The observed intergalactic OVI absorbers at z>0 have been regarded as a significant reservoir of the ``missing baryons''. However, to fully understand how these absorbers contribute to the baryon inventory, it is crucial to determine whether the systems are collisionally ionized or photoionized (or both). Using the identified intergalactic OVI absorbers as tracers, we search for the corresponding X-ray absorption lines, which are useful for finding the missing baryons and for revealing the nature of the OVI absorbers. Stacking the Chandra grating spectra along six AGN sight lines, we obtain three spectra with signal-to-noise ratios of 32, 28, and 10 per 12.5 mA spectral bin around the expected OVII Kalpha wavelength. These spectra correspond to OVI absorbers with various dynamic properties. We find no detectable NeIX, OVII, OVIII, NVII, or CVI absorption lines in the spectra, but the high counting statistics allows us to obtain firm upper limits on the corresponding ionic column densities (in particular N(OVII)<=10 N(OVI) on average at the 95% confidence level). Jointly analyzing these non-detected X-ray lines with the averaged OVI column density, we further limit the average temperature of the OVI-bearing gas to be log[T(K)]<=5.7 in collisional ionization equilibrium. We discuss the implications of these results for physical properties of the putative warm-hot intergalactic medium and its detection in future X-ray observations.
Recent STIS and FUSE observations have detected OVI absorption lines at low redshift that are not clearly associated with any galactic system. In this paper, we argue that these lines are due to metal enriched hot gas in the intergalactic medium. Using numerical simulations of a cosmological-constant dominated cosmology, combined with reasonable assumptions about the metallicity distribution, we show that the number density and internal characteristics of these lines are correctly predicted. We find that the OVI is primarily produced by collisional ionization from gas at a few times 10^5 K for…
Intergalactic absorbers along lines of sight to distant quasars are a powerful diagnostic for the evolution and content of the intergalactic medium (IGM). In this study, we use the FUSE satellite to search 129 known lya absorption systems at z<0.15 toward 31 AGN for corresponding absorption from higher Lyman lines and the important metal ions OVI. We detect OVI in 40 systems over a smaller range of column density than seen in HI. The co-existence of OVI and HI suggests a multiphase IGM, with warm photoionized and hot ionized components. With improved OVI detection statistics, we find a steep d…
We present a high resolution (R~500) X-ray spectrum of the bright quasar H1821+643 (z=0.297), obtained in a 470 ksec Chandra observation. We search for X-ray absorption by highly ionized metal species, OVII and OVIII in particular, at the redshifts of the six intervening OVI absorption systems known from UV studies. We detect features with >~2-sigma significance at the predicted OVII and OVIII wavelengths of one OVI system, at the OVII wavelength of a second, and at the NeIX wavelength of a third. We find two additional features of comparable strength (one OVII and one OVIII) within 1000 km/s …
We report the first detection of an OVIII Ly-alpha absorption line associated with an overdense region in the intergalactic medium (IGM) along the sightline towards PKS 2155-304 with the Chandra Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS). The absorption line is detected at 4.5 sigma level with cz~16,600 km/s. At the same velocity Shull et al.(1998) detected a small group of spiral galaxies (with an overdensity of delta_gal ~ 100) and low metallicity HI Ly-alpha clouds. We constrain the intragroup gas that gives rise to the OVIII Ly-alpha line to a baryon density in the range 1e-5 < n…
Most of cosmic baryons predicted by the big-bang nucleosynthesis has evaded the direct detection. Recent numerical simulations indicate that approximately 30 to 50 percent of the total baryons in the present universe is supposed to take a form of warm/hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) whose X-ray continuum emission is very weak. To identify those missing baryons, we consider in detail the detectability of WHIM directly through emission lines of OVII (561, 568, 574, 665eV) and OVIII (653eV). For this purpose, we create mock spectra of the emission lines of WHIM using a light-cone output of the co…
Time evolution of the ionization state of metals in the cosmic baryons is investigated in a cosmological context without the assumption of ionization equilibrium. We find that a significant fraction of ionized oxygen ions (OVII and OVIII) in the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) is not in the ionization equilibrium state at a redshift of z~0. We also investigate the effect on the detectability and observables of WHIM as a consequence of such deviation from ionization equilibrium. It is found that the detectability of WHIM is not altered very much both through its emission and absorption sig…
We conduct an ultraviolet (HST and FUSE) spectroscopic survey of HI (Lyman lines) and seven metal ions (OVI, NV, CIV, CIII, SiIV, SiIII, FeIII) in the low-redshift intergalactic medium (IGM) at z<0.4. We analyzed 650 Lya absorbers over redshift pathlength Delta z=5.27, detecting numerous absorbers: 83 OVI systems, 39 CIII, 53 SiIII, 24 CIV, 24 NV, and so on. Our survey yields distributions in column density and estimates of the IGM baryon content and metallicities of C, N, O in the IGM. In the low-z IGM, we have accounted for ~40% of the baryons: 30% in the photoionized Lya forest and 10% in t…
Artificial absorption spectra are used to test a variety of instrumental and physical effects on the pixel correlation technique for the detection of weak OVI absorption. At HI optical depths <= 0.3-1, the apparent OVI detections are spurious coincidences due to HI absorption at other redshifts. In this range, the apparent OVI optical depth is independent of HI optical depth. At larger HI optical depths, apparent OVI optical depth and HI optical depth are correlated. Detailed modelling is required in order to interpret the significance of this relation. High-resolution spectra of four QSOs tog…
We present the results of a large survey of HI, OVI, and CIII absorption lines in the low-redshift (z<0.3) intergalactic medium (IGM). We begin with 171 strong Lyalpha absorption lines (W>80 mA) in 31 AGN sight lines studied with the Hubble Space Telescope and measure corresponding absorption from higher-order Lyman lines with FUSE. Higher-order Lyman lines are used to determine N_HI and b_HI accurately through a curve-of-growth (COG) analysis. We find that the number of HI absorbers per column density bin is a power-law distribution, dN/dN_HI=N^-beta, with beta_HI=1.68+-0.11. We made 40 detec…
We use FUSE and STIS spectra to study intergalactic absorption towards the quasar PG1259+593 (z=0.478). We identify 135 intergalactic absorption lines with equivalent widths >10mA, tracing 78 absorption components in 72 Ly alpha/beta absorption-line systems. We concentrate on the distribution and physical properties of the WHIM as sampled by OVI and intrinsically broad Ly alpha lines. The number of intervening OVI absorbers for equivalent widths W>24 mA is 3-6 over an unobscured redshift path of dz=0.368. This implies a number density of OVI systems, dN/dz, of ~8-16 along this sight line. This…
Using a hydrodynamic simulation of a LCDM universe, we investigate the "X-ray forest" absorption imprinted on the spectra of background quasars by the intervening intergalactic medium (IGM). In agreement with previous studies, we find that OVII and OVIII produce the strongest absorption features. The strong oxygen absorbers that might be detectable with Chandra or XMM-Newton arise in gas with T ~ 10^6 K and overdensities delta >~ 100 that are characteristic of galaxy groups. Future X-ray missions could detect weaker oxygen absorption produced by gas with a wider range of temperatures and the l…
The abundances of metals in the intergalactic medium (IGM) can be used to constrain the amount of star formation at high redshift and the spectral shape of the ionizing background radiation. For both purposes it is essential to measure the abundances in regions of low density, away from local sources of metals and ionizing photons. Here we report the first detection of OVI in the low-density IGM at high redshift. We perform a pixel-by-pixel search for OVI absorption in eight high quality quasar spectra spanning the redshift range z = 2.0-4.5. At 2 ~< z ~< 3, we clearly detect OVI in the form o…
We present a detailed analysis of the intergalactic metal-line absorption systems in the archival HST/STIS and FUSE ultraviolet spectra of the low-redshift quasar PKS1302-102 (z_QSO = 0.2784). We supplement the archive data with CLOUDY ionization models and a survey of galaxies in the quasar field. There are 15 strong Lya absorbers with column densities logN_HI > 14. Of these, six are associated with at least CIII 977 absorption (logN(C^++) > 13); this implies a redshift density dN_CIII/dz = 36+13/-9 (68% confidence limits) for the five detections with rest equivalent width W_r > 50 mA. Two sy…
We use spectroscopic data from HST and FUSE to study the wide range of ionization states of the "highly ionized high-velocity clouds". Studied extensively in OVI absorption, these clouds are usually assumed to be infalling gas in the Galactic halo at distances less than 50 kpc. An alternative model attributes the OVI (and OVII X-ray absorption) to cosmological structures of low-density, shock-heated intergalactic gas, distributed over 1-3 Mpc surrounding the Milky Way. The latter interpretation is unlikely, owing to the enormous required mass of gas (4x10^12 M_solar). Our detection, in 9 of 12…
We present HST and FUSE observations of the intergalactic absorption toward PG1116+215 in the 900-3000 A spectral region. We detect 25 Ly-alpha absorbers at rest-frame equivalent widths W_r > 30 mA, yielding (dN/dz)_Ly-alpha = 154+/-18 over an unblocked redshift path of 0.162. Two additional weak Ly-alpha absorbers with W_r ~ 15-20 mA are also present. Eight of the Ly-alpha absorbers have large line widths (b > 40 km/sec). The detection of narrow OVI in the broad Ly-alpha absorber at z=0.06244 supports the idea that the Ly-alpha profile is thermally broadened in gas with T > 10^5 K. We find dN…
Recent ultraviolet and X-ray observations of intergalactic OVI and OVII absorption systems along lines of sight to bright quasars have opened a new window onto the ``warm-hot intergalactic medium'' (WHIM). These systems appear to provide a significant reservoir for baryons in the local universe, and comparison to cosmological simulations suggests that their abundance roughly matches theoretical predictions. Here we use analytic arguments to elucidate the physical properties of the absorbers and their role in structure formation. We first show that if the absorbers result from structure-formati…
We present HST/STIS and FUSE spectra of the QSO PG 1211+143 (z_em = 0.081) and a galaxy survey of the surrounding field. This sightline shows two strong intergalactic absorption systems at cz ~ 15,300 and 19,300. This sightline addresses the nature and origin of the OVI absorbers, and their connection to galaxies. We explore the relationship of these absorbers to the nearby galaxies and compare them to other OVI-bearing absorbers in diverse environments. At 15,300 km s^-1, we find four distinct HI components and associated CII, CIII, CIV, SiII, SiIII, SiIV, NV, and OVI, lying near a spiral-dom…
We have studied the abundance of oxygen in the IGM by analyzing OVI, CIV, SiIV, and HI pixel optical depths derived from a set of high-quality VLT and Keck spectra of 17 QSOs at 2.1 < z < 3.6. Comparing OVI and CIV optical depth ratios to those in realistic, synthetic spectra drawn from a hydrodynamical simulation and comparing to existing constraints on [Si/C] places strong constraints on the ultraviolet background (UVB) model using weak priors on allowed values of [Si/O]: for example, a quasar-only background yields [Si/O] ~ 1.4, highly inconsistent with the [Si/O] ~ 0 expected from nucleosy…
Results are presented for our search for warm-hot gas towards the quasar Q 0329-385. We identify ten OVI systems of which two are within 5000 km/s of z_em and a third one should be of intrinsic origin. The seven remaining systems have HI column densities 10^13.7<N(HI)<10^15.6 cm^-2. At least ~1/3 of the individual OVI sub-systems have temperatures T<1x10^5 K and cannot originate in collisionally ionized gas. Photoionization by a hard UV background field reproduces well the ionic ratios for metallicities in the range 10^-2.5 - 10^-0.5 solar, with possibly sub-solar N/C relative abundance. For […
We use high spectral resolution (R=45000) and high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N \~ 35-70 per pixel) spectra of 19 high-redshift (2.1<z_em<3.2) quasars to investigate the metal content of the low-density intergalactic medium using pixel-by-pixel procedures. This high quality homogeneous survey gives the possibility to statistically search for metals at HI optical depths smaller than unity. We find that the gas is enriched in carbon and oxygen for neutral hydrogen optical depths tau(HI)>1. Our observations strongly suggest that the CIV/HI ratio decreases with decreasing tau(HI) with log[tau(CIV)]=…
We present our proposal for a small X-ray mission DIOS (Diffuse Intergalactic Oxygen Surveyor), consisting of a 4-stage X-ray telescope and an array of TES microcalorimeters, cooled with mechanical coolers, with a total weight of about 400 kg. The mission will perform survey observations of warm-hot intergalactic medium using OVII and OVIII emission lines, with the energy coverage up to 1.5 keV. The wide field of view of about 50' diameter, superior energy resolution close to 2 eV FWHM, and very low background will together enable us a wide range of science for diffuse X-ray sources. We briefl…
Hydrodynamic simulations of growth of cosmic structure suggest that 30-50% of the total baryons at z=0 may be in a warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) with temperatures ~10^5-10^7K. The O VI λλ1032, 1038 absorption line doublet in the FUV portion of QSO spectra provides an important probe of this gas. Utilizing recent hydrodynamic simulations, it is found that there should be ~5 O VI absorption lines per unit redshift with equivalent widths >= 35 mA, decreasing rapidly to ~0.5 per unit redshift at >= 350 mA. About 10% of the total baryonic matter or 20-30% of the WHIM is expected to be in the…
We have obtained moderate resolution spectra of the bright QSO H1821+643 (z=0.297) in the wavelength interval 990-1185A with FUSE. Strong, complex OVI 1032 and FeII 1145 absorption arising in gas above several spiral arms and the outer warp of our Galaxy is detected. We have identified absorption by a high negative-velocity (-215 km/s) component of OVI, which corresponds to the limiting velocity of v_LSR = 190+/-20 km/s for Milky Way gas along this line of sight, assuming corotation of disk and halo gas and a flat rotation curve for the outer galaxy. We report the detection of four absorbers i…
We present our proposal for a small X-ray mission DIOS (Diffuse Intergalactic Oxygen Surveyor) to perform survey observations of warm-hot intergalactic medium using OVII and OVIII emission lines. This will be proposed to a small satellite program planned by ISAS/JAXA in Japan for a launch in 2008. The instrument consists of an array of TES microcalorimeters with an energy resolution 2 eV, cooled by mechanical coolers. The X-ray telescope will employ 4-stage reflection mirrors with a focal length as short as 70 cm and an angular resolution 2'. In addition to DIOS, we briefly describe the NeXT (…
We present the first X-ray detection of resonant absorption from warm/hot local gas either in our Galaxy, or in the Intergalactic space surrounding our Galaxy, along the line of sight toward the blazar PKS 2155-304. The Chandra HRCS-LETG spectrum of this z=0.116 source clearly shows unresolved OVII(Ka) and NeIX(Ka) resonant absorption lines at 21.603 A and 13.448 A (i.e. cz = [-340--200] km/s in the rest frame, from the OVII line). OVIII(Ka) and OVII(Kb) from the same system are also detected at a lower significance level, while upper limits are set on OVIII(Kb), NeX(Ka) and NeIX(Kb). The FUSE…
We use numerical simulations of structure formation in a Cold Dark Matter model to predict the absorption lines in the soft X-rays produced by heavy elements in the shock-heated intergalactic medium at low redshift. The simulation incorporates a model for metal production in galaxies and the subsequent dispersion of the metals to the intergalactic medium. We analyze in particular absorption lines produced by oxygen, and calculate the ionization stage taking into account the observed X-ray background at the present time. We find that oxygen is fully ionized by the X-ray background in low-densit…
Intergalactic absorbers along lines of sight to distant quasars are a powerful diagnostic for the evolution and content of the IGM. In this study, we search known low-z Ly-alpha absorption systems for equivalent absorption in higher Lyman lines as well as the important metal ions OVI and CIII. OVI absorption is detected roughly half the time and shows a smaller range of column density than HI. This implies a multi-phase IGM with warm neutral and hot ionized components. We use our OVI detection statistics to determine that the fraction of intergalalctic mass at 10^5-10^6 K is at least 5% of the…
We discuss physical properties and the baryonic content of the Warm-hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM) at low redshifts. Cosmological simulations predict that the WHIM contains a large fraction of the baryons at z=0 in the form of highly-ionized gas at temperatures between 10^5 and 10^7 K. Using high-resolution ultraviolet spectra obtained with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) and the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) we have studied the WHIM at low redshifts by searching for intervening OVI and thermally broadened Lyman alpha (BL) absorption toward a number of quasars …
Recent FUSE and STIS observations of OVI absorption at low redshift along the sightline to distant quasars have been interpreted as the signature of a warm-hot diffuse component of the intergalactic medium (IGM). In these proceedings we show that the predicted numbers of such absorbers in numerical simulations agree with the observed characteristics, lending support to this idea. We find that collisionally ionized lines tend to be stronger and wider, while photo-ionized absorbers are weaker and narrower. We also find that a comparison of the predicted distribution of line widths to that observ…
We present a direct measurement of the metallicity distribution function for the high redshift intergalactic medium. We determine the shape of this function using survival statistics, which account for both detections and non-detections of OVI and CIV associated with HI absorption in quasar spectra. Our OVI sample probes the metal content of ~50% of all baryons at z~2.5. We find a median intergalactic abundance of [O,C/H]=-2.82; the differential abundance distribution is approximately lognormal with mean <[C,O/H]>~-2.85 and σ=0.75 dex. Some 60-70% the Lya forest lines are enriched to observabl…
We report the Chandra detection of OVII Kαabsorption at z=0 in the direction of the z=0.03 Seyfert 1 galaxy Mkn 279. The high velocity cloud Complex C lies along this line of sight, with HI 21-cm emission and OVI 1032Åabsorption both observed at velocities of ~ -150 km/s relative to the local standard of rest. We present an improved method for placing limits on the Doppler parameter and column density of a medium when only one unresolved line can be measured; this method is applied to the OVII absorption seen here, indicating that the OVII Doppler parameter is inconsistent with that of any low…
We present an 82 ksec Chandra ACIS-I observation of a large-scale hierarchical complex, which consists of various clusters/groups of galaxies and low-surface brightness X-ray emission at z = 0.247. This high-resolution {\sl Chandra} observation allows us for the first time to separate unambiguously the X-ray contributions from discrete sources and large-scale diffuse hot gas. We detect 99 X-ray sources in a $17^\prime \times 17^\prime$ field. Ten of these sources are identified as members of the complex and are mostly radio-bright. Whereas unresolved X-ray sources tend to be associated with ga…
We searched for redshifted O emission lines from the possible warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) surrounding the cluster of galaxies A2218 at z=0.1756 using the XIS instrument on Suzaku. This cluster is thought to have an elongated structure along the line of sight based on previous studies. We studied systematic uncertainties in the spectrum of the Galactic emission and in the soft X-ray response of the detectors due to the contamination building up on the XIS filters. We detected no significant redshifted O lines, and set a tight constraint on the intensity with upper limits for the surfac…
About half of the baryons in the local Universe are thought to reside in the so-called warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) at temperatures of 0.1-10 million K. Thermal soft excess emission in the spectrum of some cluster outskirts that contains OVII and/or OVIII emission lines is regarded as evidence of the WHIM, although the origin of the lines is controversial due to strong Galactic and solar system foreground emission. We observed the Coma-11 field, where the most prominent thermal soft excess has ever been reported, with Suzaku XIS in order to make clear the origin of the excess. We did n…
With the Chandra X-ray Telescope we have detected a zero-redshift OVII He-alpha absorption line along the sight line toward 3C 273. This line detection is highly significant, with a signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of 6.4. We explore two models, which associate this line with (1) the intragroup gas in the Local Group, and (2) the hot halo gas in the vicinity of our Milky Way. In the first model, we find that for a standard beta-model of the gas distribution in the Local Group, the temperature is constrained to 2.3e5 < T < 1.2e6 K and the baryon overdensity is delta_b ~ 100; both results are consist…
We present an analysis of interstellar and intergalactic absorption lines in the FUSE spectrum of the low-redshift quasar PG0804+761 (z=0.100) at intermediate resolution (FWHM=25 km/s) in the direction l=138.3, b=31.0. With a good signal-to-noise ratio and the presence of several interesting Galactic and extragalactic absorption components along the sight line, this spectrum provides a good opportunity to demonstrate the ability of FUSE to do both interstellar and extragalactic science. Although the spectrum of PG0804+761 is dominated by strong absorption from local Galactic gas, we concentrat…
The X-ray bright z=0.116 quasar PKS 2155-304 is frequently observed as a Chandra calibration source, with a total of 483 ksec of Low Energy Transmission Grating (LETG) exposure time accumulated through May 2006. Highly-ionized metal absorption lines, including numerous lines at z=0 and a putative OVIII K-alpha line at z=0.055, have been reported in past Chandra studies of this source. Using all available Chandra LETG spectra and analysis techniques developed for such z=0 X-ray absorption along other sightlines, we revisit these previous detections. We detect 4 absorption lines at >3σsignifican…
We present new observations on PKS 2155-304 with the Chandra Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETG), using the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS). We confirm the detection of an absorption line plausibly identified as OVIII Ly-alpha from the warm-hot intergalactic medium associated with a small group of galaxies along the line of sight, as originally reported by Fang et al. 2002 (here after FANG02). Combining the previous observations in FANG02 and five new, long observations on the same target, we increase the total exposure time by a factor of three, and the total counts p…
We present the first >=3.5 sigma (conservative) or >=5.8 sigma (sum of lines significance) detection of two Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM) filaments at z>0, which we find along the line of sight to the blazar Mkn 421. These systems are detected through highly ionized resonant metal absorption in high quality Chandra-ACIS and -HRC Low Energy Transmission Grating (LETG) spectra of Mkn 421, obtained following our two Target of Opportunity requests during two outburst phases. The two intervening WHIM systems that we detect, have OVII and NVII columns of N(OVII)=(1.0 +/- 0.3) x 1e15 cm-2} N(N…
The environment of high-redshift galaxies is characterized by both wind-driven outflowing gas and gravitationally infalling streams. To investigate such galaxy-IGM interplay we have generated synthetic optical absorption line spectra piercing the volume surrounding a starbursting analog of a Lyman Break Galaxy selected in a $z \approx 3$ output from a SPH simulation, including a detailed treatment of mechanical feedback from winds. Distributions for several observable species (HI, CIII, CIV, SiII, SiIII, SiIV, OVI, OVII, and OVIII) have been derived by post-processing the simulation outputs. T…
To detect a warm-hot intergalactic medium associated with the large-scale structure of the universe, we observed a quasar behind the Virgo cluster with XMM-Newton. With a net exposure time of 54 ks, we marginally detected an OVIII K alpha absorption line at 650.9 +0.8/-1.9 eV in the RGS spectra, with a statistical confidence of 96.4 %. The observed line center energy is consistent with the redshift of M87, and hence the absorber is associated with the Virgo cluster. From the curve of growth, the OVIII column density was estimated to be > 7 x 10^16 cm^-2. In the EPIC spectra, excess emission wa…
We report a ~3 sigma detection of a 21.82 A absorption feature in the direction of the BL Lac MRK 421 which is interpreted as OVII K(alpha) at z~0.01. This corresponds to the redshift of a H absorber in a cosmic void detected by HST along the line of sight of the same object. The 21.82 A line proves the existence of warm/hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) outside the Local Group, in agreement with current models of structure formation in the Universe. The WHIM at z~0.01 has temperature <~(2.5-4)E6 K for gas densities in the range 1E-6 - 1 atom/cm3. We also detect OVII, OVIII and NeIX absorption l…
With a column density log N(OVI) = 14.95+/-0.05, the OVI absorber at z_abs~0.2028 observed toward the QSO PKS0312-77 (z_em=0.223) is the strongest yet detected at z<0.5. At nearly identical redshift (z_abs=0.2026), we also identify a Lyman limit system (LLS, log N(HI)=18.22). Combining FUV and NUV spectra of PKS0312-77 with optical observations of galaxies in the surrounding field (15'x32'), we present an analysis of these absorbers and their connection to galaxies. The observed OI/HI ratio and photoionization modelling of other low ions indicate the metallicity of the LLS is [Z/H]_LLS=-0.6 an…
We investigate the existence of a metal-rich OVI population in 10 high spectral resolution quasar spectra and define observational criteria for this class of absorbers. The low temperatures of nearly half of all OVI absorbers (redshifts 2.0 to 2.6), implied by their line widths, are too low for collisional ionization to be a dominant process. We estimate the oxygen abundance under the assumption of photoionization; a striking result is the bimodal distribution of [O/H] with median values close to 0.01 (0.5) solar for the metal-poor (metal-rich) populations. We present the first estimate of the…
We carry out cosmological chemodynamical simulations with different strengths of supernova (SN) feedback and study how galactic winds from star-forming galaxies affect the features of hydrogen (HI) and metal (CIV and OVI) absorption systems in the intergalactic medium at high redshift. We find that the outflows tend to escape to low density regions, and hardly affect the dense filaments visible in HI absorption. As a result, the strength of HI absorption near galaxies is not reduced by galactic winds, but even slightly increases. We also find that a lack of HI absorption for lines of sight (LO…
Simulations predict that shocks from large-scale structure formation and galactic winds have reduced the fraction of baryons in the warm, photoionized phase (the Lya forest) from nearly 100% in the early universe to less than 50% today. Some of the remaining baryons are predicted to lie in the warm-hot ionized medium (WHIM) phase at T=10^5-10^7 K, but the quantity remains a highly tunable parameter of the models. Modern UV spectrographs have provided unprecedented access to both the Lya forest and potential WHIM tracers at z~0, and several independent groups have constructed large catalogs of …
We present results from an analysis of FUSE and HST/STIS spectroscopy of the z_em=0.57 quasar PKS0405-123. We focus on the intervening metal-line systems identified along the sightline and investigate their ionization mechanism, ionization state, and chemical abundances. We identify six OVI absorbers to a 3sigma equivalent width (EW) limit of 60mA. This implies an incidence dN/dz = 16^{+9}_{-6} consistent with previous OVI studies. In half of the OVI systems we report positive detections of CIII suggesting the gas is predominantly photoionized, has multiple ionization phases, or is in a non-eq…
We present a unified analysis of the O{\sc vi} absorption-lines seen in the disk and halo of the Milky Way, high velocity clouds, the Magellanic Clouds, starburst galaxies, and the intergalactic medium. We show that these disparate systems define a simple relationship between the O{\sc vi} column density and absorption-line width that is independent of the Oxygen abundance over the range O/H $\sim$ 10% to twice solar. We show that this relation is exactly that predicted theoretically as a radiatively cooling flow of hot gas passes through the coronal temperature regime - independent of its den…
We present the high-resolution X-ray spectra of Mkn 421 obtained in November 2003 with the RGS aboard the XMM-Newton satellite. This Target of Opportunity observation was triggered because the source was in a high state of activity in the X-ray band. These data are compared with three archival RGS observations of the same source performed in November and December 2002 and one in June 2003. We searched for the presence of absorption features due to warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM). We identify various spectral features, most of which are of instrumental origin. With the sensitivity provided…
We use a high-resolution cosmological simulation that includes hydrodynamics, multiphase star formation, and galactic winds to predict the distribution of metal line emission at z~0 from the intergalactic medium (IGM). We focus on two ultraviolet doublet transitions, OVI 1032,1038 and CIV 1548,1551. Emission from filaments with moderate overdensities is orders of magnitude smaller than the background, but isolated emission from enriched, dense regions with T~10^5-10^5.5 K and characteristic sizes of 50-100 kpc can be detected above the background. We show that the emission from these regions i…
At low redshift, only about one-tenth of the known baryons lie in galaxies or the hot gas seen in galaxy clusters and groups. Models posit that these "missing baryons" are in gaseous form in overdense filaments that connect the much denser virialized groups and clusters. About 30% are cool (<1E5 K) and are detected in Ly alpha absorption studies, but about half is predicted to lie in the 1E5-1E7 K regime. Gas is detected in the 2-5E5 K range through OVI absorption studies (7% of the baryons) and possibly near 1E5 K from broad Ly absorption (20% of the baryons). Hotter gas (0.5-2E6 K) is detect…
We investigate the impact of environment on the metallicity of the diffuse intergalactic medium. We use pixel correlation techniques to search for weak CIV and OVI absorption in the spectrum of quasar Q1422+231 in regions of the spectrum close to and far from galaxies at z ~ 3. This is achieved both by using the positions of observed Lyman break galaxies and by using strong CIV absorption as a proxy for the presence of galaxies near the line of sight. We find that the metal line absorption is a strong function of not only the HI optical depth (and thus gas density) but also proximity to highly…
Recent observations with the dispersive X-ray spectrometers aboard Chandra and Newton Observatory have begun to probe the properties of the X-ray intergalactic medium (IGM) at small redshifts. Using large quantities (~950 ksec) of spectroscopic data acquired using the RGS aboard Newton Observatory, we investigated the intervening material toward three low redshift, high Galactic latitude AGNs with nominally featureless spectra: Mrk421, PKS2155-304 and 3C273. Each spectrum provides clear evidence for what appears to be a local (z~0), highly ionized absorbing medium betrayed by the OVII 1s-2p re…
Absorption-line spectroscopy of 23 background QSOs and numerous background galaxies has let us measure the spatial distribution of metals and neutral hydrogen around 1044 UV-selected galaxies at redshifts 1.8<z<3.3. The typical galaxy is surrounded to radii r~40 proper kpc by gas that has a large velocity spread (dv>260 km/s) and produces very strong absorption lines (N_CIV >> 10^14 cm^-2) in the spectra of background objects. Absorption with an average column density of N_CIV ~ 10^14 cm^-2 extends to 80 kpc, a radius large enough to imply that most strong intergalactic CIV absorption is assoc…
We have used the Hubble/STIS and FUSE archives of ultraviolet spectra of bright AGN to identify intergalactic Lya absorbers in nearby (z < 0.1) voids. From a parent sample of 651 Lya absorbers, we identified 61 void absorbers located more than 1.4/h_70 Mpc from the nearest L* or brighter galaxy. Searching for metal absorption in high-quality (S/N > 10) spectra at the location of three diagnostic metal lines (O VI 1032, C IV 1548, Si III 1206), we detected no metal lines in any individual absorber, or in any group of absorbers using pixel co-addition techniques. The best limits on metal-line ab…
We have used the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer to search for OVI 1031.926 Angstrom emission at four locations in the starburst superwind of M82. No OVI emission was detected at any of the four pointings, with upper limits less than or equal to the 0.3-2 keV X-ray flux. These observations limit the energy lost through radiative cooling of coronal phase (T~300,000 K) gas to roughly the same magnitude as that lost in the hot phase through X-ray emission, which has been shown to be small. The wind material retains most of its energy and should be able to escape from the gravitational pote…
We use new studies of the cosmic evolution of star-forming galaxies to estimate the production rate of ionizing photons from hot, massive stars at low and intermediate redshifts. The luminosity function of blue galaxies in the Canada-France Redshift Survey shows appreciable evolution in the redshift interval z=0-1.3, and generates a background intensity at 1 ryd of J_L~ 1.3 x 10^{-21} f_{esc} ergs cm^{-2} s^{-1} Hz^{-1} sr^{-1} at z~0.5, where f_esc is the unknown fraction of stellar Lyman-continuum photons which can escape into the intergalactic space, and we have assumed that the absorption …
For the low density filamentary and sheet-like structures in the warm ($\sim 10^4$ to $\sim 10^6$ K) IGM predicted by numerical simulations the resonant line scattering of X-ray background (XRB) photons by He and H-like ions of heavy elements can exceed the ``local'' thermal emission by a factor of a few or more. Due to the conservative nature of scattering this resonantly scattered radiation can only be identified if a significant fraction of the XRB is resolved and removed. While the combined spectrum of the resolved sources will contain X-ray absorption features, the residual background wil…
We describe our surveys of low column density Lyman-alpha absorbers [N(HI) = 10^(12.5-16.0) cm^-2], which show that the warm photoionized IGM contains 30% of all baryons at z < 0.1. This fraction is consistent with cosmological simulations, which also predict that an additional 20-40% of the baryons reside in hotter 10^(5-7) K gas, the warm-hot IGM (WHIM). The observed line density of Lya absorbers, dN/dz = 170 for N(HI) > 10^(12.8) cm^-2, is dominated by low-N(HI) systems that exhibit slower redshift evolution than those with N(HI) >10^(14). HST/FUSE surveys of OVI absorbers, together with re…
XMM-Newton observations of the outskirts of the Coma cluster of galaxies confirm the existence of a soft X-ray excess claimed previously and show it comes from warm thermal emission. Our data provide a robust estimate of its temperature (~0.2 keV) and oxygen abundance (~0.1 solar). Using a combination of XMM-Newton and ROSAT All-Sky Survey data, we rule out a Galactic origin of the soft X-ray emission. Associating this emission with a 20 Mpc region in front of Coma, seen in the skewness of its galaxy velocity distribution, yields an estimate of the density of the warm gas of ~50 f_baryon rho_c…
