Taking the extremal limit of a non-extremal Reissner-Nordström black hole (by externally varying the mass or charge), the region between the inner and outer event horizons experiences an interesting fate -- while this region is absent in the extremal case, it does not disappear in the extremal limit but rather approaches a patch of $AdS_2\times S^2$. In other words, the approach to extremality is not continuous, as the non-extremal Reissner-Nordström solution splits into two spacetimes at extremality: an extremal black hole and a disconnected $AdS$ space. We suggest that the unusual nature of this limit may help in understanding the entropy of extremal black holes.
The Hawking Beckenstein entropy of near extremal fivebranes is calculated in terms of a gas of strings living on the fivebrane. These fivebranes can also be viewed as near extremal black holes in five dimensions.
We show that the exact entropy and the temperature (including coeffecient) of non-extremal black p-brane are calculated by maximizing the entropy under several assumptions. We argue the relation of those assumptions and certain Dp-D(p-2) system in compactified space.
String theory is used to count microstates of four-dimensional extremal black holes in compactifications with $N=4$ and $N=8$ supersymmetry. The result agrees for large charges with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy.
We present a consolidated manual of Euclidean gravity approaches for finding the logarithmic corrections to the entropy of the full Kerr-Newman family of black holes in both extremal and non-extremal limits. Seeley-DeWitt coefficients for the quadratic fluctuations of a concern gravity theory appear to be the key ingredients in this manual. Following the manual, we calculate the first three Seeley-DeWitt coefficients and logarithmic corrections to the entropy of extremal and non-extremal black holes in a generalized Einstein-Maxwell theory minimally-coupled to additional massless scalar, vecto…
We examine in details the entropy function formalism for non-extremal D3, M2, and M5-branes that their throat approximation is given by Schwarzschild black hole in AdS_{p+2} \times S^{D-(p+2)}. We show that even though there is no attractor mechanism in the non-extremal black holes/branes, the entropy function formalism does work and the entropy is given by the entropy function at its saddle point.
We consider the entropy of four-dimensional near-extremal N=2 black holes. Without R^2-terms, the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy formula has the structure of the extremal black holes entropy with a shift of the charges depending on the non-extremality parameter and the moduli at infinity. We derive a generalized Wald entropy formula for non-extremal N=2 black holes with R^2-terms. We construct a class of small near-extremal horizon solutions with R^2-terms. In this case the entropy is the same as in the extremal case to order O(mu^2), and does not exhibit the charge shift behavior.
We use the relation between extremal black hole solutions in five- and in four-dimensional N=2 supergravity theories with cubic prepotentials to define the entropy function for extremal black holes with one angular momentum in five dimensions. We construct two types of solutions to the associated attractor equations.
Entropy for two dimensional extremal black holes is computed explicitly in a finite-space formulation of the black hole thermodynamics and is shown to be zero {\it locally}. Our results are in conformity with the recent one by Hawking et al in four dimensions.
We generalize the entropy function formalism to five-dimensional and four-dimensional non-extremal black holes in string theory. In the near horizon limit, these black holes have BTZ metric as part of the spacetime geometry. It is shown that the entropy function formalism also works very well for these non-extremal black holes and it can reproduce the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of these black holes in ten dimensions and lower dimensions.
For extremal charged black holes, the thermodynamic entropy is proportional not to the area but to the mass or charges. This is demonstrated here for dyonic extremal black hole solutions of string theory. It is pointed out that these solutions have zero classical action although the area is nonzero. By combining the general form of the entropy allowed by thermodynamics with recent observations in the literature it is possible to fix the entropy almost completely.
We show that the entropy of extremal $D=4$ Reissner--Nordstrom black holes can be computed from horizon CFTs with central charges and conformal weights fixed by the dimensionless Rindler energy. This is possible in the simultaneous extremal and near horizon limit of the black hole which takes the geometry to an $AdS_2$ Rindler space with finite temperature. The CFT description of dilatonic $AdS_2$ black holes, obtained from extremal ones by dimensional reduction, lead to exactly the same CFT states.
We provide a realization of the AdS$_2$/CFT$_1$ correspondence in terms of asymptotic symmetries of the AdS$_2\times$S$^1$ and AdS$_2\times$S$^2$ geometries arising in near-extremal BTZ and Reissner-Nordström black holes. Cardy's formula exactly accounts for the deviation of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy from extremality. We also argue that this result can be extended to more general black holes near extremality.
We find R^4 correction to the non-extremal D1D5P solution of the supergravity by exactly solving the differential equations of motion and by using the entropy function formalism. In both cases, we find the same correction to the supergravity solution. We then calculate the correction to the entropy using the free energy method and the entropy function formalism. The results are the same.
We recover the properties of a wide class of far from extremal charged black branes from the properties of near extremal black branes, generalizing the results of Danielsson, Guijosa and Kruczenski.
The problem of asymptotic density of quantum states of fundamental extended objects is revised in detail. We argue that in the near-extremal regime the fundamental $p$-brane approach can yield a microscopic interpretation of the black hole entropy. The asymptotic behavior of partition functions, associated with the $p$-branes, and the near-extremal entropy of five-dimensional black holes are explicitly calculated.
We have obtained the equation of the extremal hypersurface by considering the Jacobson-Myers functional and computed the entanglement entropy. In this context, we show that the higher derivative corrected extremal surfaces can not penetrate the horizon. Also, we have studied the entanglement temperature and entanglement entropy for low excited states for such higher derivative theories when the entangling region is of the strip type.
Based on the entropy function formalism, we consider the extremal Kerr-(anti-)de Sitter black holes in 4-dimensions. Solving differential equations exactly, which are obtained by extremizing the entropy function, we find agreement of the result with Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. Concerning the higher derivative corrections, we extend the computation to the case with Gauss-Bonnet term.
Assuming gauge theory realization at the boundary, we show that the viscosity to entropy ratio is 1/(4 pi) where the bulk is represented by a large class of extremal black holes in anti-de Sitter space. In particular, this class includes multiple R-charged black holes in various dimensions.
We study the entropy of extremal warped black hole obtained from the topologically massive gravity with a negative cosmological constant of $Λ=-1/l^2$. We compare the entropy $S_e=πα/3G$ from the Wald formalism with $S_w=πl u /3G$ from the entropy function approach. These are the same if $α=l u$. Also we obtain the same Cardy formula when $J_e= l^3 q$ with $J_e$ the angular momentum and $q$ the conserved quantity.
In this note, we use entanglement entropy as a tool to explore the universal properties of CFTs dual to extremal BTZ black holes. We demonstrate that the entanglement entropies computed in the CFTs at the boundary of the extremal BTZ and the boundary of the near-horizon limit of the extremal BTZ are in perfect agreement and have the form appropriate to a two-dimensional CFT with only the chiral part excited and the anti-chiral in the ground state. Furthermore, we analyze the universal limits of the entanglement entropy and recover the correct value of the thermal entropy for large entangling i…
String theory is used to compute the microscopic entropy for several examples of black holes in compactifications with $N=2$ supersymmetry. Agreement with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy and the moduli-independent $N=2$ area formula is found in all cases.
We calculate the entropy of 4-charge extremal black holes in Type IIA supersting theory by using Sen's entropy function method. Using the low energy effective actions in both $10D$ and 4D, we find precise agreements with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the black hole. We also calculate the higher order corrections to the entropy and find that they depend on the exact form of the higher order corrections to the effective action.
We analyze the asymptotic symmetries of near extremal Kerr black holes in four dimensions using the AdS_2/CFT_1 correspondence. We find a Virasoro algebra with central charge c_R=12J that is independent from the Virasoro algebra (with the same central charge) that acts on the degenerate ground state. The energy of the excitations is computed as well, and we can use Cardy's formula to determine the near extremal entropy. Our result is consistent with the Bekenstein-Hawking area law for near extremal Kerr black holes.
In this paper we elaborate on the relation between the entropy formula of Wald and the "entropy function" method proposed by A. Sen. For spherically symmetric extremal black holes, it is shown that the expression of extremal black hole entropy given by A. Sen can be derived from the general entropy definition of Wald, without help of the treatment of rescaling the AdS_2 part of near horizon geometry of extremal black holes. In our procedure, we only require that the surface gravity approaches to zero, and it is easy to understand the Legendre transformation of f, the integration of Lagrangian …
We apply the entropy function formalism to non-extremal D1D5 and D2D6NS5-branes whose throat approximation is given by the Schwarzschild black hole in AdS_3\times S^3\times T^4 and AdS_3\times S^2\times S^1\times T^4, respectively. We find the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy and the (alpha')^3R^4 corrections from the value of the entropy function at its saddle point. While the higher derivative terms have no effect on the temperature, they decrease the value of the entropy.
I compute the entanglement entropy of a strongly coupled 2+1d quantum field theory containing fermions at finite density using gauge/gravity duality. The dual geometry is an extremal black hole in 3+1d Einstein-Maxwell theory. This system was recently shown to exhibit non-Fermi liquid behavior, but the leading geometrical contribution to the entanglement entropy does not produce an expected violation of the boundary law. I discuss this negative result in the context of attempts to find highly entangled states of quantum matter.
Following the work of Sen, we consider the correspondence between extremal black holes and string states in the context of the entropy. We obtain and study properties of electrically charged black hole backgrounds of tree level heterotic string theory compactified on a $p$ dimensional torus, for $D=(10-p)=4 \ldots 9$. We study in particular a one--parameter extremal class of these black holes, the members of which are shown to be supersymmetric. We find that the entropy of such an extremal black hole, when calculated at the stringy stretched horizon, scales in such a way that it can be identif…
We consider the one-loop corrected geometry and thermodynamics of a rotating BTZ black hole by way of a dimensionally reduced dilaton model. The analysis begins with a comprehensive study of the non-extremal solution after which two different methods are invoked to study the extremal case. The first approach considers the extremal limit of the non-extremal calculations, whereas the second treatment is based on the following conjecture: extremal and non-extremal black holes ae qualitatively distinct entities. We show that only the latter method yields regularity and consistency at the one-loop …
The relation between entropy and the area of the event horizon of a quantum blackhole in four dimensions is derived. The Reissner-Nordstrom metric for a non-rotating, charged black hole is shown to be modified by the addition of a new $\frac{1}{r^3}$ term arising from the strong interaction. The resulting entropy-area relation agrees with the Bekenstein-Hawking relation.
Freudenthal duality (F-duality), an anti-involution of charge vectors keep the entropy and attractor solutions invariant for an extremal supersymmetric black hole. In this paper, we analyze the effect of F-duality on the entropy of a near-extremal $STU$ black hole in $\mathcal{N}=2$ ungauged, four-dimensional supergravity. We consider double-extremal black holes, whose attractor solutions are fixed in terms of the black hole charges throughout the moduli space. It is well known that JT gravity governs the dynamics of the near-horizon regions of higher dimensional, near-extremal black holes. Ow…
In this paper we apply the entropy function formalism to the two-dimensional black hole which come from the compactification of the heterotic string theory with the dilaton coupling function. We find the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy from the value of the entropy function at its saddle point. Also we consider higher derivative terms. After that we apply the entropy function formalism to the Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) model where we consider the effect of string-loop to this model.
The entropy of generic non-extremal dyonic black holes in the STU model has been shown to admit a remarkably universal form. The missing invariant in the formula was recently identified by Sárosi using the formalism of quantum entanglement as well as a higher dimensional embedding of the U-duality group. Here, we express the non-extremal black hole entropy in the STU model in terms of U-duality covariant tensors. We then provide the extension to the most general non-extremal black hole of ungauged $\mathcal N= 8$ supergravity using $E_{7(7)}$ invariants. We also conjecture a generalization for…
The first quantum corrections to the entropy for an eternal 4-dimensional extremal Reissner-Nordström black hole is investigated at one-loop level, in the large mass limit of the black hole, making use of the conformal techniques related to the optical metric. A leading cubic horizon divergence is found and other divergences appear due to the singular nature of the optical manifold. The area law is shown to be violated.
A seven parameter family of five-dimensional black hole solutions depending on mass, two angular momenta, three charges and the asymptotic value of a scalar field is constructed. The entropy is computed as a function of these parameters both from the Bekenstein-Hawking formula and from the degeneracies of the corresponding D-brane states in string theory. The expressions agree at and to leading order away from extremality.
From the black hole thermodynamics point of view, we show that the entropy function $\mathbf{f}$ and the free energy $F$ are related via $\mathbf{f}=e_{I}q_{I}+Ω_Hq_I{A_ϕ^I}'-\frac{\partial F}{\partial r} |_{r_{H}}$. Assuming the entropy function is known for extremal black holes, we propose an approach to calculate the entropy of non-extremal cases by slightly moving the extremal black hole geometry from extremality. The entropy of non-extremal $D1D5$- and $D1D5p$-branes in the presence of higher derivative corrections are computed as concrete examples. An attempt has also been made to explai…
It has recently been shown that for certain classical non-dilatonic $p$-branes, the entropy and temperature satisfy the ideal-gas relation $S\sim T^{p}$ in the near-extremal regime. We extend these results to cases where the dilaton is non-vanishing, but nevertheless remains finite on the horizon in the extremal limit, showing that the ideal-gas relation is again satisfied. At the classical level, however, this relation does break down if the dilaton diverges on the horizon. We argue that such a divergence indicates the breakdown of the validity of the classical approximation, and that by taki…
We study the low temperature expansion of the first law of thermodynamics for near-extremal black holes. We show that for extremal black holes with non-vanishing entropy, the leading order contribution yields an expression for their extremal entropy in agreement with the entropy function result and the Cardy formula for the entropy of a two dimensional chiral conformal field theory (CFT). When their entropy vanishes due to the vanishing of a one-cycle on the horizon, such leading contribution is always compatible with the first law satisfied by a BTZ black hole. These results are universal and…
We construct a four-dimensional BPS saturated heterotic string solution from the Taub-NUT solution. It is a non-extremal black hole solution since its Euler number is non-zero. We evaluate its black hole entropy semiclassically. We discuss the relation between the black hole entropy and the degeneracy of string states. The entropy of our string solution can be understood as the microscopic entropy which counts the elementary string states without any complications.
We review some results on the connection among supergravity central charges, BPS states and Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. In particular, N=2 supergravity in four dimensions is studied in detail. For higher N supergravities we just give an account of the general theory specializing the discussion to the N=8 case when one half of supersymmetry is preserved. We stress the fact that for extremal supergravity black holes the entropy formula is topological, that is the entropy turns out to be a moduli independent quantity and can be written in terms of invariants of the duality group of the supergravi…
We investigate the five and six-dimensional black strings within Einstein-Maxwell theory. The extremal black strings are endowed with the null Killing symmetry. We study the propagation of Einstein-Maxwell modes in the extremal black string background by using this symmetry. It turns out that one graviton is a propagating mode, while both the Maxwell $F$ and three-form $H$ fields are non-propagating modes. Further we discuss the stability and classical hair of the extremal black strings.
We discuss the two-dimensional (2D), $ε<2$ extremal ground states of charged black hole. Here $ε$ is the dilaton coupling parameter for the Maxwell term. The complete analysis of stability is carried out for all these extremal black holes. It is found that they are all unstable. To understand this instability, we study the non-extremal charged black hole with two (inner and outer) horizons. The extremal black holes appear when two horizons coalesce. It conjectures that the instability originates from the inner horizon.
In a recent paper (hep-th/0111091), the near-extremal thermodynamics of a 4-dimensional Reissner-Nordstrom black hole had been considered. In the current letter, we extend this prior treatment to the more general case of a spherically symmetric, charged black hole of arbitrary dimensionality. After summarizing the earlier work, we demonstrate a duality that exists between the near-extremal sector of spherically symmetric black holes and Jackiw-Teitelboim theory. On the basis of this correspondence, we argue that back-reaction effects prohibit any of these ``RN-like'' black holes from reaching …
The AdS_2\timesS^2 geometry of near-extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black holes can be described by an effective solvable model which allows to follow analytically the evaporation process including the backreaction. We find that an infinite amount of time is required for the black hole to decay to extremality.
We present the main features of the physics of extremal black holes embedded in supersymmetric theories of gravitation, with a detailed analysis of the attractor mechanism for BPS and non-BPS black-hole solutions in four dimensions.
We show that the correct entropy, temperature (and absorption probability) of non-extremal black p-brane can be reproduced by a certain thermodynamical model when maximizing its entropy. We show that the form of the model is related to the geometrical similarity of non-extremal and near extremal black p-brane at near horizon region, and argue about the appropriateness of the model.
We reviewed the field redefinition approach of Seeley-DeWitt expansion for the determination of Seeley-DeWitt coefficients from arXiv:1505.01156. We apply this approach to compute the first three Seeley-DeWitt coefficients for \say{non-minimal} $\mathcal{N}=1$ Einstein-Maxwell supergravity in four dimensions. Finally, we use the third coefficient for the computation of the logarithmic corrections to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of non-extremal black holes following arXiv:1205.0971. We determine the logarithmic corrections for non-extremal Kerr-Newman, Kerr, Reissner-Nordström and Schwarzschi…
We carry out a thorough survey of entropy for a large class of $p$-branes in various dimensions. We find that the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy may be given a simple world volume interpretation only for the non-dilatonic $p$-branes, those with the dilaton constant throughout spacetime. The entropy of extremal non-dilatonic $p$-branes is non-vanishing only for the solutions preserving 1/8 of the original supersymmetries. Upon toroidal compactification these reduce to dyonic black holes in 4 and 5 dimensions. For the self-dual string in 6 dimensions, which preserves 1/4 of the original supersymmetr…
We derive a general form of first-order flow equations for extremal and non-extremal, static, spherically symmetric black holes in theories with massless scalars and vectors coupled to gravity. By rewriting the action as a sum of squares a la Bogomol'nyi, we identify the function governing the first-order gradient flow, the `generalised superpotential', which reduces to the `fake superpotential' for non-supersymmetric extremal black holes and to the central charge for supersymmetric black holes. For theories whose scalar manifold is a symmetric space after a timelike dimensional reduction, we …
We construct interpolating solutions describing single-center static extremal non-supersymmetric black holes in four-dimensional N=2 supergravity theories with cubic prepotentials. To this end, we derive and solve first-order flow equations for rotating electrically charged extremal black holes in a Taub-NUT geometry in five dimensions. We then use the connection between five- and four-dimensional extremal black holes to obtain four-dimensional flow equations and we give the corresponding solutions.
We have learnt that the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of supersymmetric black holes in five-dimensional minimal supergravity can be reproduced from microstate counting via the AdS/CFT and Kerr/CFT correspondence. In this note, we demostrate the coincidence of both formalisms for extremal and near-extremal black holes in five-dimensional minimal supergravity. Connection to AdS_2 gravity is also mentioned.
Using the quasi-normal modes frequency of extremal Reissner-Nordström black holes, we obtain area spectrum for these type of black holes. We show that the area and entropy black hole horizon are equally spaced. Our results for the spacing of the area spectrum differ from that of schwarzschild black holes.
We discuss the known microscopic interpretations of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy for configurations of intersecting M-branes. In some cases the entropy scales as that of a massless field theory on the intersection. A different situation, found for configurations which reduce to 1-charge D=5 black holes or 2-charge D=4 black holes, is explained by a gas of non-critical strings at their Hagedorn temperature. We further suggest that the entropy of configurations reducing to 1-charge D=4 black holes is due to 3-branes moving within 5-branes.
We consider N=2 supergravity in four dimensions with small R^2 curvature corrections. We construct large charge extremal supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric black hole solutions in all space, and analyze their thermodynamic properties.
Motivated by the recent interest in quantization of black hole area spectrum, we consider the area spectrum of near extremal black $3-$branes. Based on the proposal by Bekenstein and others that the black hole area spectrum is discrete and equally spaced, we implement Kunstatter's method to derive the area spectrum for the near extremal black $3-$branes. The result for the area of event horizon although discrete, is not equally spaced.
A black hole solution to low energy type IIA string theory which is extremal, non-supersymmetric, and carries 0- and 6-brane charge is presented. For large values of the charges it is metastable and a corresponding D-brane picture can be found. The mass and statistical entropy of the two descriptions agree at a correspondence point up to factors of order one, providing more evidence that the correspondence principle for black holes and strings of Horowitz and Polchinski may be extended to include black holes with more than one Ramond-Ramond charge.
We construct non-extremal as well as extremal black string solutions in minimal five-dimensional supergravity coupled to vector multiplets using dimensional reduction to three Euclidean dimensions. Our method does not assume that the scalar manifold is a symmetric space, and applies as well to a class of non-supersymmetric theories governed by a generalization of special real geometry. We find that five-dimensional black string solutions correspond to geodesics in a specific totally geodesic para-Kähler submanifold of the scalar manifold of the dimensionally reduced theory, and identify the su…
We present string-theory derivation of the semiclassical entropy of extremal dyonic black holes in the approach based on conformal sigma model (NS-NS embedding of the classical solution). We demonstrate (resolving some puzzles existed in previous related discussions) that the degeneracy responsible for the entropy is due to string oscillations in four transverse dimensions `intrinsic' to black hole: four non-compact directions of the D=5 black hole and three non-compact and one compact (responsible for embedding of magnetic charges) dimensions in the D=4 black hole case. Oscillations in other …
We apply the method of Banerjee and Kulkarni (arXiv:0707.2449, [hep-th]) to provide a derivation of Hawking radiation from the GHS (stringy) blackhole which falls in the class of the most general spherically symmetric blackholes ($\sqrt{-g}\neq 1$) and also the non-extremal $D1-D5$ blackhole using only covariant gravitational anomalies.
