We define a modification of the Erdos-Renyi random graph process which can be regarded as the mean field frozen percolation process. We describe the behavior of the process using differential equations and investigate their solutions in order to show the self-organized critical and extremum properties of the critical frozen percolation model. We prove two limit theorems about the distribution of the size of the component of a typical frozen vertex.
In frozen percolation, i.i.d. uniformly distributed activation times are assigned to the edges of a graph. At its assigned time, an edge opens provided neither of its endvertices is part of an infinite open cluster; in the opposite case, it freezes. Aldous (2000) showed that such a process can be constructed on the infinite 3-regular tree and asked whether the event that a given edge freezes is a measurable function of the activation times assigned to all edges. We give a negative answer to this question, or, using an equivalent formulation and terminology introduced by Aldous and Bandyopadhya…
We study two closely related processes on the triangular lattice: frozen percolation, where connected components of occupied vertices freeze (they stop growing) as soon as they contain at least $N$ vertices, and forest fire processes, where connected components burn (they become entirely vacant) at rate $ζ> 0$. In this paper, we prove that when the density of occupied sites approaches the critical threshold for Bernoulli percolation, both processes display a striking phenomenon: the appearance of near-critical "avalanches". More specifically, we analyze the avalanches, all the way up to the na…
Consider critical site percolation on a "nice" planar lattice: each vertex is occupied with probability $p = p_c$, and vacant with probability $1 - p_c$. Now, suppose that additional vacancies ("holes", or "impurities") are created, independently, with some small probability, i.e. the parameter $p_c$ is replaced by $p_c - \varepsilon$, for some small $\varepsilon > 0$. A celebrated result by Kesten says, informally speaking, that on scales below the characteristic length $L(p_c - \varepsilon)$, the connection probabilities remain of the same order as before. We prove a substantial and subtle g…
We establish the mean-field bounds $γ\ge 1$, $δ\ge 2$ and $\triangle \ge 2$ on the critical exponents of the Poisson-Boolean continuum percolation model under a moment condition on the radii; these were previously known only in the special case of fixed radii (in the case of $γ$), or not at all (in the case of $δ$ and $\triangle$). We deduce these as consequences of the mean-field bound $β\le 1$, recently established by Duminil-Copin, Raoufi and Tassion under the same moment condition, using a relative entropy method introduced by the authors in previous work.
We use the lace expansion to prove an infra-red bound for site percolation on the hypercubic lattice in high dimension. This implies the triangle condition and allows us to derive several critical exponents that characterize mean-field behavior in high dimensions.
We construct and analyze a continuum dynamical percolation process which evolves in a random environment given by a $γ$-Liouville measure. The homogeneous counterpart of this process describes the scaling limit of discrete dynamical percolation on the rescaled triangular lattice. Our focus here is to study the same limiting dynamics, but where the speed of microscopic updates is highly inhomogeneous in space and is driven by the $γ$-Liouville measure associated with a two-dimensional log-correlated field $h$. Roughly speaking, this continuum percolation process evolves very rapidly where the f…
We give a new derivation of mean-field percolation critical behaviour from the triangle condition that is quantitatively much better than previous proofs when the triangle diagram $\nabla_{p_c}$ is large. In contrast to earlier methods, our approach continues to yield bounds of reasonable order when the triangle diagram $\nabla_p$ is unbounded but diverges slowly as $p \uparrow p_c$, as is expected to occur in percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ at the upper-critical dimension $d=6$. Indeed, we show in particular that if the triangle diagram diverges polylogarithmically as $p \uparrow p_c$ then mean…
We study percolation properties of the upper invariant measure of the contact process on $\mathbb{Z}^d$. Our main result is a sharp percolation phase transition with exponentially small clusters throughout the subcritical regime and a mean-field lower bound for the infinite cluster density in the supercritical regime. This generalizes and simplifies an earlier result of Van den Berg [Ann. App. Prob., 2011], who proved a sharp percolation phase transition on $\mathbb{Z}^2$. Our proof relies on the OSSS inequality for Boolean functions and is inspired by a series of papers by Duminil-Copin, Raou…
We consider critical percolation on Galton-Watson trees and prove quenched analogues of classical theorems of critical branching processes. We show that the probability critical percolation reaches depth $n$ is asymptotic to a tree-dependent constant times $n^{-1}$. Similarly, conditioned on critical percolation reaching depth $n$, the number of vertices at depth $n$ in the critical percolation cluster almost surely converges in distribution to an exponential random variable with mean depending only on the offspring distribution. The incipient infinite cluster (IIC) is constructed for a.e. Gal…
We study Bernoulli bond percolation on nonunimodular quasi-transitive graphs, and more generally graphs whose automorphism group has a nonunimodular quasi-transitive subgroup. We prove that percolation on any such graph has a non-empty phase in which there are infinite light clusters, which implies the existence of a non-empty phase in which there are infinitely many infinite clusters. That is, we show that $p_c<p_h \leq p_u$ for any such graph. This answers a question of Haggstrom, Peres, and Schonmann (1999), and verifies the nonunimodular case of a well-known conjecture of Benjamini and Sch…
In this paper, we consider nearest-neighbor oriented percolation with independent Bernoulli bond-occupation probability on the $d$-dimensional body-centered cubic (BCC) lattice $\mathbb{L}^d$ and the set of non-negative integers $\mathbb{Z}_+$. Thanks to the orderly structure of the BCC lattice, we prove that the infrared bound holds on $\mathbb{L}^d\times\mathbb{Z}_+$ in all dimensions $d\geq 9$. As opposed to ordinary percolation, we have to deal with complex numbers due to asymmetry induced by time-orientation, which makes it hard to bound the bootstrap functions in the lace-expansion analy…
We prove up-to-constants bounds on the two-point function (i.e., point-to-point connection probabilities) for critical long-range percolation on the $d$-dimensional hierarchical lattice. More precisely, we prove that if we connect each pair of points $x$ and $y$ by an edge with probability $1-\exp(-β\|x-y\|^{-d-α})$, where $0<α<d$ is fixed and $β\geq 0$ is a parameter, then the critical two-point function satisfies \[ \mathbb{P}_{β_c}(x\leftrightarrow y) \asymp \|x-y\|^{-d+α} \] for every pair of distinct points $x$ and $y$. We deduce in particular that the model has mean-field critical behavi…
We prove that Bernoulli bond percolation on any nonamenable, Gromov hyperbolic, quasi-transitive graph has a phase in which there are infinitely many infinite clusters, verifying a well-known conjecture of Benjamini and Schramm (1996) under the additional assumption of hyperbolicity. In other words, we show that $p_c<p_u$ for any such graph. Our proof also yields that the triangle condition $\nabla_{p_c}<\infty$ holds at criticality on any such graph, which is known to imply that several critical exponents exist and take their mean-field values. This gives the first family of examples of one-e…
We prove upper bounds on the one-arm exponent $η_1$ for a class of dependent percolation models which generalise Bernoulli percolation; while our main interest is level set percolation of Gaussian fields, the arguments apply to other models in the Bernoulli percolation universality class, including Poisson-Voronoi and Poisson-Boolean percolation. More precisely, in dimension $d=2$ we prove that $η_1 \le 1/3$ for continuous Gaussian fields with rapid correlation decay (e.g. the Bargmann-Fock field), and in $d \ge 3$ we prove $η_1 \le d/3$ for finite-range fields, both discrete and continuous, a…
