We have investigated the way in which the concentration and distribution of adatoms affect the geometric and electronic properties of graphene. Our calculations were based on the use of first principle under the density functional theory which reveal various types of $π$-bonding. The energy band structure of this doped graphene material may be explored experimentally by employing angle-resolved photo-emission spectroscopy (ARPES) for electronic band structure measurements and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) for the density-of-states (DOS) both of which have been calculated and reported in this paper. Our calculations show that such adatom doping is responsible for the destruction or appearance of the Dirac cone structure.
A systematic study is made on geometric, electronic and magnetic properties of one-dimensional graphene nanoribbons using the first-principles calculations. The feature-rich essential properties result from the various orbital hybridizations in chemical bonds and the edge-carbon- and adatom-induced spin states. Pristine nanoribbons, with honeycomb lattices, can exhibit the planar, curving, scrolling, folding, and stacking configurations. Adatom adsorptions on surface and edge, respectively, create the buckled structures and the non-hexagonal/non-planar edges. There exist six kinds of of spin-d…
The scattering of two-dimensional massless Dirac fermions from local spin-orbit interactions with an origin in dilute concentrations of physisorbed atomic species on graphene is theoretically investigated. The hybridization between graphene and the adatoms' orbitals lifts spin and valley degeneracies of the pristine host material, giving rise to rich spin-orbit coupling mechanisms with features determined by the exact adsorption position on the honeycomb lattice - bridge, hollow or top position - and the adatoms' outer-shell orbital type. Effective graphene-only Hamiltonians are derived from s…
The electronic transport properties of single layer graphene having a dilute coating of indium adatoms has been investigated. Our studies establish that isolated indium atoms donate electrons to graphene and become a source of charged impurity scattering, affecting the conductivity as well as magnetotransport properties of the pristine graphene. Notably, a positive magnetoresistance is observed over a wide density range after In doping. The low field magnetoresistance carries signatures of quantum interference effects which are significantly altered by the adatoms.
We investigate the adsorption sites of $3d$ transition metal (TM) adatoms by means of low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. Co and Ni adatoms were adsorbed on two types of graphene on SiC(0001), i.e. pristine epitaxial monolayer graphene (MLG) and quasi-free-standing monolayer graphene (QFMLG). In the case of QFMLG, two stable adsorption sites are identified, while in the case of MLG, only one adsorption site is observed. Our experimental results reveal the decoupling efficiency as a crucial parameter for determining the adsorption site as well as the electronic prope…
This paper reveals how electronic, magnetic structure and topological phase of 2D, single-layer structures of bismuth are modified by point defects. We first showed that free standing, single-layer, hexagonal structure of bismuth, named as h-bismuthene exhibits non-trivial band topology. We then investigated interactions between single foreign adatoms and bismuthene structures, which comprise stability, bonding, electronic and magnetic structures. Localized states in diverse location of the band gap and resonant states in band continua of bismuthene are induced upon the adsorption of different…
We report on theoretical investigations of the spin-orbit coupling effects in fluorinated graphene. First-principles density functional calculations are performed for the dense and dilute adatom coverage limits. The dense limit is represented by the single-side semifluorinated graphene, which is a metal with spin-orbit splittings of about 10 meV. To simulate the effects of a single adatom, we also calculate the electronic structure of a $10 \times 10$ supercell, with one fluorine atom in the top position. Since this dilute limit is useful to study spin transport and spin relaxation, we also in…
Two-dimensional polyaniline with a C3N stoichiometry, is a newly fabricated material that has expected to possess fascinating electronic, thermal, mechanical and chemical properties . The possibility of further tuning the C3N properties upon the adsorption of foreign adatoms is thus among the most attractive researches. We carried out extensive ab-initio density functional theory (DFT) simulations to investigate the adsorption of various elements including nonmetallic, metalloidic and metallic elements on the C3N monolayer. While pristine C3N acts as a semiconductor with an indirect electronic…
The feature-rich electronic and magnetic properties of fluorine-doped graphene nanoribbons are investigated by the first-principles calculations. They arise from the cooperative or competitive relations among the significant chemical bonds, finite-size quantum confinement and edge structure. There exist C-C, C-F, and F-F bonds with the multi-orbital hybridizations. Fluorine adatoms can create the p-type metals or the concentration- and distribution-dependent semiconductors, depending on whether the $π$ bonding is seriously suppressed by the top-site chemical bonding. Furthermore, five kinds of…
The interaction of silicene with Si, C, H, O, Ti atoms along with H$_2$, H$_2$O and O$_2$ molecules are investigated and the induced functionalities thereof are analyzed using first principles density functional theory. Si adatom initially adsorbed at the top site of silicene pushes down the Si atom underneath to form a dumbbell like structure with 3+1 coordination. This prediction is important for silicene research and reveal new physical phenomena related with the formation of multilayer Si, which is apparently the precursor state for missing layered structure of silicon. We found that dumbb…
The significant halogenation effects on the essential properties of graphene are investigated by the first-principles method. The geometric structures, electronic properties, and magnetic configurations are greatly diversified under the various halogen adsorptions. Fluorination, with the strong multi-orbital chemical bondings, can create the buckled graphene structure, while the other halogenations do not change the planar σ bonding in the presence of single-orbital hybridization. Electronic structures consist of the carbon-, adatom- and (carbon, adatom)-dominated energy bands. All halogenated…
This work presents a systematic review of the feature-rich essential properties in graphene-related systems using the first-principles method. The geometric and electronic properties are greatly diversified by the number of layers, the stacking configurations, the sliding-created configuration transformation, the rippled structures, and the distinct adatom adsorptions. The top-site adsorptions can induce the significantly buckled structures, especially for hydrogen and fluorine adatoms. The electronic structures consist of the carbon-, adatom- and (carbon, adatom)-dominated energy bands. There…
Graphene's electronic structure can be fundamentally altered when a substrate- or adatom-induced Kekulé superlattice couples the valley and isospin degrees of freedom. Here, we show that the band structure of Kekulé-textured graphene can be re-engineered through layer stacking. We predict a family of Kekulé graphene bilayers that exhibit band structures with up to six valleys, and room-temperature Dirac quasiparticles whose masses can be tuned electrostatically. Fermi velocities half as large as in pristine graphene put this system in the strongly coupled regime, where correlated ground states…
The electronic properties of aluminum-doped graphenes enriched by multi-orbital hybridizations are investigated using first-principles calculations. The feature-rich electronic structures exhibit the quasi-rigid red shifts of the carbon-created energy bands, the Al-dominated valence and conduction bands, and many free electrons in the conduction Dirac cone. These are directly reflected in the special structures of density of states (DOS). The Al- and alkali-induced high free carrier densities are almost the same. There exist certain important differences among the Al-, alkali- and halogen-dope…
Using density functional theory (DFT), Hartree-Fock, exact diagonalization, and numerical renormalization group methods we study the electronic structure of diluted hydrogen atoms chemisorbed on graphene. A comparison between DFT and Hartree-Fock calculations allows us to identify the main characteristics of the magnetic structure of the defect. We use this information to formulate an Anderson-Hubbard model that captures the main physical ingredients of the system, while still allowing a rigorous treatment of the electronic correlations. We find that the large hydrogen-carbon hybridization put…
We present first-principles calculations of the electronic band structure and spin-orbit effects in graphene functionalized with methyl molecules in dense and dilute limits. The dense limit is represented by a 2$\times$2 graphene supercell functionalized with one methyl admolecule. The calculated spin-orbit splittings are up to $0.6$ meV. The dilute limit is deduced by investigating a large, 7$\times$7, supercell with one methyl admolecule. The electronic band structure of this supercell is fitted to a symmetry-derived effective Hamiltonian, allowing us to extract specific hopping parameters i…
The effect due to doping by B, Si, N on the magneto-transport properties of graphene is investigated using the generalized tight-binding model in conjunction with the Kubo formula. The crucial electronic and transport properties are greatly diversified by the type of dopant and doping concentration. The contribution from the guest atoms may open a band gap, thereby giving rise to the rich Landau level energy spectra and consequently the unique quantum Hall conductivity. The Fermi energy-dependent quantum Hall effect appears as a step structure having both integer and half-integer plateaus. Dop…
