We present a theory of electron-mediated interaction between adatoms in graphene. In the case of resonant scattering, relevant for hydrogentated graphene, a long-range 1/r interaction is found. This interaction can be viewed as a fermionic analog of the Casimir interaction, in which massless fermions play the role of photons. The interaction is an attraction or a repulsion depending on whether the adatoms reside on the same sublattice or on different sublattices, with attraction dominating for adatoms randomly spread over both sublattices. The attractive nature of these forces creates an instability under which adatoms tend to aggregate.
We have performed first-principles studies on adsorption patterns of hydrogen adatoms on uniaxially strained graphene. Our simulation reveals that the adsorption energy of adatoms are sensitive to the strain. Hydrogen adatoms on zigzag strained graphene tend to form a chain-like adsorption patterns perpendicular to the strain direction, but those under armchair strain cannot form any long-range chain pattern. We explain our results in terms of a tight-binding model and the electronic structure of strained graphene. These anisotropic adsorption behaviors under uniaxial strain suggest methods fo…
We show that a dilute ensemble of epoxy-bonded adatoms on graphene has a tendency to form a spatially correlated state accompanied by a gap in graphene's electron spectrum. This effect emerges from the electron-mediated interaction between adatoms with a peculiar $1/r^3$ distance dependence. The partial ordering transition is described by a random bond three state Potts model.
Many of the exotic properties proposed to occur in graphene rely on the possibility of increasing the spin orbit coupling (SOC). By combining analytical and numerical tight binding calculations, in this work we study the SOC induced by heavy adatoms with active electrons living in $p$ orbitals. Depending on the position of the adatoms on graphene different kinds of SOC appear. Adatoms located in hollow position induce spin conserving intrinsic like SOC whereas a random distribution of adatoms induces a spin flipping Rashba like SOC. The induced SOC is linearly proportional to the adatoms conce…
We study the spectral function and quasiparticle scattering in Li-decorated graphene (Li@graphene) with an atomistic $T$-matrix formalism and uncover adatom-induced spectral effects which shed light on experimentally observed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) features. From transport studies, alkali adatoms are known to introduce charged-impurity scattering limiting the carrier mobility. Here, we demonstrate that Li adatoms furthermore give rise to a low-energy impurity band centered at the $Γ$ point which originates from the hybridization between the atomic 2s state of the Li …
Electrons in graphene with heavy adatoms (such as In or Tl) have been predicted to form a 2D topological insulator phase with a substantial spectral gap potentially suitable for future practical applications. In order to facilitate the ongoing experimental efforts to identify this phase we perform a theoretical study of its spectral properties in a model graphene system with randomly distributed adatoms. Our extensive modeling shows that random heavy adatoms produce a full spectral gap (as opposed to a mobility gap) accompanied by distinctive quasiparticle interference patterns observable by m…
The so-called spin-orbit proximity effect experimentally realized in graphene (G) on several different heavy metal surfaces opens a new perspective to engineer the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) for new generation spintronics devices. Here, via large-scale density functional theory (DFT) calculations performed for two distinct graphene/metal models, G/Pt(111) and G/Au/Ni(111), we show that the spin-orbit splitting of the Dirac cones (DCs) in these stuctures might be enhanced by either adsorption of adatoms on top of graphene (decoration) or between the graphene and the metal (intercalation). While …
We describe scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) measurements performed on individual cobalt (Co) atoms deposited onto backgated graphene devices. We find that Co adatoms on graphene can be ionized by either the application of a global backgate voltage or by the application of a local electric field from a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip. Large screening clouds are observed to form around Co adatoms ionized in this way, and we observe that some intrinsic graphene defects display a similar behavior. Our results provide new insight into charged impurity scattering in graphene, as well a…
Periodically corrugated epitaxial graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) on metallic substrates are considered as perspective templates for the self-assembly of nanoparticles arrays. By using first-principles calculations, we determine binding energies and diffusion activation barriers of metal adatoms on graphene and h-BN. The observed chemical trends can be understood in terms of the interplay between charge transfer and covalent bonding involving the adatom d electrons. We further investigate the electronic effects of the metallic substrate and find that periodically corrugated templat…
Ordered configurations of hydrogen adatoms on graphene have long been proposed, calculated and searched for. Here we report direct observation of several ordered configurations of H adatoms on graphene by scanning tunneling microscopy. On the top side of the graphene plane, H atoms in the configurations appear to stick to carbon atoms in the same sublattice. A gap larger than 0.6 eV in the local density of states of the configurations was revealed by scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements. These findings can be well explained by density functional theory calculations based on double side…
We investigate the adsorption sites of $3d$ transition metal (TM) adatoms by means of low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. Co and Ni adatoms were adsorbed on two types of graphene on SiC(0001), i.e. pristine epitaxial monolayer graphene (MLG) and quasi-free-standing monolayer graphene (QFMLG). In the case of QFMLG, two stable adsorption sites are identified, while in the case of MLG, only one adsorption site is observed. Our experimental results reveal the decoupling efficiency as a crucial parameter for determining the adsorption site as well as the electronic prope…
Hydrogen adatoms on graphene are investigated using DFT and analytical approaches. We demonstrate that the level of lattice deformation due to the hydrogen adsorption does not substantially change the coupling between the graphene $p_{z}$ orbitals. The hybridization primarily takes place between the adsorbate's s orbital and the graphene $p_{z}$ orbitals. We also show that the impurity interaction with the graphene atoms is limited to only a few nearest neighbors, allowing us to construct a compact TB model for the impurity-graphene system with an arbitrary impurity distribution. The complexit…
The naturally weak spin-orbit coupling in Graphene can be largely enhanced by adatom deposition (e.g. Weeks et al. Phys. Rev. X 1, 021001 (2011)). However, the dynamics of the adatoms also induces a coupling between phonons and the electron spin. Using group theory and a tight-binding model, we systematically investigate the coupling between the low-energy in-plane phonons and the electron spin in single-layer graphene uniformly decorated with heavy adatoms. Our results provide the foundation for future investigations of spin transport and superconductivity in this system. In order to quantify…
Hydrogen adatoms and other species covalently bound to graphene act as resonant scattering centers affecting the electronic transport properties and inducing Anderson localization. We show that attractive interactions between adatoms on graphene and their diffusion mobility strongly modify the spatial distribution, thus fully eliminating isolated adatoms and increasing the population of larger size adatom aggregates. Our scaling analysis shows that such aggregation of adatoms increases conductance by up to several orders of magnitude and results in significant extension of the Anderson localiz…
We investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of single Fe, Co, and Ni atoms and clusters on monolayer graphene (MLG) on SiC(0001) by means of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), x-ray absorption spectroscopy, x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), and ab initio calculations. STM reveals different adsorption sites for Ni and Co adatoms. XMCD proves Fe and Co adatoms to be paramagnetic and to exhibit an out-of-plane easy axis in agreement with theory. In contrast, we experimentally find a nonmagnetic ground state for Ni monomers while an increasing cluster size leads to sizeable mag…
Resonant graphene dopants, such as hydrogen adatoms, experience long-range effective interaction mediated by conduction electrons. As a result of this interaction, when several adatoms are present in the sample, hopping of adatoms between sites belonging to different sublattices involves significant energy changes. Different inelastic mechanisms facilitating such hopping -- coupling to phonons and conduction electrons -- are considered. It is estimated that the diffusion of hydrogen adatoms is rather slow, amounting to roughly one hop to a nearest neighbor per millisecond.
Two-dimensional topological insulators (2D TIs) have been proposed as platforms for many intriguing applications, ranging from spintronics to topological quantum information processing. Realizing this potential will likely be facilitated by the discovery of new, easily manufactured materials in this class. With this goal in mind we introduce a new framework for engineering a 2D TI by hybridizing graphene with impurity bands arising from heavy adatoms possessing partially filled d-shells, in particular osmium and iridium. First principles calculations predict that the gaps generated by this mea…
The 2007 discovery of quantized conductance in HgTe quantum wells delivered the field of topological insulators (TIs) its first experimental confirmation. While many three-dimensional TIs have since been identified, HgTe remains the only known two-dimensional system in this class. Difficulty fabricating HgTe quantum wells has, moreover, hampered their widespread use. With the goal of breaking this logjam we provide a blueprint for stabilizing a robust TI state in a more readily available two-dimensional material---graphene. Using symmetry arguments, density functional theory, and tight-binding…
We study ballistic transport properties of graphene with a low concentration of vacancies or adatoms. The conductance of graphene doped to the Dirac point is found to depend on the relative distribution of impurities among different sites of the honeycomb lattice labeled in general by six colors. The conductivity is shown to be sensitive to the crystal orientation if adatom sites have a preferred color. Our theory is confirmed by numerical simulations using recursive Green's functions with no adjustable parameters.
The electronic transport of monolayer graphene devices is studied before and after \emph{in situ} deposition of a sub-monolayer coating of osmium adatoms. Unexpectedly, and unlike all other metallic adatoms studied to date, osmium adatoms shift the charge neutrality point to more positive gate voltages. This indicates that osmium adatoms act as electron acceptors and thus leave the graphene hole-doped. Analysis of transport data suggest that Os adatoms behave as charged impurity scatterers, albeit with a surprisingly low charge-doping efficiency. The charge neutrality point of graphene is foun…
Intervalley scattering of carriers in graphene at `top' adatoms may give rise to a hidden Kekulé ordering pattern in the adatom positions. This ordering is the result of a rapid modulation in the electron-mediated interaction between adatoms at the wavevector $K- K'$, which has been shown experimentally and theoretically to dominate their spatial distribution. Here we show that the adatom interaction is extremely sensitive to strain in the supporting graphene, which leads to a characteristic spatial modulation of the Kekulé order as a function of adatom distance. Our results suggest that the s…
We present a theoretical study of indirect exchange interaction between magnetic adatoms in graphene. The coupling between the adatoms to a graphene sheet is described in the framework of tunneling Hamiltonian. We account for the possibility of this coupling being of resonant character if a bound state of the adatom effectively interacts with the continuum of 2D delocalized states in graphene. In this case the indirect exchange between the adatoms mediated by the 2D carriers appears to be substantially enhanced compared to the results known from Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) theory. Mor…
We study the possibility of realizing topological phases in graphene with randomly distributed adsorbates. When graphene is subjected to periodically distributed adatoms, the enhanced spin-orbit couplings can result in various topological phases. However, at certain adatom coverages, the intervalley scattering renders the system a trivial insulator. By employing a finite-size scaling approach and Landauer-Büttiker formula, we show that the randomization of adatom distribution greatly weakens the intervalley scattering, but plays a negligible role in spin-orbit couplings. Consequently, such a r…
We theoretically investigate spin-resolved currents flowing in large-area graphene, with and without defects, doped with single atoms of noble metals (Cu, Ag and Au) and 3d-transition metals (Mn,Fe,Co and Ni). We show that the presence of a local magnetic moment is a necessary but not sufficient condition to have a non zero current polarization. An essential requirement is the presence of spin-split localized levels near the Fermi energy that strongly hybridize with the graphene pi-bands. We also show that a gate potential can be used to tune the energy of these localized levels, leading to an…
Many recent calculations have been performed to study a Co atom adsorbed on graphene, with significantly varying results on the nature of the bonding. We use auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (AFQMC) and a size-correction embedding scheme to accurately calculate the binding energy of Co on graphene. We find that as a function of the distance h between the Co atom and the six-fold hollow site, there are three distinct ground states corresponding to three electronic configurations of the Co atom. Two of these states provide binding and exhibit a double-well feature with nearly equal binding en…
We study the transport property for armchair-edge graphene nanoribbons (AGNRs) with an adatom coupling to a semi-infinite quantum wire. Using the nonequilibrium Green's function approach with tight-binding approximation, we demonstrate that the tunneling current through the system is sensitively dependent on both the AGNR width and adatom location. Interestingly, when the adatom locates onto a carbon atom in the 3$j$th chain from the edge of a metallic AGNR, the system shows a transmission gap accompanied by a threshold voltage in $I-V$ curve like a semiconducting AGNR. This effect may be usef…
In the limit of low adatom concentration, we obtain exact analytic expressions for the local and total density of states (LDOS, TDOS) for a tight-binding model of adatoms on graphene. The model is not limited to nearest-neighbor hopping but can include hopping between carbon atoms at any separation. We also find an analytical expression for the spectral function $A({\bf k}, E)$ of an electron of Bloch vector ${\bf k}$ and energy E on the graphene lattice, to first order in the adatom concentration. We treat the electron-electron interaction by including a Hubbard term on the adatom, which we s…
The scattering of two-dimensional massless Dirac fermions from local spin-orbit interactions with an origin in dilute concentrations of physisorbed atomic species on graphene is theoretically investigated. The hybridization between graphene and the adatoms' orbitals lifts spin and valley degeneracies of the pristine host material, giving rise to rich spin-orbit coupling mechanisms with features determined by the exact adsorption position on the honeycomb lattice - bridge, hollow or top position - and the adatoms' outer-shell orbital type. Effective graphene-only Hamiltonians are derived from s…
Recent experimental evidence that fluorinated graphene creates local magnetic moments around F adatoms has not been supported by semilocal density-functional theory (DFT) calculations where the adsorption of an isolated F adatom induces no magnetic moment in graphene. Here, we show that such an incorrect prediction of the nonmagnetic ground state is due to the self-interaction error inherent in semilocal exchange-correlation functionals. The present hybrid DFT calculation for an isolated F adatom on graphene predicts not only a spin-polarized ground state with a spin moment of 1 bohr magneton,…
Although surface diffusion is critical for many physical and chemical processes, including the epitaxial growth of crystals and heterogeneous catalysis, it is particularly challenging to directly study. Here, we estimate the carbon adatom migration barrier on freestanding monolayer graphene by quantifying its temperature-dependent electron knock-on damage. Due to the fast healing of vacancies by diffusing adatoms, the damage rate decreases with increasing temperature. By analyzing the observed damage rates at 300-1073 K using a model describing our finite scanning probe, we find a barrier of (…
We show that, in graphene with a small concentration of adatoms, the total magnetic moment $μ_T$ can be switched on and off by varying the Fermi energy $E_F$, either by applying a gate voltage or by suitable chemical doping. Our calculation is carried out using a simple tight-binding model described previously, combined with a mean-field treatment of the electron-electron interaction on the adatom. The values of $E_F$ at which the moment is turned on or off are controlled by the strength of the hopping between the graphene sheet and the adatom, the on-site energy of the adatom, and the strengt…
We study the charge and spin transport in a two terminal graphene nanoribbon (GNR) decorated with random Gold (Au) adatoms using a Kane-Mele model. Two commonly used GNRs, that is, the armchair graphene nanoribbon (AGNR) and the zigzag graphene nanoribbon (ZGNR) are compared and contrasted, which shows that in presence of Au adatoms, a somewhat robust $2e^2/h$ conductance plateau occurs in the case of AGNR around the zero of the Fermi energy, while in ZGNR this plateau is fragile. We show that this flat plateau, having a conductance value $2e^2/h$, is not a hallmark signature of a topologicall…
We study magnetism of an adatom adsorbed on AA-stacked bilayer graphene (BLG) in both unbiased and biased cases, using the Anderson impurity model. We find different magnetic phase diagrams for the adatom, depending on the energy level of the adatom, which varies from the magnetic phase diagram of adatom in normal metals to that in graphene. This is due to the individual energy dependence of the density of states (DOS) of AA-stacked BLG and anomalous broadening of the adatom energy level. Furthermore we investigate the effect of a bias voltage on DOS of AA-stacked and show that the magnetizati…
The interaction of two resonant impurities in graphene has been predicted to have a long-range character with weaker repulsion when the two adatoms reside on the same sublattice and stronger attraction when they are on different sublattices. We reveal that this attraction results from a single energy level. This opens up a possibility of controlling the sign of the impurity interaction via the adjustment of the chemical potential. For many randomly distributed impurities (adatoms or vacancies) this may offer a way to achieve a controlled transition from aggregation to dispersion.
We present a theoretical study of the optical conductivity of graphene with magnetic and nonmagnetic adatoms. First, by introducing alternating potential in a pure graphene, we demonstrate a gap formation in the density of states and the corresponding optical conductivity. We highlight the distinction between such a gap formation and the so-called Pauli blocking effect. Next, we apply this idea to graphene with adatoms by introducing magnetic interactions between the carrier spins and the spins of the adatoms. Exploring various possible ground-state spin configurations of the adatoms, we find …
We investigate the graphene-impurity interaction problem by combining experimental - scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) - and theoretical - Anderson impurity model and density functional theory (DFT) calculations - techniques. We use graphene on the SiC(000-1)(2x2)_C reconstruction as a model system. The SiC substrate reconstruction is based on silicon adatoms. Graphene mainly interacts with the dangling bonds of these adatoms which act as impurities. Graphene grown on SiC(000-1)(2x2)_C shows domains with various orientations relative to the substrate so that very diffe…
We have investigated the way in which the concentration and distribution of adatoms affect the geometric and electronic properties of graphene. Our calculations were based on the use of first principle under the density functional theory which reveal various types of $π$-bonding. The energy band structure of this doped graphene material may be explored experimentally by employing angle-resolved photo-emission spectroscopy (ARPES) for electronic band structure measurements and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) for the density-of-states (DOS) both of which have been calculated and reported i…
The electron-transport properties of adatom-graphene system are investigated for different (random, correlated, and ordered) spatial configurations of adatoms over different types of high symmetry sites with various adsorption heights. K adatoms in monolayer graphene are modeled by the scattering potential adapted from the independent self-consistent ab initio calculations. The results are obtained numerically using the quantum-mechanical Kubo-Greenwood formalism. A band gap may be opened only if ordered adatoms act as substitutional atoms, while there is no band gap opening for adatoms acting…
In this paper, we describe the formation of local resonances in graphene in the presence of magnetic adatoms containing localized orbitals of arbitrary symmetry, corresponding to any given angular momentum state. We show that quantum interference effects which are naturally inbuilt in the honeycomb lattice in combination with the specific orbital symmetry of the localized state lead to the formation of fingerprints in differential conductance curves. In the presence of Jahn-Teller distortion effects, which lift the orbital degeneracy of the adatoms, the orbital symmetries can lead to distincti…
Enhancement of the spin-orbit coupling in graphene may lead to various topological phenomena and also find applications in spintronics. Adatom absorption has been proposed as an effective way to achieve the goal. In particular, great hope has been held for indium in strengthening the spin-orbit coupling and realizing the quantum spin Hall effect. To search for evidence of the spin-orbit coupling in graphene absorbed with indium adatoms, we carry out extensive transport measurements, i.e., weak localization magnetoresistance, quantum Hall effect and non-local spin Hall effect. No signature of t…
Based on ab-initio calculations we discuss Kondo effect due to Co adatom on graphene zigzag nanoribbon. Co atom located at hollow site behaves as spin S = 1/2 impurity with dxz and dyz orbitals contributing to magnetic moment. Dynamical correlations are analyzed with the use of complementary approximations: mean field slave boson approach, noncrossing approximation and equation of motion method. The impact of interplay between spin and orbital degrees of freedom together with the effect of peculiarities of electronic and magnetic structure of nanoribbon on many-body resonances is examined.
The metal atoms, the alkali ones excepted, might provide the multiple outermost orbitals for the multi-orbital hybridizations with the out-of-plane $π$ bondings on the honeycomb lattice. This will dominate the fundamental properties of Al-, Ti- and Bi-adsorbed graphene nanoribbons, in which they are explored thoroughly by using the first-principles calculations. The principle focuses are the adatom-dependent binding energies, the adatom-carbon lengths, the optimal position, the maximum adatom concentrations, the free electron density transferred per adatom, the adatom-related valence and condu…
We address the nature of the disordered state that results from the adsorption of adatoms in graphene. For adatoms that sit at the center of the honeycomb plaquette, as in the case of most transition metals, we show that the ones that form a zero-energy resonant state lead to Anderson localization in the vicinity of the Dirac point. Among those, we show that there is a symmetry class of adatoms where Anderson localization is suppressed, leading to an exotic metallic state with large and rare charge droplets, that localizes only at the Dirac point. We identify the experimental conditions for th…
We investigate the effect of an applied uniaxial strain on the ferromagnetic instability due to long- range Coulomb interaction between Dirac fermions in graphene. In case of undeformed graphene the ferromagnetic exchange instability occurs at sufficiently strong interaction within the Hartree- Fock approximation. In this work we show that using the same theoretical framework but with an additional applied uniaxial strain, the transition can occur for much weaker interaction, within the range in suspended graphene. We also study the consequence of strain on the formation of localized magnetic …
It has been shown that the first C layer on the SiC(0001)(2{\times}2)C surface already exhibits graphene-like electronic structure, with linear pi bands near the Dirac point. Indeed, the (2{\times}2)C reconstruction, with a Si adatom and C restatom structure, efficiently passivates the SiC(0001) surface thanks to an adatom/restatom charge transfer mechanism. Here, we study the effects of interface modifications on the graphene layer using density functional theory calculations. The modifications we consider are inspired from native interface defects observed by scanning tunneling microscopy. O…
Recent experiments reporting unexpectedly large spin Hall effect (SHE) in graphene decorated with adatoms have raised a fierce controversy. We apply numerically exact Kubo and Landauer- Buttiker formulas to realistic models of gold-decorated disordered graphene (including adatom clustering) to obtain the spin Hall conductivity and spin Hall angle, as well as the nonlocal resistance as a quantity accessible to experiments. Large spin Hall angles of 0.1 are obtained at zero-temperature, but their dependence on adatom clustering differs from the predictions of semiclassical transport theories. F…
We have systematically introduced charged impurity scatterers in the form of Mg adsorbates to exfoliated single layer graphene and observe little variation of the spin relaxation times despite pronounced changes in the charge transport behavior. All measurements are performed on non-local graphene tunneling spin valves exposed in-situ to Mg adatoms, thus systematically introducing atomic-scale charged impurity scattering. While charge transport properties exhibit decreased mobility and decreased momentum scattering times, the observed spin lifetimes are not significantly affected indicating th…
We have performed density functional theory calculations of graphene decorated with carbon adatoms, which bind at the bridge site of a C--C bond. Earlier studies have shown that the C adatoms have magnetic moments and have suggested the possibility of ferromagnetism with high Curie temperature. Here we propose to use a gate voltage to fine tune the magnetic moments from zero to 1$μ_B$ while changing the magnetic coupling from antiferromagnetism to ferromagnetism and again to antiferromagnetism. These results are rationalized within the Stoner and RKKY models. When the SCAN meta-GGA correction …
Early experiments on alkali-doped graphene demonstrated that the dopant adatoms modify the conductivity of graphene significantly, as extra carriers enhance conductivity while Coulomb scattering off the adatoms suppresses it. However, conductivity probes the overall scattering rate, so a dominant channel associated with long-range Coulomb scattering will mask weaker short-range channels. We present weak localization measurements of epitaxial graphene with lithium adatoms that separately quantify intra- and intervalley scattering rates, then compare the measurements to tight-binding calculation…
We calculate the diffusion barrier of fluorine adatoms on doped graphene in the diluted limit using Density Functional Theory. We found that the barrier $Δ$ strongly depends on the magnitude and character of the graphene's doping ($δn$): it increases for hole doping ($δn<0$) and decreases for electron doping ($δn>0$). Near the neutrality point the functional dependence can be approximately by $Δ=Δ_0-α\, δn$ where $α\simeq6\times10^{-12}$ meVcm$^2$. This effect leads to significant changes of the diffusion constant with doping even at room temperature and could also affect the low temperature d…
We present a first-principles study of the migration and recombination of edge defects (carbon adatom and/or vacancy) and their influence on electrical conductance in zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs). It is found that at room temperature, the adatom is quite mobile while the vacancy is almost immobile along the edge of ZGNRs. The recombination of an adatom-vacancy pair leads to a pentagon-heptagon ring defect structure having a lower energy than the perfect edge, implying that such an edge-defect can be formed spontaneously. This edge defect can suppresses the conductance of ZGNRs drastical…
We use first-principles Quantum Monte-Carlo simulations to study the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between hydrogen adatoms attached to a graphene sheet. We find that the pairwise RKKY interactions at distances of a few lattice spacings are strongly affected by inter-electron interactions, in particular, the potential barrier between widely separated adatoms and the dimer configuration becomes wider and thus harder to penetrate. We also point out that anti-ferrromagnetic and charge density wave orderings have very different effects on the RKKY interaction. Finally, we analyz…
The electronic transport properties of monolayer graphene have been studied before and after the deposition of a dilute coating of tungsten adatoms on the surface. For coverages up to 2.5\% of a monolayer, we find tungsten adatoms simultaneously donate electrons to graphene and reduce the carrier mobility, impacting the zero- and finite-field transport properties. Two independent transport analyses suggest the adatoms lie nearly 1 nm above the surface. The presence of adatoms is also seen to impact the low field magnetoresistance, altering the signatures of weak localization.
We discuss theoretically the local density of states (LDOS) of a graphene sheet hosting two distant adatoms located at the center of the hexagonal cells. By putting laterally a Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) tip over a carbon atom, two remarkable novel effects can be detected: i) a multilevel structure in the LDOS and ii) beating patterns in the induced LDOS. We show that both phenomena occur nearby the Dirac points and are highly anisotropic. Furthermore, we propose conductance experiments employing STM as a probe for the observation of such exotic manifestations in the LDOS of graphene …
Recent studies have focused on laser-induced gaps in graphene which have been shown to have a topological origin, thereby hosting robust states at the sample edges. While the focus has remained mainly on these topological chiral edge states, the Floquet bound states around defects lack a detailed study. In this paper we present such a study covering large defects of different shape and also vacancy-like defects and adatoms at the dynamical gap at $\hbarΩ/2$ ($\hbarΩ$ being the photon energy). Our results, based on analytical calculations as well as numerics for full tight-binding models, show …
We analyze the electronic properties of adatom doped graphene in the low impurity concentration regime. We focus on the Anderson localized regime and calculate the localization length ($ξ$) as a function of the electron doping and an external magnetic field. The impurity states hybridize with carbon's $p_z$ states and form a partially filled band close to the Dirac point. Near the impurity band center, the chiral symmetry of the system's effective Hamiltonian is partially preserved which leads to a large enhancement of $ξ$. The sensitivity of transport properties, namely Mott's variable range …
Adatom-decorated graphene offers a promising new path towards spintronics in the ultrathin limit. We combine experiment and theory to investigate the electronic properties of dilutely fluorinated bilayer graphene, where the fluorine adatoms covalently bond to the top graphene layer. We show that fluorine adatoms give rise to resonant impurity states near the charge neutrality point of the bilayer, leading to strong scattering of charge carriers and hopping conduction inside a field-induced band gap. Remarkably, the application of an electric field across the layers is shown to tune the resonan…
Recently, the existence of local magnetic moment in a hydrogen adatom on graphene has been confirmed experimentally [González-Herrero et al., Science, 2016, 352, 437]. Inspired by this breakthrough, we theoretically investigate the top-site adatom on trilayer graphene (TLG) by solving the Anderson impurity model via self-consistent mean field method. The influence of the stacking order, the adsorption site and external electric field are carefully considered. We find that, due to its unique electronic structure, the situation of the TLG is drastically different from that of the monolayer graph…
