We study a parton shower description, based on a dipole picture, of the final state in electron-positron annihilation. In such a shower, the distribution function describing the inclusive probability to find a quark with a given energy depends on the shower evolution time. Starting from the exclusive evolution equation for the shower, we derive an equation for the evolution of the inclusive quark energy distribution in the limit of strong ordering in shower evolution time of the successive parton splittings. We find that, as expected, this is the DGLAP equation. This paper is a response to a recent paper of Dokshitzer and Marchesini that raised troubling issues about whether a dipole based shower could give the DGLAP equation for the quark energy distribution.
We discuss the elements of QED X QCD exponentiation and its interplay with shower/ME matching and IR-improved DGLAP theory in precision LHC physics scenarios. Applications to single heavy gauge boson production at hadron colliders are illustrated.
It has been argued recently that parton showers based on colour dipoles conflict with collinear factorization and do not lead to the correct DGLAP equation. We show that this conclusion is based on an inappropriate assumption, namely the choice of the gluon energy as evolution variable. We further show numerically that Monte Carlo programs based on dipole showers with "infrared sensible" evolution variables reproduce the DGLAP equation both in asymptotic form as well as in comparison to the leading behaviour of second-order QCD matrix elements.
We present the interplay between the new IR-improved DGLAP-CS theory and the precision of NLO parton shower/ME matched MC`s as it is realized by the new MC Herwiri1.031 in interface to MC@NLO. We discuss phenomenological implications using comparisons with recent LHC data on single heavy gauge boson production.
We present the recent developments in exact amplitude-based resummation methods for non-Abelian gauge theories as they relate to precision LHC physics. We discuss QEDXQCD exponentiation, shower/ME matching, IR-improved DGLAP-CS theory and implications, as developed by one of us (BFLW), for a UV finite theory of quantum general relativity.
We introduce the new IR-improved Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi-Callan-Symanzik (DGLAP-CS) kernels recently developed by one of us into the HERWIG6.5 to generate a new MC, HERWIRI1.0(31), for hadron-hadron scattering at high energies. We use MC data to compare the parton shower generated by the standard DGLAP-CS kernels and that generated by the new IR-improved DGLAP-CS kernels. The seamless interface to MC@NLO, MC@NLO/HERWIRI, is illustrated. We show comparisons with FNAL data and we discuss some possible LHC phenomenology implications.
We introduce the recently developed IR-improved DGLAP-CS theory into the showers in Pythia8, as this Monte Carlo event generator is in wide use at LHC. We show that, just as it was true in the IR-improved shower Monte Carlo Herwiri, which realizes the IR-improved DGLAP-CS theory in the Herwig6.5 environment, the soft limit in processes such as single heavy gauge boson production is now more physical in the IR-improved DGLAP-CS theory version of Pythia8. This opens the way to one's getting a comparison between the actual detector simulations for some of the LHC experiments between IR-improved a…
We present a parton shower which implements the DGLAP evolution of parton densities and fragmentation functions at next-to-leading order precision up to effects stemming from local four-momentum conservation. The Monte-Carlo simulation is based on including next-to-leading order collinear splitting functions in an existing parton shower and combining their soft enhanced contributions with the corresponding terms at leading order. Soft double counting is avoided by matching to the soft eikonal. Example results from two independent realizations of the algorithm, implemented in the two event gene…

We present MC data that illustrate the comparison between the parton shower generated by the standard DGLAP-CS kernels and that generated by the new IR-improved DGLAP-CS kernels. We present Monte Carlo data showing the comparison between the parton shower generated by the standard DGLAP-CS kernels and that generated with the new IR-improved DGLAP-CS kernels recently developed by one of us(BFLW). We do this in the context of HERWIG6.5 by implementing the new kernels therein to generate a new MC, HERWIRI1.0, for hadron-hadron interactions at high energies. We discuss possible phenomenological implications for precision LHC theory. We also present comparisons with FNAL data.
We present the current status of the application of our approach of {\it exact} amplitude-based resummation in quantum field theory to precision QCD calculations, by realistic MC event generator methods, as needed for precision LHC physics. In this ongoing program of research, we discuss recent results as they relate to the interplay of the attendant IR-Improved DGLAP-CS theory of one of us and the precision of exact NLO matrix element matched parton shower MC's in the Herwig6.5 environment in relation to recent LHC experimental observations. There continues to be reason for optimism in the att…
We show for a first time ever a prototype of a fully exclusive QCD NLO parton shower for the initial state (albeit for a limited set of diagrams). It is based on the rigorous theorems of the collinear factorisation, however the standard DGLAP evolution kernels are replaced by their exclusive versions. Contrary to the standard DGLAP approach, the constructed parton shower provides fully exclusive events, i.e. four-momenta of all emitted partons. At the inclusive level it is identical to the MS-bar scheme of the DGLAP evolution.
By implementing the new IR-improved Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi-Callan-Symanzik (DGLAP-CS) kernels recently developed by one of us in the HERWIG6.5 environment we generate a new MC, HERWIRI1.0(31), for hadron-hadron scattering at high energies. We use MC data to illustrate the comparison between the parton shower generated by the standard DGLAP-CS kernels and that generated by the new IR-improved DGLAP-CS kernels. The interface to MC@NLO, MC@NLO/HERWIRI, is illustrated. Comparisons with FNAL data and some discussion of possible implications for LHC phenomenology are also present…
We present a phenomenological study of the current status of the application of our approach of {\it exact} amplitude-based resummation in quantum field theory to precision QCD calculations, by realistic MC event generator methods, as needed for precision LHC physics. We discuss recent results as they relate to the interplay of the attendant IR-Improved DGLAP-CS theory of one of us and the precision of exact NLO matrix-element matched parton shower MC's in the Herwig6.5 environment as determined by comparison to recent LHC experimental observations on single heavy gauge boson production and de…
In a previous paper, hereafter referred to as I, we have analyzed the 7 TeV LHC data on W + jets events from the standpoint of IR-improved DGLAP parton shower effects, using the IR-improved Herwiri1.031 parton shower MC in comparison with the Herwig6.5 parton shower MC in the context of the exact $O(α_s)$ matrix element matched parton shower framework provided by MG5\_aMC@NLO. In the current paper, we extend this analysis to the LHC 8 and 13 TeV data to investigate the energy dependence of the results obtained in I. Specifically, W~+ jet events are generated in the MADGRAPH5\_aMC@NLO framework…
The new IR-improved Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi-Callan-Symanzik (DGLAP-CS) kernels recently developed by one of us is implemented in the HERWIG6.5 environment to generate a new MC, HERWIRI1.0(31), for hadron-hadron scattering at high energies. The comparison between the parton shower generated by the standard DGLAP-CS kernels and that generated by the new IR-improved DGLAP-CS kernels is illustrated using MC data. This is done for some of the respective exact {\cal O}(α_s) corrected spectra using the seamless interfaces to MC@NLO while making comparisons with FNAL data. Some disc…
We use HERWIRI1.031, a new Monte Carlo event generator for hadron-hadron scattering at high energies, to study the phenomenological effects of our approach of exact amplitude-based resummation in precision QCD calculations. W + jet(s) events with exact NLO QCD corrections are generated in the MG5_aMC@NLO framework and showered by both HERWIRI1.031 and HERWIG6.5 with PTRMS = 0 and PTRMS = 2.2 GeV/c, respectively. Here, PTRMS is the rms value of the intrinsic Gaussian transverse momentum distribution for the partons inside the proton. The differential cross sections for many observables are pres…
We show that the geometric scaling of the dipole cross section can be explained using standard DGLAP perturbative evolution. The DGLAP improved saturation model due to the Laplace transforms method is considered at LO and NNLO approximations from the experimental data by relying on a Froissart-bounded parametrization of $F_{2}(x,Q^{2})$. These results are comparable with Golec-Biernat-W$\ddot{\mathrm{u}}$sthoff (GBW) model in a wide kinematic region $rQ_{s}$ which takes into account charm mass. The successful description of $σ_{\mathrm{dip}}(x,r)/σ_{0}$ and $σ_{\mathrm{dip}}(rQ_{s})/σ_{0}$ are…
We use comparison with recent LHCb data on single Z/γ^* production and decay to lepton pairs as a vehicle to study the current status of the application of our approach of {\it exact} amplitude-based resummation in quantum field theory to precision QCD calculations, by realistic MC event generator methods, as needed for precision LHC physics. This represents an extension of the phase space of our previous studies based on comparison with CMS and ATLAS data, as the pseudo-rapidity range measured by the LHCb for leptons in the data we study is 2.0<η< 4.5 to be compared with |η|<4.6(2.4) in our p…
We report on re-calculation of the next-to-leading order DGLAP evolution kernels performed in a scheme suited for Monte Carlo simulations of parton cascades (parton showers).
Presently available perturbative QCD calculations combining hard process matrix element with the Parton Shower Monte Carlo programs feature hard process matrix element calculated often beyond the leading order (LO), that is including complete next-to-leading-order (NLO), or even next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) corrections, while Parton Shower is only at the leading order (LO). We report here on a work in progress which demonstrate feasibility of constructing Parton Shower Monte Carlo (PSMC) featuring complete NLO corrections to QCD evolution with respect to the logarithm of the factorizat…
We are reporting on the ongoing effort of the Monte Carlo (MC) modelling of NLO DGLAP QCD evolution in the fully unintegrated form. The resulting parton shower MC is performing on its own the NLO QCD evolution, contrary to all known programs of this kind which are limited to LO level only. We overview this new MC scheme, for the non-singlet subset of the gluonstrahlung diagrams. Precision numerical tests of this new scheme are also shown.
A framework to include triple collinear splitting functions into parton showers is presented, and the implementation of flavor-changing NLO splitting kernels is discussed as a first application. The correspondence between the Monte-Carlo integration and the analytic computation of NLO DGLAP evolution kernels is made explicit for both timelike and spacelike parton evolution. Numerical simulation results are obtained with two independent implementations of the new algorithm, using the two independent event generation frameworks Pythia and Sherpa.
Results for the two real parton differential distributions needed for implementing a next-to-leading order (NLO) parton shower Monte Carlo are presented. They are also integrated over the phase space in order to provide solid numerical control of the MC codes and for the discussion of the differences between the standard $\bar{MS}$ factorization and Monte Carlo implementation at the level of inclusive NLO evolution kernels. Presented results cover the class of non-singlet diagrams entering into NLO kernels. The classic work of Curci-Furmanski-Pertonzio was used as a guide in the calculations.
We present a modification of the DGLAP improved saturation model with respect to the nonlinear correction (NLC). The GLR-MQ improved saturation model is considered by employing the parametrization of proton structure function due to the Laplace transforms method, which preserves its behavior success in the low and high $Q^{2}$ regions. We show that the geometric scaling holds for the GLR-MQ improved model in a wide kinematic region $rQ_{s}$. These results are comparable with other models in a wide kinematic region $rQ_{s}$. The behavior of the dipole cross sections, with respect to the GLR-MQ …
We analyse the dependence of the peak position of the thrust distribution on the cutoff value in the Nagy-Soper dipole shower. We compare the outcome of the parton shower simulations to a relation of the dependence from an analytic computation, derived within soft-collinear effective theory. We show that the result of the parton shower simulations and the analytic computation are in good agreement.
In this publication the implementation of a new parton shower model based on the Catani-Seymour dipole factorisation, as first suggested by Z. Nagy and D. E. Soper, is discussed. First results obtained with the new algorithm are compared with experimental data.
We present the medium-modified energy collimation in the leading-logarithmic approximation (LLA) and next-to-leading-logarithmic approximation (NLLA) of QCD. As a consequence of more accurate kinematic considerations in the argument of the Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi (DGLAP) fragmentation functions (FFs) we find a new NLLA correction ${\cal O}(α_s)$ which accounts for the scaling violation of DGLAP FFs at small $x$. The jet shape is derived from the energy collimation within the same approximations and we also compare our calculations for the energy collimation with the event ge…
We present an implementation of a parton shower algorithm for hadron colliders and electron-positron colliders based on the dipole factorisation formulae. The algorithm treats initial-state partons on equal footing with final-state partons. We implemented the algorithm for massless and massive partons.
A parton-shower model for hadronic collisions based on the emission properties of QCD dipoles is proposed. This proposal therefore extends the well-known radiation pattern of pure final-state colour dipoles to QCD initial-state radiation, both of which are treated perturbatively. Corresponding dipole splitting functions are derived and the kinematics of all dipole splittings is discussed. Application to hadron production in electron-positron annihilation, to Drell-Yan lepton-pair and QCD jet production yields encouraging results.
The next-to-leading order (NLO) evolution of the parton distribution functions (PDFs) in QCD is a common tool in the lepton-hadron and hadron-hadron collider data analysis. The standard NLO DGLAP evolution is formulated for inclusive (integrated) PDFs and done using inclusive NLO kernels. We report here on the ongoing project, called KRKMC, in which NLO DGLAP evolution is performed for the exclusive multiparton (fully unintegrated) distributions (ePDFs) with the help of the exclusive kernels. These kernels are calculated within the two-parton phase space for the non-singlet evolution, using Cu…
We report on the implementation of a coherent dipole shower algorithm along with an automated implementation for dipole subtraction and for performing POWHEG- and MC@NLO-type matching to next-to-leading order (NLO) calculations. Both programs are implemented as add-on modules to the event generator Herwig++. A preliminary tune of parameters to data acquired at LEP, HERA and Drell-Yan pair production at the Tevatron has been performed, and we find an overall very good description which is slightly improved by the NLO matching.
We present a new parton-shower algorithm. Borrowing from the basic ideas of dipole cascades, the evolution variable is judiciously chosen as the transverse momentum in the soft limit. This leads to a very simple analytic structure of the evolution. A weighting algorithm is implemented, that allows to consistently treat potentially negative values of the splitting functions and the parton distributions. We provide two independent, publicly available implementations for the two event generators Pythia and Sherpa.
We summarize the recent progress in a new approach to precision LHC physics based on the IR-improved DGLAP-CS theory as it relates to a new MC friendly exponentiated scheme for precision calculation of higher order corrections to LHC physics in which IR singularities from both QED and QCD are canceled to all orders in αand in α_s simultaneously in the presence of rigorous shower/ME matching. We present the first MC data comparing the implied new showers themselves with the standard ones using the HERWIG6.5 MC event generator as a test case at LHC energies.
We propose a novel hybrid model for jet quenching, including both strong and weak coupling physics where each seems appropriate. Branching in the parton shower is assumed to be perturbative and described by DGLAP evolution, while interactions with the medium result in each parton in the shower losing energy as at strong coupling, as realized holographically. The medium-modified parton shower is embedded into a hydrodynamic evolution of hot QCD plasma and confronted with LHC jet data.
Parton showers have become a standard component in the description of high-energy collisions. Nowadays most final-state ones are of the dipole character, wherein a pair of partons branches into three, with energy and momentum preserved inside this subsystem. For initial-state showers a dipole picture is also possible and commonly used, but the older global-recoil strategy remains a valid alternative, wherein larger groups of partons share the energy--momentum preservation task. In this article we introduce and implement a dipole picture also for initial-state radiation in PYTHIA, and compare w…
We present a complete formalism for final-state (timelike) dipole-antenna showers including fermion masses, but neglecting polarization and finite-width effects. We make several comparisons of tree-level expansions of this shower algorithm to fixed-order matrix elements for hadronic Z decays, up to and including Z to 6 partons, to which the algorithm can be consistently matched over all of phase space. We also compare to analytical resummations at the NLL level. The shower algorithm has been implemented in the publicly available VINCIA plugin to the PYTHIA 8 event generator, which enables us t…
The dipole formalism provides a powerful framework from which parton showers can be constructed. In a recent paper, we proposed a dipole shower with improved colour accuracy and in this paper we show how it can be further improved. After an explicit check at $\mathcal{O}(α_{\mathrm{s}}^{2})$ we confirm that our original shower performs as it was designed to, i.e. inheriting its handling of angular-ordered radiation from a coherent branching algorithm. We also show how other dipole shower algorithms fail to achieve this. Nevertheless, there is an $\mathcal{O}(α_{\mathrm{s}}^{2})$ topology where…
We carry out extensive tests of the next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) accuracy of the PanScales parton showers, as introduced recently for colour-singlet production in hadron collisions. The tests include comparisons to (semi-)analytic NLL calculations of a wide range of hadron-collider observables: the colour-singlet boson transverse momentum distribution; global and non-global hadronic energy flow variables related to jet vetoes and analogues of jettiness distributions; (sub)jet multiplicities; and observables sensitive to the DGLAP evolution of the incoming momentum fractions. In the tests,…
We compute the next-to-leading order corrections to soft-gluon radiation differentially in the one-emission phase space. We show that their contribution to the evolution of color dipoles can be obtained in a modified subtraction scheme, such that both one- and two-emission terms are amenable to Monte-Carlo integration. The two-loop cusp anomalous dimension is recovered naturally upon integration over the full phase space. We present two independent implementations of the new algorithm in the two event generators Pythia and Sherpa, and we compare the resulting fully differential simulation to t…
We present an algorithm to rearrange the colour chains of dipole showers in the shower process according to the colour amplitudes of a simple matrix element. We implement the procedure in the dipole shower of Herwig and show comparisons to data.
I investigate the relationship between the gluon distribution obtained using a dipole model fit to low-x data on F_2(x,Q^2) and standard gluons obtained from global fits with the collinear factorization theorem at fixed order. I stress the necessity to do fits of this type carefully, and in particular to include the contribution from heavy flavours to the inclusive structure function. I find that the dipole cross-section must be rather steeper than the gluon distribution, which at least partially explains why dipole model fits produce dipole cross-sections growing quite strongly at small x, wh…
The calculations of $Z + b{\bar b}$ tagged jet production performed in the four- and five-flavour schemes allow for detailed comparison of the heavy flavour structure of collinear and transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distributions as well as for detailed investigations of heavy quarks radiated during the initial state parton shower cascade. We have determined the first set of collinear and TMD parton distributions in the four-flavour scheme with NLO DGLAP splitting functions within the Parton-Branching (PB) approach. The four- and five-flavour PB-TMD distributions were used to calcul…
In this paper we outline a new parton shower algorithm based on the Catani-Seymour dipole factorization. Our motivation is to have an algorithm which can naturally cooperate with the NLO calculations.
Including the new HERA data, the $γ^* p$ total cross section is analysed in the generalized vector dominance/colour-dipole picture (GVD/CDP) that contains scaling in $η= (Q^2 + m^2_0) / Λ^2 (W^2)$, where $Λ^2 (W^2)$ is an increasing function of $W^2$. At any $Q^2$, for $W^2 \to \infty$, the cross sections for virtual and real photons become identical, $σ_{γ^* p} (W^2, Q^2) / σ_{γp} (W^2) \to 1$. The gluon density deduced from the colour-dipole cross section fulfills the leading order DGLAP relationship. Evolution à la DGLAP breaks down for $η\lsim 0.1$.
We evaluate the unintegrated gluon distribution of the proton starting from a parametrization of the color dipole cross section including DGLAP evolution and saturation effects. To this end, we perform the Fourier-Bessel transform of $σ(x,r)/α(r)$. At large transverse momentum of gluons we match the so-obtained distribution to the logarithmic derivative of the collinear gluon distribution. We check our approach by calculating the proton structure function $F_L(x,Q^2)$ finding good agreement with HERA data.
We show the role played by QCD evolution and skewedness effects in the DVCS cross section at large $Q^2$ within the color dipole description of the process at photon level. The dipole cross section is given by the saturation model, which can be improved by DGLAP evolution at high photon virtualities. We investigate both possibilities as well as the off-forward effect through a simple phenomenological parametrisation. The results are compared to the recent ZEUS DVCS data.
We present a precise comparison of the results of the dipole models with the newest data from HERA on the diffractive open charm production. We found good agreement with the data on the diffractive open charm production both for the the gluon distributions from the considered dipole models and the DGLAP fits to HERA data from our earlier analysis for diffractive parton distributions with higher twist. We also show that exclusive diffractive charm production can practically be neglected
We present an algorithm for improving subsequent parton shower emissions by full SU(3) colour correlations in the framework of a dipole-type shower. As a proof of concept, we present results from the first implementation of such an algorithm for a final state shower.
The DGLAP and CCFM approaches to perturbative QCD evolution have been investigated by examining correlations of charmed hadron pairs in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV. The theoretical models are compared to the data taken by the LHCb experiment. Differences in the parton kinematics between the two approaches are discussed. In general a model incorporating NLO diagrams matched to parton showers describes the data best.
We evaluate the theoretical uncertainties in next-to-leading order plus parton shower predictions for top quark pair production and decay in hadronic collisions. Our work is carried out using the Herwig 7 event generator and presents an in-depth study of variations in matching schemes with two systematically different shower algorithms, the traditional angular-ordered and alternative dipole shower. We also present all of the required extensions of the Herwig dipole shower algorithm to properly take into account quark mass effects, as well as its ability to perform top quark decays. The predict…
The ratio of the cross sections for the transversely and longitudinally virtual photon polarizations, $σ^{γ^{*}p}_{L/T}$, at high photon-hadron energy scattering is studied. I investigate the relationship between the gluon distribution obtained using the color dipole model and standard gluons obtained from the Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi (DGLAP) evolution and the Altarelli-Martinelli equations. It is shown that the color dipole bounds are dependent on the gluon distribution behavior. This behavior is considered by the expansion and Laplace transform methods. Numerical calculatio…
We perform a detailed analysis of next-to-leading order plus parton-shower matching in vector-boson-fusion WW production including leptonic decays. The study is performed in the Herwig 7 framework interfaced to VBFNLO 3, using the angular-ordered and dipole-based parton-shower algorithms combined with the subtractive and multiplicative matching algorithms.
We describe an algorithm for improving subsequent parton shower emissions by full SU(3) color correlations in the framework of a dipole-type shower. As a proof of concept, we present results from the first implementation of such an algorithm for a final state shower. The corrections are found to be small for event shapes and jet rates but can be more significant for tailored observables.
Modern parton showers are built using one of two models: dipole showers or angular ordered showers. Both have distinct strengths and weaknesses. Dipole showers correctly account for wide-angle, soft gluon emissions and track the leading flows in QCD colour charge but they are known to mishandle partonic recoil. Angular ordered showers keep better track of partonic recoil and correctly include large amounts of wide-angle, soft physics but azimuthal averaging means they are known to mishandle some correlations. In this paper, we derive both approaches from the same starting point; linking our un…
The ultrahigh energy neutrino-nucleon cross sections are computed taking into account different phenomenological implementations of the non-linear QCD dynamic s. Based on the color dipole framework, the results for the saturation model supplemented by DGLAP evolution as well as for the BFKL formalism in the geometric scaling regime are presented. They are contrasted with recent calculations using NLO DGLAP and unified BFKL-DGLAP formalisms.
The expectations for and the measurements of transverse energy flows, single particle p_T spectra, and the rate of forward jets in deep inelastic ep events from the H1 and ZEUS experiments at HERA are reported and discussed. It is shown that together they offer a good chance to establish deviations from the DGLAP paradigm. At the present level of limited statistics the measurements are compatible with predictions using BFKL resummation and with the color dipole model. Models based on DGLAP evolution describe the p_T spectra and forward jets less well but are not ruled out yet.
We predict readily experimentally measurable differences in the diffractive cross section in the coherent exclusive photoproduction of J/psi mesons in e + A collisions at eRHIC and LHeC energies for nuclear gluon distributions assumed to 1) evolve in x with DGLAP dynamics and have a spatial distribution proportional to the Glauber nuclear thickness function and 2) evolve in x and b according to the KLN prescription of CGC dynamics. We find that CGC physics predicts that the nuclear gluon density widens significantly as a function of x yielding diffractive peaks and minima that evolve dramatica…
