Exponential random graphs are used extensively in the sociology literature. This model seeks to incorporate in random graphs the notion of reciprocity, that is, the larger than expected number of triangles and other small subgraphs. Sampling from these distributions is crucial for parameter estimation hypothesis testing, and more generally for understanding basic features of the network model itself. In practice sampling is typically carried out using Markov chain Monte Carlo, in particular either the Glauber dynamics or the Metropolis-Hasting procedure.
In this paper we characterize the high and low temperature regimes of the exponential random graph model. We establish that in the high temperature regime the mixing time of the Glauber dynamics is $Θ(n^2 \log n)$, where $n$ is the number of vertices in the graph; in contrast, we show that in the low temperature regime the mixing is exponentially slow for any local Markov chain. Our results, moreover, give a rigorous basis for criticisms made of such models. In the high temperature regime, where sampling with MCMC is possible, we show that any finite collection of edges are asymptotically independent; thus, the model does not possess the desired reciprocity property, and is not appreciably different from the Erdős-Rényi random graph.
In this paper, we establish the exponential mixing property of stochastic models for the incompressible second grade fluid. The general criterion established by Cyril Odasso plays an important role.
We modify the coupling method established in [22, 20] and develop a technique to prove the exponential mixing of a 2D stochastic system forced by degenerate Levy noises. In particular, these Levy noises include $α$-stable noises (0 < $α$ < 2). Thanks to the stimulating discussion [14], this technique is promising to study the exponential mixing problem of SPDEs driven by degenerate symmetric $α$-stable noises.
By a coupling method, we prove that a family of stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) driven by highly degenerate pure jump Lévy noises are exponential mixing. These pure jump Lévy noises include $α$-stable process with $α\in (0,2)$
The Hoeffding-type-inequalities are obtained for the distribution tails of canonical (degenerate) U- and V-statistics of an arbitrary order based on samples from a stationary sequence of observations satisfying $ρ$-mixing.
We consider the superposition of symmetric simple exclusion dynamics speeded-up in time, with spin-flip dynamics in a one-dimensional interval with periodic boundary conditions. We show that the mixing time has an exponential lower bound in the system size if the potential of the hydrodynamic equation has more than two local minima. We also apply our estimates to show that the normalized hitting times of rare events converge to a mean one exponential random variable if the potential has a unique minimum.
In this paper, we discuss exponential mixing property for Markovian semigroups generated by segment processes associated with several class of retarded Stochastic Differential Equations (SDEs) which cover SDEs with constant/variable/distributed time-lags. In particular, we investigate the exponential mixing property for (a) non-autonomous retarded SDEs by the Arzelà--Ascoli tightness characterization of the space $\C$ equipped with the uniform topology (b) neutral SDEs with continuous sample paths by a generalized Razumikhin-type argument and a stability-in-distribution approach and (c) jump-d…
In this paper, we prove that weak solutions of 3D stochastic primitive equations have exponential mixing property if the noise is sufficiently smooth and non-degenerate. With the help of uniqueness of strong solution of 3D stochastic primitive equations, we obtain that all weak solutions which are limitations of Galerkin approximations share the same invariant measure. In particular, the invariant measure of strong solution is unique. The coupling method plays a key role.
We provide a general bound on the Wasserstein distance between two arbitrary distributions of sequences of Bernoulli random variables. The bound is in terms of a mixing quantity for the Glauber dynamics of one of the sequences, and a simple expectation of the other. The result is applied to estimate, with explicit error, expectations of functions of random vectors for some Ising models and exponential random graphs in "high temperature" regimes.
First, we establish an abstract ergodic result on $\mR^d$. Classical ergodic results on $\mR^d$ require that the process is irreducible, we weaken it to some weak form of irreducibility in this article. The main method used in this article is coupling. Then, we apply our abstract ergodic result to stochastic differential equations driven by a Lévy noise and obtain a new result.
We establish the existence, uniqueness and exponential attraction properties of an invariant measure for the MHD equations with degenerate stochastic forcing acting only in the magnetic equation. The central challenge is to establish time asymptotic smoothing properties of the associated Markovian semigroup corresponding to this system. Towards this aim we take full advantage of the characteristics of the advective structure to discover a novel Hörmander-type condition which only allows for several noises in the magnetic direction.
In this paper, we establish the existence, uniqueness and attraction properties of an invariant measure for the real Ginzburg-Landau equation in the presence of a degenerate stochastic forcing acting only in four directions. The main challenge is to establish time asymptotic smoothing properties of the Markovian dynamics corresponding to this system. To achieve this, we propose a condition which only requires four noises
Let $\{B(ξ_n,r_n)\}_{n\ge1}$ be a sequence of random balls whose centers $\{ξ_n\}_{n\ge1}$ is a stationary process, and $\{r_n\}_{n\ge1}$ is a sequence of positive numbers decreasing to 0. Our object is the random covering set $E=\limsup\limits_{n\to\infty}B(ξ_n,r_n)$, that is, the points covered by $B(ξ_n,r_n)$ infinitely often. The sizes of $E$ are investigated from the viewpoint of measure, dimension and topology.

We study an infinite white $α$-stable systems with unbounded interactions, proving the existence by Galerkin approximation and exponential mixing property by an $α$-stable version of gradient bounds.
We prove the strong Feller property and exponential mixing for 3D stochastic Navier-Stokes equation driven by mildly degenerate noises (i.e. all but finitely many Fourier modes are forced) via Kolmogorov equation approach.
We prove that every random walk in a uniformly elliptic random environment satisfying the cone mixing condition and a non-effective polynomial ballisticity condition with high enough degree has an asymptotic direction.
We consider random walks in strong-mixing random Gibbsian environments in $\mathbb{Z}^d, d\ge 2$. Based on regeneration arguments, we will first provide an alternative proof of Rassoul-Agha's conditional law of large numbers (CLLN) for mixing environment Rassoul-Agha (2005). Then, using coupling techniques, we show that there is at most one nonzero limiting velocity in high dimensions ($d\ge 5$).
We prove an upper bound of $1.5324 n \log n$ for the mixing time of the random-to-random insertion shuffle, improving on the best known upper bound of $2 n \log n$. Our proof is based on the analysis of a non-Markovian coupling.
In this work we present different results concerning mixing properties of multivariate infinitely divisible (ID) stationary random fields. First, we derive some necessary and sufficient conditions for mixing of stationary ID multivariate random fields in terms of their spectral representation. Second, we prove that (linear combinations of independent) mixed moving average fields are mixing. Further, using a simple modification of the proofs of our results we are able to obtain weak mixing versions of our results. Finally, we prove the equivalence of ergodicity and weak mixing for multivariate …
We prove a law of large numbers for a class of multidimensional random walks in random environments where the environment satisfies appropriate mixing conditions, which hold when the environment is a weak mixing field in the sense of Dobrushin and Shlosman. Our result holds if the mixing rate balances moments of some random times depending on the path. It applies in the non-nestling case, but we also provide examples of nestling walks that satisfy our assumptions. The derivation is based on an adaptation, using coupling, of the regeneration argument of Sznitman-Zerner.
We construct a two-dimensional counterexample of a random walk in random environment (RWRE). The environment is stationary, mixing and perturbative, and the corresponding RWRE has non-trivial probability to wander off to the upper right. This is in contrast to the 0-1-law that holds for i.i.d.\ environments.
In this paper we study the asymptotic normality of the normalized partial sum of a Hilbert-space valued strictly stationary random field satisfying the interlaced $ρ'$-mixing condition.
For a given pair of positive integers $d$ and $N$ with $N \geq 2$, for strictly stationary random fields that are indexed by the $d$-dimensional integer lattice and satisfy $N$-tuplewise independence, the dependence coefficients associated with the $ρ$-, $ρ'$-, and $ρ^*$-mixing conditions can decay together at an arbitrary rate. Another, closely related result is also established. In particular, these constructions provide classes of examples pertinent to limit theory for random fields that involve such mixing conditions together with certain types of "extra" assumptions on the marginal and bi…
We consider the question of exponential mixing for random dynamical systems on arbitrary compact manifolds without boundary. We put forward a robust, dynamics-based framework that allows us to construct space-time smooth, uniformly bounded in time, universal exponential mixers. The framework is then applied to the problem of proving exponential mixing in a classical example proposed by Pierrehumbert in 1994, consisting of alternating periodic shear flows with randomized phases. This settles a longstanding open problem on proving the existence of a space-time smooth (universal) exponentially mi…
In this paper we extend a central limit theorem of Peligrad for uniformly strong mixing random fields satisfying the Lindeberg condition in the absence of stationarity property. More precisely, we study the asymptotic normality of the partial sums of uniformly $α$-mixing non-stationary random fields satisfying the Lindeberg condition, in the presence of an extra dependence assumption involving maximal correlations.
Consider the subgraph of the discrete $d$-dimensional torus of size length $N$, $d\ge3$, induced by the range of the simple random walk on the torus run until the time $uN^d$. We prove that for all $d\ge 3$ and $u>0$, the mixing time for the random walk on this subgraph is of order $N^2$ with probability at least $1 - Ce^{-(\log N)^2}$.
In this paper we study random walks on dynamical random environments in $1 + 1$ dimensions. Assuming that the environment is invariant under space-time shifts and fulfills a mild mixing hypothesis, we establish a law of large numbers and a concentration inequality around the asymptotic speed. The mixing hypothesis imposes a polynomial decay rate of covariances on the environment with sufficiently high exponent but does not impose uniform mixing. Examples of environments for which our methods apply include the contact process and Markovian environments with a positive spectral gap, such as the …
We study the mixing time of a random walk on the torus, alternated with a Lebesgue measure preserving Bernoulli map. Without the Bernoulli map, the mixing time of the random walk alone is $O(1/ε^2)$, where $ε$ is the step size. Our main results show that for a class of Bernoulli maps, when the random walk is alternated with the Bernoulli map $φ$ the mixing time becomes $O(|\ln ε|)$. We also study the \emph{dissipation time} of this process, and obtain $O(|\ln ε|)$ upper and lower bounds with explicit constants.
It has been claimed in Aldous, Miermont and Pitman [PTRF, 2004] that all Lévy trees are mixings of inhomogeneous continuum random trees. We give a rigorous proof of this claim in the case of a stable branching mechanism, relying on a new procedure for recovering the tree distance from the graphical spanning trees that works simultaneously for stable trees and inhomogeneous continuum random trees.
We consider an elliptic and time-inhomogeneous diffusion process with time-periodic coefficients evolving in a bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^d$ with a smooth boundary. The process is killed when it hits the boundary of the domain (hard killing) or after an exponential time (soft killing) associated with some bounded rate function. The branching particle interpretation of the non absorbed diffusion again behaves as a set of interacting particles evolving in an absorbing medium. Between absorption times, the particles evolve independently one from each other according to the diffusion semigroup;…
A mixing Markov chain is proved to be realized as a random walk in a directed graph subject to a synchronizing road coloring. The result ensures existence of appropriate random mappings in Propp--Wilson's coupling from the past. The proof is based on the road coloring theorem. A necessary and sufficient condition for approximate preservation of entropies is also given.
In this work we prove sufficient conditions for the Glauber dynamics corresponding to a sequence of (non-product) measures on finite product spaces to be rapidly mixing, i.e. that the mixing time with respect to the total variation distance satisfies $t_{mix} = O(N \log N)$, where $N$ is the system size. The proofs do not rely on coupling arguments, but instead use functional inequalities. As a byproduct, we obtain exponential decay of the relative entropy along the Glauber semigroup. These conditions can be checked in various examples, which include the exponential random graph models with su…
We show that for any semi-random transposition shuffle on $n$ cards, the mixing time of any given $k$ cards is at most $n\log k$, provided $k=o((n/\log n)^{1/2})$. In the case of the top-to-random transposition shuffle we show that there is cutoff at this time with a window of size O(n), provided further that $k\to\infty$ as $n\to\infty$ (and no cutoff otherwise). For the random-to-random transposition shuffle we show cutoff at time $(1/2)n\log k$ for the same conditions on $k$. Finally, we analyse the cyclic-to-random transposition shuffle and show partial mixing occurs at time $\leαn\log k$ …
We study stochastic partial differential equations of the reaction-diffusion type. We show that, even if the forcing is very degenerate (i.e. has not full rank), one has exponential convergence towards the invariant measure. The convergence takes place in the topology induced by a weighted variation norm and uses a kind of (uniform) Doeblin condition.
In this paper we consider the problem of sampling from the low-temperature exponential random graph model (ERGM). The usual approach is via Markov chain Monte Carlo, but Bhamidi et al. showed that any local Markov chain suffers from an exponentially large mixing time due to metastable states. We instead consider metastable mixing, a notion of approximate mixing relative to the stationary distribution, for which it turns out to suffice to mix only within a collection of metastable states. We show that the Glauber dynamics for the ERGM at any temperature -- except at a lower-dimensional critical…
We consider parabolic stochastic partial differential equations driven by white noise in time. We prove exponential convergence of the transition probabilities towards a unique invariant measure under suitable conditions. These conditions amount essentially to the fact that the equation transmits the noise to all its determining modes. Several examples are investigated, including some where the noise does not act on every determining mode directly.
We prove existence and uniqueness of the invariant measure and exponential mixing in the total-variation norm for a class of stochastic differential equations driven by degenerate compound Poisson processes. In addition to mild assumptions on the distribution of the jumps for the driving process, the hypotheses for our main result are that the corresponding control system is dissipative, approximately controllable and solidly controllable. The solid controllability assumption is weaker than the well-known parabolic Hörmander condition and is only required from a single point to which the syste…
The family of U-statistics plays a fundamental role in statistics. This paper proves a novel exponential inequality for U-statistics under the time series setting. Explicit mixing conditions are given for guaranteeing fast convergence, the bound proves to be analogous to the one under independence, and extension to non-stationary time series is straightforward. The proof relies on a novel decomposition of U-statistics via exploiting the temporal correlatedness structure. Such results are of interest in many fields where high dimensional time series data are present. In particular, applications…
Exponential random graph models have become increasingly important in the study of modern networks ranging from social networks, economic networks, to biological networks. They seek to capture a wide variety of common network tendencies such as connectivity and reciprocity through local graph properties. Sampling from these exponential distributions is crucial for parameter estimation, hypothesis testing, as well as understanding the features of the network in question. We inspect the efficiency of a popular sampling technique, the Glauber dynamics, for vertex-weighted exponential random graph…
For a large class of quickly mixing dynamical systems, we prove that the error in the almost sure approximation with a Brownian motion is of order O((log n)^a) with a $\ge$ 2. Specifically, we consider nonuniformly expanding maps with exponential and stretched exponential decay of correlations, with one-dimensional H{ö}lder continuous observables.
The East process, a well known reversible linear chain of spins, represents the prototype of a general class of interacting particle systems with constraints modeling the dynamics of real glasses. In this paper we consider a generalization of the East process living in the d-dimensional lattice and we establish new progresses on the out- of-equilibrium behavior. In particular we prove a form of (local) exponential ergodicity when the initial distribution is far from the stationary one and we prove that the mixing time in a finite box grows linearly in the side of the box.
