We report measurements of the thermopower $S$ and Nernst signal $S_{yx}$ in graphene in a magnetic field $H$. Both quantities show strong quantum oscillations vs. the gate voltage $V_g$. Our measurements for Landau Levels of index $n\ne 0$ are in quantitative agreement with the edge-current model of Girvin and Jonson (GJ). The inferred off-diagonal thermoelectric conductivity $α_{yx}$ comes close to the quantum of Amps per Kelvin. At the Dirac point ($n=0$), however, the width of the peak in $α_{yx}$ is very narrow. We discuss features of the thermoelectric response at the Dirac point including the enhanced Nernst signal.
Motivated by recent proposal by Potter et al. [Phys. Rev. X 6, 031026 (2016)] concerning possible thermoelectric signatures of Dirac composite fermions, we perform a systematic experimental study of thermoelectric transport of an ultrahigh-mobility GaAs/AlxGa1-xAs two dimensional electron system at filling factor v = 1/2. We demonstrate that the thermopower Sxx and Nernst Sxy are symmetric and anti-symmetric with respect to B = 0 T, respectively. The measured properties of thermopower Sxx at v = 1/2 are consistent with previous experimental results. The Nernst signals Sxy of v = 1/2, which hav…
Weyl semimetals host linear energy dispersions around Weyl nodes, as well as monopoles of Berry curvature in momentum space around these points. These features give rise to unique transport signatures in a Weyl semimetal, such as transverse transport without an applied magnetic field, known as anomalous transport. The type-II Weyl semimetal, recently experimentally demonstrated in several materials, is classified by a tilting of the Weyl nodes. This paper provides a theoretical study on thermoelectric transport in time-reversal breaking type-II Weyl semimetals. Our results examine the balance …
By generalizing the Kubo-Streda formula for calculating electrical conductivities to the thermoelectric coefficients, we theoretically study the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) on the surface of a topological insulator induced by a finite concentration of magnetic impurities. The ANE is found to be modulated by the impurity scattering and thermal fluctuations, simultaneously, and so exhibits rich structures in the energy space. While the anomalous Hall conductivity is half-integer quantized with the Fermi level across the magnetic-impurity-induced gap, the anomalous Nernst signal (ANS) is fully …
Weyl semimetals expand research on topologically protected transport by adding bulk Berry monopoles with linearly dispersing electronic states and topologically robust, gapless surface Fermi arcs terminating on bulk node projections. Here, we show how the Nernst effect, combining entropy with charge transport, gives a unique signature for the presence of Dirac bands. The Nernst thermopower of NbP (maximum of 800 microV K-1 at 9 T, 109 K) exceeds its conventional thermopower by a hundredfold and is significantly larger than the thermopower of traditional thermoelectric materials. The Nernst eff…
The lead chalcogenides (Pb,Sn)Te and (Pb,Sn)Se are the first examples of topological crystalline insulators (TCI) predicted \cite{Fu,Hsieh} (and confirmed \cite{Hasan,Story,Takahashi}) to display topological surface Dirac states (SDS) that are protected by mirror symmetry. A starting premise \cite{Hsieh} is that the SDS arise from bulk states describable as massive Dirac states \cite{Wallis,Svane}, but this assumption is untested. Here we show that the thermoelectric response of the bulk states display features specific to the Dirac spectrum. We show that, in the quantum limit, the lowest Land…
WTe$_2$ is one of a series of recently discovered high mobility semimetals, some of whose properties are characteristic of topological Dirac or Weyl metals. One of its most interesting properties is the unsaturated giant magnetoresistance that it exhibits at low temperatures. An important question is the degree to which this property can be ascribed to a conventional semi-metallic model in which a highly compensated, high mobility metal exhibits large magnetoresistance. Here we show that the longitudinal thermopower (Seebeck effect) of semi-metallic WTe$_2$ exfoliated flakes exhibits periodic …
Thermoelectric measurements for graphene ribbons are currently performed on samples that include atomic disorder via defects and irregular edges. In this work, we investigate the thermopower or Seebeck coefficient of graphene ribbons within the linear response theory and the Landauer formalism, and we consider the diffusive regime taken as a limit of the ribbon aspect ratio. We find that the thermopower and the electronic conductivity depend not only on the aspect ratio, but also on chemical potential and temperature, which are set here as key parameters. The obtained numerical results with te…
The quantum corrections to the conductivity and the thermopower in monolayer graphene are studied. We use the recursive Green's function method to calculate numerically the conductivity and the thermopower of graphene. We then analyze these weak localization corrections by fitting with the analytical theory as function of the impurity parameters and the gate potential. As a result of the quantum corrections to the thermopower, we find large magnetothermopower which is shown to provide a very sensitive measure of the size and strength of the impurities. We compare these analytical and numerical…
Berry curvature acts analogous to a magnetic field in the momentum-space, and it modifies the flow of charge carriers and entropy. This induces several intriguing magnetoelectric and magnetothermal transport phenomena in Weyl semimetals. %, including the planar Hall and planar Nernst effect. Here, we explore the impact of the Berry curvature and orbital magnetization on the thermopower in tilted type-I and type-II Weyl semimetals, using semiclassical Boltzmann transport formalism. We analytically calculate the full magnetoconductivity matrix and use it to obtain the thermopower matrix for diff…
Cyclotron resonance of a Landau-quantized graphene can absorb significant amount of infrared light. However, application of this phenomenon to the photodetector had been limited due to the lack of efficient photon to charge conversion scheme. Here, we demonstrate the detection of cyclotron resonance in a partially metal-masked monolayer graphene two-terminal device using photo-Nernst effect. Due to the presence of the mask, incident infrared light is irradiated on only one-half of the graphene channel. This partial irradiation creates a temperature gradient perpendicular to the graphene channe…
It is known that electron scattering by surface polar phonons (SPPs) of the substrate reduces their mobility in supported graphene. However, there is no experimental evidence for contribution of drag of electrons by SPP to thermoelectric phenomena in graphene: graphene thermopower exhibits good agreement with Mott's law, which means that the diffusion contribution to the thermopower is dominant in a wide range of carrier densities and temperatures. Here we develop a complete theory of drag of electrons in graphene by SPP. By solving Boltzmann transport equation for electrons scattered by SPPs …
We consider intrinsic contributions to the spin Hall and spin Nernst effects in a bilayer graphene. The relevant electronic spectrum is obtained from the tight binding Hamiltonian, which also includes the intrinsic spin-orbit interaction. The corresponding spin Hall and spin Nernst conductivities are compared with those obtained from effective Hamiltonians appropriate for states in the vicinity of the Fermi level of a neutral bilayer graphene. Both conductivities are determined within the linear response theory and Green function formalism. The influence of an external voltage between the two …
We numerically study the electrical and thermoelectric transport properties in phosphorene in the presence of both a magnetic field and disorder. The quantized Hall conductivity is similar to that of a conventional two-dimensional electron gas, but the positions of all the Hall plateaus shift to the left due to the spectral asymmetry, in agreement with the experimental observations. The thermoelectric conductivity and Nernst signal exhibit remarkable anisotropy, and the thermopower is nearly isotropic. When a bias voltage is applied between top and bottom layers of phosphorene, both thermopowe…
As a canonical response to the applied magnetic field, the electronic states of a metal are fundamentally reorganized into Landau levels. In Dirac metals, Landau levels can be expected without magnetic fields, provided that an inhomogeneous strain is applied to spatially modulate electron hoppings in a similar way as the Aharonov-Bohm phase. We here predict that a twisted zigzag nanoribbon of graphene exhibits strain-induced pseudo Landau levels of unexplored but analytically solvable dispersions at low energies. The presence of such dispersive pseudo Landau levels results in a negative strain…
We present the observation of a transverse thermopower, or Planar Nernst Effect, in patterned ultrathin film (8 nm) of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) driven by heat current applied in-plane of the film and Planar Hall Effect (PHE) in the same LSMO ultrathin film with in-plane current of 100 microA is also investigated. Even for temperature difference of 5 K the Planar Nernst Effect in ultrathin film (8 nm) shows a coercivity of 3 Oe same as observed in Planar Hall Effect measurement and confirms the ferromagnetic nature of thin film. The angular dependence of transverse voltages shows four-fold sin{the…
Photocurrent measurements provide a powerful means of studying the spatially resolved optoelectronic and electrical properties of a material or device. Generally speaking there are two classes of mechanism for photocurrent generation: those involving separation of electrons and holes, and thermoelectric effects driven by electron temperature gradients. Here we introduce a new member in the latter class: the photo-Nernst effect. In graphene devices in a perpendicular magnetic field we observe photocurrent generated uniformly along the free edges, with opposite sign at opposite edges. The signal…

This letter calculates the contribution of electron-phonon interaction to thermoelectric effects in graphene. One considers the case of free standing graphene taking into account interaction with intrinsic acoustic phonons. The temperatures considered range from liquid nitrogen to the room level. It has turned out that the contribution to thermoelectromotive force due to electron drag by phonons is determined by the Fermi energy in the sample and phonon relaxation time. The explicit temperature dependence of the contribution to thermoelectromotive force deriving from by phonons is weak in cont…
Following the recent proposal by Weeks et al., which suggested that indium (or thallium) adatoms deposited on the surface of graphene should turn the latter into a quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator characterized by a sizeable gap, we perform a systematic study of the transport properties of this system as a function of the density of randomly distributed adatoms. While the samples are, by construction, very disordered, we find that they exhibit an extremely stable QSH phase with no signature of the spatial inhomogeneities of the adatom configuration. We find that a simple rescaling of the spin…
The thermoelectric power, including the Nernst and Seebeck effects, in graphene nanoribbon is studied. By using the non-equilibrium Green function combining with the tight-binding Hamiltonian, the Nernst and Seebeck coefficients are obtained. Due to the electron-hole symmetry, the Nernst coefficient is an even function of the Fermi energy while the Seebeck coefficient is an odd function regardless of the magnetic field. In the presence of a strong magnetic field, the Nernst and Seebeck coefficients are almost independent of the chirality and width of the nanoribbon, and they show peaks when th…
The observation of the spin Hall effect triggered intense research on pure spin current transport. With the spin Hall effect, the spin Seebeck effect, and the spin Peltier effect already observed, our picture of pure spin current transport is almost complete. The only missing piece is the spin Nernst (-Ettingshausen) effect, that so far has only been discussed on theoretical grounds. Here, we report the observation of the spin Nernst effect. By applying a longitudinal temperature gradient, we generate a pure transverse spin current in a Pt thin film. For readout, we exploit the magnetization-o…

The phonon-drag thermopower is studied in monolayer graphene on a piezoelectric substrate. The phonon-drag contribution S^g_PA from the extrinsic potential of piezoelectric surface acoustic (PA) phonons of a piezoelectric substrate (GaAs) is calculated as a function of temperature T and electron concentration n_s. At very low temperature, S^g_PA is found to be much greater than S^g_DA of the intrinsic deformation potential of acoustic (DA) phonons of the graphene. There is a crossover of S^g_PA and S^g_DA at around ~5 K. In graphene samples of about >10 um size, we predict S_g ~20 uV at 10 K, …

Using wave function matching approach and employing the Landauer-Buttiker formula a ferromagnetic graphene junction with a temperature gradient across the system, is studied. We calculate the thermally induced charge and spin current as well as the thermoelectric voltage (Seebeck effect) in the linear and nonlinear regimes. Our calculation revealed that due to the electron-hole symmetry, the charge Seebeck coefficient is, for an undoped magnetic graphene, an odd function of chemical potential while the spin Seebeck coefficient is an even function regardless of the temperature gradient and junc…
The derivation for the transport coefficients of an electron system in the presence of temperature gradient and the electric and magnetic fields are presented. The Nernst conductivity and the transverse thermoelectric power of the Dirac fermions in graphene under charged impurity scatterings and weak magnetic field are calculated on basis of the self-consistent Born approximation. The result is compared with so far the available experimental data.
Using density functional theory combined with a Green's function scattering approach, we examine the thermoelectric properties of hetero-nanoribbons formed from alternating lengths of graphene and boron nitride. In such structures, the boron nitride acts as a tunnel barrier, which weakly couples states in the graphene, to form mini-bands . In un-doped nanoribbons, the mini bands are symmetrically positioned relative to the Fermi energy and do not enhance thermoelectric performance significantly. In contrast, when the ribbons are doped by electron donating or electron accepting adsorbates, the …
Thermoelectric measurements have the potential to uncover the density of states of low-dimensional materials. Here, we present the anomalous thermoelectric behaviour of mono-layer graphene-nanowire (NW) heterostructures, showing large oscillations as a function of doping concentration. Our devices consist of InAs NW and graphene vertical heterostructures, which are electrically isolated by thin ($\sim$ 10nm) hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) layers. In contrast to conventional thermoelectric measurements, where a heater is placed on one side of a sample, we use the InAs NW (diameter $\sim 50$ nm) …
We study electronic transport in graphene under the influence of a transversal magnetic field $\f{B}(\f{r})=B(x)\f{e}_z$ with the asymptotics $B(x\to\pm\infty)=\pm B_0$, which could be realized via a folded graphene sheet in a constant magnetic field, for example. By solving the effective Dirac equation, we find robust modes with a finite energy gap which propagate along the fold -- where particles and holes move in opposite directions. Exciting these particle-hole pairs with incident photons would then generate a nearly perfect charge separation and thus a strong magneto-thermoelectric (Nerns…
In this work we study thermoelectric properties of graphene nanoribbons with side-attached organic molecules. By adopting a single-band tight binding Hamiltonian and the Green's function formalism, we calculated the transmission and Seebeck coefficients for different hybrid systems. The corresponding thermopower profiles exhibit a series of sharp peaks at the eigenenergies of the isolated molecule. We study the effects of the temperature on the thermoelectric response, and we consider random configurations of molecule distributions, in different disorder regimes. The main characteristics of th…

We consider Berry phase mediated Nernst effect in silicene. The low energy band structure of silicene consists of two valleys near the Dirac points, similar to graphene. The low energy transport properties of the quasiparticles can be described as Berry phase dependent phenomena. By contrast to graphene, silicene has strong spin-orbit interaction leading to opening of the gap in the energy spectrum and spin-splitting of the bands in each valley. If an electric field is applied perpendicular to the silicene sheet, it allows tunability of the gap. \ We show that this results in Berry-phase-suppo…
We find analytic asymptotic expressions at low temperature for the Casimir free energy, entropy and pressure of two parallel graphene sheets in the framework of the Lifshitz theory. The reflection coefficients of electromagnetic waves on graphene are described on the basis of first principles of quantum electrodynamics at nonzero temperature using the polarization tensor in (2+1)-dimensional space-time. The leading contributions to the Casimir entropy and to the thermal corrections to the Casimir energy and pressure are given by the thermal correction to the polarization tensor at nonzero Mats…
We theoretically study the thermoelectric transport properties of strained HgTe in the topological insulator phase. We developed a model for the system using a Dirac Hamiltonian including the effect of strain induced by the interface between HgTe and the CdTe substrate. The conductivity tensor was explored assuming the electrons are scattered by charge impurities, while the thermopower tensor was addressed using the Mott relation. Seebeck and Nernst responses exhibit remarkable enhancements in comparison with other two-dimensional Dirac materials, such as graphene, germanane, prosphorene and s…
We examine the possibility that the experimentally observed enhancement of superconducting (SC) fluctuations above the SC transition temperature in the underdoped cuprates is caused by stripes -- an intrinsic electronic inhomogeneity, common to hole-doped cuprates. By evaluating the strengths of the diamagnetic response and the Nernst effect within the striped SC model, we find results that are qualitatively consistent with the experimental observations. We make a prediction for anisotropic thermopower in detwinned samples that can be used to further test the proposed scenario.
We find the low-temperature behavior of the Casimir-Polder free energy and entropy for an atom interacting with real graphene sheet possessing nonzero energy gap and chemical potential. Employing the formalism of the polarization tensor, it is shown that the Casimir-Polder entropy goes to zero by the power law with vanishing temperature, i.e., the Nernst heat theorem is satisfied. This result is discussed in connection with the problems connected with account of free charge carriers in the Lifshitz theory.
Magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MtBLG) has proven to be an extremely promising new platform to realize and study a host of emergent quantum phases arising from the strong correlations in its narrow bandwidth flat band. In this regard, thermal transport phenomena like thermopower, in addition to being coveted technologically, is also sensitive to the particle-hole (PH) asymmetry, making it a crucial tool to probe the underlying electronic structure of this material. We have carried out thermopower measurements of MtBLG as a function of carrier density, temperature and magnetic field, and …
The thermoelectric response of high mobility single layer epitaxial graphene on silicon carbide substrates as a function of temperature and magnetic field have been investigated. For the temperature dependence of the thermopower, a strong deviation from the Mott relation has been observed even when the carrier density is high, which reflects the importance of the screening effect. In the quantum Hall regime, the amplitude of the thermopower peaks is lower than a quantum value predicted by theories, despite the high mobility of the sample. A systematic reduction of the amplitude with decreasing…
Thermoelectric effects are more sensitive and promising probes to topological properties of emergent materials, but much less addressed compared to other physical properties. Zirconium pentatelluride (ZrTe$_{5}$) has inspired active investigations recently because of its multiple topological nature. We study the thermoelectric effects of ZrTe$_{5}$ in a magnetic field and find several anomalous behaviors. The Nernst response has a steplike profile near zero field when the charge carriers are electrons only, suggesting the anomalous Nernst effect arising from a nontrivial profile of Berry curva…
We analyze the thermoelectric response of Dirac and Weyl semimetals using the semiclassical approach, focusing on the extrinsic contributions due to skew-scattering and side jump. Our results apply to linear response Nernst effect in ferromagnetic Dirac materials such as Fe$_3$Sn$_2$, Weyl semimetal Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ and to second order response of monolayer graphene on hBN with trigonal warping. Our analysis indicates that the extrinsic contributions can be a significant component of anomalous Nernst response and used to explain an enhanced thermoelectric response.
We investigate the spin-dependent thermoelectric effects in magnetic graphene in both diffusive and ballistic regimes. Employing the Boltzmann and Landauer formalisms we calculate the spin and charge Seebeck coefficients (thermopower) in magnetic graphene varying the spin splitting, temperature, and doping of the junction. It is found that while in normal graphene the temperature gradient drive a charge current, in the case of magnetic graphene a significant spin current is also established. In particular we show that in the undoped magnetic graphene in which different spin carriers belong to …
The in-plane phonon-drag thermopower $S^g$, diffusion thermopower $S^d$ and the power factor $PF$ are theoretically investigated in twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) as a function of twist angle $θ$, temperature $T$ and electron density $n_s$ in the region of low $T$ (1-20 K). As $θ$ approaches magic angle $θ_m$, the $S^g$ and $S^d$ are found to be strongly enhanced, which is manifestation of great suppression of Fermi velocity ${ν_F}^*$ of electrons in moire flat band near $θ_m$. This enhancement decreases with increasing $θ$ and $T$. In the Bloch- Gruneisen (BG) regime, it is found that $S^g \…
Thermopower of graphene-superconductor (GS) junction is analyzed within the extended Blonder- Tinkham-Klapwijk formalism. Within this approach we have also calculated the temperature de- pendence of the zero-bias conductance for GS junction. Both quantities reflect quasi-relativistic nature of massless Dirac fermions in graphene. Both, the linear and the non-linear regimes are considered.
We investigate the transport properties of a graphene layer in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction. Quite generally, spin-orbit interactions induce spin splittings and modifications of the graphene bandstructure. We calculate within the scattering approach the linear electric and thermoelectric responses of a clean sample when the Rashba coupling is localized around a finite region. We find that the thermoelectric conductance, unlike its electric counterpart, is quite sensitive to external modulations of the Fermi energy. Therefore, our results suggest that thermocurrent measurements…
We study thermoelectric devices where a single 18-annulene molecule is connected to metallic zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNR) via highly transparent contacts that allow for injection of evanescent wave functions from ZGNRs into the molecular ring. Their overlap generates a peak in the electronic transmission, while ZGNRs additionally suppress hole-like contributions to the thermopower. Thus optimized thermopower, together with suppression of phonon transport through ZGNR-molecule-ZGNR structure, yield the thermoelectric figure of merit ZT ~ 0.5 at room temperature and 0.5 < ZT < 2.5 below li…
We study the electric and thermal transport of the Dirac carriers in monolayer graphene using the Boltzmann-equation approach. Motivated by recent thermopower measurements [F. Ghahari, H.-Y.~Xie, T. Taniguchi, K. Watanabe, M.~S.~Foster, and P.~Kim, Phys.\ Rev.\ Lett.\ {\bf 116}, 136802 (2016)], we consider the effects of quenched disorder, Coulomb interactions, and electron--optical-phonon scattering. Via an unbiased numerical solution to the Boltzmann equation we calculate the electrical conductivity, thermopower, and electronic component of the thermal conductivity, and discuss the validity …
We apply the semi-classical quantum Boltzmann formalism for the computation of transport properties to multilayer graphene. We compute the electrical conductivity as well as the thermal conductivity and thermopower for Bernal-stacked multilayers with an even number of layers. We show that the window for hydrodynamic transport in multilayer graphene is similar to the case of bilayer graphene. We introduce a simple hydrodynamic model which we dub the multi-fluid model and which can be used to reproduce the results for the electrical conductivity and thermopower from the quantum Boltzmann equatio…
We complete measurements of interconversions among the full triad of thermal gradients, charge currents, and spin currents in the topological insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$ by quantifying the efficiency with which thermal gradients can generate transverse spin currents. We accomplish this by comparing the spin Nernst magneto-thermopower to the spin Hall magnesistance for bilayers of Bi$_2$Se$_3$/CoFeB. We find that Bi$_2$Se$_3$ does generate substantial thermally-driven spin currents. A lower bound for the ratio of spin current to thermal gradient is $J_s/\nabla_x T$ = (4.9 $\pm$ 0.9) $\times$ 10$^{6}…
A semi-classical analysis of magneto-thermopower behaviour, namely, the \textit{Seebeck} and \textit{Nernst} effect (NE) in quantum wells of IV-VI lead salts with significant extrinsic Rashba spin-orbit coupling (RSOC) is performed in this report. In addition to the spin-dependent Seebeck effect that has been observed before, we also theoretically predict a similar spin-delineated behaviour for its thermal analog, the spin-dependent NE. The choice of lead salts follows from a two-fold advantage they offer, in part, to their superior thermoelectric properties, especially PbTe, while their low b…
In this review, we discuss the impact of interfaces and heterojuctions on the electronic and thermoelectric transport properties of materials. We review recent progress in understanding electronic transport in two-dimensional (2D) materials ranging from graphene to transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), their homojunctions (grain boundaries), lateral heterojunctions (such as graphene/MoS$_2$ lateral interfaces), and vertical van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures. We also review work in thermoelectric properties of 2D heterojunctions, as well as their applications in creating devices such as r…
We derive the low-temperature behavior of the Casimir-Polder free energy for a polarizable atom interacting with graphene sheet which possesses the nonzero energy gap $Δ$ and chemical potential $μ$. The response of graphene to the electromagnetic field is described by means of the polarization tensor in the framework of Dirac model on the basis of first principles of thermal quantum field theory in the Matsubara formulation. It is shown that the thermal correction to the Casimir-Polder energy consists of three contributions. The first of them is determined by the Matsubara summation using the …
A thermal gradient as the driving force for spin currents plays a key role in spin caloritronics. In this field the spin Seebeck effect (SSE) is of major interest and was investigated in terms of in-plane thermal gradients inducing perpendicular spin currents (transverse SSE) and out-of-plane thermal gradients generating parallel spin currents (longitudinal SSE). Up to now all spincaloric experiments employ a spatially fixed thermal gradient. Thus anisotropic measurements with respect to well defined crystallographic directions were not possible. Here we introduce a new experiment that allows …
