In this paper, we present different proofs of very recent results on the necessary as well as sufficient conditions on the decrease of the potential at infinity for the validity of effective range formulas in 3-D in low energy potential scattering (André Martin, private communication, to appear. See Theorem 1 below). Our proofs are based on compact formulas for the phase-shifts. The sufficiency conditions are well-known since long. But the necessity of the same conditions for potentials keeping a constant sign at large distances are new. All these conditions are established here for dimension 3 and for all angular momenta $\ell \geq 0$.
We consider scattering matrix for Schrödinger-type operators on $\mathbb{R}^d$ with perturbation $V(x)=O(\langle x\rangle^{-1})$ as $|x|\to\infty$. We show that the scattering matrix (with time-independent modifiers) is a pseudodifferential operator, and analyze its spectrum. We present examples of which the spectrum of the scattering matrices have dense point spectrum, and absolutely continuous spectrum, respectively.
The purpose of this paper is to prove some results about quantum mechanical black box scattering in even dimensions $d \geq 2$. We study the scattering matrix and prove some identities which hold for its meromorphic continuation onto $Λ$, the Riemann surface of the logarithm function. We relate the multiplicities of the poles of the continued scattering matrix to the multiplicities of the poles of the resolvent. Moreover, we show that the poles of the scattering matrix on the $m$th sheet of $Λ$ are related to the zeros of a scalar function defined on the physical sheet. This paper contains a n…
We prove the equivalence between two explicit expressions for two-point Witten-Kontsevich correlators obtained by M. Bertola, B. Dubrovin, D. Yang and by P. Zograf.
The description of bumps in scattering cross-sections by Breit-Wigner amplitudes led in the framework of the mathematical Physics to its formulation as the so-called Resonance-Decay Problem. It consists of a spectraltheoretical component and the connection of this component with the construction of decaying states. First the note quotes a solution for scattering systems, where the absolutely continuous parts of the Hamiltonians are semi-bounded and the scattering matrix is holomorphic in the upper half plane. This result uses the approach developed by Lax and Phillips, where the energy scale i…
We prove an analog of Krein's resolvent formula expressing the resolvents of self-adjoint extensions in terms of boundary conditions. Applications to quantum graphs and systems with point interactions are discussed.
We discuss the validity of a formula concerning a relation between functionals in quantum resonance scattering, which is often used in the current literature.
We consider quantum and acoustic wave propagation at fixed frequency for compactly supported scatterers in dimension $d\ge 2$. In these framework we give explicit formulas for phase recovering from appropriate phaseless scattering data. As a corollary, we give global uniqueness results for quantum and acoustic inverse scattering at fixed frequency without phase information.
In previous works, we used a so-called deformation formula in order to study, in particular, the Borel summability of the heat kernel of some operators. A goal of this paper is to collect miscellaneous remarks related to these works. Here the complex setting plays an important role. Moreover, the deformation formula provides a solution of the heat equation in "unusual" cases. We also give a uniqueness statement concerning these cases.
We consider phaseless inverse scattering for the Schrödinger equation with compactly supported potential in dimension $d\ge 2$. We give explicit formulas for solving this problem from appropriate data at high energies. As a corollary, we give also a global uniqueness result for this problem with appropriate data on a fixed energy neighborhood.
The paper contains the Weyl formula for the counting function of the interior transmission problem when the latter is parameter-elliptic. Branching billiard trajectories are constructed, and the second term of the Weyl asymptotics is estimated from above under some conditions on the set of periodic billiard trajectories.
There has been devoted significant mathematical research to model the light propagation in tissue and to recover the absorption and scattering coefficients after photoacoustic inversion. Typically, the basic light propagation models considered there are the diffusion limits of the radiative heat transfer model. These equations are well suited for models where the elastic scattering is the dominant effect. If, however, the scattering is less pronounced, a single scattering approximation model is practicable. As we show in this paper, this approach is practically relevant in focused/sectional ph…
We indicate some formulas connecting Ricci flow and the Perelman entropy functional to Fisher information, differential entropy, and the quantum potential.
The inverse scattering problem of the reconstruction of the unknown potential with compact support in the 3-d Schrödinger equation is considered. Only the modulus of the scattering complex valued wave field is known, whereas the phase is unknown. It is shown that the unknown potential can be reconstructed via the inverse Radon transform. Therefore, a long standing problem posed in 1977 by K. Chadan and P.C. Sabatier in their book "Inverse Problems in Quantum Scattering Theory" is solved.
We study quantum field models in indefinite metric. We introduce the modified Wightman axioms of Morchio and Strocchi as a general framework of indefinite metric quantum field theory (QFT) and present concrete interacting relativistic models obtained by analytical continuation from some stochastic processes with Euclidean invariance. As a first step towards scattering theory in indefinite metric QFT, we give a proof of the spectral condition on the translation group for the relativistic models.
In this paper we prove for rank one perturbations that negative two times reciprocal of the imaginary part of resonance point is equal to the rate of change of the scattering phase as a function of the coupling constant, where the coupling constant is equal to the real part of the resonance point. This equality is in agreement with Breit-Wigner formula from quantum scattering theory. For general relatively trace class perturbations, we also give a formula for the spectral shift function in terms of resonance points, non-real and real.
The purpose of this note is to give a mathematical explanation of a formula for the scattering matrix for a manifold with infinite cylindrical ends or a waveguide. This formula, which is well known in the physics literature, is sometimes referred to as the Mahaux-Weidenmüller formula. We show that a version of this formula given below gives the standard scattering matrix used in the mathematics literature. We also show that the finite rank approximation of the interaction matrix gives an approximation of the scattering matrix with errors inversely proportional to a fixed dimension-dependent po…
Given an unbalanced open quantum graph, we derive a formula relating sums over its scattering resonances with integrals outside a strip. We deduce lower bounds on the number of resonances (in bounded regions of the complex plane),that are independent of the size of the graph. We also deduce partial results indicating that Benjamini-Schramm convergence of open quantum graphs should imply convergence of the empirical spectral measures.
We consider, in quantum scattering theory, symmetrised time delay defined in terms of sojourn times in arbitrary spatial regions symmetric with respect to the origin. For potentials decaying more rapidly than $|x|^{-4}$ at infinity, we show the existence of symmetrised time delay, and prove that it satisfies an anisotropic version of Lavine's formula. The importance of an anisotropic dilations-type operator is revealed in our study.
We consider scattering theory of the Laplace Beltrami operator on differential forms on a Riemannian manifold that is Euclidean near infinity. Allowing for compact boundaries of low regularity we prove a Birman-Krein formula on the space of co-closed differential forms. In the case of dimension three this reduces to a Birman-Krein formula in Maxwell scattering.
We revise the operator-norm convergence of the Trotter product formula for a pair {A,B} of generators of semigroups on a Banach space. Operator-norm convergence holds true if the dominating operator A generates a holomorphic contraction semigroup and B is a A-infinitesimally small generator of a contraction semigroup, in particular, if B is a bounded operator. Inspired by studies of evolution semigroups it is shown in the present paper that the operator-norm convergence generally fails even for bounded operators B if A is not a holomorphic generator. Moreover, it is shown that operator norm co…
We present a systematic formulation of scattering theory for nonlinear interactions in one dimension and develop a nonlinear generalization of the transfer matrix that has a composition property similar to its linear analog's. We offer alternative characterizations of spectral singularities, unidirectional reflectionlessness and invisibility, and nonreciprocal transmission for nonlinear scattering systems, and examine the application of our general results in addressing the scattering problem for nonlinear single- and double-$δ$-function potentials.
In this paper, we address an alternative formulation for the exact inverse formula of the Radon transform on circle arcs arising in a modality of Compton Scattering Tomography in translational geometry proposed by Webber and Miller (Inverse Problems (36)2, 025007, 2020). The original study proposes a first method of reconstruction, using the theory of Volterra integral equations. The numerical realization of such a type of inverse formula may exhibit some difficulties, mainly due to stability issues. Here, we provide a suitable formulation for exact inversion that can be straightforwardly impl…
We develop a dynamical formulation of one-dimensional scattering theory where the reflection and transmission amplitudes for a general, possibly complex and energy-dependent, scattering potential are given as solutions of a set of dynamical equations. By decoupling and partially integrating these equations, we reduce the scattering problem to a second order linear differential equation with universal initial conditions that is equivalent to an initial-value time-independent Schrodinger equation. We give explicit formulas for the reflection and transmission amplitudes in terms of the solution o…
