A brief summary of the singularity resolution in loop quantum cosmology of homogeneous isotropic models is presented. The article is addressed to relativists who do not specialize in quantum gravity. For further details, and answers to more technical asked questions, the reader is directed to the original papers and to more comprehensive recent reviews.
Dedicated to the memory of Basilis Xanthopoulos, a founder of this NEB series of conferences.
For contracting/expanding bouncing cosmologies, the formulation of junction conditions at a bouncing was recently revisited by the author in collaboration with B. Le Floch and G. Veneziano. The regime of interest here is the so-called quiescent regime, in which a monotone behavior of the metric is observed and asymptotic expansions can be derived. Here, we overview our new methodology based on the notion of {\sl singularity scattering maps} and {\sl cyclic spacetimes}, and we present our main conclusions. In particular, we provide a classification of all allowed bouncing junction conditions, i…
This is a short review of a series of papers which, in collaboration with Yue Ma, establish several novel existence results for systems of coupled wave-Klein-Gordon equation. Our method, the Hyperbolic Hyperboloidal Method, has allowed us to address the global evolution problem for the Einstein equations of general relativity and investigate the global geometry of matter spacetimes that are initially close to Minkowski spacetime.

The purpose of this review is to provide a brief overview of some recent conceptual developments about possible criteria to guarantee the uniqueness of the quantization in a variety of situations that are found in cosmological systems. These criteria impose some conditions on the representation of a group of physically relevant linear transformations. Generally, this group contains any existing symmetry of the spatial sections. These symmetries may or may not be sufficient for the purpose of uniqueness and may have to be complemented with other remaining symmetries that affect the time directi…
We review results about the development and asymptotic nature of singularities in `brane-bulk' systems. These arise for warped metrics obeying the 5-dimensional Einstein equations with fluid-like sources, and including a brane 4-metric that is either Minkowski or de Sitter or Anti-de Sitter. We characterize all singular Minkowski brane solutions, and look for regular solutions with nonzero curvature. We briefly comment on matching solutions, energy conditions and finite Planck mass criteria for admissibility, and we briefly discuss the connection of these results to ambient theory.
Of the three main types of binaries detectable through ground-based gravitational wave observations, black hole-neutron star (BHNS) mergers remain the most elusive. While candidates BHNS exist in the triggers released during the third observing run of the Advanced LIGO/Virgo collaboration, no detection has been confirmed so far. As for binary neutron star systems, BHNS binaries allow us to explore a wide range of physical processes, including the neutron star equation of state, nucleosynthesis, stellar evolution, high-energy astrophysics, and the expansion of the Universe. Here, we review some…
A brief introduction to theories of the gravitational field with a Lagrangian that is a function of the scalar curvature is given. The emphasis will be placed in formal developments, while comparison to observation will be discussed in the chapter by S. Jorás in this volume.
