The 21micron and 30micron bands are the strongest dust emission features detected in evolved low- and intermediate-mass C-rich stars (i.e. asymptotic giant branch [AGB] stars, proto-planetary nebulae [PPN], and planetary nebulae [PN]). While the 21micron feature is rare and exists only in the transient PPN phase, the 30micron feature is more common and seen in the entire late stage of stellar evolution, from AGB to PPN and PN phases, as well as in the low-metallicity galaxies: the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The carriers of these features remain unidentified. Eleven of the twelve well-identified 21micron sources also emit in the 30micron band, suggesting that their carriers may be somewhat related.
In this paper we discuss the relevance of, and possible scientific gains which can be acquired from studying circumstellar molecular spectra toward evolved stars. Where can we expect circumstellar molecular spectra, why would we want to study these spectra, which molecules might be present, and what can we learn from these studies? We present an overview of reported detections, and discuss some of the results.
I argue that the presence of magnetic fields around evolved stars, e.g., asymptotic giant branch stars, and in PNe, does not necessarily imply that the magnetic field plays a global dynamical role in shaping the circumstellar envelope. Instead, I favor magnetic fields with small coherence lengths, which result from stellar magnetic spots or from jets blown by an accreting companion. Although the magnetic field does not play a global role in shaping the circumstellar envelope, it may enhance local motion (turbulent) via magnetic tension and reconnection. The locally strong magnetic tension may …
We present 8-13 micron spectra of eight red giants in the globular cluster 47 Tucanae (NGC 104), obtained at the European Southern Observatory 3.6m telescope. These are the first mid-infrared spectra of metal-poor, low-mass stars. The spectrum of at least one of these, namely the extremely red, large-amplitude variable V1, shows direct evidence of circumstellar grains made of amorphous silicate.
Spitzer Space Telescope spectra reveal 10 micron silicate emission from circumstellar dust orbiting six externally-polluted white dwarfs. Micron-size glasses with an olivine stoichiometry can account for the distinctively broad wings that extend to 12 microns; these particles likely are produced by tidal-disruption of asteroids. The absence of infrared PAH features is consistent with a scenario where extrasolar rocky planets are assembled from carbon-poor solids.
We report HST/NICMOS coronagraphic images of the HD 15115 circumstellar disk at 1.1\micron. We find a similar morphology to that seen in the visible and at H band--an edge-on disk that is asymmetric in surface brightness. Several aspects of the 1.1\micron data are different, highlighting the need for multi-wavelength images of each circumstellar disk. We find a flattening to the western surface brightness profile at 1.1\micron interior to 2\arcsec (90 AU) and a warp in the western half of the disk. We measure the surface brightness profiles of the two disk lobes and create a measure of the dus…
We report spectra obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope in the 5 to 35 micron range of HD 233517, an evolved K2 III giant with circumstellar dust. At wavelengths longer than 13 microns, the flux is a smooth continuum that varies approximately as frequency to the -5/3 power. For wavelengths shorter than 13 microns, although the star is oxygen-rich, PAH features produced by carbon-rich species at 6.3 microns, 8.2 microns, 11.3 microns and 12.7 microns are detected along with likely broad silicate emission near 20 microns. These results can be explained if there is a passive, flared disk orbi…
Observations at 70 microns with the Spitzer Space Telescope have detected several stellar systems within 65 pc of the Sun. Of 18 presumably young systems detected in this study, as many as 15 have 70-micron emission in excess of that expected from their stellar photospheres. Five of the systems with excesses are members of the Tucanae Association. The 70-micron excesses range from a factor of ~2 to nearly 30 times the expected photospheric emission from these stars. In contrast to the 70-micron properties of these systems, there is evidence for an emission excess at 24 microns for only HD 3003…
Silicon carbide, a refractory material, condenses near the photospheres of C-rich AGB stars, giving rise to a conspicuous emission feature at 11.3 mu. In the presence of a stellar wind, the SiC grains are carried outwards to colder regions, where less refractory carbonaceous material can condense, either by itself or in mantles upon SiC grains. Enough carbon can condense on the latter that their specific feature is completely veiled. Thus may be explained a) the coexistence of the SiC feature protruding above a carbonaceous continuum, with a range of contrasts, corresponding to various volume …
We report the angular diameters of two Mira variables (U Ari and Z Sco), three semiregular (SR) and irregular variables (SW Vir, eta Gem and mu Gem) and a supergiant SR variable (TV Gem) by lunar occultation observations in the near-IR broad K-band (2.2 micron). Lunar occultations of eta Gem and mu Gem were also observed for the first time simultaneously in both the K and L' bands, yielding angular diameters at 2.2 and 3.8 micron. Effective temperatures and linear radii are also derived for all the observed sources and compared with earlier measurements. The mode of pulsation of both Mira and …
We combine HST/NICMOS imaging photometry of the HR 4796A disk at previously unobserved wavelengths between 1.71-2.22\micron with reprocessed archival observations to produce a measure of the dust's scattering efficiency as a function of wavelength. The spectrum of the dust, synthesized from the seven photometric measures, is characterized by a steep red slope increasing from 0.5 \micron to 1.6 \micron followed by a flattening of the spectrum at wavelengths $>$ 1.6 \micron. We fit the spectrum with a model population of dust grains made of tholins, materials comprised of complex organic materia…
We present high resolution 0.45" x 0.32" observations from the BIMA array toward the Herbig Ae system MWC 480 in the lambda = 1.4 mm dust continuum. We resolve a circumstellar disk of radius ~170 AU and constrain the disk parameters by comparing the observations to flat disk models. These results show that the typical fit parameters of the disk, such as the mass, Md ~ 0.04-0.18 Mo, and the surface density power law index, p=0.5 or 1, are comparable to those of the lower mass T Tauri stars. The dust in the MWC 480 disk can be modeled as processed dust material (beta ~ 0.8), similar to the Herbi…
We present preliminary results of spectroscopic data obtained with the La Silla 3.6m TIMMI2 and the VLT-ISAAC instruments. We have obtained 23 TIMMI2 N-band and 18 Q-band spectra for our total sample of 36 stars in March 2003 to investigate the evolution of the grain properties in circumstellar disks. Our sample consists of Herbig stars, T Tauri stars and Vega-like stars, some of which have recently been identified to be members of nearby (<100 pc) stellar associations. Silicate and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features are detected and the spatial resolution of TIMMI2 allowe…
We have observed the bipolar post-AGB candidate OH 231.8+4.2, using the mid-infrared interferometer MIDI and the infrared camera with the adaptive optics system NACO on the Very Large Telescope. An unresolved core (<200 mas in FWHM) is found at the center of the OH 231.8+4.2 in the 3.8 micron image. This compact source is resolved with the interferometer. We used two 8-meter telescopes with four different baselines, which cover projected baseline lengths from 62 to 47 meters, and projected position angles from 112 to 131 degrees that are almost perpendicular to the bipolar outflow. Fringes fro…
We present new 10.8 and 18.2 micron images of HR 4796A, a young A0V star that was recently discovered to have a spectacular, nearly edge-on, circumstellar disk prominent at ~20 microns (Jayawardhana et al. 1998; Koerner et al. 1998). These new images, obtained with OSCIR at Keck II, show that the disk's size at 10 microns is comparable to its size at 18 microns. Therefore, the 18 micron-emitting dust may also emit some, or all, of the 10 micron radiation. Using these multi-wavelength images, we determine a "characteristic" diameter of 2-3 microns for the mid-infrared-emitting dust particles if…
There is increasing evidence that low mass stars with circumstellar disks can be born close to massive stars, in some cases within tenths of a pc. If the disks have lifetimes greater than those of the more massive stars, they are exposed to the radiation fields and gas flows from the late evolutionary phases and supernovae of the massive stars. The fast flows from supernovae are likely to give some stripping of mass from the disks, but do not typically lead to complete disruption of the disks. In the slow wind from a red supergiant star, there is the possibility of gravitational accretion of w…
We report high spatial resolution 11.2 and 18.1 micron imaging of V838 Monocerotis obtained with Gemini Observatory's Michelle instrument in 2007 March. Strong emission is observed from the unresolved stellar core of V838 Mon in our Gemini imagery, and is confirmed by Spitzer MIPS 24 micron imaging obtained in 2007 April. The 2007 flux density of the unresolved mid-infrared emission component is 2 times brighter than that observed in 2004. No clear change in the net amount of 24 micron extended emission is observed between the 2004 and 2007 epoch Spitzer imagery. We interpret these data as evi…
We present 2-45 micron spectra of a large sample of carbon-rich evolved stars in order to study the ``30'' micron feature. We find the ``30'' micron feature in sources in a wide range of sources: low mass loss carbon stars, extreme carbon-stars, post-AGB objects and planetary nebulae. We extract the profiles from the sources by using a simple systematic approach to model the continuum. We find large variations in the wavelength and width of the extracted profiles of the ``30'' micron feature. We modelled the whole range of profiles in a simple way by using magnesium sulfide (MgS) dust grains w…
We have detected continuum emission at 450 microns, 850 microns and 1.35 millimeters from SS Lep (or 17 Lep), 3 Pup and probably BM Gem, likely or confirmed binary systems consisting of at least one evolved giant. The observed submillimeter fluxes are probably emitted by grains rather than ionized gas. The dust temperature is greater than 70 K within 6 arcseconds of each source. To explain why grains are so cold near the star, we suggest that the emission at wavelengths greater than 450 microns is produced by particles as large as 0.1 millimeter in radius, and that these large particles probab…
We present a detailed study of the circumstellar envelope of the post-asymptotic giant branch ``21 micron object'' HD 56126. We build a detailed dust radiative transfer model of the circumstellar envelope in order to derive the dust composition and mass, and the mass-loss history of the star. To model the emission of the dust we use amorphous carbon, hydrogenated amorphous carbon, magnesium sulfide and titanium carbide. We present a detailed parametrisation of the optical properties of hydrogenated amorphous carbon as a function of H/C content. The mid-infrared imaging and spectroscopy is best…
Infrared spectra of a number of evolved O-rich stars have been obtained with the Short- and Long- Wavelength spectrometers on board the Infrared Space Observatory. The very broad wavelength coverage (2.4-197 micron) obtained by combining observations made with the two spectrometers includes practically all of the flux emitted by the sources, and allows us to determine the emission and absorption features of the dense circumstellar dust shells. Agreement between the fluxes obtained by the two instruments is generally very good; the largest discrepancies are probably due to source variability. O…
We observed a sample of evolved stars in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC) with the Infrared Spectrograph on the Spitzer Space Telescope. Comparing samples from the SMC, LMC, and the Galaxy reveals that the dust-production rate depends on metallicity for oxygen-rich stars, but carbon stars with similar pulsation properties produce similar quantities of dust, regardless of their initial metallicity. Other properties of the oxygen-rich stars also depend on metallicity. As the metallicity decreases, the fraction of naked (i.e. dust-free) stars increases, and among the naked star…
We present 3.6 - 160 micron infrared images of Kepler's supernova remnant (SN1604) obtained with the IRAC and MIPS instruments on the Spitzer Space Telescope. We also present MIPS SED low resolution spectra in the 55 - 95 micron region. The observed emission in the MIPS 24 micron band shows the entire shell. Emission in the MIPS 70 micron and IRAC 8 micron bands is seen only from the brightest regions of 24 micron emission, which also correspond to the regions seen in optical Halpha images. Shorter wavelength IRAC images are increasingly dominated by stars, although faint filaments are discern…
We report the first resolved scattered light images of the circumstellar dust disk around the old Pre-Main Sequence star HD 141569 A. The disk seen in HST/NICMOS2 images shapes a bright annulus inclined at 37.5 degrees +/- 4.5 degrees from edge-on. This ring peaks at 325+/-10 AU from the star with a characteristic width of ~150 AU. At 1.6 microns, the dust grains scatter a total flux density of at least 4.5 +/- 0.5 mJy. Our disk model using the spatial distribution implied by the images does not explain the 10 microns excess and requires an additional grain population closer to the star. Some …
We present mid-infrared nulling interferometric and direct imaging observations of the Herbig Ae star HD 100546 obtained with the Magellan I (Baade) 6.5 m telescope. The observations show resolved circumstellar emission at 10.3, 11.7, 12.5, 18.0, and 24.5 microns. Through the nulling observations (10.3, 11.7 and 12.5 microns), we detect a circumstellar disk, with an inclination of 45 +- 15 degrees with respect to a face-on disk, a semimajor axis position angle of 150 +- 10 degrees (E of N), and a spatial extent of about 25 AU. The direct images (18.0 and 24.5 microns) show evidence for cooler …
Fluxes and upper limits in the wavelength range from 3.6 to 70 microns from the Spitzer Space Telescope are provided for twenty solar-mass Pleiades members. One of these stars shows a probable mid-IR excess and two others have possible excesses, presumably due to circumstellar debris disks. For the star with the largest, most secure excess flux at MIPS wavelengths, HII1101, we derive Log(L[dust]/L[Sun]) ~ -3.8 and an estimated debris disk mass of 4.2 x 10^-5 M(Earth) for an assumed uniform dust grain size of 10 microns If the stars with detected excesses are interpreted as stars with relativel…
For a complete 12 micron flux-limited sample of 207 IRAS sources, we have extracted light curves in seven infrared bands between 1.25 - 60 microns using the database of the DIRBE instrument on the COBE satellite. Using previous infrared surveys, we filtered these light curves to remove datapoints affected by nearby companions. In the time-averaged DIRBE color-color plots, we find clear segregation of semi-regulars, Mira variables, carbon stars, OH/IR stars, and red giants without circumstellar dust and with little or no visual variation. The DIRBE 1.25 - 25 micron colors become progressively r…
We describe photometry at mid-infrared passbands (1.2 - 24 microns) for a sample of 18 elliptical galaxies. All surface brightness distributions resemble de Vaucouleurs profiles, indicating that most of the emission arises from the photospheres or circumstellar regions of red giant stars. The spectral energy distribution peaks near 1.6 microns, but the half-light or effective radius has a pronounced minimum near the K band (2.15 microns). Apart from the 24 micron passband, all sample-averaged radial color profiles have measurable slopes within about twice the (K band) effective radius. Evident…
We discuss how we obtain the spatial distribution of ice on the surface of the circumstellar disk around young stars. Ice in the disks plays a very important role in various issues, for instance, on the disk structure, on the planet formation, on the isotopic anomaly in meteorites, and on the origin of the sea on the Earth. Therefore, the spatially resolved observation of the condensation/sublimation front of ice, so-called ``snow line'' is strongly required. Here, we propose a new method for obtaining the spatially resolved ``snow line'' on the circumstellar disks by observing 3 \micron H$_2$…
We report the discovery of a circumstellar disk around the young A0 star, HR 4796, in thermal infrared imaging carried out at the W.M. Keck Observatory. By fitting a model of the emission from a flat dusty disk to an image at lambda=20.8 microns, we derive a disk inclination, i = 72 +6/-9 deg from face on, with the long axis of emission at PA 28 +/-6 deg. The intensity of emission does not decrease with radius as expected for circumstellar disks but increases outward from the star, peaking near both ends of the elongated structure. We simulate this appearance by varying the inner radius in our…
High-resolution infrared spectroscopy in the 2.3-4.6 micron region is reported for the peculiar A supergiant, single-lined spectroscopic binary HR 4049. Lines from the CO fundamental and first overtone, OH fundamental, and several H2O vibration-rotation transitions have been observed in the near-infrared spectrum. The spectrum of HR 4049 appears principally in emission through the 3 and 4.6 micron region and in absorption in the 2 micron region. The 4.6 micron spectrum shows a rich 'forest' of emission lines. All the spectral lines observed in the 2.3-4.6 micron spectrum are shown to be circum…
We present mid-IR N-band $(λ_{eff} = 10.2\micron)$ photometry of a carefully selected sample of T Tauri stars thought to be single from the Taurus-Auriga molecular cloud. Infrared excesses in these stars are generally attributed to circumstellar dust-disks. Combining observations at 2.16$\micron$ (K$_{s}$-band) and 10.2$\micron$ (N-band) we probe a region in the circumstellar dust-disk from a few stellar radii through the terrestrial planet zone (0.02-1.0AU). By analyzing the distribution of the $(K_{s}-N)$ color index with respect to previously measured photometric rotation periods we investi…
Our aim is to determine the presence and location of the emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) towards low and intermediate mass young stars with disks using large aperture telescopes. VLT-VISIR N-band spectra and VLT-ISAAC and VLT-NACO L-band spectra of 29 sources are presented, spectrally resolving the 3.3, 8.6, 11.2, and 12.6 micron PAH features. Spatial-extent profiles of the features and the continuum emission are derived and used to associate the PAH emission with the disks. The results are discussed in the context of recent PAH-emission disk models. The 3.3, 8.6, and 11.…
We report detection of an extended mid-infrared emission from \iras 18576+0341 (AFGL 2298). The object shows a dusty circumstellar shell that has diameter of $\age 7\arcsec$ at 10.3 and 18.0 $\um$. The dust nebula shows two emission peaks concentrically elongated and symmetrically oriented on the opposite sides of the third, central peak, which appears to be the central star of the system. The observed mid-infrared morphology indicates that the circumstellar dust shell has an equatorially-enhanced material distribution, which is a common signature of stellar objects that have experienced mass …
We present 10-15 micron spectra of a sample of H II regions, YSOs and evolved stars that show strong unidentified infrared emission features, obtained with the ISO/SWS spectrograph on-board ISO. These spectra reveal a plethora of emission features with bands at 11.0, 11.2, 12.0, 12.7, 13.5 and 14.2 micron. These features are observed to vary considerably in relative strength to each-other from source to source. In particular, the 10-15 micron spectra of the evolved stars are dominated by the 11.2 micron band while for H II regions the 12.7 is typically as strong as the 11.2 micron band. Analys…
There is strong evidence that the planets in the solar system evolved from a disk-shaped solar nebula ~4.56 Gyr ago. By studying young stars in various evolutionary stages, one aims at tracing back the early history of the solar system, in particular the timescales for disk dissipation and for the formation of planetary systems. We used the VLT & ISAAC, and ESA's Infrared Space Observatory & ISOCAM to study the circumstellar environment of young low-mass stars.
We present new results of a spectroscopic survey of circumstellar HI in the direction of evolved stars made with the Nancay Radiotelescope. The HI line at 21 cm has been detected in the circumstellar shells of a variety of evolved stars: AGB stars, oxygen-rich and carbon-rich, Semi-Regular and Miras, and Planetary Nebulae. The emissions are generally spatially resolved, i.e. larger than 4', indicating shell sizes of the order of 1 pc which opens the possibility to trace the history of mass loss over the past ~ 10^4-10^5 years. The line-profiles are sometimes composite. The individual component…
The circumstellar masers around evolved stars offer an interesting possibility to measure stellar parameters through VLBI astrometry. In this paper the application of this technique is discussed, including the accuracy and the uncertainties of the method. The different maser species (OH, H_2O, SiO) have slightly different characteristics and applications. This paper does not concern astrometry of maser spots to study the kinematics of the envelope, but concentrates on attempting to measure the motion of the underlying star.
Context: We study the structure and evolution of circumstellar discs around evolved binaries and their impact on the evolution of the central system. Aims: To study in detail the binary nature of RUCen and ACHer, as well as the structure and mineralogy of the circumstellar environment. Methods: We combine multi-wavelength observations with a 2D radiative transfer study. Our radial velocity program studies the central stars, while our Spitzer spectra and broad-band SEDs are used to constrain mineralogy, grain sizes and physical structure of the circumstellar environment. Results: We determine t…
We present a fit to the spectral energy distribution of OH 127.8+0.0, a typical asymptotic giant branch star with an optically thick circumstellar dust shell. The fit to the dust spectrum is achieved using non-spherical grains consisting of metallic iron, amorphous and crystalline silicates and water ice. Previous similar attempts have not resulted in a satisfactory fit to the observed spectral energy distributions, mainly because of an apparent lack of opacity in the 3--8 micron region of the spectrum. Non-spherical metallic iron grains provide an identification for the missing source of opac…
We have obtained the first high spatial (0.05'') and spectral (R~35000) resolution 2 micron spectrum of the T Tau S tight binary system using adaptive optics on the Keck II telescope. We have also obtained the first 3.8 and 4.7 micron images that resolve the three components of the T Tau multiple system, as well as new 1.6 and 2.2 micron images. Together with its very red near-infrared colors, the spectrum of T Tau Sb shows that this T Tauri star is extincted by a roughly constant extinction of Av~15 mag, which is probably the 0.7''x0.5'' circumbinary structure recently observed in absorption …
We report high spatial resolution 11.2 and 18.1 micron imaging of the eruptive variable V838 Monocerotis, obtained with Gemini Observatory's Michelle in 2007 March. The 2007 flux density of the unresolved stellar core is roughly 2 times brighter than that observed in 2004. We interpret these data as evidence that V838 Mon has experienced a new circumstellar dust creation event. We also report a gap of spatially extended thermal emission over radial distances of 1860-93000 AU from the central source, which suggests that no prior significant circumstellar dust production events have occurred wit…
We report long-baseline interferometric measurements of circumstellar dust around massive evolved stars with the MIDI instrument on the Very Large Telescope Interferometer and provide spectrally dispersed visibilities in the 8-13 micron wavelength band. We also present diffraction-limited observations at 10.7 micron on the Keck Telescope with baselines up to 8.7 m which explore larger scale structure. We have resolved the dust shells around the late type WC stars WR 106 and WR 95, and the enigmatic NaSt1 (formerly WR 122), suspected to have recently evolved from a Luminous Blue Variable (LBV) …
L-band data of 30 Doradus at 3.5 micron taken with SPIREX (South Pole Infrared Explorer) is presented. The photometry was combined with 2MASS JHK data at 1.25-2.2 micron. Colour-colour and colour-magnitude diagrams are constructed and used to determine the sources with infrared excess. These are interpreted as circumstellar disks, and enable the fraction of sources with disks (the cluster disk fraction or CDF) to be determined. We find that ~42% of the sources detected at L-band in 30 Doradus have an IR-excess.
Supernovae descendent from massive stars explode in media that have been modified by their progenitors' mass loss and UV radiation. The supernova ejecta will first interact with the circumstellar material shed by the progenitors at late evolutionary stages, and then interact with the interstellar material. Circumstellar nebulae in supernova remnants can be diagnosed by their small expansion velocities and high [N II]/H$α$ ratios. The presence of circumstellar nebulae appears ubiquitous among known young supernova remnants. These nebulae can be compared to those around evolved massive stars to …
We present imaging observations of the evolved star IRC+10216 in the CS J=14--13 line at 685.4 GHz and associated submillimeter continuum at about 2'' resolution made with the partially constructed Submillimeter Array. The CS J=14--13 line emission from the stellar envelope is well resolved both spatially and spectrally. The strong central concentration of the line emission provides direct evidence that CS is a parent molecule that forms close to the stellar photosphere, in accord with previous images of the lower excitation CS J=2--1 line and inferences from unresolved observations of vibrati…
We present new mid-infrared observations of objects in the vicinity of the O-star sigma Orionis, obtained with TIMMI-2 at ESO. By constraining their near- and mid-infrared spectral energy distributions, we established the nature of previously known IRAS sources and identified new mid-infrared sources as young stellar objects with circumstellar disks, likely massive members of the sigma Ori cluster. For two of these objects we have obtained spectroscopy in the 8-13 micron range in order to investigate the chemistry of the dust grains. TX Ori exhibits a typical silicate emission feature at 10 mi…
We conducted a survey for infrared excess emission from 16 nearby main sequence shell stars using the Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS) on the Spitzer Space Telescope. Shell stars are early-type stars with narrow absorption lines in their spectra that appear to arise from circumstellar (CS) gas. Four of the 16 stars in our survey showed excess emission at 24 microns and 70 microns characteristic of cool CS dust and are likely to be edge-on debris disks. Including previously known disks, it appears that the fraction of protoplanetary and debris disks among the main sequence shell …
Context: Molecular hydrogen (H2) is the most abundant molecule in the circumstellar (CS) environments of young stars, and is a key element in giant planet formation. The measurement of the H2 content provides the most direct probe of the total amount of CS gas, especially in the inner warm planet-forming regions of the disks. Aims: Most Herbig Be stars (HBes) are distant from the Sun and their nature and evolution are still debated. We therefore conducted mid-infrared observations of H2 as a tracer of warm gas around HBes known to have gas-rich CS environments. Methods: We report a search for …
We present a comprehensive study of disks around 81 young low-mass stars and brown dwarfs in the nearby ~2-Myr-old Chamaeleon I star-forming region. We use mid-infrared photometry from the Spitzer Space Telescope, supplemented by findings from ground-based high-resolution optical spectroscopy and adaptive optics imaging. We derive disk fractions of 52 (+/-6) % and 58 (+6/-7) % based on 8-micron and 24-micron colour excesses, respectively, consistent with those reported for other clusters of similar age. Within the uncertainties, the disk frequency in our sample of K3-M8 objects in Cha I does n…
We report the first near infrared (NIR) imaging of a circumstellar annular disk around the young (~8 Myr), Vega-like star, HR 4796A. NICMOS coronagraph observations at 1.1 and 1.6 microns reveal a ring-like symmetrical structure peaking in reflected intensity 1.05 arcsec +/- 0.02 arcsec (~ 70 AU) from the central A0V star. The ring geometry, with an inclination of 73.1 deg +/- 1.2 deg and a major axis PA of 26.8 deg +/- 0.6 deg, is in good agreement with recent 12.5 and 20.8 micron observations of a truncated disk (Koerner, et al. 1998). The ring is resolved with a characteristic width of less…
We present new observations of the red supergiant VY CMa at 1.25 micron, 1.65 micron, 2.26 micron, 3.08 micron and 4.8 micron. Two complementary observational techniques were utilized: non-redundant aperture masking on the 10-m Keck-I telescope yielding images of the innermost regions at unprecedented resolution, and adaptive optics imaging on the ESO 3.6-m telescope at La Silla attaining extremely high (~10^5) peak-to-noise dynamic range over a wide field. For the first time the inner dust shell has been resolved in the near-infrared to reveal a one-sided extension of circumstellar emission w…
We present a JHKL survey of the massive star forming region RCW 57 (NGC 3576) based on L-band data at 3.5 micron taken with SPIREX (South Pole Infrared Explorer), and 2MASS JHK data at 1.25-2.2 micron. This is the second of two papers, the first one concerning a similar JHKL survey of 30 Doradus. Colour-colour and colour-magnitude diagrams are used to detect sources with infrared excess. This excess emission is interpreted as coming from circumstellar disks, and hence gives the cluster disk fraction (CDF). Based on the CDF and the age of RCW 57, it is possible to draw conclusions on the format…
The Square Kilometer Array will have the sensitivity, spatial resolution, and frequency resolution to provide new scientific knowledge of evolved stars. Four basic areas of scientific exploration are enhanced by the construction of the SKA: 1) detection and imaging of photospheric radio continuum emission and position correlation with maser distributions, 2) imaging of thermal dust emission around evolved stars and the detailed structures of their circumstellar winds (again, including comparison with maser distributions), 3) study of cm-wavelength molecular line transitions and the circumstell…
We present a model of the circumstellar environment of the so-called ``Butterfly Star'' in Taurus (IRAS 04302+2247). The appearance of this young stellar object is dominated by a large circumstellar disk seen edge-on and the light scattering lobes above the disk. The model is based on multi-wavelength continuum observations: Millimeter maps and high-resolution near-infrared images obtained with HST/NICMOS. It was found that the disk and envelope parameters are comparable with those of the circumstellar environment of other young stellar objects. A main result is that the dust properties must b…
We obtained low resolution (R = 100) mid-infrared (8-13 micron wavelengths) spectra of 8 nearby young main sequence stars with the Keck 1 telescope and Long-Wavelength Spectrometer (LWS) to search for 10 micron silicate (Si-O stretch) emission from circumstellar dust. No stars exhibited readily apparent emission: Spectra were then analyzed by least-squares fitting of a template based on a spectrum of Comet Hale-Bopp. Using this technique, we were able to constrain the level of silicate emission to a threshold ten times below what was previously possible from space. We found one star, HD 17925,…
We have imaged the M2Iab supergiant star Alpha Ori at 11.7 micron and 17.9 micron using the Hale 5-m telescope and an array camera with sub-arcsecond angular resolution. Our images reveal the circumstellar dust shell extending out to approximately 5" from the star. By fitting two multi-parameter models to the data, we find values for the dust shell inner radius, the temperature at this radius, the percentage flux produced by the circumstellar material at each of our wavelengths, and the radial dependence of the dust mass density. We present profiles of the mean surface brightness as a function…
This is the first paper in a series of three where we present the first comprehensive inventory of solid state emission bands observed in a sample of 17 oxygen-rich circumstellar dust shells surrounding evolved stars. The data were taken with the Short and Long Wavelength Spectrographs on board of the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) and cover the 2.4 to 195 micron wavelength range. The spectra show the presence of broad 10 and 18 micron bands that can be attributed to amorphous silicates. In addition, at least 49 narrow bands are found whose position and width indicate they can be attributed …
We summarize the analysis of a uniform set of both previously-known and newly-discovered scattered-light echoes, detected within 30" of SN 1987A in ten years of optical imaging, and with which we have constructed the most complete three-dimensional model of the progenitor's circumstellar environment. Surrounding the SN is a richly-structured bipolar nebula. An outer, double-lobed ``peanut,'' which we believe is the contact discontinuity between the red supergiant and main sequence winds, is a prolate shell extending 28 ly along the poles and 11 ly near the equator. Napoleon's Hat, previously b…
A search for previously undetected optically thin disks around stars in the nearby, young, TW Hydrae Association was conducted around sixteen stars with sensitive 12 and 18 micron photometry. The survey could detect Zodiacal-like dust, with temperature 200-300 K, at levels of L(IR)/L(*)=7e-3. Possible mid-infrared excess emission from TWA 17 was detected at the 2-sigma level, but none of the other stars showed evidence for circumstellar dust. The rapid disappearance of large amounts of dust around the K and M-type stars in this sample may mean that any planet formation in the terrestrial plane…
We present a sensitive, multiwavelength submillimeter continuum survey of 153 young stellar objects in the Taurus-Auriga star formation region. The submillimeter detection rate is 61% to a completeness limit of ~10 mJy (3-sigma) at 850 microns. The inferred circumstellar disk masses are log-normally distributed with a mean mass of ~0.005 solar masses and a large dispersion (0.5 dex). Roughly one third of the submillimeter sources have disk masses larger than the minimal nebula from which the solar system formed. The median disk to star mass ratio is 0.5%. The empirical behavior of the submilli…
