The COSMOS survey is a multiwavelength survey aimed to study the evolution of galaxies, AGN and the large scale structure. The XMM-COSMOS is a deep X-ray survey over the full 2 deg2 of the COSMOS area. It consists of 55 XMM-Newton pointings for a total exposure of ~1.5 Ms with an average vignetting corrected depth of 40 ks across the field of view and a sky coverage of 2.13 deg2. We present the catalogue of point-like X-ray sources detected with the EPIC CCD cameras, the logN-logS relations and the X-ray colour-colour diagrams. The analysis was performed in the 0.5-2 keV, 2-10 keV and 5-10 keV energy bands. The completeness of the catalogue as well as logN-logS have been calibrated using Monte Carlo simulations. The catalogs contains a total of 1887 unique sources detected in at least one band. The survey, that shows unprecedented homogeneity, has a flux limit of ~1.7x10-15 erg cm-2 s-1, ~9.3x10-15 erg cm-2 s-1 and ~1.3x10-14 erg cm-2 s-1 over 90% of the area (1.92 deg2) in the 0.5-2 keV, 2-10 keV and 5-10 keV energy band, respectively. Thanks to the rather homogeneous exposure over a large area, the derived logN-logS relations are very well determined over the flux range sampled by XMM-COSMOS. These relations have been compared with XRB synthesis models, which reproduce the observations with an agreement of ~10% in the 5-10 keV and 2-10 keV band, while in the 0.5-2 keV band the agreement is of the order of ~20%. The hard X-ray colors confirmed that the majority of the extragalactic sources, in a bright subsample, are actually Type I or Type II AGN. About 20% of the sources have X-ray luminosity typical of AGN (L_X >1042 erg/s) although they do not show any clear signature of nuclear activity in the optical spectrum.
XMM-Newton has observed the X-ray sky since early 2000. The XMM-Newton Survey Science Centre Consortium has published catalogues of X-ray and ultraviolet sources found serendipitously in the individual observations. This series is now augmented by a catalogue dedicated to X-ray sources detected in spatially overlapping XMM-Newton observations. The aim of this catalogue is to explore repeatedly observed sky regions. It thus makes use of the long(er) effective exposure time per sky area and offers the opportunity to investigate long-term flux variability directly through the source detection pro…
Sky surveys produce enormous quantities of data on extensive regions of the sky. The easiest way to access this information is through catalogues of standardised data products. {\em XMM-Newton} has been surveying the sky in the X-ray, ultra-violet, and optical bands for 20 years. The {\em XMM-Newton} Survey Science Centre has been producing standardised data products and catalogues to facilitate access to the serendipitous X-ray sky. Using improved calibration and enhanced software, we re-reduced all of the 14041 {\em XMM-Newton} X-ray observations, of which 11204 observations contained data w…
The XMM-Newton serendipitous survey. VII. The third XMM-Newton serendipitous source catalogue

We present an XMM-Newton catalogue of BL Lac X-ray, optical, and UV properties based on cross-correlation with the 1151 BL Lacs listed in the fifth edition of the Roma-BZCAT. We searched for the X-ray counterparts to these objects in the field of view of all pointed observations in the XMM-Newton archive over nearly 20 years of mission. The cross-correlation yields a total of 310 XMM-Newton fields which correspond to 103 different BL Lacs. We homogeneously analysed data from the three EPIC cameras (X-ray) and OM(optical/UV) using the XMM-Newton SAS software, and produced images, light curves, …
We search for transient sources in a sample of ULXs from the 3XMM-DR4 release of the XMM-Newton Serendipitous Source Catalogue in order to find candidate neutron star ULXs alternating between an accreting state and the propeller regime, in which the luminosity drops dramatically. By examining their fluxes and flux upper limits, we identify five ULXs that demonstrate long-term variability of over an order of magnitude. Using Chandra and Swift data to further characterise their light curves, we find that two of these sources are detected only once and could be X-ray binaries in outburst that onl…

The XMM-Newton Survey Science Centre Consortium (SSC) develops software in close collaboration with the Science Operations Centre to perform a pipeline analysis of all XMM-Newton observations. In celebration of the 20th launch anniversary, the SSC has compiled the 4th generation of serendipitous source catalogues, 4XMM. The catalogue described here, 4XMM-DR9s, explores sky areas that were observed more than once by XMM-Newton. It was constructed from simultaneous source detection on the overlapping observations, which were bundled in groups ("stacks"). Stacking leads to a higher sensitivity, r…
We present the identifications of a flux-limited sample of highly variable X-ray sources on long time-scales from the second catalogue of the XMM$-$Newton SLew survey (XMMSL2). The carefully constructed sample, comprising 265 sources (2.5 per cent) selected from the XMMSL2 clean catalogue, displayed X-ray variability of a factor of more than 10 in 0.2$-$2 keV compared to the ROSAT All Sky Survey. Of the sample sources, 94.3 per cent are identified. The identification procedure follows a series of cross-matches with astronomical data bases and multiwavelength catalogues to refine the source pos…
We carried out new observations of two fields in the northern ring of M31 with XMM-Newton with two exposures of 100 ks each and obtained a complete list of X-ray sources down to a sensitivity limit of ~7 x 10^34 erg s^-1 (0.5 - 2.0 keV). The major objective of the observing programme was the study of the hot phase of the ISM in M31. The analysis of the diffuse emission and the study of the ISM is presented in a separate paper. We analysed the spectral properties of all detected sources using hardness ratios and spectra if the statistics were high enough. We also checked for variability. We cro…
We report the results of follow-up investigations of a possible new thermally emitting isolated neutron star (INS), 4XMM J022141.5-735632, using observations from XMM-Newton and Spectrum Roentgen Gamma (SRG) eROSITA. The analysis is complemented by Legacy Survey imaging in the optical and near-infrared wavelengths. The X-ray source, the first to be targeted by XMM-Newton in an effort to identify new INS candidates from the fourth generation of the XMM-Newton serendipitous source catalogue Data Release 9 (4XMM-DR9), shows a remarkably soft energy distribution and a lack of catalogued counterpar…

We have created a new, clean catalogue of extragalactic non-nuclear X-ray sources by correlating the 3XMM-DR4 data release of the XMM-Newton Serendipitous Source Catalogue with the Third Reference Catalogue of Bright Galaxies and the Catalogue of Neighbouring Galaxies, using an improved version of the method presented in Walton et al. (2011). Our catalogue contains 1,314 sources, of which 384 are candidate ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs). The resulting catalogue improves upon previous catalogues in its handling of spurious detections by taking into account XMM-Newton quality flags. We estim…
High-resolution X-ray spectroscopy has advanced our understanding of the hot Universe by revealing physical properties like kinematics, temperature, and abundances of the astrophysical plasmas. Despite the technical and scientific achievements, the lack of scientific products at a level higher than count spectra is hampering full scientific exploitation of high-quality data. This paper introduces the Catalogue of Ionized Emission Lines Observed by the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (CIELO-RGS) onboard the XMM-Newton space observatory. The CIELO-RGS catalogue aims to facilitate the exploitatio…
Context. ULXs ($L_\textrm{X}>10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$) are excellent probes of accretion physics, star formation and IMBHs searches. As the sample size of X-ray data from modern observatories increases, producing extensive catalogues of ULXs and studying their collective properties is a possibility and a priority. Aims. We build a ULX catalogue based on one of the latest XMM-Newton releases, 4XMM-DR9, and the galaxy catalogue HECATE and study whether the properties of the expanded XMM-Newton ULX population are consistent with previous findings. Methods. We perform cross-matching between XMM-Newto…
The Second Swift-XRT Point Source catalogue offers a combination of sky coverage and sensitivity and presents an invaluable opportunity for transient discovery. We search the catalogue at the positions of inactive and active galaxies, and identify transient candidates by comparison with XMM-Newton and ROSAT. We recover 167 previously known transients and find 19 sources consistent with being new sources, estimating a completeness of $\sim65\%$. These 19 new sources are split approximately equally between inactive and active hosts and their peak X-ray luminosities span $\sim 10^{42} - 10^{47}$ …
Context: Finding Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) behind the Magellanic Clouds (MCs) is difficult because of the high stellar density in these fields. Although the first AGN behind the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) were reported in the 1980s, it is only recently that the number of AGN known behind the SMC has increased by several orders of magnitude. Aims: The mid-infrared colour selection technique has been proven to be an efficient means of identifying AGN, especially obscured sources. The X-ray regime is complementary in this regard and we use XMM-Newton observations to support the identificatio…
We present a new, multi-mission catalogue of ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) candidates, based on recent data releases from each of the XMM-Newton, Swift and Chandra observatories (the 4XMM-DR10, 2SXPS and CSC2 catalogues, respectively). This has been compiled by cross-correlating each of these X-ray archives with a large sample of galaxies primarily drawn from the HyperLEDA archive. Significant efforts have been made to clean the sample of known non-ULX contaminants (e.g. foreground stars, background AGN, supernovae), and also to identify ULX candidates that are common to the different X-ray…
This work presents the catalogue of optical spectral properties for all X-ray selected SPIDERS active galactic nuclei (AGN) up to SDSS DR14. SPIDERS (SPectroscopic IDentification of eROSITA Sources) is an SDSS-IV programme that is currently conducting optical spectroscopy of the counterparts to the X-ray selected sources detected in the ROSAT all-sky survey and the XMM-Newton slew survey in the footprint of the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS). The SPIDERS DR14 sample is the largest sample of X-ray selected AGN with optical spectroscopic follow-up to date. The catalogue…
XMM-Newton has produced an extensive X-ray source catalogue in which the standard pipeline determines the variability of sufficiently bright sources through chi-square and fractional variability tests. Faint sources, however, are not automatically checked for variability, thus overlooking faint, short timescale transients. Our goal is to find new faint, fast transients in XMM-Newton EPIC-pn observations. To that end we have created the EPIC-pn XMM-Newton Outburst Detector (EXOD) algorithm, which we run on the EPIC-pn data available in the 3XMM-DR8 catalogue. In EXOD, we compute the whole-field…
The X-ray Multi-mirror Mission (XMM-Newton) provides simultaneous non-dispersive spectroscopic X-ray imaging and timing, medium resolution dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and optical/UV imaging, spectroscopy and timing. In combination, the imaging cameras offer an effective area over the energy range from 150 eV to 12 keV of up to 2500 cm$^2$ at 1.5 keV and $\sim$1800 cm$^2$ at 5 keV. The gratings cover an energy range from 0.4 keV to 2.2 keV with a combined effective area of up to 120 cm$^2$ at 0.8 keV. XMM-Newton offers unique opportunities for a wide variety of sensitive X-ray observations ac…
Since its launch in 1999, the XMM-\textit{Newton} mission has compiled the largest catalogue of serendipitous X-ray sources, with the 3XMM being the third version of this catalogue. This is because of the combination of a large effective area (5000 $\rm cm^2$ at 1 keV) and a wide field of view (30 arcmin). The 3XMM-DR6 catalogue contains about 470,000 unique X-ray sources over an area of 982 $\rm deg^2$. A significant fraction of these (100,178 sources) have reliable optical, near/mid-IR counterparts in the SDSS, PANSTARRS, VIDEO, UKIDSS and WISE surveys. In a previous paper we have presented …
We aim to identify new intermediate polars (IPs) in XMM-Newton observations from a list of promising candidates. By selecting targets not previously known to be X-ray bright we aim to uncover evidence for an X-ray underluminous IP subpopulation. We performed period searches on the XMM-Newton X-ray and optical data of our targets to seek both the spin and orbital periods, which differ in IPs. We also investigated the X-ray spectra to find the hot plasma emission shown by these objects. With archival Swift data we coarsely investigated the long-term X-ray variability, and with archival optical d…

We present the first comparison between properties of clusters of galaxies detected by the eROSITA Final Equatorial-Depth Survey (eFEDS) and the XMM Cluster Survey (XCS). We have compared, in an ensemble fashion, properties from the eFEDS X-ray cluster catalogue with those from the Ultimate XMM eXtragaLactic (XXL) survey project (XXL-100-GC). We find the distributions of redshift and X-ray temperature ($T_{\rm X}$) to be broadly similar between the two surveys, with a larger proportion of clusters above 4 keV in the XXL-100-GC sample. We find 62 eFEDS cluster candidates with XMM data (eFEDS-XM…
