A necessary condition for the existence of a skyrmion in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates with $\mathrm{SU(2)}$ symmetry was recently provided by two of the authors [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 97}, 080403 (2006)], by mapping the problem to a classical particle in a potential subject to time-dependent dissipation. Here we further elaborate this approach. For two classes of models, we demonstrate the existence of the critical dissipation strength above which the skyrmion solution does not exist. Furthermore, we discuss the local stability of the skyrmion solution by considering the second-order variation. A sufficient condition for the local stability is given in terms of the ground-state energy of a one-dimensional quantum-mechanical Hamiltonian. This condition requires a minimum number of bosons, for a certain class of the trap potential. In the optimal case, the minimum number of bosons can be as small $\sim 10^4$.
We show that the stability of three-dimensional Skyrmions in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates depends critically on scattering lengths, atom numbers, trap rotation and trap anisotropy. In particular, for the $^{87}$Rb $|F=1,m_{f}=-1>$, $|F=2,m_{f}=1>$ hyperfine states stability is sensitive to the scattering lengths at the level of their present experimental uncertainties. In a cigar shaped trap, we find stable Skyrmions with as few as $2\times10^{6}$ atoms, a number which scales with the inverse square root of the trap frequency. These can be stabilized against drift out of the trap by laser…
Micromagnetic simulations have been performed to investigate the controllability of the skyrmion position in antiferromagnetic nanotracks with their magnetic properties modified spatially. In this study we have modeled magnetic defects as local variations on the material parameters, such as the exchange stiffness, saturation magnetization, perpendicular magnetocrystalline anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya constant. Thus, we have observed not only pinning (potential well) but also scattering (potential barrier) of antiferromagnetic skyrmions, when adjusting either a local increase or a local…
We investigate the non-Abelian Josephson effect in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates with double optical traps. We propose, for the first time, a real physical system which contains non-Abelian Josephson effects. The collective modes of this weak coupling system have very different density and spin tunneling characters comparing to the Abelian case. We calculate the frequencies of the pseudo Goldstone modes in different phases between two traps respectively, which are a crucial feature of the non-Abelian Josephson effects. We also give an experimental protocol to observe this novel effect in fu…
We theoretically investigate the effect of an anisotropic trap on the instability of the polar $(m_F=0)$ phase of a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate. By considering rigorously the spatial quantization, we show that the growth of the nascent ferromagnetic phase at short times becomes anisotropic with stronger oscillations in the magnetization correlation function along the unconfined direction.
We investigate several mechanisms of vortex creation during splitting of a spinor BEC in a magnetic trap controlled by a pair of current carrying wires and bias magnetic fields. Our study is motivated by a recent MIT experiment on splitting BECs with a similar trap, where unexpected fork-like structure appeared in the interference fringes corresponding to interference of two condensates, one with and the other without a singly quantized vortex. It is well-known that in a spin-1 BEC in a quadrupole trap a doubly quantized vortex is produced topologically by a ``slow'' reversal of bias magnetic …
We study the semiclassical dynamics of a spinor condensate with the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction included. The time evolution of the population imbalance and the relative phase among different spin components depends greatly on the relative strength of interactions as well as on the initial conditions. The interplay of spin exchange and dipole-dipole interaction makes it possible to manipulate the atomic population on different components, leading to the phenomena of spontaneous magnetization and Macroscopic Quantum Self Trapping. Simple estimate demonstrates that these effects are acces…
In this work, we derive the equations of motion governing the hydrodynamics of spin-F spinor condensates. We pursue a description based on standard physical variables (total density and superfluid velocity), alongside 2F `spin-nodes': unit vectors that describe the spin F state, and also exhibit the point-group symmetry of a spinor condensate's mean-field ground state. The hydrodynamic equations of motion consist of a mass continuity equation, 2F Landau-Lifshitz equations for the spin-nodes, and a modified Euler equation. In particular, we provide a generalization of the Mermin-Ho relation to …
We consider a spinor condensate of $^{87}$Rb atoms in F=1 hyperfine state confined in an optical dipole trap. Putting initially all atoms in $m_F=0$ component we find that the system evolves towards a state of thermal equilibrium with kinetic energy equally distributed among all magnetic components. We show that this process is dominated by the dipolar interaction of magnetic spins rather than spin mixing contact potential. Our results show that because of a dynamical separation of magnetic components the spin mixing dynamics in $^{87}$Rb condensate is governed by dipolar interaction which pla…
The magnetic radiation of the fully-condensed states of $^{23}$Na condensates have been studied. A narrow characteristic spectral line with a wave length proportional to N^(-2/5) (N is the number of particles) and with a probability of transition proportional to N^(17/5) emitted (absorbed) by the condensate was found. It implies that short wave radiation with a huge probability of transition can be obtained if numerous atoms are trapped. A new technique developed by the authors, namely, the analytical forms of the fractional parentage coefficients, was used to calculate analytically the matrix…
We observe interlaced square vortex lattices in rotating two-component dilute-gas Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC). After preparing a hexagonal vortex lattice in a single-component BEC in an internal state $|1>$ of $^{87}$Rb atoms, we coherently transfer a fraction of the superfluid to a different internal state $|2>$. The subsequent evolution of this pseudo-spin-1/2 superfluid towards a state of offset square lattices involves an intriguing interplay of phase-separation and -mixing dynamics, both macroscopically and on the length scale of the vortex cores, and a stage of vortex turbulence. Sta…
We show that an effective quadratic Zeeman effect can be generated in $^{52}$Cr by proper laser configurations, and in particular by the dipole trap itself. The induced quadratic Zeeman effect leads to a rich ground-state phase diagram, can be used to induce topological defects by controllably quenching across transitions between phases of different symmetries, allows for the observability of the Einstein-de Haas effect for relatively large magnetic fields, and may be employed to create $S=1/2$ systems with spinor dynamics. Similar ideas could be explored in other atomic species opening an exc…
We classify all possible fractional charge vortices of charge less than unity in spin-1 and spin-2 polar and cyclic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with zero magnetization. Statics and dynamics of these vortices in quasi-two-dimensional spinor BECs are studied employing accurate numerical solution and a Lagrange variational approximation. The results for density and collective-mode oscillation are illustrated using fractional-charge BEC vortex of $^{23}$Na and $^{87}$Rb atoms with realistic interaction and trapping potential parameters.
We report on a study of the spin-1 ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate with magnetic dipole-dipole interactions. By solving the non-local Gross-Pitaevskii equations for this system, we find three ground-state phases. Moreover, we show that a substantial orbital angular momentum accompanied by chiral symmetry breaking emerges spontaneously in a certain parameter regime. We predict that all these phases can be observed in the spin-1 $^{87}$Rb condensate by changing the number of atoms or the trap frequency.
The generation of the population oscillation of the multicomponent spinor Bose-Einstein condensate is demonstrated in this paper. We observe and examine the nonsynchronous decreasing processes of the magnetic fields generated between quadrupole coils and Ioffe coils during the switch-off of the quadrupole-Ioffe-configuration trap, which is considered to induce a nonadiabatic transition. Starting from the two-level Schrödinger equation, we have done some numerical fitting and derived an analytical expression identical to the results of E. Majorana and C. Zener, of which both the results well ma…
Magnetic dipole-dipole interaction dominated Bose-Einstein condensates are discussed under spinful situations. We treat the spin degrees of freedom as a classical spin vector, approaching from large spin limit to obtain an effective minimal Hamiltonian; a version extended from a non-linear sigma model. By solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation we find several novel spin textures where the mass density and spin density are strongly coupled, depending upon trap geometries due to the long-range and anisotropic natures of the dipole-dipole interaction.
We studied the static and dynamic domain wall solutions of spinor Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in an optical lattice. The single and double domain wall solutions are constructed analytically. Our results show that the magnetic field and light-induced dipolar interactions play an important role for both the formation of different domain walls and the adjusting of domain wall width and velocity. Moreover, these interactions can drive the motion of domain wall of Bose ferromagnet systems similar to that driven by the external magnetic field or the spin-polarized current in fermion ferromagne…
We study the mechanisms and the limits of pumping vorticity into a spinor condensate through manipulations of magnetic (B-) fields. We discover a fundamental connection between the geometrical properties of the magnetic fields and the quantized circulation of magnetically trapped atoms, a result which generalizes several recent experimental and theoretical studies. The optimal procedures are devised that are capable of continuously increasing or decreasing a condensate's vorticity by repeating certain two step B-field manipulation protocols. We carry out detailed numerical simulations that sup…
We analyze the spinor dynamics of a Rb-87 F=2 condensate initially prepared in the m_F=0 Zeeman sublevel. We show that this dynamics, characterized by the creation of correlated atomic pairs in m_F=+/-1, presents an intriguing multi-resonant magnetic field dependence induced by the trap inhomogeneity. This dependence is directly linked to the most unstable Bogoliubov spin excitations of the initial m_F = 0 condensate, showing that, in general, even a qualitative understanding of the pair creation efficiency in a spinor condensate requires a careful consideration of the confinement.
We study the ground state and classify its phase diagram for a mixture of two spin-1 condensates in the absence of external magnetic (B-) field according to atomic parameters for intra- and inter-species spin exchange coupling and singlet pairing interaction. Ignoring the inter-species singlet pairing interaction, the ground state phases are found analytically. Numerical approach of simulated annealing is adopted when the singlet pairing interaction is present. Our results on the phase diagram and the boundaries between phases allow for easy identifications of quantum phase transitions, that c…
Extended Gross-Pitaevskii equations for the rotating F=2 condensate in a harmonic trap are solved both numerically and variationally using trial functions for each component of the wave function. Axially-symmetric vortex solutions are analyzed and energies of polar and cyclic states are calculated. The equilibrium transitions between different phases with changing of the magnetization are studied. We show that at high magnetization the ground state of the system is determined by interaction in "density" channel, and at low magnetization spin interactions play a dominant role. Although there ar…
A method to produce a spin-dependent rotating potential using near-resonant circularly polarized laser beams is proposed. It is shown that half-quantum vortices are nucleated in a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate with an antiferromagnetic interaction. In contrast to the vortex nucleation in a scalar BEC, the spin-vortex nucleation occurs at a low rotation frequency ($\simeq 0.1 ω_\perp$ with $ω_\perp$ being the radial trap frequency) in a short nucleation time $\simeq 50$ ms without dissipation. A method for nondestructive measurement of half-quantum vortices is discussed.

We analyze the structure of spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates in the presence of a homogenous magnetic field. We classify the homogenous stationary states and study their existence, bifurcations, and energy spectra. We reveal that the phase separation can occur in the ground state of polar condensates, while the spin components of the ferromagnetic condensates are always miscible and no phase separation occurs. Our theoretical model, confirmed by numerical simulations, explains that this phenomenon takes place when the energy of the lowest homogenous state is a concave function of the magnetiza…
