Fanaroff-Riley II low-excitation radio galaxies (FRII-LERGs) are characterized by weak nuclear excitation on pc-scales and by properties typical of powerful FRIIs (defined as high-excitation, hereafter HERGs/BLRGs) on kp-scales. Since a link between the accretion properties and the power of the produced jets is expected both from theory and observations, their nature is still debated. In this work we investigate the X-ray properties of a complete sample of 19 FRII-LERGs belonging to the 3CR catalog, exploiting Chandra and XMM-Newton archival data. We also analyze 32 FRII-HERGs/BLRGs with Chandra data as a control sample. We compared FRII-LERG and FRII-HERG/BLRG X-ray properties and optical data available in literature to obtain a wide outlook of their behavior. The low accretion rate estimates for FRII-LERGs, from both X-ray and optical bands, allow us to firmly reject the hypothesis for that they are the highly obscured counterpart of powerful FRII-HERGs/BLRGs. Therefore, at least two hypothesis can be invoked to explain the FRII-LERGs nature: (i) they are evolving from classical FRIIs because of the depletion of accreting cold gas in the nuclear region, while the extended radio emission is the heritage of a past efficiently accreting activity; (ii) they are an intrinsically distinct class of objects with respect to classical FRIs/FRIIs. Surprisingly, in this direction a correlation between accretion rates and environmental richness is found in our sample. The richer the environment, the more inefficient is the accretion. In this framework, the FRII-LERGs are intermediate between FRIs and FRII-HERGs/BLRGs both in terms of accretion rate and environment.
It is generally thought that FRII Radio Galaxies host thin optically thick disks, while FRIs are powered by Advected Dominated Accretion Flows. The sources with an efficient engine are optically classified as High Excitation Radio Galaxies (HERGs) and those with an inefficient motor as Low Excitation Radio Galaxies (LERGs). Recently, the study of Radio Galaxies down to mJy fluxes has cast serious doubts on the LERG-FRI and HERG-FRII correspondence, revealing that many LERGs show FRII radio morphologies. The FR catalogs recently compiled by Capetti et al. (2017a,b) and Baldi et al. (2018) have …
We compiled a sample of 24 flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs), 21 BL Lacs, 13 FRI and 12 FRII radio galaxies to study the jet power and broad-line luminosity relation, and the jet power and black hole mass relation. Furthermore, we obtain the histograms of key parameters. Our main results are as the follows:(i) We found that the FSRQs are roughly separated from BL Lacs by the Ledlow-Owen FRI/FRII dividing line in the $\rm{\log{P_{jet}}-\log{M}}$ plane. This result supports the unification model that BL Lacs unify with FRI radio galaxies and FSRQs unify with FRII radio galaxies.(ii)We found th…
So-called FR0 radio galaxies have recently emerged as a family of active galaxies with all the same properties as FRI radio galaxies except for their ratio of core to total emission which is about 30 times as high compared to FRI sources. We show how their properties fit within the gap paradigm as low prograde spinning black holes whose progenitors are powerful FRII quasars that transitioned rapidly from cold mode into advection dominated accretion in a few million years. The prediction is that if sufficient fuel exists, FR0 radio galaxies will evolve into full-fledged FRI radio galaxies and t…
We built a catalog of 122 FR~II radio galaxies, called FRII{\sl{CAT}}, selected from a published sample obtained by combining observations from the NVSS, FIRST, and SDSS surveys. The catalog includes sources with redshift $\leq 0.15$, an edge-brightened radio morphology, and those with at least one of the emission peaks located at radius $r$ larger than 30 kpc from the center of the host. The radio luminosity at 1.4 GHz of the \FRII\ sources covers the range $L_{1.4} \sim 10^{39.5} - 10^{42.5}$ $\ergs$. The \FRII\ catalog has 90\% of low and 10\% of high excitation galaxies (LEGs and HEGs), re…
The Broad Line Radio Galaxy 3C 111, characterized by a Fanaroff-Riley II (FRII) radio morphology, is one of the sources of the Misaligned Active Galactic Nuclei sample, consisting of Radio Galaxies and Steep Spectrum Radio Quasars, recently detected by the Fermi-Large Area Telescope. Our analysis of the 24-month gamma-ray light curve shows that 3C 111 was only occasionally detected at high energies. It was bright at the end of 2008 and faint, below the Fermi-Large Area Telescope sensitivity threshold, for the rest of the time. A multifrequency campaign of 3C~111, ongoing in the same period, re…
The Fermi-LAT satellite has recently discovered a small group of radio galaxies and steep spectrum radio sources: the misaligned AGNs (MAGNs) sample. We present the X-ray analysis of all the sources of this sample (7 FRIs and 3 FRIIs) with a firm GeV association. This study supports the idea that FRIIs host more efficient accretion mechanisms (m_dot >0.1) than FRIs (m_dot <0.003). Furthermore, in objects with high accretion rates the Broad Line Regions appear to be very active zones where, in addition to optical lines, the fluorescence iron Kalpha feature at 6.4 keV is also produced. It seems …
Studies of black hole spin and other parameters as a function of redshift provide information about the physical state and merger and accretion histories of the systems. One way that black hole spin may be estimated is through observations of extended radio sources. These sources, powered by outflows from an AGN, allow the beam power and total outflow energy to be studied. In a broad class of models, the beam power of the outflow is related to the spin of the black hole. This relationship is used to estimate black hole spins for 55 radio sources. The samples studied include 7 FRII quasars and …
We characterize the optical variability properties of eight lobe-dominated radio quasars (QSOs): B2 0709$+$37, FBQS J095206.3$+$235245, PG 1004$+$130, [HB89] 1156$+$631, [HB89] 1425$+$267, [HB89] 1503$+$691, [HB89] 1721$+$343, 4C $+$74.26, systematically monitored for a duration of 13 years since 2009. The quasars are radio-loud objects with extended radio lobes that indicate their orientation close to the sky plane. Five of the eight QSOs are classified as giant radio quasars. All quasars showed variability during our monitoring, with magnitude variations between 0.3 and 1 mag for the least v…
Current wide-area radio surveys are dominated by active galactic nuclei, yet many of these sources have no identified optical counterparts. Here we investigate whether one can constrain the nature and properties of these sources, using Fanaroff-Riley type II (FRII) radio galaxies as probes. These sources are easy to identify since the angular separation of their lobes remains almost constant at some tens of arcseconds for z>1. Using a simple algorithm applied to the FIRST survey, we obtain the largest FRII sample to date, containing over ten thousand double-lobed sources. A subset of 459 sourc…
Results from Chandra-HST-VLA observations of 13 hybrid sources are presented. Data from ten sources in the literature are analysed along with new data from three hybrid blazars belonging to the MOJAVE sample. Studies of such hybrid sources displaying both FRI and FRII jet characteristics could provide the key to resolving the long-standing Fanaroff-Riley dichotomy issue. A majority of the 13 hybrid sources show FRII-like total radio powers, i.e., they are "hybrid" in radio morphology but not in total radio power. VLBI observations of ten of the 13 sources show that the X-ray jet is on the same…
The idea that mergers are more likely in dense groups or clusters coupled with the assumption that such events lead to cold gas flows onto black holes, suggests a direct relationship between the radiative efficiency of an active galactic nucleus and environmental richness. Observations, however, increasingly challenge this and other basic expectations. Mounting evidence, for example, shows an inverse trend between near-Eddington accreting objects and environmental richness. Broken down by radio galaxy subgroup, recent work has explored connections between low excitation radio galaxies with Fan…

A model for the relation between radio jet power and the product of central black hole (BH) mass and Eddington ratio of AGN is proposed, and the model is examined with data from the literature. We find that radio jet power positively correlates but not linearly with the product of BH mass ($m$ in solar mass) and Eddington ratio ($λ$), and the power law indices ($μ$) are significantly less than unity for relatively low accretion ($λ<0.1$) AGN, $P_{j}\propto (λm)^μ$, in the radio galaxies and the Seyfert galaxies. This leads to a negative correlation between radio loudness and $λm$ for the low l…
Correlations between jet power and active time for z < 0.1 high excitation and low excitation radio galaxies are explored as well as evidence in favor of a specific, non-random distribution for these objects including mid-infrared emitting radio galaxies as a function of environment and redshift. In addition, so-called weak line radio galaxies with FRII jet morphology have been identified as a class of active galaxies in the process of shutting down. This paper identifies common features between these seemingly disparate phenomena described above for the population of radio galaxies, and strin…
We present general relativistic radiation magnetohydrodynamics (GRRMHD) simulations of super-Eddington accretion flows around supermassive black holes (SMBHs) which may apply to tidal disruption events (TDEs). We perform long duration ($t\geq81,200\, GM/c^3$) simulations which achieve mass accretion rates $\gtrsim 11$ times the Eddington rate and produce thermal synchrotron spectra and images of their jets. The jet reaches a maximum velocity of $v/c \approx 0.5-0.9$, but the density weighted outflow velocity is $\sim0.2-0.35c$. Gas flowing beyond the funnel wall expands conically and drives a …
We explore thick accretion disks around rotating attractors. We detail the configurations analysing the fluid angular momentum and finally providing a characterization of the disk morphology and different possible topologies. Investigating the properties of orbiting disks, a classification of attractors, possibly identifiable in terms of their spin-mass ratio, is introduced; then an attempt to characterize dynamically a series of different disk topologies is discussed, showing that some of the toroidal configuration features are determined by the ratio of the angular momentum of the orbiting m…
We present observations of a complete sub-sample of 20 radio galaxies from the Third Cambridge Catalog (3C) with redshift <0.3 obtained from VLT/MUSE optical integral field spectrograph. These data have been obtained as part of the survey MURALES (a MUse RAdio Loud Emission line Snapshot survey) with the main goal of exploring the Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) feedback process in a sizeable sample of the most powerful radio sources at low redshift. We present the data analysis and, for each source, the resulting emission line images and the 2D gas velocity field. Thanks to their unprecedented d…

Much of the parameter space relevant to the evolution of astrophysical circumbinary accretion discs remains unexplored. We have carried out a suite of circumbinary disc simulations surveying both disc thickness and kinematic viscosity, using both constant-$ν$ and constant-$α$ prescriptions. We focus primarily on disc aspect ratios between $0.1$ and $0.033$, and on viscosities between $ν=0.0005$ and $ν=0.008$ (in units of binary semi-major axis and orbital frequency), and specialise to circular equal-mass binaries. Both factors strongly influence the evolution of the binary semi-major axis: at …
This is the first paper in a series of studies of the Coma cluster using the SRG/eROSITA X-ray data obtained in course of the Calibration and Performance Verification observations. The data cover $\sim3^\circ\times 3^\circ$ area around the cluster with a typical exposure time of more than 20 ks. The stability of the instrumental background and operation of the SRG Observatory in the scanning mode provided us with an excellent data set for studies of the diffuse emission up to a distance of $\sim 1.5R_{200}$ from the Coma center. In this study, we discuss the rich morphology revealed by the X-r…
[abridged] Here we present the analysis of multifrequency data gathered for the FRII radio galaxy PKS B1358-113, hosted in the brightest cluster galaxy of Abell 1836. The galaxy harbors one of the most massive black holes known to date and our analysis of the optical data reveals that this black hole is only weakly active. Based on new Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray observations and archival radio data we derive the preferred range for the jet kinetic luminosity $\sim (0.5-3) \times 10^{45}$ erg s$^{-1}$. This is above the values implied by various scaling relations proposed for radio sources in…
It is commonly assumed that the properties and geometry of the accretion flow in transient low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) significantly change when the X-ray luminosity decays below $\sim 10^{-2}$ of the Eddington limit ($L_{\rm Edd}$). However, there are few observational cases where the evolution of the accretion flow is tracked in a single X-ray binary over a wide dynamic range. In this work, we use NuSTAR and NICER observations obtained during the 2018 accretion outburst of the neutron star LMXB 4U 1608-52, to study changes in the reflection spectrum. We find that the broad Fe-K$α$ line a…
In the past few years, the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) has provided the first-ever event horizon-scale images of the supermassive black holes (BHs) (M87*) and Sagittarius A$^*$ (Sgr A*). The next-generation EHT project is an extension of the EHT array that promises larger angular resolution and higher sensitivity to the dim, extended flux around the central ring-like structure, possibly connecting the accretion flow and the jet. The ngEHT Analysis Challenges aim to understand the science extractability from synthetic images and movies to inform the ngEHT array design and analysis algorithm d…
In this paper, we analyze the so-called Master Equation of the linear backreaction of a plasma disk in the central object magnetic field, when small scale ripples are considered. This study allows to single out two relevant physical properties of the linear disk backreaction: (i) the appearance of a vertical growth of the magnetic flux perturbations; (ii) the emergence of sequence of magnetic field O-points, crucial for the triggering of local plasma instabilities. We first analyze a general Fourier approach to the solution of the addressed linear partial differential problem. This technique a…
We discuss basic features of steady accretion disk morphology around magnetized compact astrophysical objects. A comparison between the standard model of accretion based on visco-resistive MHD and the plasma instabilities, like ballooning modes, triggered by very low value of resistivity, is proposed.
We find that the remnant of supernova (SN) 1987A share some morphological features with four supernova remnants (SNRs) that have signatures of shaping by jets, and from that we strengthen the claim that jets played a crucial role in the explosion of SN 1987A. Some of the morphological features appear also in planetary nebulae where jets are observed. The clumpy ejecta bring us to support the claim that the jittering jets explosion mechanism can account for the structure of the remnant of SN 1987A, i.e., SNR 1987A. We conduct a preliminary attempt to quantify the fluctuations in the angular mom…
We report first X-ray Chandra observations of a sample of seven low luminosity compact (LLC) sources. They belong to a class of young compact steep spectrum (CSS) radio sources. Four of them have been detected, the other three have upper limit estimations for X-ray flux, one CSS galaxy is associated with an X-ray cluster. We have used the new observations together with the observational data for known strong CSS and gigahertz-peaked spectrum (GPS) objects and large scale FRIs and FRIIs to study the relation between morphology, X-ray properties and excitation modes in radio-loud AGNs. We found …

The cataclysmic variable MV Lyr was present in the Kepler field yielding a light curve with the duration of almost 1500 days with 60 second cadence. Such high quality data of this nova-like system with obvious fast optical variability show multicomponent power density spectra. Our goal is to study the light curve from different point of view, and perform a shot profile analysis. We search for characteristics not discovered with standard power density spectrum based methods. The shot profile method identifies individual shots in the light curve, and averages them in order to get all substructur…
In this proceeding we explore a pathway to radio-loudness under the hypothesis that retrograde accretion onto giant spinning black holes leads to the launch of powerful jets, as seen in radio loud QSOs and recently in LAT/Fermi and BAT/Swift Blazars. Counter-rotation of the accretion disc relative to the BH spin is here associated to gas-poor galaxy mergers progenitors of giant (missing-light) ellipticals. The occurrence of retrograde accretion enters as unifying element that may account for the radio-loudness/galaxy morphology dichotomy observed in AGN.
We present the first optical observation at sub-milliarcsecond (mas) scale of the microquasar SS 433 obtained with the GRAVITY instrument on the VLT interferometer. The 3.5 hour exposure reveals a rich K-band spectrum dominated by hydrogen Br$γ $ and \ion{He}{i} lines, as well as (red-shifted) emission lines coming from the jets. The K-band continuum emitting region is dominated by a marginally resolved point source ($<$ 1 mas) embedded inside a diffuse background accounting for 10\% of the total flux. The jet line positions agree well with the ones expected from the jet kinematic model, an in…
