This paper provides an in-depth empirical analysis of several evolutionary algorithms on the one-dimensional spin glass model with power-law interactions. The considered spin glass model provides a mechanism for tuning the effective range of interactions, what makes the problem interesting as an algorithm benchmark. As algorithms, the paper considers the genetic algorithm (GA) with twopoint and uniform crossover, and the hierarchical Bayesian optimization algorithm (hBOA). hBOA is shown to outperform both variants of GA, whereas GA with uniform crossover is shown to perform worst. The differences between the compared algorithms become more significant as the problem size grows and as the range of interactions decreases. Unlike for GA with uniform crossover, for hBOA and GA with twopoint crossover, instances with short-range interactions are shown to be easier. The paper also points out interesting avenues for future research.
We test for the existence of a spin-glass phase transition, the de Almeida-Thouless line, in an externally-applied (random) magnetic field by performing Monte Carlo simulations on a power-law diluted one-dimensional Ising spin glass for very large system sizes. We find that an Almeida-Thouless line only occurs in the mean field regime, which corresponds, for a short-range spin glass, to dimension d larger than 6.
We study the issue of the spin-chirality decoupling/coupling in the ordering of the Heisenberg spin glass by performing large-scale Monte Carlo simulations on a one-dimensional Heisenberg spin-glass model with a long-range power-law interaction up to large system sizes. We find that the spin-chirality decoupling occurs for an intermediate range of the power-law exponent. Implications to the corresponding $d$-dimensional short-range model is discussed.
The nature of the ordering of the one-dimensional Heisenberg spin-glass model with a long-range power-law interaction is studied by extensive Monte Carlo simulations, with particular attention to the issue of the spin-chirality decoupling/coupling. Large system sizes up to $L=4096$ are studied. With varying the exponent $σ$ describing the power-law interaction, we observe three distinct types of ordering regimes. For smaller $σ$, the spin and the chirality order at a common finite temperature with a common correlation-length exponent, exhibiting the standard spin-chirality coupling behavior. F…
We study evolutionary canalization using a spin-glass model with replica theory, where spins and their interactions are dynamic variables whose configurations correspond to phenotypes and genotypes, respectively. The spins are updated under temperature T_S, and the genotypes evolve under temperature T_J, according to the evolutionary fitness. It is found that adaptation occurs at T_S < T_S^{RS}, and a replica symmetric phase emerges at T_S^{RSB} < T_S < T_S^{RS}. The replica symmetric phase implies canalization, and replica symmetry breaking at lower temperatures indicates loss of robustness.
In this work we consider the {\em analog bipartite spin-glass} (or {\em real-valued restricted Boltzmann machine} in a neural network jargon), whose variables (those quenched as well as those dynamical) share standard Gaussian distributions. First, via Guerra's interpolation technique, we express its quenched free energy in terms of the natural order parameters of the theory (namely the self- and two-replica overlaps), then, we re-obtain the same result by using the replica-trick: a mandatory tribute, given the special occasion. Next, we show that the quenched free energy of this model is the …
The similarity in atomic structure between liquids and glasses has stimulated a long-standing hypothesis that the nature of glasses may be more fluid like, rather than an apparent solid. In principle, the nature of glasses can be characterized by measuring the dynamic response of rheology to shear strain rate in the glass state. However, limited by the brittleness of glasses and current experimental techniques, the dynamic behaviors of glasses were mainly assessed in the supercooled liquid state or in the glass state within a narrow rate range. Therefore, the nature of glasses has not been wel…
We test for the presence or absence of the de Almeida-Thouless line using one-dimensional power-law diluted Heisenberg spin glass model, in which the rms strength of the interactions decays with distance, r as 1/r^{sigma}. It is argued that varying the power sigma is analogous to varying the space dimension d in a short-range model. For sigma=0.6, which is in the mean field regime regime, we find clear evidence for an AT line. For sigma = 0.85, which is in the non-mean-field regime and corresponds to a space dimension of close to 3, we find no AT line, though we cannot rule one out for very sm…
Particle swaps can drastically accelerate dynamics in glass. The mechanism is expected to be vital for a fundamental understanding of glassy dynamics. To extract defining features, we propose a partial swappability with a fraction {ϕ_s} of swap-initiating particles, which can only swap locally with each other or with regular particles. We focus on the swap-dominating regime. At all temperatures studied, particle diffusion coefficients scale with {ϕ_s} in unexpected power laws with temperature-dependent exponents, consistent with the kinetic picture of glass transition. At small {ϕ_s}, swap-ini…
We study the zero-temperature relaxation dynamics of an electron glass model with single-electron hops. We find numerically that in the charge rearrangements (avalanches) triggered by displacing an electron, the number of electron hops has a scale-free, power-law distribution up to a cutoff diverging with the system size $N$, independently of the disorder strength and provided hops of arbitrary length are allowed. In avalanches triggered by the injection of an extra electron, the distribution does not have a power-law limit, but its mean diverges non-trivially with $N$. In both cases, the aval…
We study for random quantum spin systems the energy gap between the ground and first excited states to clarify a relation to the spin-glass-paramagnetic phase transition. We find that for the transverse Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model the vanishing of the averaged gap does not identify the transition. A power-law form of the gap distribution function leads to power-law distributions of the linear, spin-glass, and nonlinear susceptibilities. They diverge at different points, which we attribute to a quantum Griffiths mechanism. On the other hand, the classical treatment is justified for the transv…
The correlation length $ξ$, a key quantity in glassy dynamics, can now be precisely measured for spin glasses both in experiments and in simulations. However, known analysis methods lead to discrepancies either for large external fields or close to the glass temperature. We solve this problem by introducing a scaling law that takes into account both the magnetic field and the time-dependent spin-glass correlation length. The scaling law is successfully tested against experimental measurements in a CuMn single crystal and against large-scale simulations on the Janus II dedicated computer.
The one-dimensional Ising spin-glass model with power-law long-range interactions is a useful proxy model for studying spin glasses in higher space dimensions and for finding the dimension at which the spin-glass state changes from having broken replica symmetry to that of droplet behavior. To this end we have calculated the exponent that describes the difference in free energy between periodic and antiperiodic boundary conditions. Numerical work is done to support some of the assumptions made in the calculations and to determine the behavior of the interface free-energy exponent of the power …
The finite temperature dynamics of the Dyson hierarchical classical spins models is studied via real-space renormalization rules concerning the couplings and the relaxation times. For the ferromagnetic model involving Long-Ranged coupling $J(r) \propto r^{-1-σ}$ in the region $1/2<σ<1$ where there exists a non-mean-field-like thermal Ferromagnetic-Paramagnetic transition, the RG flows are explicitly solved: the characteristic relaxation time $τ(L)$ follows the critical power-law $τ(L)\propto L^{z_c(σ)} $ at the phase transition and the activated law $\ln τ(L)\propto L^ψ $ with $ψ=1-σ$ in the f…
Potts glasses are prototype models that have been used to understand the structural glass transition. However, in finite space dimensions a glass transition remains to be detected in the 10-state Potts glass. Using a one-dimensional model with long-range power-law interactions we present evidence that a glass transition below the upper critical dimension can exist for short-range systems at low enough temperatures. Gaining insights into the structural glass transition for short-range systems using spin models is thus potentially possible, yet difficult.

Scaling arguments and precise simulations are used to study the square lattice $\pm J$ Ising spin glass, a prototypical model for glassy systems. Droplet theory predicts, and our numerical results show, entropically-stabilized long range spin glass order at zero temperature. The low temperature scaling behavior has an important new crossover length scale that produces a power-law dependence of the heat capacity on temperature.
We study the existence of a line of transitions of an Ising spin glass in a magnetic field-known as the de Almeida-Thouless line-using one-dimensional power-law diluted Ising spin-glass models. We choose the power-law exponent to have values that approximately correspond to three- and four-dimensional nearest-neighbor systems and perform a detailed finite-size scaling analysis of the data for large linear system sizes, both using a new approach proposed recently [Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 267201 (2009)], as well as traditional approaches. Our results for the model corresponding to a three-dimensio…
For the one-dimensional long-ranged Ising spin-glass with random couplings decaying with the distance $r$ as $J(r) \sim r^{-σ}$ and distributed with the Lévy symmetric stable distribution of index $1 <μ\leq 2$ (including the usual Gaussian case $μ=2$), we consider the region $σ>1/μ$ where the energy is extensive. We study two real space renormalization procedures at zero temperature, namely a simple box decimation that leads to explicit calculations, and a strong disorder decimation that can be studied numerically on large sizes. The droplet exponent governing the scaling of the renormalized c…
The fractal dimension of excitations in glassy systems gives information on the critical dimension at which the droplet picture of spin glasses changes to a description based on replica symmetry breaking where the interfaces are space filling. Here, the fractal dimension of domain-wall interfaces is studied using the strong-disorder renormalization group method pioneered by Monthus [Fractals 23, 1550042 (2015)] both for the Edwards-Anderson spin-glass model in up to 8 space dimensions, as well as for the one-dimensional long-ranged Ising spin-glass with power-law interactions. Analyzing the fr…
We present data on the magnetic properties of two classes of layered spin S=1/2 antiferromagnetic quasi-triangular lattice materials: $Cu_{2(1-x)}Zn_{2x}(OH)_3NO_3$ ($0 < x < 0.65$) and its long chain organic derivatives $Cu_{2(1-x)}Zn_{2x}(OH)_3(C_7H_{15}COO)\cdot mH_2O$ ($0 < x < 0.29$), where non-magnetic Zn substitutes Cu isostructurally. It is found that the long-chain compounds, even in a clean system in the absence of dilution, $x\!=\!0$, show spin-glass behavior, as evidenced by DC and AC susceptibility, and by time dependent magnetization measurements. A striking feature is the observ…
Chimera graphs define the topology of one of the first commercially available quantum computers. A variety of optimization problems have been mapped to this topology to evaluate the behavior of quantum enhanced optimization heuristics in relation to other optimizers, being able to efficiently solve problems classically to use them as benchmarks for quantum machines. In this paper we investigate for the first time the use of Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs) on Ising spin glass instances defined on the Chimera topology. Three genetic algorithms (GAs) and three estimation of distribution algorithms …
Ground states of local Hamiltonians are known to obey the entanglement entropy area law. While area law violation of a mild kind (logarithmic) is commonly encountered, strong area-law violation (more than logarithmic) is rare. In this paper, we study the long range quantum spin glass in one dimension whose couplings are disordered and fall off with distance as a power-law. We show that this system exhibits more than logarithmic area law violation in its ground state. Strikingly this feature is found to be true even in the short range regime in sharp contrast to the spinless long range disorder…

We study the one-dimensional Bose gas in spatially correlated disorder at zero temperature, using an extended density-phase Bogoliubov method. We analyze in particular the decay of the one-body density matrix and the behaviour of the Bogoliubov excitations across the phase boundary. We observe that the transition to the Bose glass phase is marked by a power-law divergence of the density of states at low energy. A measure of the localization length displays a power-law energy dependence in both regions, with the exponent equal to -1 at the boundary. We draw the phase diagram of the superfluid-i…
We discuss some generic features of the dynamics of glass-forming liquids close to the glass transition singularity of the idealized mode-coupling theory (MCT). The analysis is based on a recent model by one of the authors for the intermediate-time dynamics ($β$ relaxation), derived by applying dynamical field-theory techniques to the idealized MCT. Combined with the assumption of time-temperature superposition for the slow structural ($α$) relaxation, the model naturally explains three prominent features of the dynamical crossover: the change from a power-law to exponential increase in the st…
We use the general statement of the second law applied to an isolated system, the glass in an extremely large medium, to prove that the entropy of the glass must decrease with time during its relaxation towards the supercooled liquid state. This result contradicts the claim of Mauro et al and their computational result of the entropy, according to which their entropy of the glass increases. Our approach using the isolated system completely bypasses the issue of ergodicity loss in glasses, as discussed in the comment.
Spin glasses and many-body localization (MBL) are prime examples of ergodicity breaking, yet their physical origin is quite different: the former phase arises due to rugged classical energy landscape, while the latter is a quantum-interference effect. Here we study quantum dynamics of an isolated 1d spin-glass under application of a transverse field. At high energy densities, the system is ergodic, relaxing via resonance avalanche mechanism, that is also responsible for the destruction of MBL in non-glassy systems with power-law interactions. At low energy densities, the interaction-induced fi…
We study the out-of-equilibrium dynamics in the quantum Ising model with power-law interactions and positional disorder. For arbitrary dimension $d$ and interaction range $α\geq d$ we analytically find a stretched exponential decay of the global magnetization and ensemble-averaged single-spin purity with a stretch-power $β= d/α$ in the thermodynamic limit. Numerically, we confirm that glassy behavior persists for finite system sizes and sufficiently strong disorder. We identify dephasing between disordered coherent pairs as the main mechanism leading to a relaxation of global magnetization, wh…
We study the bimodal Edwards-Anderson spin glass comparing established methods, namely the multicanonical method, the $1/k$-ensemble and parallel tempering, to an approach where the ensemble is modified by simulating power-law-shaped histograms in energy instead of flat histograms as in the standard multicanonical case. We show that by this modification a significant speed-up in terms of mean round-trip times can be achieved for all lattice sizes taken into consideration.
