This is a draft of my brief note on the early history of $n\bar{n}$ oscillations written for the Project X at the request of Chris Quigg in March 2013.
An observation of neutron-antineutron oscillations ($ n-\bar{n}$), which violate both $B$ and $B-L$ conservation, would constitute a scientific discovery of fundamental importance to physics and cosmology. A stringent upper bound on its transition rate would make an important contribution to our understanding of the baryon asymmetry of the universe by eliminating the post-sphaleron baryogenesis scenario in the light quark sector. We show that one can design an experiment using slow neutrons that in principle can reach the required sensitivity of $τ_{n-\bar{n}}\sim 10^{10}s$ in the oscillation …
We summarize the current status of baryon number violation in supersymmetry and provide prospects for going beyond the present reach by means of a new search for neutron-antineutron oscillations. The main motivation is the recently proposed neutron-antineutron oscillation experiment at the European Spallation Source in Lund, Sweden, which is projected to be able to improve the current bound on the transition probability in the quasi-free regime by three orders of magnitude. We consider various processes involving superpartners that give rise to neutron-antineutron oscillations and extract the …
The values of the antineutron-nucleus scattering lengths, and in particular their imaginary parts, are needed to evaluate the feasibility of using neutron mirrors in laboratory experiments to search for neutron-antineutron oscillations. We analyze existing experimental and theoretical constraints on these values with emphasis on low $A$ nuclei and use the results to suggest materials for the neutron/antineutron guide and to evaluate the systematic uncertainties in estimating the neutron-antineutron oscillation time. As an example we discuss a scenario for a future neutron-antineutron oscillati…
We study the systematic decomposition of the dimension nine neutron-antineutron oscillation operators at tree and one-loop levels. We discuss the topologies' generation and the assignment of the chiral quarks. The completed lists of the decompositions are provided. We furthermore show an example that the neutron-antineutron oscillation occurs at one-loop level, with the tiny neutrino mass being generated via the scotogenic model and proton decay being evaded.
Transformation of neutron to antineutron is a small effect that has not yet been experimentally observed. %\cite{Phillips:2014fgb}. In principle, it can occur with free neutrons in the vacuum or with bound neutrons inside the nuclear environment different for neutrons and antineutrons and for that reason in the latter case it is heavily suppressed. Free neutron transformation also can be suppressed if environmental vector field exists destinguishing neutron from antineutron. We consider here the case of a vector field coupled to $B-L$ charge of the particles ($B-L$ photons) and study a possibi…
We construct the Chiral Perturbation Theory operators for neutron-antineutron oscillations and use these to estimate chiral and finite volume corrections at one-loop order.
We consider the possibility of neutron-antineutron ($n-\bar n$) conversion, in which the change of a neutron into an antineutron is mediated by an external source, as can occur in a scattering process. We develop the connections between $n-{\bar n}$ conversion and $n-{\bar n}$ oscillation, in which a neutron spontaneously tranforms into an antineutron, noting that if $n-{\bar n}$ oscillation occurs in a theory with B-L violation, then $n-{\bar n}$ conversion can occur also. We show how an experimental limit on $n-{\bar n}$ conversion could connect concretely to a limit on $n-{\bar n}$ oscillat…
Coherent forward neutron propagation in gas is discussed as a new approach to search for neutron-antineutron oscillations ($ n-\bar{n}$), which violate both $B$ and $B-L$ conservation. We show that one can increase the probability of neutron - antineutron transitions to essentially the free neutron oscillation rate in the presence of a nonzero external magnetic field by tuning the density of an appropriate mixture of gases so that the neutron optical potential of the gas cancels that from an external magnetic field.
The scotogenic mechanism for radiative neutrino mass is generalized to include neutron-antineutron oscillation as well as proton decay. Dark matter is stabilized by extending the notion of lepton parity to matter parity. Leptogenesis is also a possible byproduct. This framework unifies the description of all these important, but seemingly unrelated, topics in physics beyond the standard model of particle interactions.
We propose a new scenario for predicting a one-loop neutron-antineutron oscillation at a testable level, meanwhile, realizing a thermal or inflationary baryogenesis at a very high scale. Besides the standard model content, this scenario involves two real singlet scalars with very heavy masses, two color-triplet and iso-singlet scalars at the TeV scale, as well as a Majorana singlet fermion for a dark matter candidate.
We propose a new approach based on the Lindblad and Bloch equations for the density matrix to the problem of a neutron into an antineutron conversion. We consider three strategies to search for conversion: experiments with trapped neutrons, oscillations in nuclei, and quasi-free propagation. We draw a distinction between $n\bar{n}$ oscillations in which the probability that a neutron transforms into an antineutron depends on time according to the sine-square law and the non-oscillatory overdamped $n\bar{n}$ conversion. We show that in all three cases decoherence due to the interaction with the…
We examine what role do collisions with the wall play in neutron-antineutron transitions. The collision time for $n$ and $\bar{n}$ and the phase difference between reflected $n$ and $\bar{n}$ waves are calculated. It is shown that transitions inside the wall are negligible.
We analyze status of ${\bf C}$, ${\bf P}$ and ${\bf T}$ discrete symmetries in application to neutron-antineutron transitions breaking conservation of baryon charge ${\cal B}$ by two units. At the level of free particles all these symmetries are preserved. This includes ${\bf P}$ reflection in spite of the opposite internal parities usually ascribed to neutron and antineutron. Explanation, which goes back to the 1937 papers by E. Majorana and by G. Racah, is based on a definition of parity satisfying ${\bf P}^{2}=-1$, instead of ${\bf P}^{2}=1$, and ascribing $ {\bf P}=i$ to both, neutron and …
In the analysis of neutron-antineutron oscillations, it has been recently argued in the literature that the use of the $iγ^{0}$ parity $n^{p}(t,-\vec{x})=iγ^{0}n(t,-\vec{x})$ which is consistent with the Majorana condition is mandatory and that the ordinary parity transformation of the neutron field $n^{p}(t,-\vec{x}) = γ^{0}n(t,-\vec{x})$ has a difficulty. We show that a careful treatment of the ordinary parity transformation of the neutron works in the analysis of neutron-antineutron oscillations. Technically, the CP symmetry in the mass diagonalization procedure is important and the two par…
We study a simple TeV-scale model of baryon number violation which explains the observed proximity of the dark matter and baryon abundances. The model has constraints arising from both low and high-energy processes, and in particular, predicts a sizable rate for the neutron-antineutron ($n-\bar{n}$) oscillation at low energy and the monojet signal at the LHC. We find an interesting complementarity among the constraints arising from the observed baryon asymmetry, ratio of dark matter and baryon abundances, $n-\bar{n}$ oscillation lifetime and the LHC monojet signal. There are regions in the par…
We formulate the quantum field theory description of neutron-antineutron oscillations in the framework of canonical quantization, in analogy with the Bardeen--Cooper--Schrieffer (BCS) theory and the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. The physical vacuum of the theory is a condensate of pairs of {\it would-be neutrons and antineutrons} in the absence of the baryon-number violating interaction. The quantization procedure defines uniquely the mixing of massive Bogoliubov quasiparticle states which represent the neutron. In spite of not being mass eigenstates, neutron and antineutron states are defined on…
R-parity and baryon number violating operators can be allowed in the Supersymmetric Standard Model and thus lead to interesting baryon number violating processes such as neutron-antineutron oscillations and baryogenesis of the Universe via the decay of the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP). Adopting the LSP baryogenesis mechanism realized by the late decay of the axino, we identify a single coupling lambda''_313 as a common origin for the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the Universe as well as potentially observable neutron-antineutron oscillation rates. From this, rather strong constraint…
Fundamental symmetry tests of baryon number violation in low-energy experiments can probe beyond the Standard Model (BSM) explanations of the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the universe. Neutron-antineutron oscillations are predicted to be a signature of many baryogenesis mechanisms involving low-scale baryon number violation. This work presents first-principles calculations of neutron-antineutron matrix elements needed to accurately connect measurements of the neutron-antineutron oscillation rate to constraints on $|ΔB|=2$ baryon number violation in BSM theories. Several important systematic …
We point out that if the baryon number violating neutron-antineutron oscillation is discovered, it would impose strong limits on the departure from Einstein's equivalence principle at a level of one part in $10^{19}$. If this departure owes its origin to the existence of long-range forces coupled to baryon number $B$ (or $B-L$), it would imply very stringent constraints on the strength of gauge bosons coupling to baryon number current. For instance, if the force mediating baryon number has strength $α_B$ and its range is larger than a megaparsec, we find the limit to be $α_B \leq 2\times 10^{-…
Neutron-antineutron ($n-\bar n$) oscillations in the deuteron are considered. Specifically, the deuteron lifetime is calculated in terms of the free-space $n-\bar n$ oscillation time $τ_{n-\bar n}$ based on $NN$ and $\bar NN$ interactions derived within chiral effective field theory (EFT). This results in $(2.6\pm 0.1) \times 10^{22}\,τ^2_{n-\bar n}$ s, which is close to the value obtained by Dover and collaborators more than three decades ago, but disagrees with recent EFT calculations that were performed within the perturbative scheme proposed by Kaplan, Savage, and Wise. Possible reasons fo…
In companion papers \cite{Addazi:2015pia,Addazi:2016rgo}, we have discussed current bounds of a new super-light baryo-photon, associated to a $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauged, from neutron-antineutron current data, which are competitive with Eötvös type experiments. Here, we discuss the implications of a possible baryo-photon detection in string theory and quantum gravity. The discovery of a very light gauge boson should imply the violation of the Weak Gravity Conjecture, carrying deep consequences in our understanding of holography, quantum gravity and black holes. On the other hand, we show how the detec…
Future neutron-antineutron ($n$-$\bar n$) oscillation experiments, such as at the European Spallation Source and the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment, aim to find first evidence of baryon number violation. We investigate implications of an improved $n$-$\bar n$ oscillation search for baryogenesis via interactions of $n$-$\bar n$ mediators, parameterized by an effective field theory (EFT). We find that even in a minimal EFT setup, there is overlap between the parameter space probed by $n$-$\bar n$ oscillation and the region that can realize the observed baryon asymmetry of the universe. The…
With the imminent construction of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) and Hyper-Kamiokande, nucleon decay searches as a means to constrain beyond Standard Model (BSM) extensions are once again at the forefront of fundamental physics. Abundant neutrons within these large experimental volumes, along with future high-intensity neutron beams such as the European Spallation Source, offer a powerful, high-precision portal onto this physics through searches for $\mathcal{B}$ and $\mathcal{B}-\mathcal{L}$ violating processes such as neutron--antineutron transformations ($n\rightarrow\bar{n…
