We present a detailed study of the coupling-constant-averaged exchange-correlation hole density at a jellium surface, which we obtain in the random-phase approximation (RPA) of many-body theory. We report contour plots of the exchange-only and exchange-correlation hole densities, the integration of the exchange-correlation hole density over the surface plane, the on-top correlation hole, and the energy density. We find that the on-top correlation hole is accurately described by local and semilocal density-functional approximations. We also find that for electrons that are localized far outside the surface the main part of the corresponding exchange-correlation hole is localized at the image plane.
Manipulation of antiferromagnetic (AFM) spins by electrical means is on great demand to develop the AFM spintronics with low power consumption. In spite of the electrical modulation of insulated AFMs through coupling between their intrinsic ferroelectricity and antiferromagnetism, direct electrical control of AFM metals remains challenging due to the screening effect by the surface charge, and the manipulation is confined to a limited depth of atomic dimensions, which is insufficient to form a stable AFM exchange spring. In the present letter we primarily report a reversible electrical control…
Adiabatic-Connection-Fluctuation-Dissipation approach to the long-range behavior of the exchange-correlation energy at metal surfaces: A numerical study for jellium slabs
To understand spin interactions in materials of the Cu$_2$Sb structure type, inelastic neutron scattering of Fe$_2$As single crystals was examined at different temperatures and incident neutron energies. The experimental phonon spectra match well with the simulated phonon spectra obtained from density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The measured magnon spectra were compared to the simulated magnon spectra obtained via linear spin wave theory with the exchange coupling constants calculated using the spin polarized, relativistic Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method in Zhang et al. (2013). The sim…
We discuss the application of the Agapito Curtarolo and Buongiorno Nardelli (ACBN0) pseudo-hybrid Hubbard density functional to several transition metal oxides. ACBN0 is a fast, accurate and parameter-free alternative to traditional DFT+$U$ and hybrid exact exchange methods. In ACBN0, the Hubbard energy of DFT+$U$ is calculated via the direct evaluation of the local Coulomb and exchange integrals in which the screening of the bare Coulomb potential is accounted for by a renormalization of the density matrix. We demonstrate the success of the ACBN0 approach for the electronic properties of a se…
We use temperature-dependent Hall measurements to identify contributions of spin Hall, magnetic proximity, and sublattice effects to the anomalous Hall signal in heavy metal/ferrimagnetic insulator heterostructures with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. This approach enables detection of both the magnetic proximity effect onset temperature and the magnetization compensation temperature and provides essential information regarding the interfacial exchange coupling. Onset of a magnetic proximity effect yields a local extremum in the temperature-dependent anomalous Hall signal, which occurs at h…

In this paper, we developed a thermodynamically consistent approach to account for the Gibbs energy of pure metallic element with thermal vacancy over wide temperature range. Taking body centered cubic (bcc) W for a demonstration, the strong nonlinear increase for temperature dependence of heat capacities at high temperatures and a nonlinear Arrhenius plots of vacancy concentration in bcc W can be nicely reproduced by the obtained Gibbs energy. The successful description of thermal vacancy on abnormal thermodynamic behaviors in bcc W indicates that the presently proposed thermodynamically cons…
The modern quantum theory of magnetism in solids is getting commonly derived using Green's functions formalism. The popularity draws itself from remarkable opportunities to capture the microscopic landscape of exchange interactions, starting from a tight-binding representation of the electronic structure. Indeed, the conventional method of infinitesimal spin rotations, considered in terms of local force theorem, opens vast prospects of investigations regarding the magnetic environment, as well as pairwise atomic couplings. However, this theoretical concept practically does not devoid of intrin…
{\it Ab initio} studies of spin-spiral waves and exchange interactions in 3{\it d} transition metal atomic chains

We consider two cobalt-based full-Heusler compounds CoFeTiAl and Co$_2$FeSi, for which Coulomb correlation effects play an important role. Since the standard GGA scheme does not provide a precise description of the electronic properties near the Fermi level, we use a meta-GGA functional capable to improve the description of the electronic properties of CoFeTiAl and Co$_2$FeSi. In particular, we find a better agreement with the experiment for the magnetic moment and the energy-band gap. Moreover, our calculations show that pressure enhances the insulating properties of Co$_2$FeSi and CoTiFeAl.
In this paper, we have found a family of intermetallic compounds YMn12-xFex (x = 6.6-8.8) showing a bulk form of tunable giant exchange bias effect which arises from global interactions among ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) sublattices but not the interfacial exchange coupling or inhomogeneous magnetic clusters. A giant exchange bias with a loop shift up to 6.1 kOe has been observed in YMn4.4Fe7.6 compound with the strongest competing magnetic interactions. In a narrow temperature range, the exchange bias field shows a sudden switching off whereas the coercivity shows a sudden s…
Previous work on the physical content of exchange correlation functionals that depend on both charge and spin densities is extended to elemental transition metals and a wider range of perovskite transition metal oxides. A comparison of spectra and magnetic moments calculated using exchange correlation functionals depending on charge density only or on both charge and spin densities, as well as the $+U$ and $+J$ extensions of these methods confirms previous conclusions that the spin-dependent part of the exchange correlation functional provides an effective Hund's interaction acting on the tran…
We report that the spin current generated by spin Seebeck effect (SSE) in yttrium iron garnet (YIG) can be detected by a ferromagnetic metal (NiFe). By using the FM/AFM exchange bias structure (NiFe/IrMn), inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) and planar Nernst effect (PNE) of NiFe can be unambiguously separated, allowing us to observe a pure ISHE signal. After eliminating the in plane temperature gradient in NiFe, we can even observe a pure ISHE signal without PNE from NiFe itself. It is worth noting that a large spin Hall angle (0.098) of NiFe is obtained, which is comparable with Pt. This work pr…
The random phase approximation (RPA) systematically overestimates the magnitude of the correlation energy and generally underestimates cohesive energies. This originates in part from the complete lack of exchange terms, which would otherwise cancel Pauli exclusion principle violating (EPV) contributions. The uncanceled EPV contributions also manifest themselves in form of an unphysical negative pair density of spin-parallel electrons close to electron-electron coalescence. We follow considerations of many-body perturbation theory to propose an exchange correction that corrects the largest set …
We estimate the prediction sensitivity with respect to Hartree-Fock exchange in approximate density functionals for representative Fe(II) and Fe(III) octahedral complexes. Based on the observation that the range of parameters spanned by the most widely-employed functionals is relatively narrow, we compute electronic structure property and spin-state orderings across a relatively broad range of Hartree-Fock exchange (0-50%) ratios. For the entire range considered, we consistently observe linear relationships between spin-state ordering that differ only based on the element of the direct ligand …
Exchange Interaction and $T_c$ in Alkaline-earth-metal-oxide-based DMS without Magnetic Impurities: First Principle Pseudo-SIC and Monte Carlo Calculation

In comparison with the accurate data on the on-top electron density n(0) in the proton-embedded electron gas with the density parameter r_s in the range 1-12 obtained by diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) simulations, we have successfully constructed an alternative form of the exchange-correlation energy functional in the density functional theory by imposing the constraint due to the cusp theorem on the well-known Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) functional. Although PBE does not, our functional, referred to as the cusp-corrected PBE (ccPBE), reproduces the DMC data on n(0) in the entire range of r_s.
Role of the exchange and correlation potential into calculating the x-ray absorption spectra of half-metallic alloys: the case of Mn and Cu K-edge XANES in Cu$_2$MnM (M = Al, Sn, In) Heusler alloys
A novel Ti3+-based thiospinel ZnTi2S4 is successfully synthesized via a low-temperature ion-exchange reaction. ZnTi2S4 shows a signature of metallic ground state evidenced by a contribution of conduction electrons in the heat capacity and Pauli-like paramagnetic susceptibility. These observations contrast to the electronic state of similar Ti3+-based spinel MgTi2O4 exhibiting the metal-insulator transition associated with a molecular orbital crystallization (MOC). Furthermore, the magnetic susceptibility of ZnTi2S4 shows a pseudogap-like behavior indicated by a vast peak in the magnetic suscep…
This study examines the potential of superconductivity in transition metal (TM) intercalated bilayer graphene through a systematic study of the electronic and magnetic properties. We determine the electronic structure for all first row TM elements in the stable honeycomb configuration between two layers of graphene using density functional theory (DFT). Through an analysis of the electron density, we assess the induction of the magnetic moment in each case, where a comparison of the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic configurations allow us to ascertain an estimated exchange coupling between …
Spin angular momentum transfer in magnetic bilayers offers the possibility of ultrafast and low-loss operation for next-generation spintronic devices. We report the field- and temperature- dependent measurements on the magnetization precessions in Co$_2$FeAl/(Ga,Mn)As by time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect (TRMOKE). Analysis of the effective Gilbert damping and phase shift indicates a clear signature of an enhanced dynamic exchange coupling between the two ferromagnetic (FM) layers due to the reinforced spin pumping at resonance. The temperature dependence of the dynamic exchange-couplin…
Aiming to combine density functional theory (DFT) and wavefunction theory, we study a mapping from the many-body interacting system to an effectively-interacting Kohn-Sham system instead of a non-interacting Kohn-Sham system. Because a ground state of effectively-interacting systems requires having a solution for the correlated many-body wavefunctions, this provides a natural framework to many-body wavefunction theories such as the configuration interaction and the coupled cluster method in the formal theoretical framework of DFT. Employing simple one-dimensional two-electron systems -- namely…
The interplay of symmetry and quenched disorder leads to some of the most fundamentally interesting and technologically important properties of correlated materials. It also poses the most vexing of theoretical challenges. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the study of spin glasses. A spin glass is characterized by an ergodic landscape of states - an innumerable number of possibilities that are only weakly distinguished energetically, if at all. We show in the material Fe$_x$NbS$_2$, this landscape of states can be biased by coexisitng antiferromagnetic order. This process leads to a pheno…
