We report HST/NICMOS coronagraphic images of the HD 15115 circumstellar disk at 1.1\micron. We find a similar morphology to that seen in the visible and at H band--an edge-on disk that is asymmetric in surface brightness. Several aspects of the 1.1\micron data are different, highlighting the need for multi-wavelength images of each circumstellar disk. We find a flattening to the western surface brightness profile at 1.1\micron interior to 2\arcsec (90 AU) and a warp in the western half of the disk. We measure the surface brightness profiles of the two disk lobes and create a measure of the dust scattering efficiency between 0.55-1.65\micron at 1\arcsec, 2\arcsec, and 3\arcsec. At 2\arcsec the western lobe has a neutral spectrum up to 1.1\micron and a strong absorption or blue spectrum $>$1.1\micron, while a blue trend is seen in the eastern lobe. At 1\arcsec the disk has a red F110W-H color in both lobes.
We have carried out a high-dispersion (R~30,000) echelle spectroscopic survey of 16 Type II supernovae (SNe) to search for narrow emission lines from circumstellar nebulae ejected by their massive progenitors. Circumstellar nebulae, if detected, provide invaluable opportunities to probe SN progenitors. Of the 16 SNe observed, SN ejecta are clearly detected in 4 SNe and possibly in another 2 SNe, interstellar gas is detected in 12 SNe, and circumstellar material is detected only in SN 1978K and SN 1998S. In the case of SN 1978K we are able to place an upper limit of ~2.2 pc for the size of the …
We present the results of a VLA search for HI emission in the circumstellar envelopes of five nearby AGB stars: RS Cnc, IRC+10216, EP Aqr, R Cas, and R Aqr. We have detected emission coincident in both position and velocity with RS Cnc, implying that the emission arises from its extended envelope. For R Cas, we detected weak emission that peaks at the stellar systemic velocity and overlaps with the location of its circumstellar dust shell and thus is probably related to the star. Toward IRC+10216 and EP Aqr, we detected multiple, arcminute-scale HI emission features at velocities consistent wi…
We report the results of a sensitive near-infrared JHKL imaging survey of the Trapezium cluster in Orion. We use the JHKL colors to obtain a census of infrared excess stars in the cluster. Of (391) stars brighter than 12th magnitude in the K and L bands, 80 +/- 7% are found to exhibit detectable infrared excess on the J-H, K-L color-color diagram. Examination of a subsample of 285 of these stars with published spectral types yields a slightly higher infrared excess fraction of 85%. We find that 97% of the optical proplyds in the cluster exhibit excess in the JHKL color-color diagram indicating…
Few circumstellar disks have been directly observed. Here we use sensitive differential polarimetric techniques to overcome atmospheric speckle noise in order to image the circumstellar material around HD 169142. The detected envelope or disk is considerably smaller than expectations based on the measured strength of the far-IR excess from this system.
The circumstellar envelopes of carbon-rich AGB stars show a chemical complexity that is exemplified by the prototypical object IRC +10216, in which about 60 different molecules have been detected to date. Most of these species are carbon chains of the type CnH, CnH2, CnN, HCnN. We present the detection of new species (CH2CHCN, CH2CN, H2CS, CH3CCH and C3O) achieved thanks to the systematic observation of the full 3 mm window with the IRAM 30m telescope plus some ARO 12m observations. All these species, known to exist in the interstellar medium, are detected for the first time in a circumstellar…
Near-infrared imaging with the Hubble Space Telescope recently revealed a circumstellar dust disk around the A star HD 32297. Dust scattered light is detected as far as 400 AU radius and the linear morphology is consistent with a disk ~10 degrees away from an edge-on orientation. Here we present the first optical images that show the dust scattered light morphology from 560 to 1680 AU radius. The position angle of the putative disk midplane diverges by 31 degrees and the color of dust scattering is most likely blue. We associate HD 32297 with a wall of interstellar gas and the enigmatic region…
We conducted sub-arcsecond near-infrared imaging observations of RNO91 with CIAO mounted on the SUBARU 8.2 m telescope. We present our JHK band data along with optical images, which when considered together reveal a complex circumstellar structure. We examined the colors of associated nebula and compared the geometry of the outflow/disk system suggested by our data with that already proposed on the basis of previous studies. Our K-band image shows bright circumstellar nebulosity detected within 2"(300AU) around the central source while it is less conspicuous at shorter wavelengths such as J an…
Context: the observations of the proplyds in the Orion Nebula Cluster, showing clear evidence of ongoing photoevaporation, have provided a clear proof about the role of the externally induced photoevaporation in the evolution of circumstellar disks. NGC 6611 is an open cluster suitable to study disk photoevaporation, thanks to its large population of massive members and of stars with disk. In a previous work, we obtained evidence of the influence of the strong UV field generated by the massive cluster members on the evolution of disks around low-mass Pre-Main Sequence members. That work was ba…
We report the discovery in NIR with SofI at the NTT of a resolved circumstellar dust disk around a 2MASS source at the periphery of the rho Ophiuchi dark cloud. We present follow-up observations in J, H, and Ks-band obtained with ISAAC at the VLT, under 0.4"-seeing conditions, which unveil a dark dust lane oriented East-West between two characteristic northern and southern reflection nebulae. This new circumstellar dust disk has a radius of 2.15" (300 AU at 140 pc), and a width of 1.2" (170 AU at 140 pc). Thanks to its location at the periphery of the dense cores, it suffers small foreground v…
We present the first ground-based near-infrared image of the circumstellar disk around the post-Herbig Ae/Be star HD141569A initially detected with the HST. Observations were carried out in the near-IR (2.2 $μ$m) at the Palomar 200-inch telescope using the adaptive optics system PALAO. The main large scale asymmetric features of the disk are detected on our ground-based data. In addition, we measured that the surface brightness of the disk is slightly different than that derived by HST observations (at 1.1 $μ$m and 1.6 $μ$m). We interpret this possible color-effect in terms of dust properties …
We present new results of a spectroscopic survey of circumstellar HI in the direction of evolved stars made with the Nancay Radiotelescope. The HI line at 21 cm has been detected in the circumstellar shells of a variety of evolved stars: AGB stars, oxygen-rich and carbon-rich, Semi-Regular and Miras, and Planetary Nebulae. The emissions are generally spatially resolved, i.e. larger than 4', indicating shell sizes of the order of 1 pc which opens the possibility to trace the history of mass loss over the past ~ 10^4-10^5 years. The line-profiles are sometimes composite. The individual component…
We investigate the X-ray and near-infrared emission properties of a sample of pre-main sequence (PMS) stellar systems in the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) that display evidence for circumstellar disks (``proplyds'') and optical jets in Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging. Approximately 70% of ~140 proplyds were detected as X-ray sources in the Chandra Orion Ultradeep Program observation of the ONC, including ~25% of proplyds that do not display central stars in HST imaging. Many proplyds display near-infrared excesses, suggesting disk accretion is ongoing onto the central, PMS stars. Among circu…
We present synthetic spectra for circumstellar disks that are heated by radiation from a central brown dwarf. Under the assumption of vertical hydrostatic equilibrium, our models yield scaleheights for brown dwarf disks in excess of three times those derived for classical T Tauri (CTTS) disks. If the near-IR excess emission observed from brown dwarfs is indeed due to circumstellar disks, then the large scaleheights we find could have a significant impact on the optical and near-IR detectability of such systems. Our radiation transfer calculations show that such highly flared disks around brown…
We report the results of deep infrared observations of brown dwarf candidates in the Trapezium cluster in Orion. Analysis of the JHK color-color diagram indicates that a large fraction (approx 65% +/- 15%) of the observed sources exhibit infrared excess emission. This suggests the extreme youth of these objects and in turn, provides strong independent confirmation of the existence of a large population of substellar objects in the cluster. Moreover, this suggests that the majority of these substellar objects are presently surrounded by circumstellar disks similar to the situation for the stell…
(Abridged) We have used the VLA to search for neutral atomic hydrogen in the circumstellar envelopes of five AGB stars. We have detected HI 21-cm emission coincident in both position and velocity with the semi-regular variable RS Cnc. The emission comprises a compact, slightly elongated feature centered on the star with a mean diameter ~82'' (1.5e17 cm), plus an additional filament extending ~6' to the NW. This filament suggests that a portion of the mass loss is highly asymmetric. We estimate MHI=1.5e-3 Msun and M_dot~1.7e-7 Msun/yr. Toward R Cas, we detect weak emission that peaks at the ste…
Circumstellar shells around AGB stars are built over long periods of time that may reach several million years. They may therefore be extended over large sizes (~1 pc, possibly more), and different complementary tracers are needed to describe their global properties. In the present work, we combined 21-cm HI and CO rotational line data obtained on an oxygen-rich semi-regular variable, RX Lep, to describe the global properties of its circumstellar environment. With the SEST, we detected the CO(2-1) rotational line from RX Lep. The line profile is parabolic and implies an expansion velocity of ~…
Near-infrared and optical imaging of HD32297 indicate that it has an edge-on debris disk, similar to beta Pic. I present high resolution optical spectra of the NaI doublet toward HD32297 and stars in close angular proximity. A circumstellar absorption component is clearly observed toward HD32297 at the stellar radial velocity, which is not observed toward any of its neighbors, including the nearest only 0.9 arcmin away. An interstellar component is detected in all stars >90 pc, including HD32297, likely due to the interstellar material at the boundary of the Local Bubble. Radial velocity measu…
We use 3-D radiative transfer models to show the effects of clumpy circumstellar material on the observed infrared colors of high mass stars embedded in molecular clouds. We highlight differences between 3-D clumpy and 1-D smooth models which can affect the interpretation of data. We discuss several important properties of the emergent spectral energy distribution (SED): More near-infrared light (scattered and direct from the central source) can escape than in smooth 1-D models. The near- and mid-infrared SED of the same object can vary significantly with viewing angle, depending on the clump …
We present Spitzer observations and McDonald Observatory Smith Telescope and Anglo-Australian Telescope high spectral resolution optical observations of 4 nearby stars with variable or anomalous optical absorption, likely caused by circumstellar material. The optical observations of CaII and NaI cover a 2.8 year baseline, and extend the long term monitoring of these systems by previous researchers. In addition, mini-surveys of the local interstellar medium (LISM) around our primary targets provide a reconstruction of the intervening LISM along the line of sight. We confirm that the anomalous a…
We investigate the possibility to detect giant planets that are still embedded in young circumstellar disks. Based on models with different stellar, planetary, and disk masses, and different radial positions of the planet we analyze the resulting submillimeter appearance of these systems. We find that the influence of the planet on the spectral energy distribution could not be distinguished from that of other disk parameters. However, dust reemission images of the disks show that the hot region in the proximity of a young planet, along with the gap, could indeed be detected and mapped with the…
We describe photometry at mid-infrared passbands (1.2 - 24 microns) for a sample of 18 elliptical galaxies. All surface brightness distributions resemble de Vaucouleurs profiles, indicating that most of the emission arises from the photospheres or circumstellar regions of red giant stars. The spectral energy distribution peaks near 1.6 microns, but the half-light or effective radius has a pronounced minimum near the K band (2.15 microns). Apart from the 24 micron passband, all sample-averaged radial color profiles have measurable slopes within about twice the (K band) effective radius. Evident…
BP Psc is a puzzling late-type, emission-line field star with large infrared excess. The star is encircled and enshrouded by a nearly edge-on, dust circumstellar disk, and displays an extensive jet system similar to those associated with pre-main sequence (pre-MS) stars. We conducted a mm-wave molecular line survey of BP Psc with the 30 m telescope of the Institut de Radio Astronomie Millimetrique (IRAM). We detected lines of 12CO and 13CO and, possibly, very weak emission from HCO+ and CN; HCN, H2CO, and SiO are not detected. The CO line profiles of BP Psc are well fit by a model invoking a d…
Observations at 70 microns with the Spitzer Space Telescope have detected several stellar systems within 65 pc of the Sun. Of 18 presumably young systems detected in this study, as many as 15 have 70-micron emission in excess of that expected from their stellar photospheres. Five of the systems with excesses are members of the Tucanae Association. The 70-micron excesses range from a factor of ~2 to nearly 30 times the expected photospheric emission from these stars. In contrast to the 70-micron properties of these systems, there is evidence for an emission excess at 24 microns for only HD 3003…
We determine the distribution of circumstellar disk masses in the young (~0.3 Myr) cluster NGC 2024 by imaging a 2.5'x2.5' region in 3mm continuum emission to an RMS noise level of ~0.75 mJy/beam with the Owens Valley Millimeter Array. The mosaic encompasses 147 K-band sources as well as the molecular ridge seen previously in dust continuum emission. We detect 10 point-like sources in 3mm continuum emission above the level of 5-sigma within the unit gain region of the mosaic. One of these sources corresponds to the near-IR source IRS 2, an early B-type star. Two other sources are tentatively a…
We present the first multi-color view of the scattered light disk of the Herbig Ae star HD 163296, based on coronagraphic observations from the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS). Radial profile fits of the surface brightness along the disk's semi-major axis indicates that the disk is not continuously flared, and extends to 540 AU. The disk's color (V-I)=1.1 at a radial distance of 3.5 arcseconds is redder than the observed stellar color (V-I)=0.15. This red disk color might be indicative of either an evolution in the grain size distribution (i.e. grain growth) and/or com…
A search for previously undetected optically thin disks around stars in the nearby, young, TW Hydrae Association was conducted around sixteen stars with sensitive 12 and 18 micron photometry. The survey could detect Zodiacal-like dust, with temperature 200-300 K, at levels of L(IR)/L(*)=7e-3. Possible mid-infrared excess emission from TWA 17 was detected at the 2-sigma level, but none of the other stars showed evidence for circumstellar dust. The rapid disappearance of large amounts of dust around the K and M-type stars in this sample may mean that any planet formation in the terrestrial plane…
It is still debated whether star formation process depends on environment. In particular it is yet unclear whether star formation in the outer Galaxy, where the environmental conditions are, theoretically, less conducive, occurs in the same way as in the inner Galaxy. We investigate the population of NGC1893, a young cluster ~3-4 Myr in the outer part of the Galaxy (galactic radius >11 Kpc), to explore the effects of environmental conditions on star forming regions. We present infrared observations acquired using the IRAC camera onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope and analyze the color-color d…
We present the results of near-infrared imaging and spectroscopic observations of the young, core-collapse supernova remnant (SNR) G11.2-0.3. In the [Fe II] 1.644 um image, we first discover long, clumpy [Fe II] filaments within the radio shell of the SNR, together with some faint, knotty features in the interior of the remnant. We have detected several [Fe II] lines and HI Br-G line toward the peak position of the bright southeastern [Fe II] filament. The derived extinction is large (Av=13 mag) and it is the brightest [Fe II] filament detected toward SNRs to date. By analyzing two [Fe II] 1.6…
We discuss how we obtain the spatial distribution of ice on the surface of the circumstellar disk around young stars. Ice in the disks plays a very important role in various issues, for instance, on the disk structure, on the planet formation, on the isotopic anomaly in meteorites, and on the origin of the sea on the Earth. Therefore, the spatially resolved observation of the condensation/sublimation front of ice, so-called ``snow line'' is strongly required. Here, we propose a new method for obtaining the spatially resolved ``snow line'' on the circumstellar disks by observing 3 \micron H$_2$…
We present new multiwavelength submillimeter continuum measurements of the circumstellar dust around 48 young stars in the $ρ$ Ophiuchus dark clouds. Supplemented with previous 1.3 mm observations of an additional 99 objects from the literature, the statistical distributions of disk masses and submillimeter colors are calculated and compared to those in the Taurus-Auriga region. These basic submillimeter properties of young stellar objects in both environments are shown to be essentially identical. As with their Taurus counterparts, the $ρ$ Oph circumstellar dust properties are shown to evolve…
We present an edge-on Keplerian disk model to explain the main component of the 12.2 and 6.7 GHz methanol maser emission detected toward NGC7538-IRS1 N. The brightness distribution and spectrum of the line of bright masers are successfully modeled with high amplification of background radio continuum emission along velocity coherent paths through a maser disk. The bend seen in the position-velocity diagram is a characteristic signature of differentially rotating disks. For a central mass of 30 solar masses, suggested by other observations, our model fixes the masing disk to have inner and oute…
We performed a millimetric survey of a sample of 24 post-AGB stars aimed to search for emission from circumstellar matter, in order to investigate the physical properties of the outer parts of the envelopes. The observations were conducted using the 37-channel Max-Planck Millimeter Bolometer array at the 30-meter IRAM telescope. The continuum emission toward the detected sources was used to quantify the mass of the emitting dust. We combined our observations with data available in literature to construct the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the sources. When the observational data cover a…
We have detected the T~Tauri star, DO Tauri, in a 0.6$''$-resolution VLA map of 43.3 GHz ($λ$ = 7 mm) continuum emission. The 43 GHz flux density lies on the same power-law slope defined by 89 to 232 GHz measurements, F$_ν$ $\propto ν^α$ with index $α$ = 2.39$\pm$0.23, confirming that the 43.3 GHz emission is thermal radiation from circumstellar dust. Upper limits to the flux densities at 8.4 and 22.5 GHz constrain the contribution of free-free emission from a compact ionized wind to less than 49\%. The dust emissivity index, $β$, is $0.39\pm$0.23, if the emission is optically thin. Fitting a …
Context: the observation of young stars with circumstellar disks suggests that the disks are dissipated, starting from the inner region, by the radiation of the central star and eventually by the formation of rocky planetesimals, over a time scale of several million years. It was also shown that strong UV radiation emitted by nearby massive stars can heat a circumstellar disk up to some thousand degrees, inducing the photoevaporation of the gas. This process strongly reduces the dissipation time scale. Aims: we study whether there exists a correlation between the spatial distribution of stars …
We present the mid-infrared colors of X-ray-detected AGN and explore mid-infrared selection criteria. Using a statistical matching technique, the likelihood ratio, over 900 IRAC counterparts were identified with a new MUSYC X-ray source catalog that includes ~1000 published X-ray sources in the Chandra Deep Field-South and Extended Chandra Deep Field-South. Most X-ray-selected AGN have IRAC spectral shapes consistent with power-law slopes, f_{nu} ~ nu^{alpha}, and display a wide range of colors, -2 < alpha < 2. Although X-ray sources typically fit to redder (more negative alpha) power-laws tha…
We compare the infrared colors predicted by theoretical models of protostellar envelopes and protoplanetary disks with initial observations of young stellar objects made with the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) on the Spitzer Space Telescope (Werner et al. 2004, Fazio et al. 2004). Disk and envelope models characterized by infall and/or accretion rates found in previous studies can quantitatively account for the range of IRAC colors found in four young embedded clusters: S 140, S 171, NGC 7129, and Cep C. The IRAC color-color diagram ([3.6]-[4.5] vs. [5.8]-[8.0]) can be used to help to distinguis…
We present the results of the first broadband 10.8 um survey of the NGC 2024 cluster. The mid-infrared data were combined with our previously published JHKL photometry in order to construct spectral energy distributions for all detected sources. The main scientific goals were to investigate the nature of the young stellar objects (YSOs) in the cluster, and to examine the efficiency of detecting circumstellar disk sources from near-infrared JHKL color-color diagrams. Out of 59 sources surveyed having K-band magnitudes K < 10.5, we detected 35 (~59%) at 10 um. Combining these detections, and upp…
The 21micron and 30micron bands are the strongest dust emission features detected in evolved low- and intermediate-mass C-rich stars (i.e. asymptotic giant branch [AGB] stars, proto-planetary nebulae [PPN], and planetary nebulae [PN]). While the 21micron feature is rare and exists only in the transient PPN phase, the 30micron feature is more common and seen in the entire late stage of stellar evolution, from AGB to PPN and PN phases, as well as in the low-metallicity galaxies: the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The carriers of these features remain unidentif…
We report the discovery of a circumstellar disk around the young A0 star, HR 4796, in thermal infrared imaging carried out at the W.M. Keck Observatory. By fitting a model of the emission from a flat dusty disk to an image at lambda=20.8 microns, we derive a disk inclination, i = 72 +6/-9 deg from face on, with the long axis of emission at PA 28 +/-6 deg. The intensity of emission does not decrease with radius as expected for circumstellar disks but increases outward from the star, peaking near both ends of the elongated structure. We simulate this appearance by varying the inner radius in our…
We have obtained high spatial resolution imaging observations of the HR 4796A circumstellar debris dust ring using the broad optical response of the Hubble Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph in coronagraphic mode. We use our visual wavelength observations to improve upon the earlier measured geometrical parameters of the ring-like disk. Two significant flux density asymmetries are noted: (1) preferential forward scattering by the disk grains and (2) an azimuthal surface brightness anisotropy about the morphological minor axis of the disk with corresponding differential ansal brightness. We f…
Fluxes and upper limits in the wavelength range from 3.6 to 70 microns from the Spitzer Space Telescope are provided for twenty solar-mass Pleiades members. One of these stars shows a probable mid-IR excess and two others have possible excesses, presumably due to circumstellar debris disks. For the star with the largest, most secure excess flux at MIPS wavelengths, HII1101, we derive Log(L[dust]/L[Sun]) ~ -3.8 and an estimated debris disk mass of 4.2 x 10^-5 M(Earth) for an assumed uniform dust grain size of 10 microns If the stars with detected excesses are interpreted as stars with relativel…
We investigate the microlensing effects on a source star surrounded by a circumstellar disk, as a function of wavelength. The microlensing light curve of the system encodes the geometry and surface brightness profile of the disk. In the mid- and far-infrared, the emission of the system is dominated by the thermal emission from the cold dusty disk. For a system located at the Galactic center, we find typical magnifications to be of order 10-20% or higher, depending on the disk surface brightness profile, and the event lasts over one year. At around 20 microns, where the emission for the star an…
We have observed the bipolar post-AGB candidate OH 231.8+4.2, using the mid-infrared interferometer MIDI and the infrared camera with the adaptive optics system NACO on the Very Large Telescope. An unresolved core (<200 mas in FWHM) is found at the center of the OH 231.8+4.2 in the 3.8 micron image. This compact source is resolved with the interferometer. We used two 8-meter telescopes with four different baselines, which cover projected baseline lengths from 62 to 47 meters, and projected position angles from 112 to 131 degrees that are almost perpendicular to the bipolar outflow. Fringes fro…
Aims. We study the geometry and kinematics of the circumstellar environment of the Be star Kappa CMa in the Br gamma emission line and its nearby continuum. Methods. We use the VLTI/AMBER instrument operating in the K band which provides a spatial resolution of about 6 mas with a spectral resolution of 1500 to study the kinematics within the disk and to infer its rotation law. In order to obtain more kinematical constraints we also use an high spectral resolution Pa beta line profile obtain in December 2005 at the Observatorio do Pico do Dios, Brazil and we compile V/R line profile variations …
We present mid-infrared nulling interferometric and direct imaging observations of the Herbig Ae star HD 100546 obtained with the Magellan I (Baade) 6.5 m telescope. The observations show resolved circumstellar emission at 10.3, 11.7, 12.5, 18.0, and 24.5 microns. Through the nulling observations (10.3, 11.7 and 12.5 microns), we detect a circumstellar disk, with an inclination of 45 +- 15 degrees with respect to a face-on disk, a semimajor axis position angle of 150 +- 10 degrees (E of N), and a spatial extent of about 25 AU. The direct images (18.0 and 24.5 microns) show evidence for cooler …
Observations of the rho Ophiuchi star forming region with VLT ANTU and ISAAC under 0.35" seeing conditions reveal two bipolar reflection nebulosities intersected by central dust lanes. The sources (OphE-MM3 and CRBR 2422.8-3423) can be identified as spatially resolved circumstellar disks viewed close to edge-on, similar to edge-on disk sources discovered previously in the Taurus and Orion star forming regions. Millimeter continuum fluxes yield disk masses of the order of 0.01 Mo, i.e. about the mass deemed necessary for the minimum solar nebula. Follow-up spectroscopic observations with SUBARU…
We have carried out a millimeter interferometric continuum survey toward 7 YSOs in the MBM 12 cloud. Thermal emissions associated with 2 YSOs were detected above the 3-$σ$ level at 2.1 mm, and one also showed a 1.3 mm thermal emission. Another object was marginally detected at 2.1 mm. Spectral energy distributions of the YSOs are well fitted by a simple power-law disk model. Masses of the circumstellar disks are estimated to be an order of $0.05 M_{\sun}$. The circumstellar disks in the MBM 12 cloud have properties in common with the disks in nearby star-forming regions, in terms of disk param…
We present mid-IR N-band $(λ_{eff} = 10.2\micron)$ photometry of a carefully selected sample of T Tauri stars thought to be single from the Taurus-Auriga molecular cloud. Infrared excesses in these stars are generally attributed to circumstellar dust-disks. Combining observations at 2.16$\micron$ (K$_{s}$-band) and 10.2$\micron$ (N-band) we probe a region in the circumstellar dust-disk from a few stellar radii through the terrestrial planet zone (0.02-1.0AU). By analyzing the distribution of the $(K_{s}-N)$ color index with respect to previously measured photometric rotation periods we investi…
We present an analysis of optical HST/STIS and HST/FOS spectroscopy of 6 blue stragglers found in the globular clusters M3, NGC6752 and NGC6397. These stars are a subsample of a set of ~50 blue stragglers and stars above the main sequence turn-off in four globular clusters which will be presented in an forthcoming paper. All but the 6 stars presented here can be well fitted with non-LTE model atmospheres. The 6 misfits, on the other hand, possess Balmer jumps which are too large for the effective temperatures implied by their Paschen continua. We find that our data for these stars are consiste…
There is an approximately 60% detection rate for 1612 MHz masers in association with red, color-selected IRAS sources, though few are detected from the bluer circumstellar shells of Mira variables. On the other hand and complementarily, past, pre-IRAS 22 GHz surveys detected many water masers in association with Mira variables. This paper reports on a 22 GHz survey of blue, color-selected Miras at Haystack, wherein 18 new detections are found from 238 searched objects.
We present preliminary results of spectroscopic data obtained with the La Silla 3.6m TIMMI2 and the VLT-ISAAC instruments. We have obtained 23 TIMMI2 N-band and 18 Q-band spectra for our total sample of 36 stars in March 2003 to investigate the evolution of the grain properties in circumstellar disks. Our sample consists of Herbig stars, T Tauri stars and Vega-like stars, some of which have recently been identified to be members of nearby (<100 pc) stellar associations. Silicate and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features are detected and the spatial resolution of TIMMI2 allowe…
High-quality K-band spectra of point sources, deeply embedded in massive star-forming regions, have revealed a population of 20 young massive stars showing no photospheric absorption lines, but only emission lines. The K-band spectra exhibit one or more features commonly associated with massive Young Stellar Objects surrounded by circumstellar material: a very red color (J-K) = 2, CO bandhead emission, hydrogen emission lines (sometimes doubly peaked), and FeII and/or MgII emission lines. The CO emission comes from a relatively dense (~10^10 cm^(-3)) and hot (T ~ 2000-5000 K) region, sufficien…
