We present Chandra observations of the hybrid morphology radio sources 3C 433 and 4C 65.15, two members of the rare class of objects possessing an FR I jet on one side of the core and an FR II lobe on the other. The X-ray spectrum of 3C 433 shows intrinsic absorption (with a column density of N_H=8e22 cm-2), such as is typical of FR II narrow-line radio galaxies. There is excess X-ray emission below 2 keV containing contributions from diffuse soft X-ray emission (likely hot gas with kT~1.2 keV) as well as from the nucleus. The core of 3C 433 is extended in hard X-rays, presumably due to X-ray emission from the inner-jet knot on the FR I side that is apparent in the radio map. It is possible that the X-ray emission from this inner-jet knot is absorbed by the dust known to be present in the host galaxy. The spectrum of 4C 65.15 can be modeled with a simple power law with perhaps mild intrinsic absorption (N_H=1.3e21 cm-2). X-ray emission is detected at the bend in the FR I jet. This X-ray jet emission lies above the extrapolation from the high-frequency radio synchrotron emission and has a spectral slope flatter than alpha_rx, indicating that the jet spectral energy distribution is concave as with other FR II quasar jets. Both 3C 433 and 4C 65.15 have unabsorbed X-ray luminosities, radio luminosities, and optical spectra typically seen in comparable sources with FR II morphologies. Presumably the FR I structure seen on one side in these hybrid sources is generated by a powerful jet interacting with a relatively dense environment.
We built a catalog of 122 FR~II radio galaxies, called FRII{\sl{CAT}}, selected from a published sample obtained by combining observations from the NVSS, FIRST, and SDSS surveys. The catalog includes sources with redshift $\leq 0.15$, an edge-brightened radio morphology, and those with at least one of the emission peaks located at radius $r$ larger than 30 kpc from the center of the host. The radio luminosity at 1.4 GHz of the \FRII\ sources covers the range $L_{1.4} \sim 10^{39.5} - 10^{42.5}$ $\ergs$. The \FRII\ catalog has 90\% of low and 10\% of high excitation galaxies (LEGs and HEGs), re…
Binary active galactic nuclei (AGNs) provide clues to how gas-rich mergers trigger and fuel AGNs and how supermassive black hole (SMBH) pairs evolve in a gas-rich environment. While significant effort has been invested in their identification, the detailed properties of binary AGNs and their host galaxies are still poorly constrained. In a companion paper, we examined the nature of ionizing sources in the double nuclei of four kpc-scale binary AGNs with redshifts between 0.1~0.2. Here, we present their host galaxy morphology based on F336W (U-band) and F105W (Y-band) images taken by the Wide F…
We report the results of high-resolution subpixel imaging of the hard continuum and Fe Kα line of the Compton Thick (CT) Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) ESO 428-G014, observed with Chandra ACIS. While the 3-4 keV emission is dominated by an extended component, a single nuclear point source is prominent in the 4-6 keV range. Instead, two peaks of similar intensity, separated by ~36 pc in projection on the plane of the sky are detected in the Fe Kα emission. The SE knot could be marginally associated with the heavily obscured hard continuum source. We discuss four possible interpretations of the n…
We report on the imaging analysis of 200 ks sub-arcsecond resolution Chandra ACIS-S observations of the nearby Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151. Bright, structured soft X-ray emission is observed to extend from 30 pc to 1.3 kpc in the south-west from the nucleus, much farther than seen in earlier X-ray studies. The terminus of the north-eastern X-ray emission is spatially coincident with a CO gas lane, where the outflow likely encounters dense gas in the host galactic disk. X-ray emission is also detected outside the boundaries of the ionization cone, which indicates that the gas there is not complet…
We present Chandra imaging and spectral observations of Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 4388. Three extended X-ray structures around the nucleus on kpc scale are well imaged, allowing an in-depth spatially resolved study. Both the extended hard continuum and the Fe K$α$ line show similar morphology, consistent with a scenario where the ionizing emission from nucleus is reprocessed by circumnuclear cold gas, resulting in a weak reflection continuum and an associated neutral Fe K$α$ line. This has been seen in other Compton thick active galactic nuclei (AGN), but NGC 4388 is one of the rare cases with a lo…
In the local Universe, the growth of massive galaxy clusters mainly operates through the continuous accretion of group-scale systems. The infalling group in Abell 2142 is the poster child of such an accreting group, and as such, it is an ideal target to study the astrophysical processes induced by structure formation. We present the results of a deep (200 ks) observation of this structure with Chandra, which highlights the complexity of this system in exquisite detail. In the core of the group, the spatial resolution of Chandra reveals the presence of a leading edge and a complex AGN-induced a…
Fanaroff-Riley II low-excitation radio galaxies (FRII-LERGs) are characterized by weak nuclear excitation on pc-scales and by properties typical of powerful FRIIs (defined as high-excitation, hereafter HERGs/BLRGs) on kp-scales. Since a link between the accretion properties and the power of the produced jets is expected both from theory and observations, their nature is still debated. In this work we investigate the X-ray properties of a complete sample of 19 FRII-LERGs belonging to the 3CR catalog, exploiting Chandra and XMM-Newton archival data. We also analyze 32 FRII-HERGs/BLRGs with Chand…
Due to their steep spectra, low-frequency observations of FR II radio galaxies potentially provide key insights in to the morphology, energetics and spectrum of these powerful radio sources. However, limitations imposed by the previous generation of radio interferometers at metre wavelengths has meant that this region of parameter space remains largely unexplored. In this paper, the first in a series examining FR IIs at low frequencies, we use LOFAR observations between 50 and 160 MHz, along with complementary archival radio and X-ray data, to explore the properties of two FR II sources, 3C452…
We use Chandra X-ray observations to look for evidence of a recoiling black hole from the brightest cluster galaxy in Abell 2261 (A2261-BCG). A2261-BCG is a strong candidate for a recoiling black hole because of its large, flat stellar core, revealed by Hubble Space Telescope imaging observations. We took 100-ksec observations with Chandra and combined it with 35 ksec of archival observations to look for low-level accretion onto a black hole of expected mass $M\sim10^{10}\ M_{\scriptscriptstyle \odot}$ that could possibly be located in one of four off-center stellar knots near the galaxy's cen…

The starbusting, nearby (D = 32.9 Mpc) spiral (Sc) galaxy NGC2276 belongs to the sparse group dominated by the elliptical galaxy NGC2300. NGC2276 is a remarkable galaxy, as it displays a disturbed morphology at many wavelengths. This is possibly due to gravitational interaction with the central elliptical galaxy of the group. Previous ROSAT and XMM-Newton observations resulted in the detection of extended hot gas emission and of a single very bright (~1.e41 erg/s) ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) candidate. Here we report on a study of the X-ray sources of NGC2276 based on CHANDRA data taken i…
We report the discovery of optical and X-ray synchrotron emission from the brighter radio jet in galaxy NGC 7385 using data from HST and Chandra. The jet has a projected length of 5 kpc and a similar morphology to other known optical jets in low-power radio galaxies. We also report a strong jet-cloud interaction which appears to be deflecting the counter-jet and causing a reversal in its direction.
It is widely believed that galaxy formation and evolution is regulated by stellar mechanical feedback in forms of fast stellar winds and supernova explosions. However, the coupling of this feedback with the interstellar medium remains poorly understood. We examine how the coupling may be traced by diffuse soft X-ray emission in M83 -- a nearby face-on spiral galaxy undergoing active star formation, based chiefly on 729~ks Chandra observations. Our main findings are 1) the X-ray emission is enhanced not only along the galaxy's grand spiral arms, but also clearly in their downstreams; 2) the spe…
The origin and evolution of supernova remnants of the mixed-morphology class is not well understood. Several remnants present distorted radio or X-ray shells with jet-like structures. G290.1-0.8 (MSH 11-61A) belongs to this class. We aim to investigate the nature of this supernova remnant in order to unveil the origin of its particular morphology. We based our work on the study of the X-ray emitting plasma properties and the conditions imposed by the cold interstellar medium where the remnant expanded. We use archival radio, HI line data and X-ray observations from XMM-Newton and Chandra obser…
We present the analysis of X-ray and optical observations of gas filaments observed in the radio source 3CR 318.1, associated with NGC 5920, the Brightest Cluster Galaxy (BCG) of MKW 3s, a nearby cool core galaxy cluster. This work is one of the first X-ray and optical analyses of filaments in cool core clusters carried out using MUSE observations. We aim at identifying the main excitation processes responsible for the emission arising from these filaments. We complemented the optical VLT/MUSE observations, tracing the colder gas phase, with X-ray $\textit{Chandra}$ observations of the hotter …
The HST Frontier Fields cluster MACS J1149.6+2223 is one of the most complex merging clusters, believed to consist of four dark matter halos. We present results from deep (365 ks) Chandra observations of the cluster, which reveal the most distant cold front (z=0.544) discovered to date. In the cluster outskirts, we also detect hints of a surface brightness edge that could be the bow shock preceding the cold front. The substructure analysis of the cluster identified several components with large relative radial velocities, thus indicating that at least some collisions occur almost along the lin…
We have obtained a high spatial resolution X-ray image of the nucleus of NGC 1068 using the High Resolution Camera (HRC-I) on board the Chandra X-ray Observatory, which provides an unprecedented view of the innermost 1 arcsecond radius region of this galaxy. The HRC image resolves the narrow line region into X-ray emission clumps matching bright emission-line clouds in the HST [OIII]5007 images and allows comparison with sub-arcsecond scale radio jet for the first time. Two distinct X-ray knots are revealed at 1.3-1.4 arcsecond northeast and southwest of the nucleus. Based on the combined X-ra…
We report the analysis of the deep (270 ks) X-ray Chandra data of one of the most radio-loud, Seyfert 2 galaxies in the nearby Universe (z=0.01135), IC 5063. The alignment of the radio structure with the galactic disk and ionized bi-cone, enables us to study the effects of both radio jet and nuclear irradiation on the interstellar medium (ISM). The nuclear and bi-cone spectra suggest a low photoionization phase mixed with a more ionized or thermal gas component, while the cross-cone spectrum is dominated by shocked and collisionally ionized gas emission. The clumpy morphology of the soft (<3 k…
Motivated by theoretical expectations that Nuclear Star Clusters (NSCs) in galactic centers may provide a favorable environment for super-massive black holes to form and/or efficiently grow, we set out to measure the fraction of nearby nucleated galaxies that also host an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN). We targeted a distance-limited sample of 98 objects with the Chandra X-ray Telescope, down to a uniform X-ray luminosity threshold of $\sim$10$^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The sample is composed of 47 late-types and 51 early-types, enabling us to further investigate the active fraction as a function of …

Over recent years there has been mounting evidence that accreting supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei (AGN) and stellar mass black holes have similar observational signatures: thermal emission from the accretion disk, X-ray corona, and relativisitic jets. Further, there have been investigations into whether or not AGN have spectral states similar to that of X-ray binaries (XRBs) and what parallels can be drawn between the two using a hardness-intensity diagram (HID). To address whether AGN jets might be related to accretion states as in XRBs, we explore whether populations of ra…
We present results from \textit{Chandra} X-ray observations and 325 MHz Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) observations of the massive and X-ray luminous cluster of galaxies Abell S1063. We report the detection of large-scale \lq\lq excess brightness\rq\rq\ in the residual \textit{Chandra} X-ray surface brightness map, which extends at least 2.7 Mpc towards the north-east from the center of the cluster. We also present a high fidelity X-ray flux and temperature map using \textit{Chandra} archival data of 122 ksec, which shows the disturbed morphology in the cluster. The residual flux map s…
We have carried out Chandra, HST, and VLA observations of four MOJAVE blazars that have been previously classified as 'hybrid' (FR I/II) blazars in terms of radio morphology but not total radio power. The motivation of this study is to determine the X-ray emission mechanism in jets, these being different in FR I and FR II jets. We detected X-ray jet emission with sufficient SNR in two blazars viz. PKS 0215+015 and TXS 0730+504. We carried out spectral energy distribution (SED) modeling of the broad-band emission from the jet regions in these sources and found that a single synchrotron emission…
We present Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray, VLA radio, and optical observations of three candidate Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS) radio galaxies. CSS sources are galactic scale and are presumably driving a shock through the ISM of their host galaxy. B3 1445+410 is a low excitation emission line CSS radio galaxy with possibly a hybrid Fanaroff-Riley FRI/II (or Fat Double) radio morphology. The Chandra observations reveal a point-like source which is well fit with a power law consistent with emission from a Doppler boosted core. 3C 268.3 is a CSS broad line radio galaxy whose Chandra data are consist…
The young stellar cluster illuminating the W40 H II region, one of the nearest massive star forming regions, has been observed with the ACIS detector on board the Chandra X-ray Observatory. Due to its high obscuration, this is a poorly-studied stellar cluster with only a handful of bright stars visible in the optical band, including three OB stars identified as primary excitation sources. We detect 225 X-ray sources, of which 85% are confidently identified as young stellar members of the region. Two potential distances of the cluster, 260 pc and 600 pc, are used in the paper. Supposing the X-r…
We present the first Chandra/ACIS imaging study of the circumnuclear region of the nearby Seyfert galaxy NGC 1365. The X-ray emission is resolved into point-like sources and complex, extended emission. The X-ray morphology of the extended emission shows a biconical soft X-ray emission region extending ~5 kpc in projection from the nucleus, coincident with the high excitation outflow cones seen in optical emission lines particularly to the northwest. Harder X-ray emission is detected from a kpc-diameter circumnuclear ring, coincident with the star-forming ring prominent in the Spitzer mid-infra…
We present the catalogue of Radio sources associated with Optical Galaxies and having Unresolved or Extended morphologies I (ROGUE I). It was generated by cross-matching galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 (SDSS DR 7) as well as radio sources from the First Images of Radio Sky at Twenty Centimetre (FIRST) and the National Radio Astronomical Observatory VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) catalogues. We created the largest handmade catalogue of visually classified radio objects and associated with them optical host galaxies, containing 32,616 galaxies with a FIRST core within 3 arcsec o…
We present the first X-ray dedicated study of the galaxy cluster A795 and of the Fanaroff-Riley Type 0 hosted in its brightest cluster galaxy. Using an archival 30 ks \textit{Chandra} observation we study the dynamical state and cooling properties of the intracluster medium, and we investigate whether the growth of the radio galaxy is prevented by the surrounding environment. We discover that A795 is a weakly cool core cluster, with an observed mass deposition rate $\lessapprox 14\,$ M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$ in the cooling region (central $\sim$66 kpc). In the inner $\sim$ 30 kpc we identify two p…
Magnetic fields in the intracluster medium (ICM) affect the structure and the evolution of galaxy clusters. However, their properties are largely unknown, and measuring magnetic fields in galaxy clusters is challenging, especially on large-scales outside of individual radio sources. In this work, we probe the plane-of-the-sky orientation of magnetic fields in clusters using the intensity gradients. The technique is a branch of the Gradient Technique (GT) that employs emission intensity maps from turbulent gas. We utilize the Chandra X-ray images of the Perseus, M 87, Coma, and A2597 galaxy clu…
