The Banks--Casher relation links the spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry in QCD to the presence of a non-zero density of quark modes at the low end of the spectrum of the Dirac operator. Spectral observables like the number of modes in a given energy interval are renormalizable and can therefore be computed using the Wilson formulation of lattice QCD even though the latter violates chiral symmetry at energies on the order of the inverse lattice spacing. Using numerical simulations, we find (in two-flavour QCD) that the low quark modes do condense in the expected way. In particular, the chiral condensate can be accurately calculated simply by counting the low modes on large lattices. Other spectral observables can be considered as well and have a potentially wide range of uses.
We investigate the properties of the finite-temperature QCD transition towards the chiral limit using staggered quarks. Starting from the 2+1-flavor physical point, the limit of massless quarks is approached along two different trajectories in the Columbia-plot. Unlike in previous approaches, the chiral condensate is determined via the Banks-Casher relation. The first results of our finite size scaling analysis are presented.
Eigenvalues of the Hermitian Wilson-Dirac operator are of special interest in several lattice QCD simulations, e.g., for noise reduction when evaluating all-to-all propagators. In this paper we present a Davidson-type eigensolver that utilizes the structural properties of the Hermitian Wilson-Dirac operator $Q$ to compute eigenpairs of this operator corresponding to small eigenvalues. The main idea is to exploit a synergy between the (outer) eigensolver and its (inner) iterative scheme which solves shifted linear systems. This is achieved by adapting the multigrid DD-$α$AMG algorithm to a solv…
The near-zero modes of the Dirac operator are connected to spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry in QCD (SBCS) via the Banks-Casher relation. At the same time the distribution of the near-zero modes is well described by the Random Matrix Theory (RMT) with the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE). Then it has become a standard lore that a randomness, as observed through distributions of the near-zero modes of the Dirac operator, is a consequence of SBCS. The higher-lying modes of the Dirac operator are not affected by SBCS and are sensitive to confinement physics and related $SU(2)_{CS}$ and $SU(2…

We study spontaneous chiral-symmetry breaking in SU(3) QCD in terms of the dual superconductor picture for quark confinement in the maximally Abelian (MA) gauge, using lattice QCD Monte Carlo simulations with four different lattices of $16^4$, $24^4$, $24^3\times 6$ at $β=6.0$ (i.e., the spacing $a \simeq$ 0.1 fm), and $32^4$ at $β=6.2$ (i.e., $a \simeq$ 0.075 fm), at the quenched level. First, in the confinement phase, we find Abelian dominance and monopole dominance in the MA gauge for the chiral condensate in the chiral limit, using the two different methods of i) the Banks-Casher relation w…
