When a local potential changes abruptly in time, an electron gas shifts to a new state which at long times is orthogonal to the one in the absence of the local potential. This is known as Anderson's orthogonality catastrophe and it is relevant for the so-called X-ray edge or Fermi edge singularity, and for tunneling into an interacting one dimensional system of fermions. It often happens that the finite frequency response of the photon absorption or the tunneling density of states exhibits a singular behavior as a function of frequency: $(\frac{ω_{\rm th}}{ω-ω_{\rm th}})^αΘ(ω-ω_{\rm th})$ where $ω_{\rm th}$ is a threshold frequency and $α$ is an exponent characterizing the singular response. In this paper singular responses of spin-incoherent Luttinger liquids are reviewed. Such responses most often do not fall into the familiar form above, but instead typically exhibit logarithmic corrections and display a much higher universality in terms of the microscopic interactions in the theory. Specific predictions are made, the current experimental situation is summarized, and key outstanding theoretical issues related to spin-incoherent Luttinger liquids are highlighted.
Coulomb drag between two spin incoherent Luttinger liquids
Bethe ansatz and bosonization procedures are used to describe the thermodynamics of the strong-coupled Hubbard chain in the \textit{spin-incoherent} Luttinger liquid (LL) regime: $J(\equiv 4t^2/U)\ll k_B T\ll E_F$, where $t$ is the hopping amplitude, $U(\gg t)$ is the repulsive on-site Coulomb interaction, and $k_B T (E_F\sim t)$ is the thermal (Fermi) energy. We introduce a fractional Landau LL approach, whose $U=\infty$ fixed point is exactly mapped onto an ideal gas with two species obeying the Haldane-Wu \textit{exclusion} fractional statistics. This phenomenological approach sheds light o…
In a recent work [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 108}, 136401 (2012)] we have addressed the problem of a Luttinger liquid with a scatterer that allows for both coherent and incoherent scattering channels. We have found that the physics associated with this model is qualitatively different from the elastic impurity setup analyzed by Kane and Fisher, and from the inelastic scattering scenario studied by Furusaki and Matveev, thus proposing a new paradigmatic picture of Luttinger liquid with an impurity. Here we present an extensive study of the renormalization group flows for this problem, the fixed poin…
We introduce a new model for quasi one-dimensional materials, motivated by intriguing but not yet well-understood experiments that have shown two-dimensional polymer films to be promising materials for thermoelectric devices. We consider a two-dimensional material consisting of many one-dimensional systems, each treated as a Luttinger liquid, with weak (incoherent) coupling between them. This approximation of strong interactions within each one-dimensional chain and weak coupling between them is the "quasi-atomic limit." We find integral expressions for the (interchain) transport coefficients,…
We calculate the threshold singularities in one-dimensional models using the universal low-energy formfactors obtained in the framework of the non-linear Luttinger liquid model. We find the reason why the simplified picture of the impurity moving in the Luttinger liquid leads to the correct results. We obtain the prefactors of the singularities including their $k$- dependence at small $k<<p_F$.
The Luttinger Theorem, which relates the electron density to the volume of the Fermi surface in an itinerant electron system, is taken to be one of the essential features of a Fermi liquid. The microscopic derivation of this result depends on the vanishing of a certain integral, the Luttinger integral $I_{\rm L}$, which is also the basis of the Friedel sum rule for impurity models, relating the impurity occupation number to the scattering phase shift of the conduction electrons. It is known that non-zero values of $I_{\rm L}$ with $I_{\rm L}=\pmπ/2$, occur in impurity models in phases with non…
In this work, we show in pedagogical detail that the most singular contributions to the slow part of the asymptotic density-density correlation function of Luttinger liquids with fermions interacting mutually with only short-range forward scattering and also with localised scalar static impurities (where backward scattering takes place) has a compact analytical expression in terms of simple functions that have second order poles and involve only the scale-independent bare transmission and reflection coefficients. This proof uses conventional fermionic perturbation theory resummed to all orders…
A system of one-dimensional electrons interacting via a short-range potential described by Hubbard model is considered in the regime of strong coupling using the Bethe ansatz approach. We study its momentum distribution function at zero temperature and find one additional singularity, at the $3k_{\mathrm{F}}$ point. We identify that the second singularity is of the same Luttinger liquid type as the low-energy one at $k_{\mathrm{F}}$. By calculating the spectral function simultaneously, we show that the second Luttinger liquid at $3k_{\mathrm{F}}$ is formed by charge modes only, unlike the know…
The nonlinear Luttinger liquid phenomenology of one-dimensional correlated Fermi systems is an attempt to describe the effect of the band curvature beyond the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid paradigm. It relies on the observation that the dynamical structure factor of the interacting electron gas shows a logarithmic threshold singularity when evaluated to first order perturbation theory in the two-particle interaction. This term was interpreted as the linear one in an expansion which was conjectured to resum to a power law. A field theory, the mobile impurity model, which is constructed such that it…
We study the dynamical response of the half-filled one-dimensional(1d) Hubbard model for a range of interaction strengths $U$ and temperatures $T$ by a combination of numerical and analytical techniques. Using time-dependent density matrix renormalization group (tDMRG) computations we find that the single-particle spectral function undergoes a crossover to a spin-incoherent Luttinger liquid regime at temperatures $T \sim J=4t^2/U$ for sufficiently large $U > 4t$. At smaller values of $U$ and elevated temperatures the spectral function is found to exhibit two thermally broadened bands of excita…
