Let C be an ACM (projectively normal) nondegenerate smooth curve in projective 3-space, and suppose C is general in its Hilbert scheme - this is irreducible once the postulation is fixed. Answering a question posed by Peskine, we show the gonality of C is d-l, where d is the degree of the curve, and l is the maximum order of a multisecant line of C. Furthermore l=4 except for two series of cases, in which the postulation of C forces every surface of minimum degree containing C to contain a line as well. We compute the value of l in terms of the postulation of C in these exceptional cases. We also show the Clifford index of C is equal to the gonality minus 2.
We study the complexity of birational self-maps of a projective threefold $X$ by looking at the birational type of surfaces contracted. These surfaces are birational to the product of the projective line with a smooth projective curve. We prove that the genus of the curves occuring is unbounded if and only if $X$ is birational to a conic bundle or a fibration into cubic surfaces. Similarly, we prove that the gonality of the curves is unbounded if and only if $X$ is birational to a conic bundle.
The purpose of this paper is to show that for a complete intersection curve $C$ in projective space (other than a few stated exceptions), any morphism $f: C \to \mathbb{P}^r$ satisfying $\text{deg}\, f^*\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^r}(1) <\text{deg}\, C$ is obtained by projection from a linear space. In particular, we obtain bounds on the gonality of such curves and compute the gonality of general complete intersection curves. We also prove a special case of one of the well-known Cayley-Bacharach conjectures posed by Eisenbud, Green, and Harris.
Let $C$ be an integral and projective curve; and let $C'$ be its canonical model. We study the relation between the gonality of $C$ and the dimension of a rational normal scroll $S$ where $C'$ can lie on. We are mainly interested in the case where $C$ is singular, or even non-Gorenstein, in which case $C'\not\cong C$. We first analyze some properties of an inclusion $C'\subset S$ when it is induced by a pencil on $C$. Afterwards, in an opposite direction, we assume $C'$ lies on a certain scroll, and check some properties $C$ may satisfy, such as gonality and the kind of its singularities. At t…
I show that on any smooth, projective ordinary curve of genus at least two and a projective embedding, there is a natural example of a stable Ulrich bundle for this embedding: namely the sheaf $B^1_X$ of locally exact differentials twisted by $Ø_X(1)$ given by this embedding and in particular there exist ordinary varieties of any dimension which carry Ulrich bundles. In higher dimensions, assuming $X$ is Frobenius split variety I show that $B^1_X$ is an ACM bundle and if $X$ is also a Calabi-Yau variety and $p>2$ then $B^1_X$ is not a direct sum of line bundles. In particular I show that $B^1_…
本文研究了具有$ \mathcal P, \mathcal N $无挠层和$ D $闭投影格式的短正合列$ 0 \to \mathcal P \to \mathcal N \to \ii_D(k) \to 0 $.
In this paper we contribute to the construction of families of arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (aCM) indecomposable vector bundles on a wide range of polarized surfaces $(X,\Oo_X(1))$ for $\Oo_X(1)$ an ample line bundle. In many cases, we show that for every positive integer $r$ there exists a family of indecomposable aCM vector bundles of rank $r$, depending roughly on $r$ parameters, and in particular they are of \emph{wild representation type}. We also introduce a general setting to study the complexity of a polarized variety $(X,\Oo_X(1))$ with respect to its category of aCM vector bundles. …
In the present note we study configurations of codimension 2 flats in projective spaces and classify those with the smallest rate of growth of the initial sequence. Our work extends those of Bocci, Chiantini in P^2 and Janssen in P^3 to projective spaces of arbitrary dimension.
In this paper we investigate an arithmetic analogue of the gonality of a smooth projective curve $C$ over a number field $k$: the minimal $e$ such there are infinitely many points $P \in C(\bar{k})$ with $[k(P):k] \leq e$. Developing techniques that make use of an auxiliary smooth surface containing the curve, we show that this invariant can take any value subject to constraints imposed by the gonality. Building on work of Debarre--Klassen, we show that this invariant is equal to the gonality for all sufficiently ample curves on a surface $S$ with trivial irregularity.
We generalise Fløystad's theorem on the existence of monads on the projective space to a larger set of projective varieties. We consider a variety $X$, a line bundle $L$ on $X$, and a base-point-free linear system of sections of $L$ giving a morphism to the projective space whose image is either arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (ACM), or linearly normal and not contained in a quadric. We give necessary and sufficient conditions on integers $a$, $b$, and $c$ for a monad of type \[ 0\to(L^\vee)^a\to\mathcal{O}_{X}^{\,b}\to L^c\to0 \] to exist. We show that under certain conditions there exists a mo…
We provide two examples of smooth projective surfaces of tame CM type, by showing that any parameter space of isomorphism classes of indecomposable ACM bundles with fixed rank and determinant on a rational quartic scroll in projective 5-space is either a single point or a projective line. For surfaces of minimal degree and wild CM type, we classify rigid Ulrich bundles as Fibonacci extensions. For the rational normal scrolls S(2,3) and S(3,3), a complete classification of rigid ACM bundles is given in terms of the action of the braid group in three strands.
We study various measures of irrationality for hypersurfaces of large degree in projective space and other varieties. These include the least degree of a rational covering of projective space, and the minimal gonality of a covering family of curves. The theme is that positivity properties of canonical bundles lead to lower bounds on these invariants. In particular, we prove that if X is a very general smooth hypersurface of dimension n and degree d \ge 2n+1, then any dominant rational mapping from X to projective n-space must have degree at least d-1. We also propose a number of open problems,…

This paper is a survey of recent work on the asymptotic behavior of the syzygies of a smooth complex projective variety as the positivity of the embedding line bundle grows. After a quick overview of results from the 1980s and 1990s concerning the linearity of the first few terms of a resolution, we discuss a non-vanishing theorem to the effect that from an asymptotic viewpoint, essentially all of the syzygy modules that could be non-zero are in fact non-zero. We explain the quick new proof of this result in the case of Veronese varieties due to Erman and authors, and we explore some results a…
An Ulrich sheaf on an n-dimensional projective variety X, embedded in a projective space, is a normalized ACM sheaf which has the maximum possible number of global sections. Using a construction based on the representation theory of Roby-Clifford algebras, we prove that every normal ACM variety admits a reflexive sheaf whose restriction to a general 1-dimensional linear section is Ulrich; we call such sheaves delta-Ulrich. In the case n=2, where delta-Ulrich sheaves satisfy the property that their direct image under a general finite linear projection is a semistable instanton bundle, we show t…
