We review the problem of adatoms in graphene under two complementary points of view, scattering theory and strong correlations. We show that in both cases impurity atoms on the graphene surface present effects that are absent in the physics of impurities in ordinary metals. We discuss how to observe these unusual effects with standard experimental probes such as scanning tunneling microscopes, and spin susceptibility.

We have performed first-principles studies on adsorption patterns of hydrogen adatoms on uniaxially strained graphene. Our simulation reveals that the adsorption energy of adatoms are sensitive to the strain. We show that a dilute ensemble of epoxy-bonded adatoms on graphene has a tendency to form a spatially correlated state accompanied by a gap in graphene's electron spectrum. This effect emerges from the electron-mediated interaction between adatoms with a peculiar $1/r^3$ distance dependence. We study ballistic transport properties of graphene with a low concentration of vacancies or adatoms. The conductance of graphene doped to the Dirac point is found to depend on the relative distribution of impurities among different sites of the honeycomb lattice labeled in general by six colors. The conductivity is shown to be sensitive to the crystal orientation if adatom sites have a preferred color. Our theory is confirmed by numerical simulations using recursive Green's functions with no adjustable parameters.

The formation energies for mono- and bivacancies in graphene in the presence of adatoms of various metals and small metallic clusters have been calculated. It is shown that transition metal impurities, such as iron, nickel and, especially, cobalt reduce dramatically the vacancy formation energies whereas gold impurities have almost no effect on characteristics of the vacancies. Using magnetization measurements, we show that point defects in graphene - fluorine adatoms and irradiation defects (vacancies) - carry magnetic moments with spin 1/2. Both types of defects lead to notable paramagnetism but no magnetic ordering could be detected down to liquid helium temperatures. We examine the conditions necessary for the presence of localized magnetic moments on adatoms with inner shell electrons in graphene. We show that the low density of states at the Dirac point, and the anomalous broadening of the adatom electronic level,lead to the formation of magnetic moments for arbitrarily small local charging energy. As a result, we obtain an anomalous scaling of the boundary separating magnetic and non-magnetic states. We show that, unlike any other material, the formation of magnetic moments can be controlled by an electric field effect.
We show by means of molecular dynamics simulations that graphene is an excellent coating for diamond. The transformation of diamond to amorphous carbon while sliding under pressure can be prevented by having at least two graphene layers between the diamond slabs, making this combination of materials suitable for new coatings and micro- and nanoelectromechanical devices. Grain boundaries, vacancies and adatoms on the diamond surface do not change this picture whereas reactive adsorbates between the graphene layers may have detrimental effects. The electronic configurations of Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu adatoms on graphene and graphite have been studied by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism and charge transfer multiplet theory. A delicate interplay between long-range interactions and local chemical bonding is found to influence the adatom equilibrium distance and magnetic moment. We show within a local self-consistent mean-field treatment that a random distribution of magnetic adatoms can open a robust gap in the electronic spectrum of graphene. Efficient adsorption and segregation of Xe & Kr gases is of high importance in commercial as well as nuclear industries. Systematic ab initio calculations reveal that transition metal (TM) decorated boron doped graphene (BDG-TM) sheet can act as an efficient substrate for adsorptive capture of Xe & Kr (adatoms). Using first-principles calculations, the effect of magnetic point defects (vacancy and adatom) is investigated in zigzag graphene nanoribbons. The structural, electronic, and spin-transport properties are studied. While pristine ribbons display anti-parallel spin states at their edges, the defects are found to perturb this coupling.
