With a column density log N(OVI) = 14.95+/-0.05, the OVI absorber at z_abs~0.2028 observed toward the QSO PKS0312-77 (z_em=0.223) is the strongest yet detected at z<0.5. At nearly identical redshift (z_abs=0.2026), we also identify a Lyman limit system (LLS, log N(HI)=18.22). Combining FUV and NUV spectra of PKS0312-77 with optical observations of galaxies in the surrounding field (15'x32'), we present an analysis of these absorbers and their connection to galaxies. The observed OI/HI ratio and photoionization modelling of other low ions indicate the metallicity of the LLS is [Z/H]_LLS=-0.6 and that the LLS is nearly 100% photoionized. In contrast, the OVI-bearing gas is collisionally ionized at T~(3-10)x10^5 K as derived from the high-ion ratios and profile broadenings. Our galaxy survey reveals 13 (0.3<L/L*<1.6) galaxies at ρ<2 h^{-1}_{70} Mpc and |δv|<1100 km/s from the LLS. A probable origin for the LLS is debris from a galaxy merger, which led to a 0.7L* galaxy ([Z/H]_gal=+0.15) atρ~38 h^{-1}_{70} kpc. Outflow from this galaxy may also be responsible for the supersolar ([Z/H]_abs=+0.15), fully ionized absorber at z_abs=0.2018 (-190 km/s from the LLS). The hot OVI absorber likely probes coronal gas about the 0.7 L* galaxy and/or (~0.1 keV) intragroup gas of a spiral-rich system. The association of other strong OVI absorbers with LLS suggests they trace galactic and not intergalactic structures.
The observed intergalactic OVI absorbers at z>0 have been regarded as a significant reservoir of the ``missing baryons''. However, to fully understand how these absorbers contribute to the baryon inventory, it is crucial to determine whether the systems are collisionally ionized or photoionized (or both). Using the identified intergalactic OVI absorbers as tracers, we search for the corresponding X-ray absorption lines, which are useful for finding the missing baryons and for revealing the nature of the OVI absorbers. Stacking the Chandra grating spectra along six AGN sight lines, we obtain th…
We have conducted a systematic survey for intervening OVI absorbers in available echelle spectra of 16 QSOs at z_QSO = 0.17-0.57. These spectra were obtained using HST/STIS with the E140M grating. Our search uncovered a total of 27 foreground OVI absorbers with rest-frame absorption equivalent width W_r(1031) > 25mA. Ten of these QSOs exhibit strong OVI absorbers in their vicinity. Our OVI survey does not require the known presence of Lya, and the echelle resolution allows us to identify the OVI absorption doublet based on their common line centroid and known flux ratio. We estimate the total …
(Abridged) With the goal of investigating the nature of OVI absorbers at high redshifts, we study the effects of proximity to the background quasar. In a sample of sixteen quasars at z(QSO) between 2.14 and 2.87 observed at 6.6 km/s resolution with VLT/UVES, we detect 35 OVI absorption-line systems lying within 8000 km/s of z(QSO). The systems can be categorized into 9 strong and 26 weak OVI absorbers. The strong absorbers are defined by the presence of either broad, fully saturated OVI absorption or partial coverage of the continuum source, and have log N(OVI)>~15.0; these systems are intrins…
We combine a FUSE sample of OVI absorbers (z < 0.15) with a database of 1.07 million galaxy redshifts to explore the relationship between absorbers and galaxy environments. All 37 absorbers with N(OVI) > 10^{13.2} cm^-2 lie within 800 h_70^-1 kpc of the nearest galaxy, with no compelling evidence for OVI absorbers in voids. The OVI absorbers often appear to be associated with environments of individual galaxies. Gas with 10 +/- 5% of solar metallicity (OVI and CIII) has a median spread in distance of 350-500 kpc around L* galaxies and 200-270 kpc around 0.1 L* galaxies (ranges reflect uncertai…
We investigate the existence of a metal-rich OVI population in 10 high spectral resolution quasar spectra and define observational criteria for this class of absorbers. The low temperatures of nearly half of all OVI absorbers (redshifts 2.0 to 2.6), implied by their line widths, are too low for collisional ionization to be a dominant process. We estimate the oxygen abundance under the assumption of photoionization; a striking result is the bimodal distribution of [O/H] with median values close to 0.01 (0.5) solar for the metal-poor (metal-rich) populations. We present the first estimate of the…
We present HST and FUSE observations of the intergalactic absorption toward PG1116+215 in the 900-3000 A spectral region. We detect 25 Ly-alpha absorbers at rest-frame equivalent widths W_r > 30 mA, yielding (dN/dz)_Ly-alpha = 154+/-18 over an unblocked redshift path of 0.162. Two additional weak Ly-alpha absorbers with W_r ~ 15-20 mA are also present. Eight of the Ly-alpha absorbers have large line widths (b > 40 km/sec). The detection of narrow OVI in the broad Ly-alpha absorber at z=0.06244 supports the idea that the Ly-alpha profile is thermally broadened in gas with T > 10^5 K. We find dN…
We conduct an ultraviolet (HST and FUSE) spectroscopic survey of HI (Lyman lines) and seven metal ions (OVI, NV, CIV, CIII, SiIV, SiIII, FeIII) in the low-redshift intergalactic medium (IGM) at z<0.4. We analyzed 650 Lya absorbers over redshift pathlength Delta z=5.27, detecting numerous absorbers: 83 OVI systems, 39 CIII, 53 SiIII, 24 CIV, 24 NV, and so on. Our survey yields distributions in column density and estimates of the IGM baryon content and metallicities of C, N, O in the IGM. In the low-z IGM, we have accounted for ~40% of the baryons: 30% in the photoionized Lya forest and 10% in t…
We report on the multiphase absorption-line system detected at a redshift z = 3.021 in the spectrum of the quasi-stellar object CTQ 325 (z_em = 3.212). The system is displaced by ~14,000 km/s to the blue of the systemic velocity defined by the center of the symmetric OI quasar emission line. It consists of shallow and broad (~700 km/s, FWHM) absorption lines of HI 1215, CIV 1548,1550, and OVI 1032,1038, produced by collisionally ionized gas and of narrow absorption lines (FWHM < 20 km/s) of Ly-alpha, Ly-beta, ..., Ly-6, SiIII 1206, and CIII 977 produced by photoionized gas. Possible origins of…
Artificial absorption spectra are used to test a variety of instrumental and physical effects on the pixel correlation technique for the detection of weak OVI absorption. At HI optical depths <= 0.3-1, the apparent OVI detections are spurious coincidences due to HI absorption at other redshifts. In this range, the apparent OVI optical depth is independent of HI optical depth. At larger HI optical depths, apparent OVI optical depth and HI optical depth are correlated. Detailed modelling is required in order to interpret the significance of this relation. High-resolution spectra of four QSOs tog…
Intergalactic absorbers along lines of sight to distant quasars are a powerful diagnostic for the evolution and content of the intergalactic medium (IGM). In this study, we use the FUSE satellite to search 129 known lya absorption systems at z<0.15 toward 31 AGN for corresponding absorption from higher Lyman lines and the important metal ions OVI. We detect OVI in 40 systems over a smaller range of column density than seen in HI. The co-existence of OVI and HI suggests a multiphase IGM, with warm photoionized and hot ionized components. With improved OVI detection statistics, we find a steep d…
We present HST/STIS and FUSE spectra of the QSO PG 1211+143 (z_em = 0.081) and a galaxy survey of the surrounding field. This sightline shows two strong intergalactic absorption systems at cz ~ 15,300 and 19,300. This sightline addresses the nature and origin of the OVI absorbers, and their connection to galaxies. We explore the relationship of these absorbers to the nearby galaxies and compare them to other OVI-bearing absorbers in diverse environments. At 15,300 km s^-1, we find four distinct HI components and associated CII, CIII, CIV, SiII, SiIII, SiIV, NV, and OVI, lying near a spiral-dom…
We search for OVI absorption in a Keck HIRES spectrum of the z=3.62 quasar Q1422+231. Comparison of CIV measurements to cosmological simulations shows that \lya forest absorbers with N_HI > 10^{14.5} have [C/H]~=-2.5, for the UV background spectrum of Haardt & Madau (HM). Lower column density absorption arises in lower density gas, where OVI is the most sensitive metal tracer. Since OVI lines lie at wavelengths contaminated by Lyman series absorption, we interpret our Q1422 results by comparing to artificial spectra drawn from an SPH simulation of a Lambda-dominated CDM model. A search for dee…
We present the results of a large survey of HI, OVI, and CIII absorption lines in the low-redshift (z<0.3) intergalactic medium (IGM). We begin with 171 strong Lyalpha absorption lines (W>80 mA) in 31 AGN sight lines studied with the Hubble Space Telescope and measure corresponding absorption from higher-order Lyman lines with FUSE. Higher-order Lyman lines are used to determine N_HI and b_HI accurately through a curve-of-growth (COG) analysis. We find that the number of HI absorbers per column density bin is a power-law distribution, dN/dN_HI=N^-beta, with beta_HI=1.68+-0.11. We made 40 detec…
Recent ultraviolet and X-ray observations of intergalactic OVI and OVII absorption systems along lines of sight to bright quasars have opened a new window onto the ``warm-hot intergalactic medium'' (WHIM). These systems appear to provide a significant reservoir for baryons in the local universe, and comparison to cosmological simulations suggests that their abundance roughly matches theoretical predictions. Here we use analytic arguments to elucidate the physical properties of the absorbers and their role in structure formation. We first show that if the absorbers result from structure-formati…
We report the results of a systematic search for signatures of metal lines in quasar spectra of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 3(DR3), focusing on finding intervening absorbers via detection of their OVI doublet. Here we present the search algorithm, and criteria for distinguishing candidates from spurious Lyman $α${} forest lines. In addition, we compare our findings with simulations of the Lyman $α${} forest in order to estimate the detectability of OVI doublets over various redshift intervals. We have obtained a sample of 1756 OVI doublet candidates with rest-frame equival…
The Seyfert 1 galaxy, NGC3516 has been the subject of many absorption line studies at both ultraviolet and X-ray wavelengths. In the UV, strong, broad, variable associated metal line absorption with velocity width $\sim 2000$ \kms\ is thought to originate in gas with nh larger than about $10^{19}$ cm$^{-2}$ lying between 0.01 and 9 pc from the central active nucleus. The Ginga X-ray data are consistent with several possibilities: a warm absorber and a cold absorber combined either with partial covering or an unusually strong reflection spectrum. We present ROSAT observations of NGC3516 which s…
We use FUSE and STIS spectra to study intergalactic absorption towards the quasar PG1259+593 (z=0.478). We identify 135 intergalactic absorption lines with equivalent widths >10mA, tracing 78 absorption components in 72 Ly alpha/beta absorption-line systems. We concentrate on the distribution and physical properties of the WHIM as sampled by OVI and intrinsically broad Ly alpha lines. The number of intervening OVI absorbers for equivalent widths W>24 mA is 3-6 over an unobscured redshift path of dz=0.368. This implies a number density of OVI systems, dN/dz, of ~8-16 along this sight line. This…
NGC 5548 was observed by BeppoSAX in a single long (8 day) observation from 0.2 to 200 keV. We find (1) the spectral variation of the source is produced by a change of the intrinsic power law slope; (2) a high energy cut-off at $E_c= 115^{+39}_{-27}$ keV with a hint of change of $E_c$ with flux; (3) OVII and OVIII absorption K edges, and a possible blended OVII-OVIII K$α,β$ emission feature at $0.54^{+0.07}_{-0.06}$ keV, inconsistent with a purely photoionized gas in equilibrium. We propose that the temperature of the absorbing and emitting gas is $\sim 10^6$ K so that both collisional ionizat…
Recent FUSE and STIS observations of OVI absorption at low redshift along the sightline to distant quasars have been interpreted as the signature of a warm-hot diffuse component of the intergalactic medium (IGM). In these proceedings we show that the predicted numbers of such absorbers in numerical simulations agree with the observed characteristics, lending support to this idea. We find that collisionally ionized lines tend to be stronger and wider, while photo-ionized absorbers are weaker and narrower. We also find that a comparison of the predicted distribution of line widths to that observ…
We report on high resolution spectra of the bright QSO HS0747+4259 (zem = 1.90, V = 15.8) observed to search for intermediate redshift OVI absorption systems. The spectra were obtained by means of the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) at the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and the High Resolution Echelle Spectrometer (HIRES) at the W. M. Keck telescope. We identify 16 OVI systems in the range 1.07 <= z <= 1.87. Among them, six systems with zabs = 1.46-1.8 exhibit a sufficient number of lines of different ionic transitions to estimate the shape of the ionizing radiation field in the rang…
Using a hydrodynamic simulation of a LCDM universe, we investigate the "X-ray forest" absorption imprinted on the spectra of background quasars by the intervening intergalactic medium (IGM). In agreement with previous studies, we find that OVII and OVIII produce the strongest absorption features. The strong oxygen absorbers that might be detectable with Chandra or XMM-Newton arise in gas with T ~ 10^6 K and overdensities delta >~ 100 that are characteristic of galaxy groups. Future X-ray missions could detect weaker oxygen absorption produced by gas with a wider range of temperatures and the l…
In this work, observational evidence for the connection between low column density Lyman-alpha absorbers and large-scale structure traced by gas-rich galaxies is investigated. The HI Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS) galaxy catalogue is cross-correlated with known low redshift, low column density Lyman-alpha absorbers from the literature. The absorber-galaxy cross-correlation function shows that on scales from 1 to 10 h^-1 Mpc, absorbers are imbedded in halos with masses similar to that of galaxy groups. This statistical evidence suggests that galaxy groups could be the dominant environment of lo…
Lyman alpha absorber correlations contain information about the underlying density distribution associated with a particular class of absorbers. As such, they provide an opportunity to independently measure the "bias" of the Lyman alpha forest, i.e. the relationship between HI column density and underlying dark matter density. In these proceedings we use hydrodynamic simulations to investigate whether the evolution of this bias is measurable from observable correlations. Unfortunately, the increasingly complex physics in the IGM at z<1 makes a direct measurement of the bias difficult. Neverthe…
We report on detailed Monte Carlo inversion analysis of five OVI systems from the spectrum of the bright quasar HE 0515-4414 (z_e = 1.71). The associated system at z_a = 1.697 with the neutral hydrogen column density N(HI)= 4.4 10^{13} cm^{-2} shows pronounced absorption from highly ionized transitions of CIII, CIV, NV, OVI, SiIV, and probably SVI. We found that only a power law type ionizing spectrum (J_nu propto nu^{-1.5}) is consistent with the observed sample of the line profiles, i.e. the system is definitely intrinsic. The relative metal abundances give almost the solar pattern and the m…
We present a complete catalogue of 27 O VI absorbers at low redshift (0.12 < z < 0.5) from a blind survey of 16 QSO echelle spectra in the HST/STIS data archive. These absorbers are identified based only upon matching line profiles and the expected doublet ratio between the λλ1031, 1037 transitions. Subsequent searches are carried out to identify their associated transitions. Here we present all relevant absorption properties. By considering absorption components of different species which are well-aligned in velocity-space, we derive gas temperatures and non-thermal broadening values, b_{nt}.…
Recent Chandra and XMM observations of distant quasars have shown strong local (z~0) X-ray absorption lines from highly ionized gas, primarily He-like oxygen. The nature of these X-ray absorbers, i.e., whether they are part of the hot gas associated with the Milky Way or part of the intragroup medium in the Local Group, remains a puzzle due to the uncertainties in the distance. We present in this paper a survey of 20 AGNs with Chandra and XMM archival data. About 40% of the targets show local OVII He-alpha absorption with column densities around 10^16 cm^-2; in particular, OVII absorption is p…
We have analysed a large data set of OVI absorber candidates found in the spectra of 3702 SDSS quasars, focusing on a subsample of 387 AGN sightlines with an average S/N>5.0, allowing for detection of absorbers above rest-frame equivalents widths W_r>0.19 A for the OVI 1032 A component. Accounting for random interlopers mimicking an OVI doublet, we derive for the first time a secure lower limit for the redshift number density $ΔN / Δz$ for redshifts z_abs>2.8. With extensive Monte Carlo simulations we quantify the losses of absorbers due to blending with the ubiquitous Lyman forest lines, and …
We review the ongoing debate about the relationship between low redshift Lyman Alpha absorbers and luminous galaxies. In particular, we discuss the difficulty of `assigning' a particular absorber to a particular galaxy, and consider methods of circumventing this problem. We also provide a status report on an ongoing project collecting more data to address this issue, and show some results for a close together pair of QSOs providing two adjacent lines of sight through the inter-galactic medium.
We present new GHRS observations of Lyman alpha absorption lines associated with a group of galaxies towards the QSO 1545+2101. We have identified eight distinct Lyman alpha absorption features in the spectrum of QSO 1545+2101 at a mean redshift of z=0.2648 with a velocity dispersion of 163 km/s. A group of galaxies is detected in the vicinity of this QSO at a mean redshift of z=0.2645 and velocity dispersion 239 km/s. The identification of discrete absorption systems indicates that they arise in clouds of neutral hydrogen rather than in a diffuse intragroup medium. Our analysis suggests that …
Spectroscopy of ten quasars obtained with the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph (GHRS) of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) is presented. A clustering analysis reveals an excess of nearest neighbor line pairs on velocity scales of 250-750 km/s at a 95-98% confidence level. The hypothesis that the absorbers are randomly distributed in velocity space can be ruled out at the 99.8% confidence level. No two-point correlation power is detected (xi < 1 with 95% confidence). Lyman-alpha absorbers have correlation amplitudes on scales of 250-500 km/s at least 4-5 times smaller than the correlation am…
We present results from two projects in which we have used the HI 21cm emission line as a tracer of gas-rich galaxy populations in the vicinity of Lyman-alpha absorbers. In the first case, we examine the HI environment of SBS 1543+593, the nearest damped Lyman-alpha absorber. We use a VLA map of the region around this LSB galaxy which itself shows an extended HI disk to identify 3 gas rich neighbors within 185 kpc. While it is not clear whether we should expect local damped Lyman-alpha systems to reside in such gas-rich regions, we would expect this kind of environment to be more prevalent at …
We present a galaxy survey of the field surrounding PKS0405-123 performed with the WFCCD spectrometer at Las Campanas Observatory. The survey is comprised of two datasets: (1) a greater than 95% complete survey to R = 20 of the field centered on PKS0405-123 with 10' radius (L~0.1 L_* and radius of 1Mpc at z=0.1); and (2) a set of four discontiguous (i.e. non-overlapping), flanking fields covering ~1 square degree area with completeness ~90% to R=19.5mag. With these datasets, one can examine the local and large-scale galactic environment of the absorption systems identified toward PKS0405-123. …
We present arguments based on the measured abundances in individual damped Lyman alpha systems (DLAs) and sub-damped Lyman alpha systems (sub-DLAs), and also the average abundances inferred in large samples of QSO absorption line systems, to suggest that the amount of dust in intervening QSO absorbers is small and is not responsible for missing many QSOs in magnitude limited QSO surveys. While we can not totally rule out a bimodal dust distribution with a population of very dusty, metal rich, absorbers which push the background QSOs below the observational threshold of current optical spectros…
We study the formation of damped \lya and Lyman limit absorbers in a hierarchical clustering scenario using a gas dynamical simulation of an $Ω= 1$, cold dark matter universe. In the simulation, these high column density systems are associated with forming galaxies. Damped \lya absorption, $N_{HI} \simgt 10^{20.2}\cm^{-2}$, arises along lines of sight that pass near the centers of relatively massive, dense protogalaxies. Lyman limit absorption, $10^{17}\cm^{-2} \simlt N_{HI} \simlt 10^{20.2}\cm^{-2}$, develops on lines of sight that pass through the outer parts of such objects or near the cent…
While it is possible to explain Lyman alpha absorber counts at low redshift using gas which is associated with moderately extended galaxies (Linder 1997), absorbers are often observed to be associated with galaxies at larger impact parameters from quasar lines of sight than are expected from calculated galaxy absorption cross sections in such absorber-galaxy models. However, a large fraction of absorbers is expected to arise in lines sight through galaxies which are low in luminosity and/or surface brightness, so that they are unlikely to be detected in surveys for galaxies close to quasar lin…
A scenario is explored in which Lyman alpha absorbers at low redshift arise from lines of sight through extended galaxy disks, including those of dwarf and low surface brightness galaxies. A population of galaxies is simulated based upon observed distributions of galaxy properties, and the gas disks are modeled using pressure and gravity confinement. Some parameter values are ruled out by comparing simulation results with the observed galaxy luminosity function, and constraints may be made on the absorbing cross sections of galaxies. Simulation results indicate that it is difficult to match ab…
We have obtained high signal:to:noise optical spectroscopy at 5Å resolution of 27 quasars from the APM z$>$4 quasar survey. The spectra have been analyzed to create new samples of high redshift Lyman-limit and damped Lyman-$α$ absorbers. These data have been combined with published data sets in a study of the redshift evolution and the column density distribution function for absorbers with $\log$N(HI)$\ge17.5$, over the redshift range 0.01 $<$ z $<$ 5. The main results are: \begin{itemize} \item Lyman limit systems: The data are well fit by a power law $N(z) = N_0(1 + z)^γ$ for the number den…
Deep, 17.8 hours, narrow band imaging obtained at the ESO 3.5m New Technology Telescope has revealed extended (galaxy sized) Ly-alpha emission from a high redshift Lyman limit absorber. The absorber is a z(abs) approx. z(em) Lyman limit absorber seen in the spectrum of Q1205-30 at z(em)=3.036. The Ly-alpha luminosity of the emission line object is 12-14 x 10e41 h^-2 erg/s for Omega(matter)=1. The size and morphology of the Ly-alpha emitter are both near--identical to those of a previously reported emission line object associated with a DLA at z=1.934 (Fynbo et al. 1999a), suggesting a close co…
We report the discovery of two iron-group enhanced high-metallicity Mg II absorbers in a search through 28 Lyman Alpha forest clouds along the PKS 0454+039 sight line. Based upon our survey and the measured redshift number densities of W_r(MgII) <= 0.3 A absorbers and Lyman Alpha absorbers at z ~ 1, we suggest that roughly 5% of Lyman Alpha absorbers at z < 1 will exhibit "weak" Mg II absorption to a 5-sigma W_r(2796) detection limit of 0.02 A. The two discovered absorbers, at redshifts z = 0.6248 and z = 0.9315, have W_r(Lya) = 0.33 and 0.15 A, respectively. Based upon photoionization modelin…
We present a Very Large Array (VLA) HI 21cm map and optical observations of the region around one of the nearest damped Lyman-alpha absorbers beyond the local group, SBS 1543+593. Two previously uncataloged galaxies have been discovered and a redshift has been determined for a third. All three of these galaxies are at the redshift of SBS 1543+593 and are ~185 kpc from the damped Lyman-alpha absorber. We discuss the HI and optical properties of SBS 1543+593 and its newly identified neighbors. Both SBS 1543+593 and Dwarf 1 have baryonic components that are dominated by neutral gas -- unusual for…
Study of Lyman-alpha absorption lines in the spectra of double line of sight (DLOS) quasars holds the promise of diagnosing the nature of the structures that give rise to Lyman-alpha absorption. Based on simulations of DLOS with various separations through a single population of absorbers, four tests have been designed to diagnose absorber mass distributions (smoothly varying with radius or irregular), geometries (spherical or disk/slab--like), and kinematics (isotropic or systematic velocities). Applying the tests to existing data at redshifts around two we find that: (1) The observed neutral…
We report the first observations of the clustering environment of damped Lyman alpha absorption systems at z=4. Color selection and photometric redshifts were used to select 44 candidate Lyman-break galaxies brighter than I_AB=25.5 from deep BRI images of the 35 sq. arcmin field containing the quasar BR 0951-04. Multislit spectroscopy of 35 candidate galaxies was performed and 8 of these candidates have been confirmed as z>3.5 Lyman-break galaxies. With only BRI photometry, the photometric redshifts are quite accurate for the spectroscopically confirmed galaxies but have a high rate of misclas…
We analyze high resolution spectra of a multi--cloud weak [defined as W_r(MgII) < 0.3 A] absorbing system along the line of sight to PG 1634+706. This system gives rise to a partial Lyman limit break and absorption in MgII, SiII, CII, SiIII, SiIV, CIV, and OVI. The lower ionization transitions arise in two kinematic subsystems with a separation of ~150 km/s. Each subsystem is resolved into several narrow components, having Doppler widths of 3-10 kms. For both subsystems, the OVI absorption arises in a separate higher ionization phase, in regions dominated by bulk motions in the range of 30-40 …
In 2000, we started the program ``Building the Bridge between Damped Ly-alpha Absorbers and Lyman-Break Galaxies: Ly-alpha Selection of Galaxies'' at the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope. This project is an attempt to use Ly-alpha selection of high-z galaxies to bridge the gap between absorption- and emission-selected galaxies by creating a large database of z=3 galaxies belonging to the abundant population of faint (R>25.5) galaxies probed by the Damped Ly-alpha Absorbers (DLAs). Here we present the first results of our program, namely the results from a deep Ly-alpha stud…
The HI Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS) galaxy catalogue is cross-correlated with known low redshift, low column density (N_HI <10^15 cm^-2) Lyman-alpha absorbers from the literature. The redshift-space correlation is found to be similar in strength to HIPASS galaxy self-clustering (correlation length s_0,ag=6+/-4 and s_0,gg=3.1+/-0.5 h^-1 Mpc respectively). In real-space the cross-correlation is stronger than the galaxy auto-correlation (correlation length r_0,ag=7.2+/-1.4 and r_0,gg=3.5+/-0.7 h^-1 Mpc respectively) on scales from 1-10 h^-1 Mpc, ruling out the mini-halo model for the confinemen…
We have used the SEST 15-metre and Onsala 20-metre telescopes to perform deep (r.m.s. >~ 30 mJy) integrations of various molecular rotational transitions towards damped Lyman-alpha absorption systems (DLAs) known to occult millimetre-loud quasars. We have observed 6 new systems and improved the existing limits for 11 transitions. These limits may be approaching the sensitivities required to detect new systems and we present a small number of candidate systems which we believe warrant further observation.
Damped Lyman-alpha absorbers are believed to be associated with galactic disks. We show that gravitational lensing can therefore affect the statistics of these systems. First, the magnification bias due to lensing raises faint QSOs above a given magnitude threshold and thereby enhances the probability for observing damped absorption systems. Second, the bending of light rays from the source effectively limits the minimum impact parameter of the line-of-sight relative to the center of the absorber, thus providing an upper cut-off to the observed neutral hydrogen (HI) column density. The combina…
Intergalactic absorbers along lines of sight to distant quasars are a powerful diagnostic for the evolution and content of the IGM. In this study, we search known low-z Ly-alpha absorption systems for equivalent absorption in higher Lyman lines as well as the important metal ions OVI and CIII. OVI absorption is detected roughly half the time and shows a smaller range of column density than HI. This implies a multi-phase IGM with warm neutral and hot ionized components. We use our OVI detection statistics to determine that the fraction of intergalalctic mass at 10^5-10^6 K is at least 5% of the…
We have carried out a high angular resolution near-infrared imaging study of the fields of 6 quasars with 7 strong absorption line systems at z < 0.5, using the Hokupa'a adaptive optics system and the QUIRC near-infrared camera on the Gemini-North telescope. These absorption systems include 4 classical damped Lyman-alpha absorbers (DLAs), 2 sub-DLAs, and one Lyman-limit system. Images were obtained in the H or K' filters with FWHM between 0.2"-0.5" with the goal of detecting the absorbing galaxies and identifying their morphologies. Features are seen at projected separations of 0.5"-16.0" from…
We model the requirements on observational data that would allow an accurate determination of the degree of association between Lyman alpha absorbers and peaks in the redshift distribution of galaxies (large-scale structures like clusters of galaxies). We compare simulated distributions of low-redshift Lyman alpha absorption systems, constrained to be consistent with the distribution observed with HST, with the large-scale distribution of galaxies determined from pencil-beam redshift surveys. We estimate the amount of observational data required from catalogues of Lyman alpha absorbers and gal…
We study the galaxy number density (smoothed on a 5h^{-1} Mpc scale) around 18 low-redshift Lyman-alpha absorbers previously observed with HST. The absorbers lie in the foregrounds of Mrk 335, Mrk 421, Mrk 501, I Zw 1, and 3C 273, all within regions where there are now complete redshift surveys to m_{Zw}=15.5. We construct a smoothed galaxy number density field from the redshift survey data and determine the distribution of densities at the Lyman-alpha absorber locations. We also find the distribution of galaxy number density for a variety of test samples: all galaxy locations within the Cente…
We combine predictions for several hierarchical cosmogonies with observational evidence on damped Lyman alpha systems to establish a correspondence between the high redshift galaxy population and the properties of damped Lyman alpha systems. We assume that high redshift galaxies and damped Lyman alpha systems are hosted by the same dark matter halos and require consistency between the predicted halo space density, the rate of incidence and the velocity width distribution of damped Lyman alpha systems, and the observed galaxy luminosity function at the bright end. We arrive at the following res…
Eighteen candidates for emission line galaxies were discovered in a narrow-band infrared survey that targeted the redshifts of damped Lyman-alpha or metal lines in the spectra of quasars. The presence of emission lines is inferred from the photometric magnitudes in narrow and broad band interference filters, corresponding to H-alpha at redshifts of 0.89 (6 objects) and 2.4 (10 objects), and [OII] at a redshift of 2.3 (2 objects). Most of the candidates are small resolved objects, compatible with galaxies at the redshifts of the absorbers. Because a similar survey targeted at the redshifts of q…
We report a detection of the 9.7 micrometer silicate absorption feature in a damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) system at z_{abs} = 0.524 toward AO0235+164, using the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope. The feature shows a broad shallow profile over about 8-12 micrometers in the absorber rest frame and appears to be > 15 sigma significant in equivalent width. The feature is fit reasonably well by the silicate absorption profiles for laboratory amorphous olivine or diffuse Galactic interstellar clouds. To our knowledge, this is the first indication of 9.7 micrometer silicate …
We present initial results from a Magellan telescope program to image galaxies that give rise to damped Lyman absorbers (DLAs) at 1.63 < z_DLA < 2.37. Our program differs from previous efforts in that we target quasars with intervening Lyman limit systems (LLS) along the line of sight at redshift z_LLS > 3.5. The higher-redshift LLS is applied as a blocking filter to remove the glare of the background quasar at the rest-frame ultraviolet wavelengths of the foreground galaxy. The complete absence of quasar light offers an unimpeded view along the sightline to the redshift of the LLS, allowing a…
We present a model for the Lyman-alpha absorbers that treats all objects (from the low-density forest clouds to the dense damped systems) in a unified description. This approach is consistent with an earlier model of galaxies (luminosity function, metallicity) but also with the known description of the density field in the small-scale non-linear regime. We consider two cosmological models: a critical universe $Ω=1$ with a CDM power-spectrum, and an open CDM universe with $Ω_0=0.3$, $Λ=0$. We reproduce the available data on column density distribution as a function of redshift, the value of the…
The galaxy giving rise to the damped Ly$α$ absorbing system in the QSO OI 363 with z=0.221 has been found. A galaxy which is probably associated with the second DLA in this same QSO at z=0.0912 has also been found. Neither galaxy is very luminous, and neither galaxy shows signs of extensive current star formation, a massive disk or lots of gas. The impact parameters for each of the two galaxies with respect to the QSO are reasonable. If most DLA absorbers arise in such low luminosity galaxies, it will be difficult to pick out the correct galaxy giving rise to DLA systems at high redshift withi…
The 3C 273 and RX J1230.8+0115 sightlines probe the outskirts of the Virgo Cluster at physical separations between the sightlines of 200-500 h_70 kpc. We present an analysis of HST STIS echelle and FUSE UV spectroscopy of RX J1230.8+0115 in which we detect five Lyman-alpha absorbers at Virgo distances. One of these absorbers is a blend of two strong metal line absorbers coincident in velocity with the highest neutral hydrogen column density absorber in the 3C 273 sightline ~350 h_70 kpc away. The consistency of the metal line column density ratios in the RX J1230.8+0115 sightline allows us to …
We detect 21-cm emission from the Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxy SBS 1543+593, which gives rise to a Damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) absorption line in the spectrum of the background QSO HS 1543+5921 (z=0.807). We obtain an accurate measure of the velocity of the H I gas in the LSB galaxy, v=2868 km/s, and derive a mass of 1.3e9 solar masses. We compare this value with limits obtained towards two other z~0.1 DLA systems, and show that SBS 1543+593 would not have been detected. Hence LSB galaxies similar to SBS 1543+593 can be responsible for DLA systems at even modest redshifts without being det…
We present a study of the expected properties of the low redshift damped Lyman-alpha absorber population determined from a sample of HI-selected galaxies in the local universe. Because of a tight correlation between the HI mass and HI cross-section, which we demonstrate spans all galaxy types, we can use our HI-selected sample to predict the properties of the absorption line systems. We use measurements of the number density and HI cross-section of galaxies to show that the total HI cross-section at column densities sufficient to produce damped Lyman-alpha absorption is consistent with no evol…
