Context: An unexpectedly complex polyatomic chemistry exists in diffuse clouds, allowing detection of species such as C2H, C3H2, H2CO and NH3 which have relative abundances that are strikingly similar to those inferred toward the dark cloud TMC-1
Aims: We probe the limits of complexity of diffuse cloud polyatomic chemistry.
Methods: We used the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer to search for galactic absorption from low-lying J=2-1 rotational transitions of A- and E-CH3OH near 96.740 GHz and used the VLA to search for the J=8-7 transition of HC5N at 21.3 GHz.
Results: Neither CH3OH nor HC5N were detected at column densities well below those of all polyatomics known in diffuse clouds and somewhat below the levels expected from comparison with TMC-1. The HCN/HC5N ratio is at least 3-10 times higher in diffuse gas than toward TMC-1.
Conclusions: It is possible to go to the well once (or more) too often
An analysis of absorption profiles of the $λ$6614 diffuse interstellar band recorded along the lines-of-sight towards HD 179406 (20 Aql) and HD 147889 is described. The difference in band shape is attributed to the degree of internal excitation of the carrier, which is principally due to vibrational hot bands although an electronic component may also be present. The results are discussed with respect to other models of diffuse band spectral line shape.
UV absorption studies with FUSE have observed H2 molecular gas in translucent and diffuse clouds. Observations of the 158 micron [C II] fine structure line with Herschel also trace the same H2 molecular gas in emission. We present [C II] observations along 27 lines of sight (LOSs) towards target stars of which 25 have FUSE H2 UV absorption. We detect [C II] emission features in all but one target LOS. For three Target LOSs, which are close to the Galactic plane, we also present position-velocity maps of [C II] emission observed by HIFI in on-the-fly spectral line mapping. We use the velocity r…
Spectra of the archetypal Type II Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068 in a narrow wavelength interval near 3.7 microns have revealed a weak absorption feature due to two lines of the molecular ion H3+. The observed wavelength of the feature corresponds to velocity of -70 km/s relative to the systemic velocity of the galaxy, implying an outward flow from the nucleus along the line of sight. The absorption by H3+ along with the previously known broad hydrocarbon absorption at 3.4~microns probably are formed in diffuse gas that is in close proximity to the continuum source, i.e. within a few tens of parsecs …

We report the first detection of C$^{15}$N in diffuse molecular gas from a detailed examination of CN absorption lines in archival VLT/UVES spectra of stars probing local diffuse clouds. Absorption from the C$^{15}$N isotopologue is confidently detected (at $\gtrsim4σ$) in three out of the four directions studied and appears as a very weak feature between the main $^{12}$CN and $^{13}$CN absorption components. Column densities for each CN isotopologue are determined through profile fitting, after accounting for weak additional line-of-sight components of $^{12}$CN, which are seen in the absorp…
Using galaxies as background light sources to map intervening Lya absorption is a novel approach to study the interplay among galaxies, the circum-galactic medium (CGM), and the intergalactic medium (IGM). Introducing a new measure of z = 3.1$ HI Lya absorption relative to the cosmic mean, Delta_NB497, estimated from photometric data of star-forming galaxies at 3.3 < z < 3.5, we have made two-dimensional Delta_NB497 maps in the z = 3.1 SSA22 proto-cluster region and two control fields (SXDS and GOODS-N fields) with a spatial resolution of ~ 5 comoving Mpc. The Delta_NB497 measurements in the S…
The sightline toward the luminous blue hypergiant Cyg OB2-12 is widely used in studying interstellar dust on account of its large extinction ($A_V \simeq 10$ mag) and the fact that this extinction appears to be dominated by dust typical of the diffuse interstellar medium. We present a new analysis of archival ISO-SWS and Spitzer IRS observations of Cyg OB2-12 using a model of the emission from the star and its stellar wind to determine the total extinction $A_λ$ from 2.4--37 $μ$m. In addition to the prominent 9.7 and 18 $μ$m silicate features, we robustly detect absorption features associated …
Context: The bulk of the Molecular gas in the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) of the Galactic center region shows warm kinetic temperatures, ranging from $>20$ K in the coldest and densest regions (n$\sim 10^{4-5}$ cm$^{-3}$) up to more than 100 K for densities of about n$\sim 10^3$ cm$^{-3}$. Recently, a more diffuse, hotter ($n \sim 100$ cm$^{-3}$, $T\sim 250$ K) gas component was discovered through absorption observations of H$_3^+$. This component may be widespread in the Galactic center, and low density gas detectable in absorption may be present even outside the CMZ along sightlines crossin…
The 9.7-micron silicate absorption profile in the interstellar medium provides important information on the physical and chemical composition of interstellar dust grains. Measurements in the Milky Way have shown that the profile in the diffuse interstellar medium is very similar to the amorphous silicate profiles found in circumstellar dust shells around late M stars, and narrower than the silicate profile in denser star-forming regions. Here, we investigate the silicate absorption profile towards the very heavily obscured nucleus of NGC 4418, the galaxy with the deepest known silicate absorpt…
Ionized carbon is the main gas-phase reservoir of carbon in the neutral diffuse interstellar medium and its 158 micron fine structure transition [CII] is the most important cooling line of the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM). We combine [CII] absorption and emission spectroscopy to gain an improved understanding of physical conditions in the different phases of the ISM. We present high resolution [CII] spectra obtained with the Herschel/HIFI instrument towards bright dust continuum sources regions in the Galactic plane, probing simultaneously the diffuse gas along the line of sight and the b…
Diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) trace warm neutral and weakly-ionized diffuse interstellar medium (ISM). Here we present a dedicated, high signal-to-noise spectroscopic study of two of the strongest DIBs, at 5780 and 5797 Å, in optical spectra of 666 early-type stars in the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds, along with measurements of the atomic Na\,{\sc i}\,D and Ca\,{\sc ii}\,K lines. The resulting maps show for the first time the distribution of DIB carriers across large swathes of galaxies, as well as the foreground Milky Way ISM. We confirm the association of the 5797 Å DIB with neutral…
Up to now, mostly relatively simple molecules have been detected in interstellar diffuse molecular clouds in our galaxy, but more complex species have been reported in the diffuse/translucent medium of a z = 0.89 spiral galaxy. We aim at searching for complex organic molecules (COMs) in diffuse molecular clouds along the line of sight to Sgr B2(N), taking advantage of the high sensitivity and angular resolution of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). We use data acquired as part of the EMoCA survey performed with ALMA. To analyse the absorption features of the molecules det…
Context. Insight into the conditions that drive the physics and chemistry in interstellar clouds is gained from determining the abundance and charge state of their components. Aims. We propose an evaluation of the C60:C60+ ratio in diffuse and translucent interstellar clouds that exploits electronic absorption bands so as not to rely on ambiguous IR emission measurements. Methods. The ratio is determined by analyzing archival spectra and literature data. Information on the cation population is obtained from published characteristics of the main diffuse interstellar bands attributed to C60+ and…
We present Jansky Very Large Array observations of 20 - 37 GHz absorption lines from nearby Galactic diffuse molecular gas seen against four cosmologically-distant compact radio continuum sources. The main new observational results are that \linearC3H\ and \methCN\ are ubiqitous in the local diffuse molecular interstellar medium at \AV\ $\la 1$ while HC$_3$N was seen only toward B0415 at \AV\ $>$ 4 mag. The linear/cyclic ratio is much larger in C$_3$H than in C$_3$\HH\ and the ratio \methCN/HCN is enhanced compared to TMC-1, although not as much as toward the Horsehead Nebula. More consequenti…
Ultra diffuse galaxies are a population of extended galaxies but with relatively low luminosities. The origin of these objects remains unclear, largely due to the observational challenges of the low surface brightness Universe. We present here a detailed stellar population analysis of a relatively isolated UDG, DGSAT I, based on spectroscopic data from the Keck Cosmic Web Imager integral field unit. The star formation history of DGSAT I seems to be extended, with a mean luminosity-weighted age of ~3 Gyr, in agreement with previous photometric studies. However, we find a very high [Mg/Fe] abund…
% aims To compare information gained from radio and optical absorption line profiles from the diffuse interstellar medium along the same sightline % methods We compare new and existing 21cm HI and 3.4mm HCO+ profiles with profiles of the optical tracers CaII, NaI, and KI from an unpublished thesis of Tappe (2004) %results The atoms traced optically are all heavily depleted compared to a Solar abundance and only the integrated optical depths of HI and HCO+ correlate well with E(B-V). HCO+ is the species with by far the most limited kinematic distribution and the narrowest lines followed in orde…
The content of interstellar clouds, in particular the inventory of diffuse molecular gas, remains uncertain. We identified a sample of isolated clouds, approximately 100 solar masses in size, and used the dust content to estimate the total amount of gas. In Paper 1, the total inferred gas content was found significantly larger than that seen in 21-cm emission measurements of atomic hydrogen. In this paper we test the hypothesis that the apparent excess 'dark' gas is cold atomic hydrogen, which would be evident in absorption but not in emission due to line saturation. The results show there is …
There is a robust polyatomic chemistry in diffuse, partially-molecular interstellar gas that is readily accessible in absorption at radio/mm/sub-mm wavelengths. Accurate column densities are derived owing to the weak internal excitation, so relative molecular abundances are well known with respect to each other but not with respect to H2. Here we consider the use of proxies for hydrogen column densities N(H2) and N(H) = N(HI)+2N(H2) based on measurements of HCO+ absorption and CO emission and absorption, and we compare these with results obtained by others when observing HI, H2 and CO toward s…
Inverse Raman scattering and the diffuse interstellar bands: an exploration of the systemic interconnections between spontaneous and inverse Raman scattering and extended red emission, Red Rectangle bands, and diffuse interstellar bands
Aims. We aim to understand the unexpected presence of mm-wave molecular absorption at -200 \kms $< {\rm v} < -140$ \kms\ in a direction that is well away from regions of the Galactic bulge where CO emission at such velocities is prominent. Methods. We compared 89 GHz Cycle 2 ALMA absorption spectra of \hcop, HCN, and HNC toward the extragalactic continuum source B1741-312 at l=-2.14\degr, b=-1.00\degr\ with existing CO, H I, and dust emission and absorption measurements. We placed the atomic and molecular gas in the bulge and disk using circular and non-circular galactic kinematics, deriving N…
Anomalous Diffuse Interstellar Bands in the Spectrum of Herschel 36. I. Observations of Rotationally Excited CH and CH+ Absorption and Strong, Extended Redward Wings on Several DIBs
We have complemented existing observations of HI absorption with new observations of HCO$^+$, C$_2$H, HCN, and HNC absorption from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and the Northern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) in the direction of 20 background radio continuum sources with $4^\circ \leq |b| \leq 81^\circ$ to constrain the atomic gas conditions that are suitable for the formation of diffuse molecular gas. We find that these molecular species form along sightlines where $A_V \gtrsim 0.25$, consistent with the threshold for the HI-to-H$_2$ transition at solar metallicit…
Context. Tens of light hydrides and small molecules have now been detected over several hundreds sight lines sampling the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM) in both the Solar neighbourhood and the inner Galactic disk. They provide unprecedented statistics on the first steps of chemistry in the diffuse gas. Aims. These new data confirm the limitations of the traditional chemical pathways driven by the UV photons and the cosmic rays (CR) and the need for additional energy sources, such as turbulent dissipation, to open highly endoenergetic formation routes. The goal of the present paper is to fur…
Aims: The large abundances of CH$^+$ in the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM) are a long standing issue of our understanding of the thermodynamical and chemical states of the gas. We investigate, here, the formation of CH+ in turbulent and multiphase environments, where the heating of the gas is almost solely driven by the photoelectric effect. Methods: The diffuse ISM is simulated using the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) code RAMSES which self-consistently computes the dynamical and thermal evolution of the gas along with the time-dependent evolutions of the abundances of H$^+$, H, and H$_2$. The …
To study the usefulness of \CFP\ as a tracer of the regions where C\p\ and \HH\ coexist in the interstellar medium. We used the Plateau de Bure Interferometer to synthesize \CFP\ J=1-0 absorption at 102.6 GHz toward the core of the distant HII region W49N at l = 43.2\degr, b=0.0\degr, and we modeled the fluorine chemistry in diffuse/translucent molecular gas. We detected \CFP\ absorption over a broad range of velocity showing that \CFP\ is widespread in the \HH-bearing Galactic disk gas. Originally detected in dense gas in the Orion Bar and Horsehead PDR, \CFP\ was subsequently detected in abs…
The molecular carriers of the ubiquitous absorption features called the diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) have eluded identification for many decades, in part because of the enormous parameter space spanned by the candidates and the limited set of empirical constraints afforded by observations in the diffuse interstellar medium. Detection of these features in circumstellar regions, where the environmental properties are more easily measured, is thus a promising approach to understanding the chemical nature of the carriers themselves. Here, using high resolution spectra from the APOGEE survey, …
Extracting interstellar diffuse absorption bands from cool star spectra: Application to bulge clump giants in Baade's window
As the Universe evolves, it develops a web of filamentary structure of matter. This cosmic web is filled with gas, with the most diffuse gas lying in the intergalactic regions. At low redshift, the gas is predominantly warm-hot, and one of its best tracers is X-ray absorption in sightlines to background quasars. In this Chapter, we present the theoretical background for the formation of the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) and present the physical properties of the WHIM from cosmological hydro-dynamical simulations. We discuss the feasibility of detecting the WHIM with X-ray absorption lin…
We studied the statistical properties of the HI-to-H$_2$ transition observed in absorption in the local diffuse and multiphase ISM to identify the physical processes controlling the probability of occurrence of any line of sight. The turbulent diffuse ISM is modeled using the RAMSES code, which includes detailed treatments of the magnetohydrodynamics, the thermal evolution of the gas, and the chemistry of H$_2$. The impacts of the UV radiation field, the mean density, the turbulent forcing, the integral scale, the magnetic field, and the gravity on the molecular content of the gas are explored…
Enhanced ionizing radiation in close proximity to redshift $z\gtrsim 6$ quasars creates short windows of intergalactic Ly$α$ transmission blueward of the quasar Ly$α$ emission lines. The majority of these Ly$α$ near-zones are consistent with quasars that have optically/UV bright lifetimes of $t_{\rm Q}\sim 10^{5}-10^{7}\rm\,yr$. However, lifetimes as short as $t_{\rm Q}\lesssim 10^{4}\rm\,yr$ appear to be required by the smallest Ly$α$ near-zones. These short lifetimes present an apparent challenge for the growth of $\sim 10^{9}\rm\,M_{\odot}$ black holes at $z\gtrsim 6$. Accretion over longer…
The chemistry of the diffuse interstellar medium is driven by the combined influences of cosmic rays, ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and turbulence. Previously detected at the outer edges of photodissociation regions (PDRs) and formed from the reaction of C+ and OH, CO+ is the main chemical precursor of HCO+ and CO in a thermal, cosmic-ray, and UV-driven chemistry. Our aim was to test whether the thermal cosmic-ray and UV-driven chemistry is producing CO in diffuse interstellar molecular gas through the intermediate formation of CO+ We searched for CO+ absorption with the Atacama Large Millimeter…
The sources behind numerous key diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) remain elusive, and thus evidence is presented here that a family of seven anionic hydrogen atomic clusters (H(-)2n+1, n = 1 to 7) are pertinent contributors. Configuration interaction calculations show hat these charge-induced dipole clusters are stable at temperatures characteristic of the interstellar medium, and emerge from the most abundant element in the Universe. The clusters' spectra yield 25 absorption optical lines that align with observed DIBs to within the computational uncertainties. The absorption bands are due to …
We present a study of the elemental depletion in the interstellar medium. We combined the results of a Galatic model describing the gas physical conditions during the formation of dense cores with a full-gas-grain chemical model. During the transition between diffuse and dense medium, the reservoirs of elements, initially atomic in the gas, are gradually depleted on dust grains (with a phase of neutralisation for those which are ions). This process becomes efficient when the density is larger than 100~cm$^{-3}$. If the dense material goes back into diffuse conditions, these elements are brough…
Recent submillimeter and far-infrared wavelength observations of absorption in the rotational ground-state lines of various simple molecules against distant Galactic continuum sources have opened the possibility of studying the chemistry of diffuse molecular clouds throughout the Milky Way. In order to calculate abundances, the column densities of molecular and atomic hydrogen, HI, must be known. We aim at determining the atomic hydrogen column densities for diffuse clouds located on the sight lines toward a sample of prominent high-mass star-forming regions that were intensely studied with th…
We map the interstellar medium (ISM) including the diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) in absorption toward the globular cluster NGC 6397 using VLT/MUSE. This pilot study demonstrates the power of MUSE for mapping the local ISM on very small scales which provides a new window for ISM observations. Assuming the absorbers are located at the rim of the Local Bubble we trace small-scale variations in NaI and KI as well as in several DIBs structures on the order of mpc (milliparsec, a few thousand AU). The sightlines defined by binned stellar spectra are separated by only a few arcseconds and we prob…
The transition between atomic and molecular hydrogen is associated with important changes in the structure of interstellar clouds, and marks the beginning of interstellar chemistry. Because of the relatively simple networks controlling their abundances, molecular ions are usually good probes of the underlying physical conditions including for instance the fraction of gas in molecular form or the fractional ionization. In this paper we focus on three possible probes of the molecular hydrogen column density, HCO+, HOC+, and CF+. We presented high sensitivity ALMA absorption data toward a sample …
