The spectrum of low-lying eigenvalues of overlap Dirac operator in quenched SU(2) lattice gauge theory with tadpole-improved Symanzik action is studied at finite temperatures in the vicinity of the confinement-deconfinement phase transition defined by the expectation value of the Polyakov line. The value of the chiral condensate obtained from the Banks-Casher relation is found to drop down rapidly at T = Tc, though not going to zero. At Tc' = 1.5 Tc = 480 MeV the chiral condensate decreases rapidly one again and becomes either very small or zero. At T < Tc the distributions of small eigenvalues are universal and are well described by chiral orthogonal ensemble of random matrices. In the temperature range above Tc where both the chiral condensate and the expectation value of the Polyakov line are nonzero the distributions of small eigenvalues are not universal. Here the eigenvalue spectrum is better described by a phenomenological model of dilute instanton - anti-instanton gas.
We compare the low-lying eigenmodes of the O(a) improved Wilson-Dirac operator on quenched and dynamical configurations and investigate methods of probing the topological properties of gauge configurations
We present a quenched calculation of meson correlators with the overlap fermion at very small masses 2.6--13 MeV. In this region the pion Compton wavelength is larger than our lattice size L\simeq 1.23fm and the system is in the so-called epsilon-regime of chiral perturbation theory. We found that the scalar and pseudo-scalar correlators are precisely approximated by a few hundred low-lying fermion eigenmodes in this regime, whereas axial-vector correlator receives significant contributions from higher eigenmodes. We also measure the disconnected pseudo-scalar correlator, which is well saturat…
Using lattice QCD simulation in the quenched approximation, we study the $κ$ meson, which is ^3P_0 in the quark model, and compare experimental and other lattice data. The $κ$ is the lowest scalar meson with strangeness and constitutes the scalar nonet. The obtained mass is much higher than the recent experimental value, and therefore the $κ(800)$ is difficult to consider as a simple two-body constituent-quark structure, and may have another unconventional structure.
The QCD phase transition is studied on 32^3x8 quenched lattices. One expects from simple arguments that the quenched chiral condensate should diverge as the chiral limit is approached. Previous studies have not been able to observe this behavior, perhaps due to relatively large lattice spacings used. The topic is revisited here on N_t=8 lattices, where the physical spacing is approximately 2(Gev^-1).
We examine the chiral limit of domain wall fermions in quenched QCD. One expects that in a quenched simulation, exact fermion zero modes will give a divergent, 1/m behavior in the chiral condensate for sufficiently small valence quark masses. Unlike other fermion formulations, domain wall fermions clearly demonstrate this behavior.
In the large-volume limit $V\to\infty$ with $V << 1/m_π^4$ the mass-dependent chiral condensate is predicted to satisfy exact finite-volume scaling laws that fall into three major universality classes. We test these analytical predictions with staggered fermions and overlap fermions in gauge field sectors of fixed topological charge $ν$.
We calculate numerically the eigenvalue distribution of the overlap Dirac operator in the quenched Schwinger model on a lattice. The distribution does not fit any of the three universality classes of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking, and its strong volume dependence indicates that the chiral condensate in the quenched theory is an ill-defined and divergent quantity. When we reweight configurations with the Dirac determinant to study the theory with N_f=1, we obtain a distribution of eigenvalues that is well-behaved and consistent with the theory of explicit symmetry breaking due to the ano…
The Dirac operator describing the coupling of continuum quark fields to SU(2) center vortex world-surfaces composed of elementary squares on a hypercubic lattice is constructed. It is used to evaluate the quenched Dirac spectral density in the random vortex world-surface model, which previously has been shown to quantitatively reproduce both the confinement properties and the topological susceptibility of SU(2) Yang-Mills theory. Under certain conditions on the modeling of the vortex gauge field, a behavior of the quenched chiral condensate as a function of temperature is obtained which is con…
We confront the finite volume and small quark mass behaviour of the scalar condensate, determined numerically in quenched lattice QCD using Neuberger fermions, with predictions of quenched chiral perturbation theory. We find that quenched chiral perturbation theory describes the numerical data well, allowing us to extract the infinite volume, chiral limit scalar condensate, up to a multiplicative renormalization constant.
An exploratory study of the low-lying eigenvalues of the Wilson-Dirac operator and their corresonding eigenvectors is presented. Results for the eigenvalues from quenched and unquenched simulations are discussed. The eigenvectors are studied with respect to their localization properties in the quenched approximation for the cases of SU(2) and SU(3).
Quenched chiral perturbation theory is used to compute the first finite volume correction to the chiral condensate. The correction diverges logarithmically with the four-volume $V$. We point out that with dynamical quarks one can obtain both the chiral condensate and the pion decay constant from the distributions of the lowest Dirac operator eigenvalues.
We explore the properties of low lying eigenmodes of fermions in the quenched approximation of lattice QCD. The fermion action is a recently proposed overlap action and has exact chiral symmetry. We find that chiral zero-eigenvalue modes are localized in space and their positions correlate strongly with the locations (as defined through the density of pure gauge observables) of instantons of the appropriate charge. Nonchiral modes are also localized with peaks which are strongly correlated with the positions of both charges of instantons. These correlations slowly die away as the fermion eigen…
We present results of simulations of the quenched quarkonium spectrum at two values of the lattice spacing and for quark masses around $m_c$ using the tadpole improved clover action. Attention is focussed on the lowest lying S and P states, and the triplet fine structure is obtained for the first time using a relativistic action.
Measurements of the lowest-lying eigenvalues of the staggered fermion Dirac operator are made on ensembles of equilibrium gauge field configurations in quenched SU(3) lattice gauge theory. The results are compared with exact analytical predictions in the microscopic finite-volume scaling regime.
We have measured the valence pion mass and the valence chiral condensate on lattice configurations generated with and without dynamical fermions. We find that our data and that of others is well represented by a linear relationship between $m_π^2$ and the valence quark mass, with a non-zero intercept. For our data, we relate the intercept to finite volume effects visible in the valence chiral condensate. We see no evidence for the singular behavior expected from quenched chiral logarithms.
We study the effective monopole action obtained in the Maximal Abelian projection of quenched SU(2) lattice QCD. We determine the quadratic part of the lattice action using analytical blocking from continuum dual superconductor model to the lattice model. The leading contribution to the quadratic action depends explicitly on value of the monopole condensate. We show that the analytical monopole action matches the numerically obtained action in quenched SU(2) QCD with a good accuracy. The comparison of numerical and analytical results gives us the value of the monopole condensate in quenched SU…
We compute the low lying spectrum of the overlap Dirac operator in the deconfined phase of finite-temperature quenched gauge theory. It suggests the existence of a chiral condensate which we confirm with a direct stochastic estimate. We show that the part of the spectrum responsible for the chiral condensate can be understood as arising from a dilute gas of instantons and anti-instantons.
We determine the value of the quark condensate from quenched QCD simulations on the lattice in two ways: (i) by using the GMOR formula; (ii) by comparing the OPE prediction for the Goldstone pole contribution to the pseudoscalar vertex, at moderately large momenta. In the MSbar scheme at mu=2 GeV, from the GMOR formula we obtain <q qbar> = -(273 +/- 19 MeV)^3. We show that the value extracted from the pseudoscalar vertex, <q qbar> = - (312 +/- 24 MeV)^3, is consistent with the result obtained from the first (standard) method.
Existing non-perturbative computations of the running coupling of quenched QCD in the Schroedinger functional scheme are extended to scales mu lying much deeper in the low-energy regime. We are able to reach 1/mu ~ 0.9 fm, where a significant deviation from its perturbative evolution is observed.
The Schwinger model is used to study the artifacts of quenching in a controlled way. The model is solved on a finite-temperature cylinder of circumference $β=1/T$ with bag-inspired local boundary conditions at the two ends $x^1=0$ and $x^1=L$ which break the $γ_5$-invariance and thus play the role of a small quark mass. The quenched chiral condensate is found to diverge exponentially as $L\to\infty$, and to diverge (rather than melt as for $N_{\rm f}\geq1$) if the high-temperature limit $β\to0$ is taken at finite box-length $L$. We comment on the generalization of our results to the massive qu…
We present preliminary results for the topological charge and susceptibility determined from the low-lying eigenmodes of the Wilson-Dirac operator. These modes have been computed on dynamical configurations with Nf=2 non-perturbatively improved Wilson fermions. We compare our results with the eigenmodes of fermions in the quenched approximation.
The spectral flow of the low-lying eigenvalues of the improved and unimproved Wilson-Dirac operator is studied on instanton-like configurations and on thermalized quenched configurations at various $β$-values and lattice sizes. We also investigate the space-time localisation and chirality of the corresponding eigenvectors.
We investigate the effects of low-lying fermion modes on the QCD partition function in the epsilon-regime. With the overlap Dirac operator we calculate several tens of low-lying fermion eigenvalues on the quenched lattice. By partially incorporating the fermion determinant through the truncated determinant approximation, we calculate the partition function and other related quantities for Nf = 1 and compare them with the theoretical predictions obtained by Leutwyler and Smilga.
Exploiting Virasoro constraints on the effective finite-volume partition function, we derive generalized Leutwyler-Smilga spectral sum rules of the Dirac operator to high order. By introducing $N_v$ fermion species of equal masses, we next use the Virasoro constraints to compute two (low-mass and large-mass) expansions of the partially quenched chiral condensate through the replica method of letting $N_v \to 0$. The low-mass expansion can only be pushed to a certain finite order due to de Wit-'t Hooft poles, but the large-mass expansion can be carried through to arbitrarily high order. Results…
The recently introduced orientifold planar equivalence is a promising tool for solving non-perturbative problems in QCD. One of the predictions of orientifold planar equivalence is that the chiral condensates of a theory with $N_f$ flavours of Dirac fermions in the symmetric (or antisymmetric) representation and $N_f$ flavours of Majorana fermions in the adjoint representation have the same large $N$ value for any value of the mass of the (degenerate) fermions. Assuming the invariance of the theory under charge conjugation, we prove this statement on the lattice for staggered quenched condensa…
We compute the low-lying spectrum of the staggered Dirac operator above and below the finite temperature phase transition in both quenched QCD and in dynamical four flavor QCD. In both cases we find, in the high temperature phase, a density with close to square root behavior, $ρ(λ) \sim (λ-λ_0)^{1/2}$. In the quenched simulations we find, in addition, a volume independent tail of small eigenvalues extending down to zero. In the dynamical simulations we also find a tail, decreasing with decreasing mass, at the small end of the spectrum. However, the tail falls off quite quickly and does not see…
We present preliminary results for the mass spectrum of the nucleon and its low-lying excited states from quenched lattice QCD using the domain wall fermion method which preserves the chiral symmetry at finite lattice cutoff. Definite mass splitting is observed between the nucleon and its parity partner. This splitting grows with decreasing valence quark mass. We also present preliminary data regarding the first positive-parity excited state.
Using the SU(3)c lattice QCD with the Kogut-Susskind fermion at the quenched level, we study the quark-gluon mixed condensate g<\bar{q} sigma G q>, which is another chiral order parameter. For each current quark mass of m_q=21, 36, 52 MeV, we generate 100 gauge configurations in the 16^4 lattice with β= 6.0, and perform the measurement of the mixed condensate at 16 points in each gauge configuration. Using the 1600 data for each m_q, we find the ratio between the mixed condensate and the quark condensate, m_0^2 = g<\bar{q} sigma G q>/ <\bar{q}q> \simeq 2.5 GeV^2 at the lattice scale in the chi…
We have extended our computation of the inverse participation ratio of low-lying (asqtad) Dirac eigenvectors in quenched SU(3). The scaling dimension of the confining manifold is clearer and very near 3. We have also computed the 2-point correlator which further characterizes the localization.
We study quenched QCD just above the phase transition temperature using overlap Fermions. Exact zero modes of the overlap operator are localized. Chiral symmetry is restored, as indicated by the behavior of the chiral condensate after subtracting the effects of zero modes. The vector and pseudo-scalar screening masses are close to ideal gas values.
As a quantitative measure of localization, the inverse participation ratio of low lying Dirac eigenmodes and topological charge density is calculated on quenched lattices over a wide range of lattice spacings and volumes. Since different topological objects (instantons, vortices, monopoles, and artifacts) have different co-dimension, scaling analysis provides information on the amount of each present and their correlation with the localization of low lying eigenmodes.
We investigate the effects of low-lying fermion eigenmodes on the QCD partition function in the $ε$-regime. The fermion determinant is approximated by a truncated product of low-lying eigenvalues of the overlap-Dirac operator. With two flavors of dynamical quarks, we observe that the lattice results for the lowest eigenvalue distribution, eigenvalue sum rules and partition function reproduce the analytic predictions made by Leutwyler and Smilga, which strongly depend on the topological charge of the background gauge configuration. The value of chiral condensate extracted from these measurement…
Finite size scaling studies of monopole condensation in noncompact quenched lattice $QED$ indicate an authentic second order phase transition lying in the universality class of four dimensional percolation. Since the upper critical dimension of percolation is six, the measured critical indices are far from mean-field values. We propose a simple set of ratios as the exact critical indices for this transition. The implication of these results for critical points in Abelian gauge theories are discussed.
We study the chiral condensate, $<\barψψ>$, and various quark bilinear vertex functions for domain wall fermions at different lattice scales, with both the Wilson and DBW2 gauge actions, in both quenched and dynamical fermion simulations. We use the vertex functions to calculate renormalization factors within a non-perturbative scheme.
We study the properties of low-lying Dirac modes in quenched compact QED at $β$=0.99, 1.01 and 1.03, employing $12^3\times 12$ lattices and the overlap formalism for the fermion action. We pay special attention to the spatial distributions of the low-lying Dirac modes. Near-zero modes are found to have universal anti-correlations with monopole currents below/above the critical $β$. We also study the nearest-neighbor level spacing distribution of Dirac eigenvalues and find a signal of a Wigner-Poisson transition. We make a possible speculation on the chiral phase transition in 4D compact QED.
Recently, random matrix theory predictions for the distribution of low-lying Dirac operator eigenvalues have been extended to include lattice effects for both staggered and Wilson fermions. We computed low-lying eigenvalues for the Hermitian Wilson-Dirac operator and for improved staggered fermions on several quenched ensembles with size $\approx 1.5$ fm. Comparisons to the expectations from RMT with lattice effects included are made. Wilson RMT describes our Wilson data nicely. For improved staggered fermions we find strong indications that taste breaking effects on the low-lying spectrum dis…
We study the properties of low-lying Dirac modes in quenched compact QED at $β=1.01$, employing $12^3\times N_t$ ($N_t =4,6,8,10,12$) lattices and the overlap formalism for the fermion action. We pay attention to the spatial distributions of low-lying Dirac modes below and above the ``phase transition temperature'' $T_c$. Near-zero modes are found to have universal anti-correlations with monopole currents, and are found to lose their temporal structures above $T_c$ exhibiting stronger spatial localization properties. We also study the nearest-neighbor level spacing distribution of Dirac eigenv…
We determine several quantities in quenched lattice QCD with exact chiral symmetry. For 100 gauge configurations generated with Wilson gauge action at $ β= 6.0 $ on the $ 16^3 \times 32 $ lattice, we compute quenched quark propagators for 13 bare quark masses. The pion decay constant is extracted from the pion propagator, and from which the inverse lattice spacing is determined to be $ a^{-1} = 1.979(6) $ GeV. The parameters ($ C, δ, B $) in the pseudoscalar meson mass formula in quenched chiral perturbation theory (q$χ$PT) to one-loop order are determined. Further, we measure the index (topol…
We present results of a quenched QCD simulation with overlap fermions on a lattice of volume V = 16^3X32 at beta=6.0, which corresponds approximatively to a lattice cutoff of 2 GeV and an extension of 1.4 fm. From the two-point correlation functions of bilinear operators we extract the pseudoscalar meson masses and the corresponding decay constants. From the GMOR relation we determine the chiral condensate and, by using the K-meson mass as experimental input, we compute the sum of the strange and average up-down quark masses (m_s + \hat m). The needed logarithmic divergent renormalization cons…
We study, by numerical simulations on a lattice, the behaviour of the gauge-invariant nonlocal quark condensates in the QCD vacuum both in the quenched approximation and with four flavours of dynamical staggered fermions. The correlation length of the condensate is determined to be roughly twice as big as in the case of the gluon field strength correlators.
We study, by numerical simulations on a lattice, the behaviour of the gauge-invariant quark-antiquark nonlocal condensates in the QCD vacuum with dynamical fermions. A determination is also done in the quenched approximation and the results are compared with the full-QCD case. The fermionic correlation length is extracted and compared with the analogous gluonic quantity.
The early idea that a non-perturbative gluon condensate affects the spectrum of heavy quarks is revisited in the light of modern simulation techniques. We evaluate the low lying spectrum of bound states of two heavy quarks for large hypothetical quark mass, m_Q > m_b, using non-relativistic QCD and compare with other models to test the consistency.
We investigate the mass spectrum of the pentaquark baryon ($ udud \bar s $) in quenched lattice QCD with exact chiral symmetry. Using 3 different interpolating operators, we measure their $ 3 \times 3 $ correlation matrix and obtain the eigenvalues $ A^{\pm} (t) $ with $ \pm $ parity, for 100 gauge configurations generated with Wilson gauge action at $ β= 6.1 $ on the $ 20^3 \times 40 $ lattice. For the lowest-lying $ J^P = 1/2^- $ state, its effective mass is almost identical to that of the KN s-wave, while for the lowest-lying $ J^P = 1/2^+ $ state, its effective mass is smaller than that of…
We analyze the mass dependence of the chiral condensate for QCD at nonzero $θ$-angle and find that in general the discontinuity of the chiral condensate is not on the support of the Dirac spectrum. To understand this behavior we decompose the spectral density and the chiral condensate into contributions from the zero modes, the quenched part, and a remainder which is sensitive to the fermion determinant and is referred to as the dynamical part. We obtain general formulas for the contributions of the zero modes. Expressions for the quenched part, valid for an arbitrary number of flavors, and fo…
Using the eigenmodes of the overlap-Dirac operator, we study the topological structure of the QCD vacuum. We investigate the space-time profile of the low-lying eigenmodes and their contribution to the vacuum action density and chiral condensate under the existence of static color sources. We demonstrate that the low-lying Dirac eigenmode shows the flux-tube structure, which suggests the relevance to confinement. We also analyze the chiral condensate in the flux-tube. Chiral symmetry is partially restored inside the flux, and the reduction of the condensate is about 20% at the center of the tu…
We study negative-parity baryon spectra in quenched anisotropic lattice QCD. The negative-parity baryons are measured as the parity partner of the ground-state baryons. In addition to the flavor octet and decuplet baryons, we pay much attention to the flavor-singlet negative-parity baryon as a three-quark state and compare it with the Lambda(1405) baryon. Numerical results of the flavor octet and decuplet negative-parity baryon masses are close to experimental values of lowest-lying negative-parity baryons, while the flavor-singlet baryon is much heavier than Lambda(1405). This indicates that …
We study spin $\frac12$ hadronic states in quenched lattice QCD to search for a possible $S=+1$ pentaquark resonance. Our work is the first systematic lattice QCD study which properly carries out the following analyses: {\it (1) the careful extraction of the first two low energy states with very high statistics and the variational method} and {\it (2) the study of volume dependences of eigenenergies and spectral weights to distinguish resonance states from scattering states}. Simulations are carried out on $8^3\times 24$, $10^3\times 24$, $12^3\times 24$ and $16^3\times 24$ lattices at $β$=5.7…
We investigate the contribution of instantons to the eigenvalue spectrum of the Dirac operator in quenched QCD. The instanton configurations that we use have been derived, elsewhere, from cooled SU(3) lattice gauge fields and, for comparison, we also analyse a random `gas' of instantons. Using a set of simplifying approximations, we find a non-zero chiral condensate. However we also find that the spectral density diverges for small eigenvalues, so that the chiral condensate, at zero quark mass, diverges in quenched QCD. The degree of divergence decreases with the instanton density, so that it …
I describe a recent calculation (by me, Hoffmann, Liu, and Schaefer) of the chiral condensate in one-flavor QCD using numerical simulations with overlap fermions. The condensate is extracted by fitting the distribution of low lying eigenmodes of the Dirac operator in sectors of fixed topological charge to the predictions of Random Matrix Theory. Our results are in excellent agreement with estimates from the orientifold large-N expansion. Much interesting physics surrounds this calculation, which I will highlight.
We present the first direct evidence that quenched QCD differs from full QCD in the chiral ($m_q \rightarrow 0$) limit, as predicted by chiral perturbation theory, from our quenched lattice QCD simulations at $β= 6/g^2 = 6.0$. We measured the spectrum of light hadrons on $16^3 \times 64$, $24^3 \times 64$ and $32^3 \times 64$, using staggered quarks of masses $m_q=0.01$, $m_q=0.005$ and $m_q=0.0025$. The pion masses showed clear evidence for logarithmic violations of the PCAC relation $m_π^2 \propto m_q$, as predicted by quenched chiral perturbation theory. The dependence on spatial lattice vo…
This talk presents some results relevant for lattice QCD at higher order in ChPT. First we discuss the finite volume corrections at two loops for the quark condensate as well as a Lüscherlike finite volume formula for it. The latter allows for an alternative determination of meson sigma terms. The second set of results presented here are the calculations at two loops in partially quenched chiral perturbation theory of masses and decay constants of the charged mesons. We present results for all relevant quark mass combinations for the cases with two and three sea quarks.
We present results of a high-statistics study of scalar and pseudoscalar meson propagators in quenched QCD at two values of lattice spacing, beta = 5.7 and 5.9, with clover-improved Wilson fermions. The study of the chiral limit is facilitated by the pole-shifting ansatz of the modified quenched approximation. Pseudoscalar masses and decay constants are determined as a function of quark mass and quenched chiral log effects are estimated. A study of the flavor singlet eta prime hairpin diagram yields a precise determination of the eta prime mass insertion. The corresponding value of the quenche…
The mass spectrum of the lowest lying octet baryons is calculated to next-to-next-to-leading order in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory and partially quenched heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. We work in the isospin limit and treat the decuplet baryons as dynamical fields. These results are necessary for extrapolating QCD and partially quenched QCD lattice simulations of the octet baryon masses.
We investigate the ground state energies of vector $ρ^{\pm}$ and $K^{\pm *}$ mesons depending on the magnetic field value in the $SU(3)$ lattice gauge theory. It has been shown that the energy of a vector particle depends on its spin projection on the field axis. The magnetic dipole polarizability and hyperpolarizabilities give significant contributions to the energy value which prevents the formation of the charged vector meson condensate at high magnetic fields. We calculate the g-factor of $ρ^{\pm}$ and $K^{\pm*}$ mesons and the dipole magnetic polarizability of $ρ^{\pm}$ mesons.
The spectrum of the overlap Dirac operator in the deconfined phase of quenched gauge theory is known to have three parts: exact zeros arising from topology, small nonzero eigenvalues that result in a non-zero chiral condensate, and the dense bulk of the spectrum, which is separated from the small eigenvalues by a gap. In this paper, we focus on the small nonzero eigenvalues in an SU(2) gauge field background at $β=2.4$ and $N_T=4$. This low-lying spectrum is computed on four different spatial lattices ($12^3$, $14^3$, $16^3$, and $18^3$). As the volume increases, the small eigenvalues become i…
Infrared features of the ghost propagator of color diagonal and color antisymmetric ghost propagator of quenched SU(2) and quenched SU(3) are compared with those of unquenched Kogut-Susskind fermion SU(3) lattice Landau gauge. We compare 1) the fluctuation of the ghost propagator, 2) the ghost condensate parameter $v$ of the local composite operator (LCO) approach and 3) the Binder cumulant of color anti-symmetric ghost propagator between quenched and unquenched configurations.
We confront exact analytical predictions for the finite-volume scaling of the chiral condensate with data from quenched lattice gauge theory simulations. Using staggered fermions in both the fundamental and adjoint representations, and gauge groups SU(2) and SU(3), we are able to test simultaneously all of the three chiral universality classes. With overlap fermions we also test the predictions for gauge field sectors of non-zero topological charge. Excellent agreement is found in most cases, and the deviations are understood in the others.
