flavor changing neutral currents are under control.
We propose a new approach based on the Lindblad and Bloch equations for the density matrix to the problem of a neutron into an antineutron conversion. We consider three strategies to search for conversion: experiments with trapped neutrons, oscillations in nuclei, and quasi-free propagation. We draw a distinction between $n\bar{n}$ oscillations in which the probability that a neutron transforms into an antineutron depends on time according to the sine-square law and the non-oscillatory overdamped $n\bar{n}$ conversion. We show that in all three cases decoherence due to the interaction with the…
The scotogenic mechanism for radiative neutrino mass is generalized to include neutron-antineutron oscillation as well as proton decay. Dark matter is stabilized by extending the notion of lepton parity to matter parity. Leptogenesis is also a possible byproduct. This framework unifies the description of all these important, but seemingly unrelated, topics in physics beyond the standard model of particle interactions.
We propose a new scenario for predicting a one-loop neutron-antineutron oscillation at a testable level, meanwhile, realizing a thermal or inflationary baryogenesis at a very high scale. Besides the standard model content, this scenario involves two real singlet scalars with very heavy masses, two color-triplet and iso-singlet scalars at the TeV scale, as well as a Majorana singlet fermion for a dark matter candidate.
It is shown that the neutron-antineutron oscillation per se does not necessarily imply CP violation in an effective local Lorentz invariant description of the neutron which preserves CPT, contrary to a recent analysis in the literature. A CP- and baryon number-violating term can be transformed into a CP conserving one, thus rendering the CP violation spurious and unusable in the analysis of baryogenesis, for example. It is also shown that the neutron-antineutron oscillation in a $ΔB=2$, Lorentz and CPT invariant interaction can occur only when parity is violated, irrespective of the CP propert…
If a Z' gauge boson from a gauged L_mu - L_tau symmetry is very light, it is associated with a long-range leptonic force. In this case the particles in the Sun create via mixing of the Z' with the Standard Model Z a flavor-dependent potential for muon neutrinos in terrestrial long-baseline experiments. The potential changes sign for anti-neutrinos and hence can lead to apparent differences in neutrino and anti-neutrino oscillations without introducing CP or CPT violation. This could for instance explain the recently found discrepancy in the MINOS experiment. We obtain the associated parameters…
It is argued that within the correct treatment of analytical properties of the transition amplitudes, in particular, the second order pole structure, characteristic for the $n - \bar n$ transition in nuclei, the "infrared divergences" discussed in some papers, do not appear. Explicit calculation with the help of diagram technique shows that the neutron-antineutron oscillations are strongly suppressed within a deuteron, as well as within arbitrary nucleus, in comparison with the oscillations in vacuum.
We discuss a possibility that baryon number $B$ is spontaneously broken at low scales, of the order of MeV or even smaller, so that the neutron-antineutron oscillation can be induced at the experimentally accessible level. An associated Goldstone particle, baryonic majoron, can have observable effects in neutron to antineutron transitions in nuclei or dense nuclear matter. By extending baryon number to $B-L$ symmetry, baryo-majoron can be identified with the ordinary majoron associated with the spontaneous breaking of lepton number, with interesting implications for neutrinoless $2β$ becay wit…
An analysis is made of the role played by the gas environment in neutron-mirror-neutron and neutron-antineutron oscillations. In the first process the interaction with the ambient medium induces a refraction energy shift which plays the role of an extra magnetic field. In the second process antineutron annihilation in practice might lead to strong decoherence, which should be taken into account in experiments with free neutrons looking for the neutron to antineutron transformation.
The experimental observation of neutron - antineutron oscillations is one of the oldest problems of elementary-particle physics. However, the search for these processes in the laboratories on the Earth have thus far yielded no results. In this paper, we consider the possibility of finding $n - \tilde n$ oscillations in the solar cosmic rays at flare increases. There are two arguments in favour of such an approach to this problem: a long distance for a neutron run and a weak magnetic field in the solar cosmic-ray environment. Therefore, the presence of antinucleons in solar cosmic rays may be a…
R-parity and baryon number violating operators can be allowed in the Supersymmetric Standard Model and thus lead to interesting baryon number violating processes such as neutron-antineutron oscillations and baryogenesis of the Universe via the decay of the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP). Adopting the LSP baryogenesis mechanism realized by the late decay of the axino, we identify a single coupling lambda''_313 as a common origin for the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the Universe as well as potentially observable neutron-antineutron oscillation rates. From this, rather strong constraint…
Recently we extended the standard model by four TeV-scale fields including a singlet fermion, an isotriplet and two isosinglet diquark scalars to generate the cosmological baryon asymmetry with an observable neutron-antineutron oscillation. We now supersymmetrize our model but do not constrain it at the TeV scale. The superpartner of the singlet fermion can serve as an inflaton field. Its three-body decays, mediated by the isosinglet diquarks and their superpartners, can simultaneously provide a low reheating temperature and a sizable CP asymmetry. We thus can realize a nonthermal baryogenesis…
We discuss the predictions for neutron-anti-neutron oscillation in various supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric grand unified theories. It is pointed out that in a new class of superstring inspired grand unified theories of $E_6$-type that satisfy gauge coupling unification, breakdown of B-L symmetry occurs at an intermediate scale leading in turn to $ΔB=1$ type R-parity violating interactions naturally suppressed to the level of $10^{-5}$ to $10^{-7}$. This inturn implies an $N-\bar{N}$ transition time of order $10^{10}$ to $10^{11}$ sec. which may be observable in the next generation of exp…
We have reexamined the problem of $n-\bar n$ oscillations for ultra-cold neutrons (UCN) confined within a trap. We have shown that the growth of the $\bar n$ component with time is to a decent accuracy given by $P(\bar n)= ε^2_{n\bar n} t_Lt,$ where $ε_{n\bar n}$ is the mixing parameter, $t_L\sim 1 $ sec in the neutron propagation time between subsequent collisions with the trap walls. Possible corrections to this law and open questions are discussed.
(abridged) The physical mechanisms that make a neutrino with standard-model (SM) weak interactions a "lepton-number conservation (LNC) violating" neutrino such as the Majorana neutrino are analysed in a basis of two Majorana states that have opposite charge-parity ("charge-parity basis"). A small Majorana mass that is larger than any Dirac mass makes the neutrino not a Majorana but a "pseudo-Majorana" particle that has no definite chirality and therefore has a different phenomenology than the physical neutrino. A combination of a large Majorana and Dirac mass of nearly equal value makes the ne…
We expose a grave drawback hidden in the standard model of neutron-antineutron transitions in a medium. Correcting it, one improves a limit on the free-space neutron-antineutron oscillation time by 31 orders of magnitude.
Coherent forward neutron propagation in gas is discussed as a new approach to search for neutron-antineutron oscillations ($ n-\bar{n}$), which violate both $B$ and $B-L$ conservation. We show that one can increase the probability of neutron - antineutron transitions to essentially the free neutron oscillation rate in the presence of a nonzero external magnetic field by tuning the density of an appropriate mixture of gases so that the neutron optical potential of the gas cancels that from an external magnetic field.
We study the possibility that the current accelerated expansion of the universe is driven by the vacuum energy density of a colored scalar field which is responsible for a phase transition in which the gauge SU(3)_c symmetry breaks. We show that if we are stuck in a SU(3)_c - preserving false vacuum, then SU(3)_c symmetry breaking can be accommodated without violating any experimental QCD bounds or bounds from cosmological observations. Moreover, unless there is an unnatural fine-tuning beyond the usual cosmological constant fine-tuning, the true vacuum state of the universe is anti-de Sitter.…
We construct the Chiral Perturbation Theory operators for neutron-antineutron oscillations and use these to estimate chiral and finite volume corrections at one-loop order.
Assuming the Lorentz and CPT invariances we show that neutron-antineutron oscillation implies breaking of CP along with baryon number violation -- i.e. two of Sakharov conditions for baryogenesis. The oscillation is produced by the unique operator in the effective Hamiltonian. This operator mixing neutron and antineutron preserves charge conjugation C and breaks P and T. External magnetic field always leads to suppression of oscillations. Its presence does not lead to any new operator mixing neutron and antineutron.
The indications in favor of short-baseline neutrino oscillations, which require the existence of one or more sterile neutrinos, are reviewed. In the framework of 3+1 neutrino mixing, which is the simplest extension of the standard three-neutrino mixing which can partially explain the data, there is a strong tension in the interpretation of the data, mainly due to an incompatibility of the results of appearance and disappearance experiments. In the framework of 3+2 neutrino mixing, CP violation in short-baseline experiments can explain the difference between MiniBooNE neutrino and antineutrino …
In the analysis of neutron-antineutron oscillations, it has been recently argued in the literature that the use of the $iγ^{0}$ parity $n^{p}(t,-\vec{x})=iγ^{0}n(t,-\vec{x})$ which is consistent with the Majorana condition is mandatory and that the ordinary parity transformation of the neutron field $n^{p}(t,-\vec{x}) = γ^{0}n(t,-\vec{x})$ has a difficulty. We show that a careful treatment of the ordinary parity transformation of the neutron works in the analysis of neutron-antineutron oscillations. Technically, the CP symmetry in the mass diagonalization procedure is important and the two par…
The values of the antineutron-nucleus scattering lengths, and in particular their imaginary parts, are needed to evaluate the feasibility of using neutron mirrors in laboratory experiments to search for neutron-antineutron oscillations. We analyze existing experimental and theoretical constraints on these values with emphasis on low $A$ nuclei and use the results to suggest materials for the neutron/antineutron guide and to evaluate the systematic uncertainties in estimating the neutron-antineutron oscillation time. As an example we discuss a scenario for a future neutron-antineutron oscillati…
An observation of neutron-antineutron oscillations ($ n-\bar{n}$), which violate both $B$ and $B-L$ conservation, would constitute a scientific discovery of fundamental importance to physics and cosmology. A stringent upper bound on its transition rate would make an important contribution to our understanding of the baryon asymmetry of the universe by eliminating the post-sphaleron baryogenesis scenario in the light quark sector. We show that one can design an experiment using slow neutrons that in principle can reach the required sensitivity of $τ_{n-\bar{n}}\sim 10^{10}s$ in the oscillation …
This is a draft of my brief note on the early history of $n\bar{n}$ oscillations written for the Project X at the request of Chris Quigg in March 2013.
Generation of the cosmological baryon asymmetry in SUSY based model with broken R-parity and low scale gravity is considered. The model allows for a long-life time or even stable proton and observable neutron-antineutron oscillations.
We discuss some aspects of possible neutron--antineutron oscillations in nuclei. The phenomenon occurs mostly at the surface of nuclei, and hence {\sl i)} is not very sensitive to medium corrections and {\sl ii)} makes use of the antinucleon-nucleus interaction in a region probed by experiments at CERN.
We briefly outline the present state of the $n\bar{n}$ transition problem and analyse the recent manuscript of the Vladimir Kopeliovich (arXiv: 0912.5065).
The problem of nuclear decays occurring due to the neutron-antineutron oscillation is analyzed in the optical potentil model and within the field-theoretic S-matrix approach. The result of the optical potential model is rederived within the field theoretic S-matrix approach. The neutron- antineutron oscillation in nuclei is suppressed drastically. We discuss an example for the spin precession of an atom in which analogous suppression takes place due to transparent physical reasons.
We formulate the quantum field theory description of neutron-antineutron oscillations in the framework of canonical quantization, in analogy with the Bardeen--Cooper--Schrieffer (BCS) theory and the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. The physical vacuum of the theory is a condensate of pairs of {\it would-be neutrons and antineutrons} in the absence of the baryon-number violating interaction. The quantization procedure defines uniquely the mixing of massive Bogoliubov quasiparticle states which represent the neutron. In spite of not being mass eigenstates, neutron and antineutron states are defined on…
We analyze status of ${\bf C}$, ${\bf P}$ and ${\bf T}$ discrete symmetries in application to neutron-antineutron transitions breaking conservation of baryon charge ${\cal B}$ by two units. At the level of free particles all these symmetries are preserved. This includes ${\bf P}$ reflection in spite of the opposite internal parities usually ascribed to neutron and antineutron. Explanation, which goes back to the 1937 papers by E. Majorana and by G. Racah, is based on a definition of parity satisfying ${\bf P}^{2}=-1$, instead of ${\bf P}^{2}=1$, and ascribing $ {\bf P}=i$ to both, neutron and …
A new scheme for testing nuclear matter equations of state (EsoS) at high densities using constraints from neutron star phenomenology and a flow data analysis of heavy-ion collisions is suggested. An acceptable EoS shall not allow the direct Urca process to occur in neutron stars with masses below $1.5~M_{\odot}$, and also shall not contradict flow and kaon production data of heavy-ion collisions. Compact star constraints include the mass measurements of 2.1 +/- 0.2 M_sun (1 sigma level) for PSR J0751+1807, of 2.0 +/- 0.1 M_sun from the innermost stable circular orbit for 4U 1636-536, the bary…
Realistic calculations of nuclear disappearance lifetimes induced by neutron-antineutron oscillations are reported for oxygen and iron, using antineutron nuclear potentials derived from a recent comprehensive analysis of antiproton atomic X-ray and radiochemical data. A lower limit of 3.3 x 10E8 s on the neutron-antineutron oscillation time is derived from the Super-Kamiokande I new lower limit of 1.77 x 10E32 yr on the neutron lifetime in oxygen. Antineutron scattering lengths in carbon and nickel, needed in trap experiments using ultracold neutrons, are calculated from updated antinucleon op…
We briefly outline the models of the $n\bar{n}$ transition in nuclei and analyse a well known calculation based on diagram technique published in 1992 and repeated recently by V. Kopeliovich and I. Potashnikova.
We refute a recent claim by Nazaruk that the limits placed on the free--space neutron--antineutron oscillation time $τ_{n\bar n}$ can be improved by many orders of magnitude with respect to the estimate $τ_{n\bar n}>2(T_0/Γ)^{1/2}$, where $T_0$ is a measured limit on the annihilation lifetime of a nucleus and $Γ\sim 100$ MeV is a typical antineutron-nucleus annihilation width.
We summarize the current status of baryon number violation in supersymmetry and provide prospects for going beyond the present reach by means of a new search for neutron-antineutron oscillations. The main motivation is the recently proposed neutron-antineutron oscillation experiment at the European Spallation Source in Lund, Sweden, which is projected to be able to improve the current bound on the transition probability in the quasi-free regime by three orders of magnitude. We consider various processes involving superpartners that give rise to neutron-antineutron oscillations and extract the …
We investigate neutron-antineutron oscillations in the Randall-Sundrum warped extra dimensional scenario. The four dimensional effective strengths of the relevant operators that induce the oscillations are calculated up to an arbitrary coupling along with their corresponding enhancements due to QCD 1-loop running effects. We find that the $ΔB = 2$ operators can be geometrically suppressed without fine tuning to within current experimental limits with a warped down four dimensional mass scale which can be as low as a fraction of a TeV.
