Positive $T$-martingales were developed as a general framework that extends the positive measure-valued martingales and are meant to model intermittent turbulence. We extend their scope by allowing the martingale to take complex values. We focus on martingales constructed on the interval $T=[0,1]$ and replace random measures by random functions. We specify a large class of such martingales for which we provide a general sufficient condition for almost sure uniform convergence to a nontrivial limit. Such a limit yields new examples of naturally generated multifractal processes that may be of use in multifractal signals modeling.
Consider the random walk $S_n=ξ_1+...+ξ_n$ with independent and identically distributed increments and negative mean $\mathbf Eξ=-m<0$. Let $M=\sup_{0\le i} S_i$ be the supremum of the random walk. In this note we present derivation of asymptotics for $\mathbf P(M>x), x\to\infty$ for long-tailed distributions. This derivation is based on the martingale arguments and does not require any prior knowledge of the theory of long-tailed distributions. In addition the same approach allows to obtain asymptotics for $\mathbf P(M_τ>x)$, where $M_τ=\max_{0\le i<τ}S_i$ and $τ=\min\{n\ge 1: S_n\le 0 \}$.
We work under the A\"ıdékon-Chen conditions which ensure that the derivative martingale in a supercritical branching random walk on the line converges almost surely to a nondegenerate nonnegative random variable that we denote by $Z$. It is shown that $\mathbb{E} Z\mathbf{1}_{\{Z\le x\}}=\log x+o(\log x)$ as $x\to\infty$. Also, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions under which $\mathbb{E} Z\mathbf{1}_{\{Z\le x\}}=\log x+{\rm const}+o(1)$ as $x\to\infty$. This more precise asymptotics is a key tool for proving distributional limit theorems which quantify the rate of convergence of the …
Let $L$ be a Lévy-type generator whose Lévy measure is controlled from below by that of a non-degenerate $α$-stable ($0<α<2$) process. In this paper, we study the martingale problem for the operator $\mathcal{L}_{t}=L+K_{t}$, with $K_{t}$ being a time-dependent non-local operator defined by \[ K_{t}f(x):=\int_{\mathbb{R}^{d}\backslash\{0\}}[f(x+y)-f(x)-\mathbf{1}_{α>1}\mathbf{1}_{\{|y|\le1\}}y\cdot\nabla f(x)]M(t,x,dy), \] where $M(t,x,\cdot)$ is a Lévy measure on $\mathbb{R}^{d}\backslash\{0\}$ for each $(t,x)\in \mathbb{R}_+ \times \mathbb{R}^{d}$. We show that if \[ \sup_{t\geq0,x\in\mathbb…
We study some sufficient conditions imposed on the sequence of martingale differences (m.d.) in the separable Banach spaces of continuous functions defined on the metric compact set for the Central Limit Theorem in this space. We taking into account the classical entropy terms, and use the theory of the so-called Grand Lebesgue Spaces of random variables having power and exponential decreasing tail of distribution.
We consider the distributional equation $\textbf{Z}\stackrel{d}{=}\sum_{k=1}^N\textbf{A}_k\textbf{Z}(k) $, where $N$ is a random variable taking value in $\mathbb N_0=\{0,1,\cdots\}$, $\textbf{A}_1,\textbf{A}_2,\cdots$ are $p\times p$ non-negative random matrix, and $\textbf{Z},\textbf{Z}(1),\textbf{Z}(2),\cdots$ are $i.i.d$ random vectors in in $\mathbb{R}_+^p$ with $\mathbb{R}_+=[0,\infty)$, which are independent of $(N,\textbf{A}_1,\textbf{A}_2,\cdots)$. Let $\{\mathbf Y_n\}$ be the multi-dimensional Mandelbrot's martingale defined as sums of products of random matrixes indexed by nodes of …
Let $X$ be a progressively measurable, almost surely right-continuous stochastic process such that $X_τ\in L^1$ and $E[X_τ] = E[X_0]$ for each finite stopping time $τ$. In 2006, Cherny showed that $X$ is then a uniformly integrable martingale provided that $X$ is additionally nonnegative. Cherny then posed the question whether this implication also holds even if $X$ is not necessarily nonnegative. We provide an example that illustrates that this implication is wrong, in general. If, however, an additional integrability assumption is made on the limit inferior of $|X|$ then the implication hold…
A proof of the continuous martingale convergence theorem is provided. It relies on a classical martingale inequality and the almost sure convergence of a uniformly bounded non-negative super-martingale, after a truncation argument.
In the first part of this paper, we give a useful criterion for uniform integrability of exponential martingales in the context of Markov processes. The condition of this criterion is easy to verify and is, in general, much weaker than the commonly used Novikov's condition. In the second part of this paper, we present a new approach to the study of spectral bounds of Feynman-Kac semigroups for a large class of symmetric Markov processes. We first establish criteria for the $L^p$-independence of spectral bounds for Feynman-Kac semigroups generated by continuous additive functionals, using gauge…
Biggins [Uniform convergence of martingales in the branching random walk. {\em Ann. Probab.}, 20(1):137--151, 1992] proved local uniform convergence of additive martingales in $d$-dimensional supercritical branching random walks at complex parameters $λ$ from an open set $Λ\subseteq \mathbb{C}^d$. We investigate the martingales corresponding to parameters from the boundary $\partial Λ$ of $Λ$. The boundary can be decomposed into several parts. There may be a part of the boundary, on which the martingales do not exist, on other parts it exists, but diverges or vanishes in the limit. In the rema…
Baez-Duarte (1971) and Gilat (1972) gave examples of martingales that converge in probability (and hence in distribution) but not almost surely. Here such a martingale is constructed with uniformly bounded increments, and a construction is provided of two martingales with the same marginals, one of which converges almost surely, while the other does not converge in probability.
We consider controlled random walks that are martingales with uniformly bounded increments and nontrivial jump probabilities and show that such walks can be constructed so that P(S_n^u=0) decays at polynomial rate n^{-α} where α>0 can be arbitrarily small. We also show, by means of a general delocalization lemma for martingales, which is of independent interest, that slower than polynomial decay is not possible.
We consider a branching Brownian motion in $\mathbb{R}^d$. We prove that there exists a random subset $Θ$ of $\mathbb{S}^{d-1}$ such that the limit of the derivative martingale exists simultaneously for all directions $θ\in Θ$ almost surely. This allows us to define a random measure on $\mathbb{S}^{d-1}$ whose density is given by the derivative martingale. The proof is based on first moment arguments: we approximate the martingale of interest by a series of processes, which do not take into account the particles that travelled too far away. We show that these new processes are uniformly integr…
Let $(W_n(θ))_{n\in\mathbb N_0}$ be the Biggins martingale associated with a supercritical branching random walk and denote by $W_\infty(θ)$ its limit. Assuming essentially that the martingale $(W_n(2θ))_{n\in\mathbb N_0}$ is uniformly integrable and that $\text{Var} W_1(θ)$ is finite, we prove a functional central limit theorem for the tail process $(W_\infty(θ) - W_{n+r}(θ))_{r\in\mathbb N_0}$ and a law of the iterated logarithm for $W_\infty(θ)-W_n(θ)$, as $n\to\infty$.
We consider a branching random walk on $\mathbb{R}$ with a stationary and ergodic environment $ξ=(ξ_n)$ indexed by time $n\in\mathbb{N}$. Let $Z_n$ be the counting measure of particles of generation $n$ and $\tilde Z_n(t)=\int e^{tx}Z_n(dx)$ be its Laplace transform. We show the $L^p$ convergence rate and the uniform convergence of the martingale $\tilde Z_n(t)/\mathbb E[\tilde Z_n(t)|ξ]$, and establish a moderate deviation principle for the measures $Z_n$.
In this paper, we give rates of convergence, for minimal distances and for the uniform distance, between the law of partial sums of martingale differences and thelimiting Gaussian distribution. More precisely, denoting by $P_{X}$ the law of a random variable $X$ and by $G_{a}$ the normal distribution ${\mathcal N} (0,a)$, we are interested by giving quantitative estimates for the convergence of $P_{S_n/\sqrt{V_n}}$ to $G_1$, where $S_n$ is the partial sum associated with either martingale differences sequences or more general dependent sequences, and $V_n= {\rm Var}(S_n)$. Applications to line…
Branching processes $(Z_n)_{n \ge 0}$ in a varying environment generalize the Galton-Watson process, in that they allow time-dependence of the offspring distribution. Our main results concern general criteria for a.s. extinction, square-integrability of the martingale $(Z_n/\mathbf E[Z_n])_{n \ge 0}$, properties of the martingale limit $W$ and a Yaglom type result stating convergence to an exponential limit distribution of the suitably normalized population size $Z_n$, conditioned on the event $Z_n >0$. The theorems generalize/unify diverse results from the literature and lead to a classificat…
In this paper, we develop a new approach to establish gradient estimates for positive solutions to the heat equation of elliptic or subelliptic operators on Euclidean spaces or on Riemannian manifolds. More precisely, we give some estimates of the gradient of logarithm of a positive solution via the uniform bound of the logarithm of the solution. Moreover, we give a generalized version of Li-Yau's estimate. Our proof is based on the link between PDE and quadratic BSDE. Our method might be useful to study some (nonlinear) PDEs.
As an alternative to the well-known methods of "chaining" and "bracketing" that have been developed in the study of random fields, a new method, which is based on a stochastic maximal inequality derived by using the Taylor expansion, is presented. The inequality dealing with finite-dimensional discrete-time martingales is pulled up to infinite-dimensional ones by using the monotone convergence arguments. The main results are some weak convergence theorems for sequences of separable random fields of discrete-time martingales under the uniform topology with the help also of entropy methods. As s…
As an alternative to the well-known methods of "chaining" and "bracketing" that have been developed in the study of random fields, a new method, which is based on a {\em stochastic maximal inequality} derived by using the formula for integration by parts and on a new concept named {\em strict countability}, is presented. The main results are some weakconvergence theorems for sequences of separable random fields of discrete-time martingales under the uniform topology with the help also of entropy methods. As special cases, some new results for i.i.d.\ random sequences, including a new Donsker t…
We give tight concentration bounds for mixtures of martingales that are simultaneously uniform over (a) mixture distributions, in a PAC-Bayes sense; and (b) all finite times. These bounds are proved in terms of the martingale variance, extending classical Bernstein inequalities, and sharpening and simplifying prior work.
We show that the measure on markings of $\mathbf {Z}_n^d$, $d\geq3$, with elements of ${0,1}$ given by i.i.d. fair coin flips on the range $\mathcal {R}$ of a random walk $X$ run until time $T$ and 0 otherwise becomes indistinguishable from the uniform measure on such markings at the threshold $T=1/2T_{\mathrm {cov}}(\mathbf {Z}_n^d)$. As a consequence of our methods, we show that the total variation mixing time of the random walk on the lamplighter graph $\mathbf {Z}_2\wr \mathbf {Z}_n^d$, $d\geq3$, has a cutoff with threshold $1/2T_{\mathrm {cov}}(\mathbf {Z}_n^d)$. We give a general criteri…
In this article we investigate the Uniform Spanning Forest ($\mathsf{USF}$) in the nearest-neighbour integer lattice $\mathbf{Z}^{d+1} = \mathbf{Z}\times \mathbf{Z}^d$ with an assignment of conductances that makes the underlying (Network) Random Walk ($\mathsf{NRW}$) drifted towards the right of the first coordinate. This assignment of conductances has exponential growth and decay; in particular, the measure of balls can be made arbitrarily close to zero or arbitrarily large. We establish upper and lower bounds for its Green's function. We show that in dimension $d = 1, 2$ the $\mathsf{USF}$ c…
Consider a family of random walks $S_n^{(a)}=X_1^{(a)}+\cdots+X_n^{(a)}$ with negative drift $\mathbf E X_1^{(a)}=-a<0$ and finite variance $\mbox{var}(X_1^{(a)})=σ^2<\infty$.Let $M^{(a)}=\max_{n\ge 0} S_n^{(a)}$ be the maximums of the random walks. The exponential asymptotics $\mathbf P(aM^{(a)}>x)\sim e^{-2x/σ^2}$, as $a\to 0$, were found by Kingman and are known as heavy traffic approximation in the queueing theory. For subexponential random variables the large deviation asymptotics for $\mathbf P(M^{(a)}>x)\sim \frac{1}{a}\overline F^I(x)$ hold for fixed $a$ as $x\to\infty$. In this paper …
Infinite sums of i.i.d. random variables discounted by a multiplicative random walk are called perpetuities and have been studied by many authors. The present paper provides a log-type moment result for such random variables under minimal conditions which is then utilized for the study of related moments of a.s. limits of certain martingales associated with the supercritical branching random walk. The connection, first observed by the second author in [Iksanov, A.M. (2004). Elementary fixed points of the BRW smoothing transforms with infinite number of summands. Stoch. Proc. Appl. 114, 27-50.]…
Let $M = (M_t)_{t \ge 0}$ be any continuous real-valued stochastic process such that $M_0=0$. Chaumont and Vostrikova proved that if there exists a sequence $(a_n)_{n \ge 1}$ of positive real numbers converging to 0 such that $M$ satisfies the reflection principle at levels 0, $a_n$ and $2a_n$, for each $n \ge 1$, then $M$ is an Ocone local martingale. They also asked whether the reflection principle at levels 0 and $a_n$ only (for each $n \ge 1$) is sufficient to ensure that $M$ is an Ocone local martingale. We give a positive answer to this question, using a slightly different approach, whic…
Let $\mathcal{U}$ be the uniform spanning tree on $\mathbb{Z}^3$, whose probability law is denoted by $\mathbf{P}$. For $\mathbf{P}$-a.s. realization of $\mathcal{U}$, the recurrence of the the simple random walk on $\mathcal{U}$ is proved in [5] and it is also demonstrated in [8] that two independent simple random walks on $\mathcal{U}$ collide infinitely often. In this article, we will give a quantitative estimate on the number of collisions of two independent simple random walks on $\mathcal{U}$, which provides another proof of the infinite collision property of $\mathcal{U}$.
We study strict local martingales via h-transforms, a method which first appeared in Delbaen-Schachermayer. We show that strict local martingales arise whenever there is a consistent family of change of measures where the two measures are not equivalent to one another. Several old and new strict local martingales are identified. We treat examples of diffusions with various boundary behavior, size-bias sampling of diffusion paths, and non-colliding diffusions. A multidimensional generalization to conformal strict local martingales is achieved through Kelvin transform. As curious examples of non…

We give concentration bounds for martingales that are uniform over finite times and extend classical Hoeffding and Bernstein inequalities. We also demonstrate our concentration bounds to be optimal with a matching anti-concentration inequality, proved using the same method. Together these constitute a finite-time version of the law of the iterated logarithm, and shed light on the relationship between it and the central limit theorem.
Our first result is a noncommutative form of Jessen/Marcinkiewicz/Zygmund theorem for the maximal limit of multiparametric martingales or ergodic means. It implies bilateral almost uniform convergence with initial data in the expected Orlicz spaces. A key ingredient is the introduction of the $L_p$-norm of the $\limsup$ of a sequence of operators as a localized version of a $\ell_\infty/c_0$-valued $L_p$-space. In particular, our main result gives a strong $L_1$-estimate for the $\limsup$, as opposed to the usual weak $L_{1,\infty}$-estimate for the $\sup$. Let $\mathcal{L} \mathbf{F}_2$ denot…
