We consider the space $\mathcal M$ of ordered quadruples of distinct points in the boundary of complex hyperbolic $n$-space, $\ch{n},$ up to its holomorphic isometry group ${\rm PU}(n,1).$ One of the important problems in complex hyperbolic geometry is to construct and describe a moduli space for $\mathcal M$. For $n=2$, this problem was considered by Falbel, Parker, and Platis. The main purpose of this paper is to construct a moduli space for $\mathcal M $ for any dimension $n \geq 1$. The major innovation in our paper is the use of the Gram matrix instead of a standard position of points.
Let $Σ$ be a hyperbolic link with $m$ components in a 3-dimensional manifold $X$. In this paper, we will show that the moduli space of marked hyperbolic cone structures on the pair $(X, Σ)$ with all cone angle less than $2π/3$ is an $m$-dimensional open cube, parameterized naturally by the $m$ cone angles. As a corollary, we will give a proof of a special case of Thurston's geometrization theorem for orbifolds.
In this paper we combine our recent work on regular globally hyperbolic maximal anti-de Sitter structures with the classical theory of globally hyperbolic maximal Cauchy-compact anti-de Sitter manifolds in order to define an augmented moduli space. Moreover, we introduce a coordinate system in this space that resembles the complex Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates for hyperbolic quasi-Fuchsian manifolds.
The space AH(M) of marked hyperbolic 3-manifold homotopy equivalent to a compact 3-manifold with boundary M sits inside the PSL_2(C)-character variety X(M) of π_1(M). We study the dynamics of the action of Out(π_1(M)) on both AH(M) and X(M). The nature of the dynamics reflects the topology of M. The quotient AI(M)=AH(M)/Out(π_1(M)) may naturally be thought of as the moduli space of unmarked hyperbolic 3-manifolds homotopy equivalent to M and its topology reflects the dynamics of the action.
Moduli spaces of hyperbolic surfaces may be endowed with a symplectic structure via the Weil-Petersson form. Mirzakhani proved that Weil-Petersson volumes exhibit polynomial behaviour and that their coefficients store intersection numbers on moduli spaces of curves. In this survey article, we discuss these results as well as some consequences and applications.
We investigate 3-dimensional globally hyperbolic AdS manifolds containing "particles", i.e., cone singularities of angles less than $2π$ along a time-like graph $Γ$. To each such space we associate a graph and a finite family of pairs of hyperbolic surfaces with cone singularities. We show that this data is sufficient to recover the space locally (i.e., in the neighborhood of a fixed metric). This is a partial extension of a result of Mess for non-singular globally hyperbolic AdS manifolds.
Fixing a closed hyperbolic surface S, we define a moduli space AI(S) of unmarked hyperbolic 3-manifolds homotopy equivalent to S. This 3-dimensional analogue of the moduli space M(S) of unmarked hyperbolic surfaces homeomorphic to S has bizarre local topology, possessing many points that are not closed. There is, however, a natural embedding of M(S) into AI(S) and a compactification of AI(S) such that this embedding extends to an embedding of the Deligne-Mumford compactification of M(S) into the compactification of AI(S).
Given a simple closed curve $γ$ on a connected, oriented, closed surface $S$ of negative Euler characteristic, Mirzakhani showed that the set of points in the moduli space of hyperbolic structures on $S$ having a simple closed geodesic of length $L$ of the same topological type as $γ$ equidistributes with respect to a natural probability measure as $L \to \infty$. We prove several generalizations of Mirzakhani's result and discuss some of the technical aspects ommited in her original work. The dynamics of the earthquake flow play a fundamental role in the arguments in this paper.
An integral hyperbolic lattice is called reflective if its automorphism group is generated by reflections, up to finite index. Since 1981, it is known that their number is essentially finite. We show that K3 surfaces over C with reflective Picard lattices can be characterized in terms of compositions of their self-correspondences via moduli of sheaves with primitive isotropic Mukai vector: Their self-correspondences with integral action on the Picard lattice are numerically equivalent to compositions of a finite number of especially simple self-correspondences via moduli of sheaves. This relat…
We show that the complex hyperbolic metrics defined by Deligne-Mostow and Thurston on ${\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$ are singular Kähler-Einstein metrics when ${\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$ is embedded in the Deligne-Mumford-Knudsen compactification $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$. As a consequence, we obtain a formula computing the volumes of ${\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$ with respect to these metrics using intersection of boundary divisors of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$. In the case of rational weights, following an idea of Y. Kawamata, we show that these metrics actually represent the first Chern class of some lin…
This article introduces a universal moduli space for the set whose archetypal element is a pair that consists of a metric and second fundamental form from a compact, oriented, positive genus minimal surface in some hyperbolic 3-manifold. This moduli space is a smooth, finite dimensional manifold with canonical maps to both the cotangent bundle of the Teichmueller space and the space of SO(3,C) representations for the given genus surface. These two maps embed the universal moduli space as a Lagrangian submanifold in the product of the latter two spaces.
Cutting a hyperbolic surface X along a simple closed multi-geodesic results in a hyperbolic structure on the complementary subsurface. We study the distribution of the shapes of these subsurfaces in moduli space as boundary lengths go to infinity, showing that they equidistribute to the Kontsevich measure on a corresponding moduli space of metric ribbon graphs. In particular, random subsurfaces look like random ribbon graphs, a law which does not depend on the initial choice of X. This result strengthens Mirzakhani's famous simple closed multi-geodesic counting theorems for hyperbolic surfaces…
In this short note we explain how to adapt the construction of two Riemannian metrics on the $\mathrm{SL}(3,\mathbb{R})$-Hitchin component to the deformation space of globally hyperbolic anti-de Sitter structures: the pressure metric and the Loftin metric (studied by Qiongling Li). We show that the former is degenerate and we characterize its degenerate locus, whereas the latter is nowhere degenerate and the Fuchsian locus is a totally geodesic copy of Teichmüller space endowed with a multiple of the Weil-Petersson metric.
We compute and analyse the moduli space of those real projective structures on a hyperbolic 3-orbifold that are modelled on a single ideal tetrahedron in projective space. Parameterisations are given in terms of classical invariants, traces, and geometric invariants, cross ratios.
For the moduli space of unmarked convex $\mathbb{RP}^2$ structures on the surface $S_{g,m}$ with negative Euler characteristic, we investigate the subsets of the moduli space defined by the notions like boundedness of projective invariants, area, Gromov hyperbolicity constant, quasisymmetricity constant etc. These subsets are comparable to each other. We show that the Goldman symplectic volume of the subset with certain projective invariants bounded above by $t$ and fixed boundary simple root lengths $\mathbf{L}$ is bounded above by a positive polynomial of $(t,\mathbf{L})$ and thus the volume…
We generalise to the genus one case several results of Thurston concerning moduli spaces of flat Euclidean structures with conical singularities on the two dimensional sphere. More precisely, we study the moduli space of flat tori with $n$ cone points and a prescribed holonomy $ρ$. In his paper `Flat Surfaces' Veech has established that under some assumptions on the cone angles, such a moduli space ${\mathcal{F}}_{[ρ]}\subset \mathscr M_{1,n}$ carries a natural geometric structure modeled on the complex hyperbolic space ${\mathbb C}{\mathbb{H} }^{n-1}$ which is not metrically complete. Using s…
Using global considerations, Mess proved that the moduli space of globally hyperbolic flat Lorentzian structures on $S\times\mathbb{R}$ is the tangent bundle of the Teichmüller space of $S$, if $S$ is a closed surface. One of the goals of this paper is to deepen this surprising occurrence and to make explicit the relation between the Mess parameters and the embedding data of any Cauchy surface. This relation is pointed out by using some specific properties of Codazzi tensors on hyperbolic surfaces. As a by-product we get a new Lorentzian proof of Goldman's celebrated result about the coinciden…
Moduli spaces of hyperbolic surfaces with geodesic boundary components of fixed lengths may be endowed with a symplectic structure via the Weil-Petersson form. We show that, as the boundary lengths are sent to infinity, the Weil-Petersson form converges to a piecewise linear form first defined by Kontsevich. The proof rests on the observation that a hyperbolic surface with large boundary lengths resembles a graph after appropriately scaling the hyperbolic metric. We also include some applications to intersection theory on moduli spaces of curves.
This article is devoted to the variational study of two functions defined over some Teichmueller spaces of hyperbolic surfaces. One is the systole of geodesic loops based at some fixed point, and the other one is the systole of arcs.\par For each of them we determine all the critical points. It appears that the systole of arcs is a topological Morse function, whereas the systole of geodesic loops have some degenerate critical points. However, these degenerate critical points are in some sense the obvious one, and they do not interfere in the variational study of the function.\par At a nondegen…
Given a closed hyperbolic surface $S$, let $\cQF$ denote the space of quasifuchsian hyperbolic metrics on $S\times\R$ and $\cGH_{-1}$ the space of maximal globally hyperbolic anti-de Sitter metrics on $S\times\R$. We describe natural maps between (parts of) $\cQF$ and $\cGH_{-1}$, called "Wick rotations", defined in terms of special surfaces (e.g. minimal/maximal surfaces, CMC surfaces, pleated surfaces) and prove that these maps are at least $C^1$ smooth and symplectic with respect to the canonical symplectic structures on both $\cQF$ and $\cGH_{-1}$. Similar results involving the spaces of g…
A celebrated result of Mirzakhani states that, if $(S,m)$ is a finite area \emph{orientable} hyperbolic surface, then the number of simple closed geodesics of length less than $L$ on $(S,m)$ is asymptotically equivalent to a positive constant times $L^{\dim\mathcal{ML}(S)}$, where $\mathcal{ML}(S)$ denotes the space of measured laminations on $S$. We observed on some explicit examples that this result does not hold for \emph{nonorientable} hyperbolic surfaces. The aim of this article is to explain this surprising phenomenon. Let $(S,m)$ be a finite area \emph{nonorientable} hyperbolic surface.…
We establish an identity for closed hyperbolic surfaces whose terms depend on the dilogarithms of the lengths of simple closed geodesics in all 3-holed spheres and 1-holed tori in the surface.
We describe all connected components of the space of hyperbolic Gorenstein quasi-homogeneous surface singularities. We prove that any connected component is homeomorphic to a quotient of R^d by a discrete group.
In arXiv:1503.08402v2 Gelander described a new compactification of the moduli space of finite area hyperbolic surfaces using invariant random subgroups. The goal of this paper is to relate this compactification to the classical augmented moduli space, also known as the Deligne-Mumford compactification. We define a continuous finite-to-one surjection from the augmented moduli space to the IRS compactification. The cardinalities of this map's fibers admit a uniform upper bound that depends only on the topology of the underlying surface.
Given a measured lamination on a finite area hyperbolic surface we consider a natural measure Mon the real line obtained by taking the push-forward of the volume measure of the unit tangent bundle of the surface under an intersection function associated with the lamination. We show that the measure M gives summation identities for the Rogers dilogarithm function on the moduli space of a surface.
Let $S=S_{g,p}$ be a compact, orientable surface of genus $g$ with $p$ punctures and such that $d(S):=3g-3+p>0$. The mapping class group $\textup{Mod}_S$ acts properly discontinuously on the Teichmüller space $\mathcal T(S)$ of marked hyperbolic structures on $S$. The resulting quotient $\mathcal M(S)$ is the moduli space of isometry classes of hyperbolic surfaces. We provide a version of precise reduction theory for finite index subgroups of $\textup{Mod}_S$, i.e., a description of exact fundamental domains. As an application we show that the asymptotic cone of the moduli space $\mathcal M(S)…
Let $M_g$ be the moduli space of hyperbolic surfaces of genus $g$ endowed with the Weil-Petersson metric. In this paper, we show that for any $ε>0$, as genus $g$ goes to infinity, a generic surface $X\in M_g$ satisfies that the first eigenvalue $λ_1(X)>\frac{3}{16}-ε$. As an application, we also show that a generic surface $X\in M_g$ satisfies that the diameter $\mathrm{diam}(X)<(4+ε)\ln(g)$ for large genus.
We develop a natural and geometric way to realize the hyperbolic plane as the moduli space of marked genus 1 Riemann surfaces. To do so, a metric is defined on the Teichmüller space of the torus, inspired by Thurston's Lipschitz metric for the case of hyperbolic surfaces. Based on extremal Lipschitz maps, the Teichmüller space of the torus with this new metric is shown to be isometric to the hyperbolic plane under the usual identification. This also gives a new way to recover the complex-analytic Teichmüller metric via metric geometry on the underlying surfaces. Along the way, we prove a few r…
