We have analysed a large data set of OVI absorber candidates found in the spectra of 3702 SDSS quasars, focusing on a subsample of 387 AGN sightlines with an average S/N>5.0, allowing for detection of absorbers above rest-frame equivalents widths W_r>0.19 A for the OVI 1032 A component. Accounting for random interlopers mimicking an OVI doublet, we derive for the first time a secure lower limit for the redshift number density $ΔN / Δz$ for redshifts z_abs>2.8. With extensive Monte Carlo simulations we quantify the losses of absorbers due to blending with the ubiquitous Lyman forest lines, and estimate the success rate of retrieving each individual candidate as a function of its redshift, the emission redshift of the quasar, the strength of the absorber and the measured S/N of the spectrum by modelling typical Ly forest spectra. These correction factors allow us to derive the 'incompleteness and S/N corrected' redshift number densities of OVI absorbers :$ΔN _{OVI, c} / Δz_{c} (2.8 < z < 3.2) = 4.6+-0.3, at 3.2 < z < 3.6 = 6.7+-0.8,and at 3.6 < z < 4.0 = 8.4+-2.9. We can place a secure lower limit for the contribution of OVI to the closure mass density at the redshifts probed here: $Ω_{OVI} (2.8 < z < 3.2) >1.9x10^{-8} h^-1. We show that the strong lines we probe account for over 65\% of the mass in the OVI absorbers; the weak absorbers, while dominant in line number density, do not contribute significantly to the mass density. Making a conservative assumption about the ionisation fraction, and adopting the Anders (1989) solar abundance values, we derive the mean metallicty of the gas probed in our search : $ζ(2.8 < z < 3.2) > 3.6 x 10^-4 h, in good agreement with other studies. These results demonstrate that large spectroscopic datasets such as SDSS can play an important role in QSO absorption line studies, in spite of the relatively low resolution.
We report the results of a systematic search for signatures of metal lines in quasar spectra of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 3(DR3), focusing on finding intervening absorbers via detection of their OVI doublet. Here we present the search algorithm, and criteria for distinguishing candidates from spurious Lyman $α${} forest lines. In addition, we compare our findings with simulations of the Lyman $α${} forest in order to estimate the detectability of OVI doublets over various redshift intervals. We have obtained a sample of 1756 OVI doublet candidates with rest-frame equival…
We have conducted a systematic survey for intervening OVI absorbers in available echelle spectra of 16 QSOs at z_QSO = 0.17-0.57. These spectra were obtained using HST/STIS with the E140M grating. Our search uncovered a total of 27 foreground OVI absorbers with rest-frame absorption equivalent width W_r(1031) > 25mA. Ten of these QSOs exhibit strong OVI absorbers in their vicinity. Our OVI survey does not require the known presence of Lya, and the echelle resolution allows us to identify the OVI absorption doublet based on their common line centroid and known flux ratio. We estimate the total …
The observed intergalactic OVI absorbers at z>0 have been regarded as a significant reservoir of the ``missing baryons''. However, to fully understand how these absorbers contribute to the baryon inventory, it is crucial to determine whether the systems are collisionally ionized or photoionized (or both). Using the identified intergalactic OVI absorbers as tracers, we search for the corresponding X-ray absorption lines, which are useful for finding the missing baryons and for revealing the nature of the OVI absorbers. Stacking the Chandra grating spectra along six AGN sight lines, we obtain th…
(Abridged) With the goal of investigating the nature of OVI absorbers at high redshifts, we study the effects of proximity to the background quasar. In a sample of sixteen quasars at z(QSO) between 2.14 and 2.87 observed at 6.6 km/s resolution with VLT/UVES, we detect 35 OVI absorption-line systems lying within 8000 km/s of z(QSO). The systems can be categorized into 9 strong and 26 weak OVI absorbers. The strong absorbers are defined by the presence of either broad, fully saturated OVI absorption or partial coverage of the continuum source, and have log N(OVI)>~15.0; these systems are intrins…
We report the Chandra detection of OVII Kαabsorption at z=0 in the direction of the z=0.03 Seyfert 1 galaxy Mkn 279. The high velocity cloud Complex C lies along this line of sight, with HI 21-cm emission and OVI 1032Åabsorption both observed at velocities of ~ -150 km/s relative to the local standard of rest. We present an improved method for placing limits on the Doppler parameter and column density of a medium when only one unresolved line can be measured; this method is applied to the OVII absorption seen here, indicating that the OVII Doppler parameter is inconsistent with that of any low…
We report the results of a survey of OVI 1032 absorption along the lines of sight to 25 white dwarfs in the local interstellar medium (LISM) obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). We find that interstellar OVI absorption along all sightlines is generally weak, and in a number of cases, completely absent. No OVI absorption was detected with significance greater than 2 sigma for 12 of the 25 stars, where the 1 sigma uncertainty is 4 mA, equivalent to an OVI column density of ~3 x 10^12 cm^-2. Of the remaining stars, most have column densities N(OVI) < 10^13 cm^-2 and no…
We present a high resolution (R~500) X-ray spectrum of the bright quasar H1821+643 (z=0.297), obtained in a 470 ksec Chandra observation. We search for X-ray absorption by highly ionized metal species, OVII and OVIII in particular, at the redshifts of the six intervening OVI absorption systems known from UV studies. We detect features with >~2-sigma significance at the predicted OVII and OVIII wavelengths of one OVI system, at the OVII wavelength of a second, and at the NeIX wavelength of a third. We find two additional features of comparable strength (one OVII and one OVIII) within 1000 km/s …
Intergalactic absorbers along lines of sight to distant quasars are a powerful diagnostic for the evolution and content of the intergalactic medium (IGM). In this study, we use the FUSE satellite to search 129 known lya absorption systems at z<0.15 toward 31 AGN for corresponding absorption from higher Lyman lines and the important metal ions OVI. We detect OVI in 40 systems over a smaller range of column density than seen in HI. The co-existence of OVI and HI suggests a multiphase IGM, with warm photoionized and hot ionized components. With improved OVI detection statistics, we find a steep d…
We outline the results from a FUSE Team program designed to characterize OVI absorption in the disk of the Milky Way. We find that OVI absorption occurs throughout most of the Galactic plane, at least out to several kpc from the Sun, and that it is distributed smoothly enough for the column density to decline with height above the disk and with distance in the plane. However, the OVI absorbing gas is clumpy, and moves at peculiar velocities relative to that expected from Galactic rotation. We conclude that the observed absorption is likely to be a direct indicator of the structures formed when…
We present results of the first survey of high-redshift (<z> ~ 2.3) OVI absorption systems along parallel lines of sight toward two lensed QSOs. After a careful and well-defined search, we find ten intervening OVI systems. Within the errors, all OVI systems appear at the same redshift and have similar line strengths in front of both QSO images, whereas in most cases CIV or SiIV show more differences across the lines of sight, either in radial velocity or line strength. We conclude that (1) the coherence length of OVI must be much larger than ~ 1 kpc, and (2) an important fraction of the CIV ab…
We present FUSE observations of OVI absorption in a sample of 100 extragalactic targets and 2 distant halo stars. We describe the details of the calibration, alignment in velocity, continuum fitting, and manner in which contaminants were removed (Galactic H2, absorption intrinsic to the background target and intergalactic Ly-beta lines). We searched for OVI absorption in the velocity range -1200 to 1200 km/s. With a few exceptions, we only find OVI between -400 and 400 km/s; the exceptions may be intergalactic OVI. We discuss the separation of the observed OVI absorption into components associ…
We combine a FUSE sample of OVI absorbers (z < 0.15) with a database of 1.07 million galaxy redshifts to explore the relationship between absorbers and galaxy environments. All 37 absorbers with N(OVI) > 10^{13.2} cm^-2 lie within 800 h_70^-1 kpc of the nearest galaxy, with no compelling evidence for OVI absorbers in voids. The OVI absorbers often appear to be associated with environments of individual galaxies. Gas with 10 +/- 5% of solar metallicity (OVI and CIII) has a median spread in distance of 350-500 kpc around L* galaxies and 200-270 kpc around 0.1 L* galaxies (ranges reflect uncertai…
We present the results of a 4 day ASCA observation of the Seyfert galaxy MCG-6-30-15, focussing on the nature of the X-ray absorption by the warm absorber, characterizd by the K-edges of the intermediately ionized oxygen, OVII and OVIII. We confirm that the column density of OVIII changes on a timescale of $\sim 10^4$~s when the X-ray continuum flux decreases. The significant anti-correlation of column density with continuum flux gives direct evidence that the warm absorber is photoionized by the X-ray continuum. From the timescale of the variation of the OVIII column density, we estimate that…
X-ray absorption lines of highly-ionized species such as OVII at about zero redshift have been firmly detected in the spectra of several active galactic nuclei. However, the location of the absorbing gas remains a subject of debate. To separate the Galactic and extragalactic contributions to the absorption, we have obtained Chandra LETG-HRC and FUSE observations of the black hole X-ray binary LMC X--3. A joint analysis of the detected OVII and Ne IX Kalpha lines, together with the non-detection of the OVII Kbeta and OVIII Kalpha lines, gives the measurements of the temperature, velocity disper…
Intergalactic absorbers along lines of sight to distant quasars are a powerful diagnostic for the evolution and content of the IGM. In this study, we search known low-z Ly-alpha absorption systems for equivalent absorption in higher Lyman lines as well as the important metal ions OVI and CIII. OVI absorption is detected roughly half the time and shows a smaller range of column density than HI. This implies a multi-phase IGM with warm neutral and hot ionized components. We use our OVI detection statistics to determine that the fraction of intergalalctic mass at 10^5-10^6 K is at least 5% of the…
Using a hydrodynamic simulation of a LCDM universe, we investigate the "X-ray forest" absorption imprinted on the spectra of background quasars by the intervening intergalactic medium (IGM). In agreement with previous studies, we find that OVII and OVIII produce the strongest absorption features. The strong oxygen absorbers that might be detectable with Chandra or XMM-Newton arise in gas with T ~ 10^6 K and overdensities delta >~ 100 that are characteristic of galaxy groups. Future X-ray missions could detect weaker oxygen absorption produced by gas with a wider range of temperatures and the l…
We report the detection of highly-ionized gas at z~0 seen in resonant UV and X-ray absorption lines toward the z=0.03 blazar Mkn 421. A total of 13 X-ray and 3 UV lines were measured (or upper limits derived), including three lines in the OVII K-series and Kαtransitions from neon, carbon, and nitrogen. From the three OVII lines we derive a 2σDoppler parameter constraint of 24<b<55 km/s. The FUSE spectrum shows strong Galactic low--velocity OVI 1032A absorption as well as a possible weak OVI high-velocity component (HVC). The Doppler parameter of the low-velocity OVI measured with FUSE is ~3σhi…
With a column density log N(OVI) = 14.95+/-0.05, the OVI absorber at z_abs~0.2028 observed toward the QSO PKS0312-77 (z_em=0.223) is the strongest yet detected at z<0.5. At nearly identical redshift (z_abs=0.2026), we also identify a Lyman limit system (LLS, log N(HI)=18.22). Combining FUV and NUV spectra of PKS0312-77 with optical observations of galaxies in the surrounding field (15'x32'), we present an analysis of these absorbers and their connection to galaxies. The observed OI/HI ratio and photoionization modelling of other low ions indicate the metallicity of the LLS is [Z/H]_LLS=-0.6 an…
We search for OVI absorption in a Keck HIRES spectrum of the z=3.62 quasar Q1422+231. Comparison of CIV measurements to cosmological simulations shows that \lya forest absorbers with N_HI > 10^{14.5} have [C/H]~=-2.5, for the UV background spectrum of Haardt & Madau (HM). Lower column density absorption arises in lower density gas, where OVI is the most sensitive metal tracer. Since OVI lines lie at wavelengths contaminated by Lyman series absorption, we interpret our Q1422 results by comparing to artificial spectra drawn from an SPH simulation of a Lambda-dominated CDM model. A search for dee…
We report the first detection of an OVIII Ly-alpha absorption line associated with an overdense region in the intergalactic medium (IGM) along the sightline towards PKS 2155-304 with the Chandra Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS). The absorption line is detected at 4.5 sigma level with cz~16,600 km/s. At the same velocity Shull et al.(1998) detected a small group of spiral galaxies (with an overdensity of delta_gal ~ 100) and low metallicity HI Ly-alpha clouds. We constrain the intragroup gas that gives rise to the OVIII Ly-alpha line to a baryon density in the range 1e-5 < n…
We report on the multiphase absorption-line system detected at a redshift z = 3.021 in the spectrum of the quasi-stellar object CTQ 325 (z_em = 3.212). The system is displaced by ~14,000 km/s to the blue of the systemic velocity defined by the center of the symmetric OI quasar emission line. It consists of shallow and broad (~700 km/s, FWHM) absorption lines of HI 1215, CIV 1548,1550, and OVI 1032,1038, produced by collisionally ionized gas and of narrow absorption lines (FWHM < 20 km/s) of Ly-alpha, Ly-beta, ..., Ly-6, SiIII 1206, and CIII 977 produced by photoionized gas. Possible origins of…
We present the results of a large survey of HI, OVI, and CIII absorption lines in the low-redshift (z<0.3) intergalactic medium (IGM). We begin with 171 strong Lyalpha absorption lines (W>80 mA) in 31 AGN sight lines studied with the Hubble Space Telescope and measure corresponding absorption from higher-order Lyman lines with FUSE. Higher-order Lyman lines are used to determine N_HI and b_HI accurately through a curve-of-growth (COG) analysis. We find that the number of HI absorbers per column density bin is a power-law distribution, dN/dN_HI=N^-beta, with beta_HI=1.68+-0.11. We made 40 detec…
We investigate the existence of a metal-rich OVI population in 10 high spectral resolution quasar spectra and define observational criteria for this class of absorbers. The low temperatures of nearly half of all OVI absorbers (redshifts 2.0 to 2.6), implied by their line widths, are too low for collisional ionization to be a dominant process. We estimate the oxygen abundance under the assumption of photoionization; a striking result is the bimodal distribution of [O/H] with median values close to 0.01 (0.5) solar for the metal-poor (metal-rich) populations. We present the first estimate of the…
With the Chandra X-ray Telescope we have detected a zero-redshift OVII He-alpha absorption line along the sight line toward 3C 273. This line detection is highly significant, with a signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of 6.4. We explore two models, which associate this line with (1) the intragroup gas in the Local Group, and (2) the hot halo gas in the vicinity of our Milky Way. In the first model, we find that for a standard beta-model of the gas distribution in the Local Group, the temperature is constrained to 2.3e5 < T < 1.2e6 K and the baryon overdensity is delta_b ~ 100; both results are consist…
The X-ray bright z=0.116 quasar PKS 2155-304 is frequently observed as a Chandra calibration source, with a total of 483 ksec of Low Energy Transmission Grating (LETG) exposure time accumulated through May 2006. Highly-ionized metal absorption lines, including numerous lines at z=0 and a putative OVIII K-alpha line at z=0.055, have been reported in past Chandra studies of this source. Using all available Chandra LETG spectra and analysis techniques developed for such z=0 X-ray absorption along other sightlines, we revisit these previous detections. We detect 4 absorption lines at >3σsignifican…
We present HST and FUSE observations of the intergalactic absorption toward PG1116+215 in the 900-3000 A spectral region. We detect 25 Ly-alpha absorbers at rest-frame equivalent widths W_r > 30 mA, yielding (dN/dz)_Ly-alpha = 154+/-18 over an unblocked redshift path of 0.162. Two additional weak Ly-alpha absorbers with W_r ~ 15-20 mA are also present. Eight of the Ly-alpha absorbers have large line widths (b > 40 km/sec). The detection of narrow OVI in the broad Ly-alpha absorber at z=0.06244 supports the idea that the Ly-alpha profile is thermally broadened in gas with T > 10^5 K. We find dN…
We conduct an ultraviolet (HST and FUSE) spectroscopic survey of HI (Lyman lines) and seven metal ions (OVI, NV, CIV, CIII, SiIV, SiIII, FeIII) in the low-redshift intergalactic medium (IGM) at z<0.4. We analyzed 650 Lya absorbers over redshift pathlength Delta z=5.27, detecting numerous absorbers: 83 OVI systems, 39 CIII, 53 SiIII, 24 CIV, 24 NV, and so on. Our survey yields distributions in column density and estimates of the IGM baryon content and metallicities of C, N, O in the IGM. In the low-z IGM, we have accounted for ~40% of the baryons: 30% in the photoionized Lya forest and 10% in t…
The Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) has observed over three hundred fifty sightlines to extragalactic targets. About one hundred fifty of these are of sufficient quality to measure OVI absorption in and near the Milky Way. High-velocity OVI absorption is detected in about 80% of the sightlines, with the detection rate going up for sightlines with higher signal-to-noise ratios. OVI is almost always seen in directions with previously known HI HVCs, including HVCs complex C, complex A, complex WD, the Magellanic Stream, and the Outer Arm. Studies of several sightlines through comple…
To probe the distribution and physical characteristics of interstellar gas at temperatures T ~ 3e5 K in the disk of the Milky Way, we have used the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) to observe absorption lines of OVI toward 148 early-type stars situated at distances 1 kpc. After subtracting off a mild excess of OVI arising from the Local Bubble, combining our new results with earlier surveys of OVI, and eliminating stars that show conspicuous localized X-ray emission, we find an average OVI mid-plane density n_0 = 1.3e-8 cm^-3. The density decreases away from the plane of the Galax…
Artificial absorption spectra are used to test a variety of instrumental and physical effects on the pixel correlation technique for the detection of weak OVI absorption. At HI optical depths <= 0.3-1, the apparent OVI detections are spurious coincidences due to HI absorption at other redshifts. In this range, the apparent OVI optical depth is independent of HI optical depth. At larger HI optical depths, apparent OVI optical depth and HI optical depth are correlated. Detailed modelling is required in order to interpret the significance of this relation. High-resolution spectra of four QSOs tog…
The environment of high-redshift galaxies is characterized by both wind-driven outflowing gas and gravitationally infalling streams. To investigate such galaxy-IGM interplay we have generated synthetic optical absorption line spectra piercing the volume surrounding a starbursting analog of a Lyman Break Galaxy selected in a $z \approx 3$ output from a SPH simulation, including a detailed treatment of mechanical feedback from winds. Distributions for several observable species (HI, CIII, CIV, SiII, SiIII, SiIV, OVI, OVII, and OVIII) have been derived by post-processing the simulation outputs. T…
Recent FUSE and STIS observations of OVI absorption at low redshift along the sightline to distant quasars have been interpreted as the signature of a warm-hot diffuse component of the intergalactic medium (IGM). In these proceedings we show that the predicted numbers of such absorbers in numerical simulations agree with the observed characteristics, lending support to this idea. We find that collisionally ionized lines tend to be stronger and wider, while photo-ionized absorbers are weaker and narrower. We also find that a comparison of the predicted distribution of line widths to that observ…
We present a detailed analysis of the intergalactic metal-line absorption systems in the archival HST/STIS and FUSE ultraviolet spectra of the low-redshift quasar PKS1302-102 (z_QSO = 0.2784). We supplement the archive data with CLOUDY ionization models and a survey of galaxies in the quasar field. There are 15 strong Lya absorbers with column densities logN_HI > 14. Of these, six are associated with at least CIII 977 absorption (logN(C^++) > 13); this implies a redshift density dN_CIII/dz = 36+13/-9 (68% confidence limits) for the five detections with rest equivalent width W_r > 50 mA. Two sy…
We present the results of a long (~93 ksec) XMM-Newton observation of the bright BL-Lac object PKS 0548-322 (z=0.069). Our Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) spectrum shows a single absorption feature at an observed wavelength lambda=23.33 A, which we interpret as OVI Ka absorption at z=0.058, i.e., ~3000 km/s from the background object. The observed equivalent width of the absorption line ~30 mA, coupled with the lack of the corresponding absorption edge in the EPIC pn data, implies an OVI column density ~ 2 10^{16} cm-2 and turbulence with a Doppler velocity parameter b>100 km/s. Within t…
Recent STIS and FUSE observations have detected OVI absorption lines at low redshift that are not clearly associated with any galactic system. In this paper, we argue that these lines are due to metal enriched hot gas in the intergalactic medium. Using numerical simulations of a cosmological-constant dominated cosmology, combined with reasonable assumptions about the metallicity distribution, we show that the number density and internal characteristics of these lines are correctly predicted. We find that the OVI is primarily produced by collisional ionization from gas at a few times 10^5 K for…
We use FUSE and STIS spectra to study intergalactic absorption towards the quasar PG1259+593 (z=0.478). We identify 135 intergalactic absorption lines with equivalent widths >10mA, tracing 78 absorption components in 72 Ly alpha/beta absorption-line systems. We concentrate on the distribution and physical properties of the WHIM as sampled by OVI and intrinsically broad Ly alpha lines. The number of intervening OVI absorbers for equivalent widths W>24 mA is 3-6 over an unobscured redshift path of dz=0.368. This implies a number density of OVI systems, dN/dz, of ~8-16 along this sight line. This…
We describe a survey for OVI absorption in the spectra of 5 high redshift quasars (2.2 < z < 2.8). We identify 12 cosmological systems, and 6 systems that are either ejected from the background QSO or affected by its local radiation field. Almost all of the intergalactic OVI is associated with strong Ly-a absorption (N_HI > 10^15.2 cm^-2), as well as absorption from CIV and often lower ionization species. The absorbing regions are conservatively constrained to have L<=200 kpc and rho/rho_bar >= 2.5, with actual values probably closer to L ~ 60 kpc and rho/rho_bar ~ 10-30. They also have two di…
We present a survey of OVI 1032 emission in the Milky Way using data from the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) satellite. The observations span the period from launch in 1999 to July 2003. Our survey contains 112 sight lines, 23 of which show measurable OVI 1032 emission. The OVI 1032 emission feature was detected at all latitudes and exhibits intensities of 1900-8600 photons/s/cm^2/sr. Combined with values from the literature, these emission measurements are consistent with the picture derived from recent OVI absorption surveys: high-latitude sight lines probe OVI-emitting gas in…
NGC 5548 was observed by BeppoSAX in a single long (8 day) observation from 0.2 to 200 keV. We find (1) the spectral variation of the source is produced by a change of the intrinsic power law slope; (2) a high energy cut-off at $E_c= 115^{+39}_{-27}$ keV with a hint of change of $E_c$ with flux; (3) OVII and OVIII absorption K edges, and a possible blended OVII-OVIII K$α,β$ emission feature at $0.54^{+0.07}_{-0.06}$ keV, inconsistent with a purely photoionized gas in equilibrium. We propose that the temperature of the absorbing and emitting gas is $\sim 10^6$ K so that both collisional ionizat…
We carry out cosmological chemodynamical simulations with different strengths of supernova (SN) feedback and study how galactic winds from star-forming galaxies affect the features of hydrogen (HI) and metal (CIV and OVI) absorption systems in the intergalactic medium at high redshift. We find that the outflows tend to escape to low density regions, and hardly affect the dense filaments visible in HI absorption. As a result, the strength of HI absorption near galaxies is not reduced by galactic winds, but even slightly increases. We also find that a lack of HI absorption for lines of sight (LO…
We report on detailed Monte Carlo inversion analysis of five OVI systems from the spectrum of the bright quasar HE 0515-4414 (z_e = 1.71). The associated system at z_a = 1.697 with the neutral hydrogen column density N(HI)= 4.4 10^{13} cm^{-2} shows pronounced absorption from highly ionized transitions of CIII, CIV, NV, OVI, SiIV, and probably SVI. We found that only a power law type ionizing spectrum (J_nu propto nu^{-1.5}) is consistent with the observed sample of the line profiles, i.e. the system is definitely intrinsic. The relative metal abundances give almost the solar pattern and the m…
We present HST/STIS and FUSE spectra of the QSO PG 1211+143 (z_em = 0.081) and a galaxy survey of the surrounding field. This sightline shows two strong intergalactic absorption systems at cz ~ 15,300 and 19,300. This sightline addresses the nature and origin of the OVI absorbers, and their connection to galaxies. We explore the relationship of these absorbers to the nearby galaxies and compare them to other OVI-bearing absorbers in diverse environments. At 15,300 km s^-1, we find four distinct HI components and associated CII, CIII, CIV, SiII, SiIII, SiIV, NV, and OVI, lying near a spiral-dom…
A hydromagnetic (MHD) wind from a clumpy molecular accretion disk is invoked to explain observations of warm absorbing (WA) gas in UVX from Sy galaxies. This paper focuses on two issues: (1) compatibility of kinematics and dynamics of MHD wind with the observed properties of WAs; and (2) relationship between the UVX absorptions. We provide an in-depth comparison between the MHD model and the Sy 1 galaxy NGC 5548, which at high spectral resolution exhibits a number of discrete UV absorption components. We find that: (1) the total column densities of Ovii, Oviii and H, are reproduced by constrai…
We report on high resolution spectra of the bright QSO HS0747+4259 (zem = 1.90, V = 15.8) observed to search for intermediate redshift OVI absorption systems. The spectra were obtained by means of the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) at the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and the High Resolution Echelle Spectrometer (HIRES) at the W. M. Keck telescope. We identify 16 OVI systems in the range 1.07 <= z <= 1.87. Among them, six systems with zabs = 1.46-1.8 exhibit a sufficient number of lines of different ionic transitions to estimate the shape of the ionizing radiation field in the rang…
The Seyfert 1 galaxy, NGC3516 has been the subject of many absorption line studies at both ultraviolet and X-ray wavelengths. In the UV, strong, broad, variable associated metal line absorption with velocity width $\sim 2000$ \kms\ is thought to originate in gas with nh larger than about $10^{19}$ cm$^{-2}$ lying between 0.01 and 9 pc from the central active nucleus. The Ginga X-ray data are consistent with several possibilities: a warm absorber and a cold absorber combined either with partial covering or an unusually strong reflection spectrum. We present ROSAT observations of NGC3516 which s…
We analyze high resolution spectra of a multi--cloud weak [defined as W_r(MgII) < 0.3 A] absorbing system along the line of sight to PG 1634+706. This system gives rise to a partial Lyman limit break and absorption in MgII, SiII, CII, SiIII, SiIV, CIV, and OVI. The lower ionization transitions arise in two kinematic subsystems with a separation of ~150 km/s. Each subsystem is resolved into several narrow components, having Doppler widths of 3-10 kms. For both subsystems, the OVI absorption arises in a separate higher ionization phase, in regions dominated by bulk motions in the range of 30-40 …
Recent ultraviolet and X-ray observations of intergalactic OVI and OVII absorption systems along lines of sight to bright quasars have opened a new window onto the ``warm-hot intergalactic medium'' (WHIM). These systems appear to provide a significant reservoir for baryons in the local universe, and comparison to cosmological simulations suggests that their abundance roughly matches theoretical predictions. Here we use analytic arguments to elucidate the physical properties of the absorbers and their role in structure formation. We first show that if the absorbers result from structure-formati…
We present an analysis of interstellar and intergalactic absorption lines in the FUSE spectrum of the low-redshift quasar PG0804+761 (z=0.100) at intermediate resolution (FWHM=25 km/s) in the direction l=138.3, b=31.0. With a good signal-to-noise ratio and the presence of several interesting Galactic and extragalactic absorption components along the sight line, this spectrum provides a good opportunity to demonstrate the ability of FUSE to do both interstellar and extragalactic science. Although the spectrum of PG0804+761 is dominated by strong absorption from local Galactic gas, we concentrat…
Million degree gas is present at near-zero redshift and is due either to a gaseous Galactic Halo or a more diffuse but very massive Local Group medium. We can discriminate between these models because the column densities should depend on location in the sky, either relative to the Galaxy bulge or to the M31-Milky Way axis. To search for these signatures, we measured the OVII Kalpha absorption line strength toward 25 bright AGNs, plus LMC X-3, using XMM-Newton RGS archival data. The data are in conflict with a purely Local Group model, but support the Galactic Halo model. The strongest correla…
We report FUSE far-UV spectroscopy of the prototypical dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 1705. These data allow us for the first time to probe the coronal-phase gas (T = 10E5 to 10E6 K) that may dominate the radiative cooling of the supernova-heated ISM and thereby determine the dynamical evolution of starburst-driven outflows. We detect a broad (100 km/s) and blueshifted (by 80 km/s) OVI absorption-line arising in the previously-known galactic outflow. The properties of the OVI absorption are inconsistent with the standard superbubble model in which this gas arises in a conductive interface inside t…
We present the first X-ray detection of resonant absorption from warm/hot local gas either in our Galaxy, or in the Intergalactic space surrounding our Galaxy, along the line of sight toward the blazar PKS 2155-304. The Chandra HRCS-LETG spectrum of this z=0.116 source clearly shows unresolved OVII(Ka) and NeIX(Ka) resonant absorption lines at 21.603 A and 13.448 A (i.e. cz = [-340--200] km/s in the rest frame, from the OVII line). OVIII(Ka) and OVII(Kb) from the same system are also detected at a lower significance level, while upper limits are set on OVIII(Kb), NeX(Ka) and NeIX(Kb). The FUSE…
We present a complete catalogue of 27 O VI absorbers at low redshift (0.12 < z < 0.5) from a blind survey of 16 QSO echelle spectra in the HST/STIS data archive. These absorbers are identified based only upon matching line profiles and the expected doublet ratio between the λλ1031, 1037 transitions. Subsequent searches are carried out to identify their associated transitions. Here we present all relevant absorption properties. By considering absorption components of different species which are well-aligned in velocity-space, we derive gas temperatures and non-thermal broadening values, b_{nt}.…
We use numerical simulations of structure formation in a Cold Dark Matter model to predict the absorption lines in the soft X-rays produced by heavy elements in the shock-heated intergalactic medium at low redshift. The simulation incorporates a model for metal production in galaxies and the subsequent dispersion of the metals to the intergalactic medium. We analyze in particular absorption lines produced by oxygen, and calculate the ionization stage taking into account the observed X-ray background at the present time. We find that oxygen is fully ionized by the X-ray background in low-densit…
We present FUSE observations toward four stars in the LMC superbubble N70 and compare these spectra to those of four comparison targets located in nearby field and diffuse regions. The N70 sight lines show OVI 1032 absorption that is consistently stronger than the comparison sight lines by ~60%. We attribute the excess column density (logN_OVI=14.03 cm^-2) to hot gas within N70, potentially the first detection of OVI associated with a superbubble. In a survey of 12 LMC sight lines, Howk et al. (2002a) concluded that there was no correlation between ISM morphology and N_OVI. We present a reanal…
We present a galaxy survey of the field surrounding PKS0405-123 performed with the WFCCD spectrometer at Las Campanas Observatory. The survey is comprised of two datasets: (1) a greater than 95% complete survey to R = 20 of the field centered on PKS0405-123 with 10' radius (L~0.1 L_* and radius of 1Mpc at z=0.1); and (2) a set of four discontiguous (i.e. non-overlapping), flanking fields covering ~1 square degree area with completeness ~90% to R=19.5mag. With these datasets, one can examine the local and large-scale galactic environment of the absorption systems identified toward PKS0405-123. …
We present a direct measurement of the metallicity distribution function for the high redshift intergalactic medium. We determine the shape of this function using survival statistics, which account for both detections and non-detections of OVI and CIV associated with HI absorption in quasar spectra. Our OVI sample probes the metal content of ~50% of all baryons at z~2.5. We find a median intergalactic abundance of [O,C/H]=-2.82; the differential abundance distribution is approximately lognormal with mean <[C,O/H]>~-2.85 and σ=0.75 dex. Some 60-70% the Lya forest lines are enriched to observabl…
To gain insight into four highly ionized high-velocity clouds (HVCs) discovered by Sembach et al. (1999), we have analyzed data from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) for the PKS 2155-304 and Mrk 509 sight lines. We measure strong absorption in OVI and column densities of multiple ionization stages of silicon (SiII/III/IV) and carbon (CII/III/IV). We interpret this ionization pattern as a multiphase medium that contains both collisionally ionized and photoionized gas. Toward PKS 2155-304, for HVCs at -140 and -270 km/s, respectively, we measure …
At low redshift, only about one-tenth of the known baryons lie in galaxies or the hot gas seen in galaxy clusters and groups. Models posit that these "missing baryons" are in gaseous form in overdense filaments that connect the much denser virialized groups and clusters. About 30% are cool (<1E5 K) and are detected in Ly alpha absorption studies, but about half is predicted to lie in the 1E5-1E7 K regime. Gas is detected in the 2-5E5 K range through OVI absorption studies (7% of the baryons) and possibly near 1E5 K from broad Ly absorption (20% of the baryons). Hotter gas (0.5-2E6 K) is detect…
We use four Chandra gratings spectra of the neutron star low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1820-30 to better understand the nature of certain X-ray absorption lines in X-ray binaries, including the NeII, NeIII, NeIX, OVII, and OVIII lines. The equivalent widths of the lines are generally consistent between the observations, as expected if these lines originate in the hot interstellar medium. No evidence was found that the lines were blueshifted, again supporting the interstellar medium origin, though this may be due to poor statistics. There is apparent variability in the OVIII Ly-alpha line equivalent…
We present far-ultraviolet spectra of the Seyfert2 galaxy Mrk533 obtained with FUSE. These spectra show narrow asymmetrical OVI 1032,1038 emission lines with stronger wings shortward of the peak wavelength, but the degree of asymmetry of these wings in velocity is much lower than that of the wings of the lines of lower ionization. In the combined OVI profile there are marginal indications of local absorptions in the outflow. The CIII 977 line is seen weakly with a similar profile, but with very low signal to noise. These FUV spectra are among the first for a Seyfert of type2, i.e., a purported…
