The classical concept of affine locally symmetric spaces allows a generalization for various geometric structures on a smooth manifold. We remind the notion of symmetry for parabolic geometries and we summarize the known facts for $|1|$--graded parabolic geometries and for almost Grassmannian structures, in particular. As an application of two general constructions with parabolic geometries, we present an example of non--flat Grassmannian symmetric space. Next we observe there is a distinguished torsion--free affine connection preserving the Grassmannian structure so that, with respect to this connection, the Grassmannian symmetric space is an affine symmetric space in the classical sense.
In this paper, we introduce new notions of semi-parallel shape operators and structure Jacobi operators in complex two-plane Grassmannians $G_2({\mathbb C}^{m+2})$. By using such a semi-parallel condition, we give a complete classification of Hopf hypersurfaces in $G_2({\mathbb C}^{m+2})$.
In this paper, we introduce a new commuting condition between the structure Jacobi operator and symmetric (1,1)-type tensor field $T$, that is, $R_ξϕT=TR_ξϕ$, where $T=A$ or $T=S$ for Hopf hypersurfaces in complex hyperbolic two-plane Grassmannians. By using simultaneous diagonalzation for commuting symmetric operators, we give a complete classification of real hypersurfaces in complex hyperbolic two-plane Grassmannians with commuting condition respectively.
We use the Cartan representations of $SO(3)$ and $SU(3)$, and an irreducible 14-dimensional representation of $Sp(3)$ to construct certain totally geodesic submanifolds in "skew" position in the complex quadrics, the complex 2-Grassmannians and the quaternionic 2-Grassmannians.
A submanifold of a Riemannian symmetric space is called parallel if its second fundamental form is a parallel section of the appropriate tensor bundle. We classify parallel submanifolds of the Grassmannian $\rmG^+_2(\R^{n+2})$ which parameterizes the oriented 2-planes of the Euclidean space $\R^{n+2}$\,. Our main result states that every complete parallel submanifold of $\rmG^+_2(\R^{n+2})$\,, which is not a curve, is contained in some totally geodesic submanifold as a symmetric submanifold. This result holds also if the ambient space is the non-compact dual of $\rmG^+_2(\R^{n+2})$\,.
A Riemannian manifold is said to be almost positively curved if the sets of points for which all $2$-planes have positive sectional curvature is open and dense. We show that the Grassmannian of oriented $2$-planes in $\mathbb{R}^7$ admits a metric of almost positive curvature, giving the first example of an almost positively curved metric on an irreducible compact symmetric space of rank greater than $1$. The construction and verification rely on the Lie group $\mathbf{G}_2$ and the octonions, so do not obviously generalize to any other Grassmannians.
We classify, up to orbit equivalence, the cohomogeneity one actions on the noncompact duals of the symmetric spaces G_2, SU_3 and the real oriented two-plane Grassmannians.
Using a stability criterion due to Kröncke, we show, providing ${n\neq 2k}$, the Kähler--Einstein metric on the Grassmannian $Gr_{k}(\mathbb{C}^{n})$ of complex $k$-planes in an $n$-dimensional complex vector space is dynamically unstable as a fixed point of the Ricci flow. This generalises the recent results of Kröncke and Knopf--Sesum on the instability of the Fubini--Study metric on $\mathbb{CP}^{n}$ for $n>1$. The key to the proof is using the description of Grassmannians as certain coadjoint orbits of $SU(n)$. We are also able to prove that Kröncke's method will not work on any of the oth…
Let $A$ be a positive injective operator in a Hilbert space (\h, <,>), and denote by [,] the inner product defined by A: [f,g]=<Af,g>. A closed subspace $\s \subset \h$ is called A-compatible if there exists a closed complement for $\s$, which is orthogonal to $\s$ with respect to the inner product [,]. Equivalently, if there exists a necessarily unique idempotent operator $Q_\s$ such that $R(Q_\s)=\s$, which is symmetric for this inner product. The compatible Grassmannian $Gr_A$ is the set of all A-compatible subspaces of $\h$. By parametrizing it via the one to one correspondence $\s\leftrig…
We study curvature-adapted submanifolds of general symmetric spaces. We generalize Cartan's theorem for isoparametric hypersurfaces of spheres and Wang's classification of isoparametric Hopf hypersurfaces in complex projective spaces to any compact symmetric space. Our second objective is to investigate such hypersurfaces in some specific symmetric spaces. Various classification results in the Cayley projective and hyperbolic planes and in complex two-plane Grassmannians are obtained under some additional assumptions.
We study the problem of determining the least symmetric triangle, which arises both from pure geometry and from the study of molecular chirality in chemistry. Using the correspondence between planar $n$-gons and points in the Grassmannian of 2-planes in real $n$-space introduced by Hausmann and Knutson, this corresponds to finding the point in the fundamental domain of the hyperoctahedral group action on the Grassmannian which is furthest from the boundary, which we compute exactly. We also determine the least symmetric obtuse and acute triangles. These calculations provide prototypes for comp…
In this article we study the stability problem for the Einstein-Hilbert functional on compact symmetric spaces following and completing the seminal work of Koiso on the subject. We classify in detail the irreducible representations of simple Lie algebras with Casimir eigenvalue less than the Casimir eigenvalue of the adjoint representation, and use this information to prove the stability of the Einstein metrics on both the quaternionic and Cayley projective plane. Moreover we prove that the Einstein metrics on quaternionic Grassmannians different from projective spaces are unstable.
In his book Mickelsson notices that the infinite-dimensional Grassmannian manifold of Segal and Wilson admits a Spin^c structure and after this he naturally considers the problem of defining a Dirac operator on it. Mickelsson gives a possible candidate for such an operator but unfortunately it proves out to be badly diverging and he leaves it as an open problem to introduce proper modifications to his original construction in order to obtain a well-defined (unbounded) operator with expected properties. Using fermionic Fock space representations of the restricted unitary group associated to a p…
We develop a novel analogue of Euclidean PCA (principal component analysis) for data taking values on a Riemannian symmetric space, using totally geodesic submanifolds as approximating lower dimnsional submanifolds. We illustrate the technique on n-spheres, Grassmannians, n-tori and polyspheres.
There is a hierarchy of commuting soliton equations associated to each symmetric space U/K. When U/K has rank n, the first n flows in the hierarchy give rise to a natural first order non-linear system of partial diffferential equations in n variables, the so called U/K-system. Let G_{m,n} denote the Grassmannian of n-dimensional linear subspaces in R^{m+n}, and G_{m,n}^1 the Grassmannian of space like m-dimensional linear subspaces in the Lorentzian space R^{m+n,1}. In this paper, we use techniques from soliton theory to study submanifolds in space forms whose Gauss-Codazzi equations are gauge…
We prove that compact quaternionic-Kähler manifolds of positive scalar curvature admit no almost complex structure, even in the weak sense, except for the complex Grassmannians $Gr_2(C^{n+2})$. We also prove that irreducible inner symmetric spaces $M^{4n}$ of compact type are not weakly complex, except for spheres and Hermitian symmetric spaces.
Inspired by the work of G. Lu on pseudo symplectic capacities we obtain several results on the Gromov width and the Hofer--Zehnder capacity of Hermitian symmetric spaces of compact type. Our results and proofs extend those obtained by Lu for complex Grassmannians to Hermitian symmetric spaces of compact type. We also compute the Gromov width and the Hofer--Zehnder capacity for Cartan domains and their products.
In this article, we study holomorphic isometric embeddings between bounded symmetric domains. In particular, we show the total geodesy of any holomorphic isometric embedding between reducible bounded symmetric domains with the same rank.
The Grassmannian model represents harmonic maps from Riemann surfaces by families of shift-invariant subspaces of a Hilbert space. We impose a natural symmetry condition on the shift-invariant subspaces that corresponds to considering an important class of harmonic maps into symmetric and $k$-symmetric spaces. In particular, we obtain new general forms for such symmetric shift-invariant subspaces and for the corresponding extended solutions.
